LiDAR – Light Detection And Ranging

Optical remote sensing technology that measures the

distance from the sensor to a target

LAS: Binary file format for LiDAR data storage

developed by the ASPRS in conjunction with private and

government stakeholders

Challenges of Working with LiDAR Data

• Huge data volumes

• Storing & serving

• Integration with other spatial data

• How to manage?

• How to access?

• How to analyze?

Forestry Tasmania

Lidar provided quality improvements and cost

savings

ArcGIS Image Extension provided the tool to

access large amounts of lidar data seamlessly

and quickly.

Lidar was integrated into harvest planning,

inventory assessment and planning analysis

Lidar is an excellent means for characterizing

the forest resource as a basis for forest

management

Cost saving found areas such as:

haul road location

timber inventory

Result of decrease in measurement and planning

effort

Estimated recoup acquisition and processing

costs in 5 years
