You’ve made the deci-sion to finally re-model the outdated

kitchen and living room ofyour home. But if you livein a house built before 1978,a new federal law regulat-ing the removal of leadpaint will affect your homeremodeling project.

In 1978, the use of leadpaint was officiallybanned from residentialconstruction. Before that, however, lead paint wasused in more than 38 mil-lion homes, according tothe U.S. EnvironmentalProtection Agency (EPA).

Today, contractorshired to do renovation, re-pair and painting projects

that will involve at least 6square feet of lead-basedpaint in homes built be-fore 1978 must be EPALead-Safe certified andmust follow specific workpractices to prevent leadcontamination.

Of course, 6 square feetis smaller than the averagewindow — which meansthat pretty much every re-

modeling job will have tocomply with this new re-quirement.

Wood flooring comes in severaldifferent forms. There is solid and there is engineered (top wear layer with plywood base) and then there islaminate, which is really just an imageof wood, hot pressed onto a fiberboard. Wood can do well anywhere ina home with the exception of bathing

bathrooms. However, not every wood will do equally wellin every home. Then there is color width and hardness toconsider. We can help you with all this information andmuch more. Please visit our showroom or attend our nextseminar to learn more! Aloha!

With so many solar con-tractors and sales rep-resentatives out there,

there’s a lot of information andmisinformation solar shoppersare receiving.

First and foremost, your deci-sion should be based on the com-pany you choose to provide yourphotovoltaic (PV) needs. Themost important thing to deter-mine is: Will the company Ichoose fulfill its promises to meand my family, and honor its war-ranty if anything goes wrong?

Researching a company’s his-tory, rating with the BBB, andlength of time in business will tella shopper how reputable thecompany is. A warranty is only asgood for as long as the companyhas been in business.

Another factor to consider: Isthis company providing jobs forlocal residents and are they buy-ing their supplies locally? Main-land companies are here to makea profit and please investorswhile PV systems can be sold.HECO and its subsidiaries limitthe amount of PV power goingback into the grid in each area ofthe islands. Once an area hasreached these limits, HECO willnot allow further installations. What will happen to your war-ranty and service when Mainlandcompanies cannot satisfy theirinvestors because the PV markethas become fully saturated?

The current hot-selling topic inthe PV world is panel selection.

Where do you want to buy yourpanels from — America, Korea,Japan, China? While the panelsfrom all these countries are good, choosing a reputable manufac-turer is always the way to go. Re-search howlong the com-panies havebeen makingpanels andread theirwarranties. All PV panelsb a s i c a l l ycome with a25-year man-ufacturer ’swarranty, butthere are dif-ferences inwhat themanufacturerwarrants andhow efficientthe panelswill be after25 years.

A manufacturer in China, forexample, could have a problemwith all their panels 10 yearsdown the road. What will stopthem from closing up shop andreopening under a differentname, leaving thousandsstranded with faulty panels?

While innovation and technol-ogy are important to every indus-try, it’s important to choose yourpanels from a reputable companythat will back their warranty. Lo-cally owned and operated, Pon-

cho’s Solar Services offers prod-ucts from established companieslike Solar World, Kyocera, Sam-sung, Sanyo and Sharp while stillkeeping an eye on emerging tech-nologies and companies.

Many homeowners haveheard about mono- vs.poly-crystalline panels. The mono-crystalline cellefficiency is higher, but itsshape is circular. Thepoly’s square shaped cellsallow for more panel cov-erage. These minor differ-ences make either paneltype equally efficient. Thelisted wattage is what the

panel produced under StandardTest Condition (STC) rating, which is what HECO uses to de-termine the size of your system. There are other rating systemsout there to compare panels.Make sure these are rated froman independent source. The Tierrating system is completely theopinion of the manufacturer thatuses it.

The two most important num-bers in comparing solar PV sys-tems are, 1) AC kWh output/yearand 2) the cost. Whichever com-plete system can give you themost yearly output at the bestprice is the system to choose.

Another option to consider isto go completely off the powergrid. With the advances in in-verter technology and a batterystorage system, it’s possible to

eliminate your power bill com-pletely and be energy independ-ent. This option, however, can be30 to 50 percent higher than agrid-tie system depending onyour family’s needs.

