We are creating a natural playground within a community park, the first of its kind in Calgary. With over 140 native plantings, this professionally designed park is an innovative play space. It incorporates natural materials and multisensory experiences to ignite curiosity in children and adults alike. Classic swings, slides built into hills, vertical log obstacle courses, a labyrinth, butterfly garden, horizontal climbing tree, bridges, paths and berms will create lots of opportunity for physical skill development, exploration and fun. We believe the way to build a stronger, more caring community is to build quality spaces that facilitate play and opportunities to meet each other. Due to funding limitations from the City of Calgary the onus is put on communities to raise the money required. We are applying for grants, seeking corporate donations and planning community fundraisers. Our budget is $300,000 and we plan to build in the summer of 2015. We are excited for the opportunity to turn an underused playground into a vibrant new space that encourages community spirit. We are providing an opportunity for your corporation to connect with our community. We need the help of local businesses in order to reach our fundraising goal. Calgary’s prosperity is built on the successful partnership of business and community. This letter is a formal request to ask for a donation to help fund the Haysboro Community Park project. In exchange for your donation, Haysboro community would like to recognize your company’s generosity on our park’s commemorative plaque: a permanent feature located at our park’s entrance that celebrates our corporate sponsors. Through our partnership with Parks Foundation, Calgary we are able to provide tax receipts. Haysboro Community Park: Building Community through Play March, 2015
Corporate Sponsorship Request
With the goal of making Haysboro a better place to play we are revitalizing the outdated public playground located next to our Community Center. We are creating a natural playground within a community park, the first of its kind in Calgary. With over 140 native plantings, this professionally designed park is an innovative play space. It incorporates natural materials and multisensory experiences to ignite curiosity in children and adults alike. Due to funding limitations from the City of Calgary the onus is put on communities to raise the money required. We are applying for grants, seeking corporate donations and planning community fundraisers. Our budget is $300,000 and we plan to build in the summer of 2015. The Haysboro Community Association Playground Committee was formed with the mission of making Haysboro a better
place to play. We are looking at maximizing the play value of our outdoor spaces and finding out and supporting the
recreational activities our residents are interested in. Supporting sports and recreation in a community environment for
and accessible by all our residents is necessary to build a stronger, healthier neighbourhood. We feel that busy, involved
and active youth contribute to a strong, safe and welcoming community.
The space, as it is now, has equipment that doesn’t meet current safety standards and is not functioning as a high play value playground or a relaxing, comfortable park. It has a lot of unused space that has to be maintained but isn’t functional. The community preschool, close residents and neighbouring elementary school are the primary users of the playground now. A playground that is safe and inspiring for children under five years old particularly is needed. We also recognize the need for a community hub where neighbours of all ages feel comfortable and included.
Our focus is to create a beautifully landscaped park that incorporates a natural playground with elements aimed at younger children but that also engages and includes something for all ages. We see it including: classic play pieces like swings and slides; balance and climbing structures made out of wood and natural materials; pathways through native plantings; a variety of surfaces and slight elevation changes and berms; butterfly, herb, vegetable, berry and flower gardens; a labyrinth and amphitheatre; art, beauty and a few items of whimsy. Natural playgrounds stimulate imaginative and cooperative play. People are drawn to and need to find connections with nature. They heal and find rest in places that are naturally beautiful. We recognize the need for comfortable places to sit: picnic tables, benches and soft areas for picnic blankets with thought to shade and proximity to play.
Sustainability is important to us; our recreation needs should not come at the expense of our environment. Constructed using natural materials, the ‘play’ is integrated into the surrounding environment. We see bringing nature back into the realm of play spaces as a way to get the next generation to care, learn about and become invested in the natural world. We are not limiting the play that can happen in a playground like this, we are creating opportunities for people of all ages to find their own way to play while at the same time providing basic elements that can be used to strengthen motor skills, to encourage movement and agility, i.e. balance beams, vertical logs, obstacle courses, climbing poles, berms and paths. Kids fall in love with the places where they most enjoy playing; let them fall in love with Mother Nature and they'll grow up wanting to protect her. To provide a park like this at the community level, within walking distance of your house and accessible by all, should be the norm.
With each generation that passes there are fewer family farms and fewer backyard gardens. Community gardening is a developing trend and a way to learn from each other about horticulture. Our park’s gardens, food forest and native plantings will provide an opportunity for community programming and knowledge sharing through workshops, community volunteer build/maintenance days, local speakers, seed/plant exchanges, etc.
The community of Haysboro was once the Hays Family Dairy Farm. We are paying homage to the Hays family and the history of our community's land by using the farm as our playground’s theme. We have hired a local landscape architect firm to design the park and have sent the design out to tender. We recognize the value of social infrastructure that plays a significant role in the identity and soul of a community.