As a bridge between a grid-tiedsystem and going completely off-grid, homeowners purchasing anew grid-tie system of 4 KW orhigher, Poncho’s Solar Servicewill provide a Hurricane Kit con-sisting of two PV panels, batterybackup, a refrigerator or freezerand two LED lights. The kits areparticularly useful for homeown-ers in areas with frequent black-outs or have medications thatrequire refrigeration.Homeown-ers purchasing new grid-tie sys-tems of 2 to 3 KW’s can purchasea Hurricane Kit for half-price.

Poncho’s Solar Services canprovide knowledgeable, free estimates for all yourresidential and commercialsolar needs state-wide. Call422-4266 on Oahu or seeour website, ponchossolarservices.com for moreinformation. Neighbor Is-land homeowners can callour electrical partners,Walter’s Electric Inc., at 1-855-41SOLAR.

Buyers can also shop forpanels at Poncho’s show-room, located at 650 KakoiSt. in Honolulu.

The word is out andpeople are flockingto purchase photo-

voltaic (PV) systems to re-duce or eliminate theirelectrical bills.

There are a virtually un-limited amount of prod-ucts available today forresidential applications, and many companies aretouting the amount ofelectricity that their pan-els produce. This is onlypart of the equation; oncethe panels produce elec-trical power, that powerneeds to be convertedfrom direct current (DC)to alternating current(AC) and delivered into

your electrical panel. Choosing the right com-

bination of products toproduce the most energycan be challenging, butthere is one combinationthat is clearly the best oneavailable now. We call itthe “perfect match.” Sanyopanels and Enphase microinverters are designed foreach other, and togetherthey truly perform betterthan any other productthat is currently available.

We have known for awhile now that this combi-nation delivered the mostpower to a typical house-hold, and we have beenable to compare systemsthrough remote monitor-ing, but we have never hadour system mounted onthe same roof, with thesame exact conditionsuntil recently. A customercalled to request that weadd more PV panels to her

roof. She had purchased asystem from another ven-dor approximately a yearbefore. The company pro-vided her with 10 solarpanels and micro invert-ers.

She was told that thiswas the highest DC wattpanel she could purchasewith a micro inverter. As aresult, she has averaged alittle less than 1 kWh perpanel per day. This combi-nation produces on aver-age 250 kWh a month, or areduction of $62.50 fromher electric bill. This lefther with an averagemonthly electric bill of$110.00.

We suggested that sheadd eight of our Sanyopanels with the “PerfectMatch” Enphase micro in-verters. This second sys-tem (with two less panels)has been producing an av-erage of 1.3 kilowatts a day,

312 kWh per month, or $78per month in savings. Our“Perfect Match” of prod-ucts is delivering over 32percent more power perpanel than the other prod-ucts. This translates to$186 a year more, perpanel! A typical residentialsystem consists of any-where between 10 and 30panels, which means our“Perfect Match” will po-tentially produce $1,860 to$5,580 more in annual sav-ings over any of the othersystems currently avail-able. These other systemsmay produce more wattsper panel on your roof, butthey deliver substantiallyless kilowatt hours to yourelectrical system, where itreally matters.

lems. In adults, lead poi-soning can lead to hyper-tension and high bloodpressure. Pregnantwomen run the risk ofpassing the poison on totheir unborn child.

It is important that youfind a remodeler who istrained in lead-safe workpractices rather than tryto do the work yourself. Not only that, but it’s thelaw: Contractors workingin pre-1978 homes mustbe lead-paint certifiedand must follow theselead-safe practiceswhether or not there arechildren in the home —unless the homeownercan certify that the houseis lead-paint free.

Whatt aree Lead-SafeWorkk Practices??

The EPA has a freebrochure on its website(www.leadfreekids.org)called “Renovate Right”that provides guidance tohomeowners and contrac-tors about remodelingsafely to minimize leaddust exposure. EPA Lead-Safe Certified Renovatorshave been equipped to uselead test kits, educate con-sumers about the dangersof lead, and use prescribedlead-safe work practices.Your certified contractorshould also give you thisbrochure to familiarize youwith specific work prac-tices, including these pro-cedures:

1. Containing the workarea so that dust and debrisdo not escape. Warningsigns will be posted to keepvisitors away from the area, and heavy-duty plastic andtape are used to seal offdoors and heating and cool-ing system vents and tocover the floors and anyfurniture that cannot bemoved.

2. Minimizingdust.Thereis no way to eliminate it,but some paint removalmethods create less dustthan others. For example, using water to mist areasbefore sanding or scrapingand prying and pullingapart components can re-duce dust. It’s also prohib-ited to use open flame

burning or torching; sand-ing, grinding, planing, nee-dle gunning, or blastingwith power tools andequipment not equippedwith a shroud and high-ef-ficiency particulate air(HEPA) filter vacuum at-tachment; or using a heatgun at temperaturesgreater than 1,100 F.

3. Cleaning up thor-oughly. When all the workis done, and before takingdown any plastic that iso-lates the work area from therest of the home, the areawill be cleaned with aHEPA vacuum to removedust and debris on all sur-faces, followed by wet mop-ping with plenty of water.

Going Solar TodayPays Right AwayPurchasing a solar energy system is something most

homeowners consider at year-end, when the generous tax

incentives of up to 65 percent of a system’s cost become

extremely attractive. However, here are just three of the many

benefits to installing solar now:

1) Take home more of your paycheck. Homeowners can

change their tax withholding status the instant they install

a system and take home more money every payday. There’s

no need to wait for tax time to realize the value of solar

tax incentives.

2) Lock in today’s electricity costs. A solar energy system

can virtually eliminate your monthly electric bill and insulate

you from unpredictable energy costs. For those who purchase

a solar power service system, which replaces your existing

electric utility with rooftop solar, you lock in a monthly

rate lower than you are paying now. With recent reports

forecasting oil prices at $100 per barrel this summer, Hawaii

homeowners most likely will see an increased electric bill.

3) Sell power to HECO for income. Beginning this year,

homeowners can sell excess solar power back to the utility.

So not only can you virtually eliminate your monthly bill, you

can actually make money with a new system and accelerate

the return on your investment.

There are many more reasons to install your solar system

today, and RevoluSun can help you understand them all.

As Hawaii’s leading solar provider, RevoluSun designed

and installed more commercial and residential photovoltaic

projects in 2010 than any other company, and we’d like to

help you, too. To schedule your free energy evaluationvisit www.RevoluSun.com or call 808.748.8888.

Deliciouss kitchenn colorsSo many delicious colors

are available to help youcreate an inviting mood inyour kitchen. Many oftoday’s hottest hues are in-spired by favorite foods

and pleasant kitchen expe-riences such as cooking, baking and entertaining.Examples include today’spopular paprika and cinna-mon colors; soothing neu-trals such as tarragon andsage; and the deep, richtones of wine or cherry. These colors, when used inwall coverings, flooring oraccessories, can provide abackdrop that sets the tonein your kitchen.

Warmm woodd cabinetryThere’s nothing like the

look of real wood to add acomforting feel to anyroom. And, since cabinetryis often one of the biggestvisual elements in akitchen, consider cabinetry

in a warm color to make ahigh-impact statement. Many trendy wood typesare available in surpris-ingly affordable stylesfrom manufacturers ofsemi-custom cabinetry.

“Today's semi-customcabinetry gives homeown-ers access to some of themost desired wood typesincluding cherry, knownfor its deep reddish tones, and alder, which can lend arustic or casual feel to akitchen,” says Cathy Hitz, brand manager for Dia-mond Cabinets.

Recently, Diamondmade some of its mostpopular door styles avail-able in new wood types. For example, the Shilohdoor style features a sim-plistic look and is availablein cherry, alder and rusticalder.

Reflectivee accentsOffset the warm tones of

the wood with the gleam ofreflective accents. Oneway to add both style andlight to the space is tochoose decorative glass in-serts for the cabinet doors. You can create just aboutany look you want with

Complement the warmdesign theme by treatingthe eye to textured sur-faces. Use woven basketsfor storage or decorativepurposes, add comfy tex-tured pillows to the barstools and bring in othertextured elements in theform of rattan, fabric orpottery. Don’t be afraid to

sprinkle in elements ofcolor surprise here andthere to keep the space in-teresting, whether it’s thesplash of a lipstick-redvase or a family photoframed in a vivid shade ofelectric blue.

Let your kitchen be apersonal palette that re-flects your true personal-ity. Warm it up with color, and no one will ever wantto leave the room.

Renters face a peren-nial decoratingdilemma: Do you

personalize your apart-ment decor, knowing thatwhen you move out thelandlord will likely requireyou to put everything backthe way it was? Or do youlive with bare white walls,neutral-toned carpets andhomogeneous decor?

You may not be able tomake major changes —like replacing that blandsand-colored carpet withone in your favorite hue ofpurple — but you can per-sonalize your rental spacewith some easy-to-reverseupgrades. While the effortto install, and later re-move, these upgrades issmall, their impact on yourhome’s decor can be verybig, indeed.

Here are a few simpleroom “redos” that can addpizzazz to your apartment— without creating extrawork when it’s time tomove out.

WallsPaint is an easy way to

switch up the color of aroom, but if you paint thewalls, be prepared to re-paint them back to whitebefore your lease ends.Peel and stick wall decorcan be a better option forpersonalizing a space, while leaving the whitewalls intact — especially ifyou opt for high-qualitypeel and stick wall muralslike those offered by Mu-ralsYourWay.com.

SmartStick peel andstick wall murals arebacked with a patented ad-

hesive that allows you toeasily place the materialon nearly any surface(walls, windows, evendoors), pull it down, repo-sition it, even move it to adifferent wall — all with-out damaging the mural orthe wall beneath it. Unlikewall decals or wall stick-ers, the mural does not ripor wrinkle and can bereused hundreds of times.MuralsYourWay.com car-ries thousands of muralsthat can all be printed onSmartStick fabric and cus-tomized for size. Log on towww.muralsyourway.comto learn more.

FloorsReplacing apartment

carpet is usually a big no-no. Even if the existingcarpet is worn and stained,

unless you strike an agree-ment with your landlordfor replacing it at yourown expense, it’s better tosimply cover up the car-peting you can’t stand.

Fortunately, it’s easy tofind decorative throw rugsthat will add color andpersonalization to yourspace — and help protectneutral-toned carpetsfrom wear, tear and stain-

ing, all of which you maybe required to pay forwhen you move out. Youcan opt to arrange severalsmaller carpets in keyareas of the room, such asplacing a long runner inhigh-traffic hallways, or alarge area rug to anchorfurniture groupings in liv-ing areas. Or, you can evenfind a very large rug thatcovers almost the entire

floor. When it’s time tomove out, simply roll upyour rugs and go, leavingthe carpet beneath lookingexactly the way it waswhen you moved in.

WindowsOften, apartments will

have no window treat-ments beyond blindswhen you move in. Youcould install your own

An easy way toget privacy, without hav-ing to install hardware, isto purchase removablewindow film. The frostedfilm affords privacy, butis easily removed, leav-

the amount of hardwareneeded by placing deco-rative holdbacks (usuallyused to hold a curtainaway from a window atabout the midpoint) atthe top corners of a win-dow and draping yards offabric in your favoritecolor or pattern over theholdbacks. The hold-

past 115 years and continues tobe a family-owned business thatchampions the motto, onipaa(pulling together).

Walker-Moody is synony-mous with many recognizableiconic structures of Hawaii’slandscape, including HonoluluHale, The Queen’s MedicalCenter, The Royal Mausoleum,as well as the Arizona Memor-ial. Today, however, you can’tbe a jack-of-all-trades. With thebuilding products changing allthe time, and the rapid changein technology, a contractor’swork force has to be highlyskilled and competent in its cho-sen field.

Asphalt maintenance has be-come a focus for Walker-Moody.The company is a specialist inasphalt maintenance: cleaning, repair, crack-fill, sealcoat, andslurry and chip-seal. Being adaily driver, John Moody saw the

need for a higher standard in thepavement maintenance industry inHawaii. Through research on dif-ferent products in the market,Moody discovered the superiorproducts of SealMaster.

The company has been in-stalling pavement maintenanceproducts since it purchased equip-ment in 2000.

“The infrastructure is an impor-tant part of these islands, whetherit is the highways or a condo-minium parking lot,” Moody says.“Paving has been an importantpart of Hawaii’s history, but inthese slow economic times youcan’t afford to just rip out and re-place. Maintenance is key, but thetechnology has taken awhile tocross the ocean. Whatever theproblem, there is a fix, most ofwhich can be done in budget.

“We are another tool on thetool-belt for the state, counties andassociations.”

Walker-Moody is an authorizedinstaller of SealMaster Hawaiiproducts and has the latest tech-nology and training.
