EMPLOYMENT GUIDE 1-2015

If you’ll be searching for a job in 2015, don’t just applythe same old tired job search advice about expandingyour network, improving your social media presenceand cleaning up your resume. Those things matter, ofcourse, but they’re hardly revolutionary. Instead, hereare six New Year’s resolutions to truly kick off yoursearch from a position of strength:

1. Go for quality over quantity in your jobapplications. You might be tempted to apply to as many jobs aspossible, figuring that doing so will increase your oddsof being called for an interview. But in practice, thisusually means that you’ll end up “résumé-blasting” --sending out tons of applications without customizingyour résumé and cover letter to the particularopenings you’re applying for. Employers can tell whenyou’re submitting the same generic application you’vesubmitted to dozens of other places, and you have afar lower chance of catching their eyes.

Send out fewer appl ications, and spend timecustomizing each. Write cover letters that are specificto each job you’re applying for, and ensure that yourrésumé highlights speak directly to the qualificationsbeing sought. If your application package is identicalevery time you send it out, that’s a sign that you needto be more targeted in your approach.

2. Reach out to past managers andco-workers who loved your work.Strangely, when people think about their networks, they often think about family and friends but not thepeople in the best position to vouch for their work:past colleagues. If you haven’t recently reached out topast managers and co-workers who thought highly ofyou, now is the time. Get back in touch, let them knowyou’re searching and ask for leads, advice, connectionsor whatever else might be useful. After all, they’re thepeople best positioned to champion your work.

3. Write better cover letters. If you’re like most job seekers, your cover letter is, well, bland and pretty boring. It likely doesn’t do much morethan summarize the experience that’s already listed onyour résumé. Using a whole page of your application tomerely repeat the contents of the other pages is doingyourself a serious disservice.

Your cover letter should add new information to yourcandidacy, such as personal traits, work habits andwhy you’re genuinely interested in the job. Andimportantly, it should be heavily customized to theparticular opening you’re applying for. Don’t send thesame letter for each job you apply for.

4. Learn from past mistakes.Effectively job searching isn’t just about getting a joboffer; it’s about identifying jobs where you’ll excel andbe happy and avoiding the ones where you won’t. Ifyou’ve ended up in jobs that weren’t quite right foryou in the past, there were probably signs youoverlooked during the hiring process.

Avoid making similar mistakes in the future byreflecting on what red flags you ignored in the past --such as an unpleasant interviewer or a culture thatdidn’t feel like a fit -- and vowing to heed warningsigns this time around.

5. Stop agonizing about when or whetheryou’ll hear back from an employer. One of the worst parts of job hunting is sitting aroundand wondering when you’ l l hear back from anemployer after you interview or submit an application, and trying to read into every tiny sign from anemployer.

Do yourself a favor, and vow to move on mentally afterapplying or interviewing. Tell yourself you didn’t getthe job so that you’re not sitting around agonizingabout why you haven’t heard anything, and let it be apleasant surprise if they do contact you. This approachwon’t hurt your chances, and it will make you a wholelot happier in the meantime.

6. Help another job seeker. If you spot a job opening that looks perfect for afriend, pass it along. Or if you have a talented contactwho’s applying at a company where you know thehiring manager, reach out and put in a good word.

Finding ways to help other job seekers isn’t just a kindthing to do; it'll also make you feel good, pay forwardany help you’ve received yourself and -- here's the self-interested part -- put you front and center on the radarscreen of people in your network, which can only helpin the long-run.

15 CareerMistakesto Avoidin 2015

Expert advice for stepping upyour game at the office, online

and while job searching.

Sometimes the best way to startdoing something right is to stopdoing something wrong. Career-wise, this particularly rings true.Witness a professional sea changeafter you remove these 15 mistakesfrom your repertoire.

Applying for any and every job.Unemployment can feel desperate, but you must still be conservativeduring a job search. Don’t submitjob applications and résumés forpostings for which you’re notqualified, says Dan Schawbel, careerexpert and author of “PromoteYourself: The New Rules for CareerSuccess.” For one, “You won’t haveany positive results, becauseemployers are looking for a perfectmatch.” And on the off-chance youdo get the job, you might findyourself overwhelmed to fill a rolefor which you’re ill-suited.

Having a flimsy social-mediapresence.If you can't be found online at all –or if Googling your name leads arecruiter or employer down a NSFWrabbit hole – you’re sending thewrong message. Safeguard yourTwitter feed and Facebook timeline.“Before you post a comment online, think: Is it stupid, thoughtless andinsensitive? How will this affect mycompany? How could this beinterpreted by someone whodoesn’t know me?” says AndreaKay, an author, career consultant, syndicated columnist and speaker.“And remember that anything youwrite – emails included – can beeasily forwarded and read bysomeone you may not haveintended to read them.”

Ignoring your LinkedIn account.Revive your rusty LinkedIn account, not to mention your rusty career. This isn’t just a useful website whenyou’re job searching. LinkedIn is alsocritical for documenting youraccomplishments, networking withcurrent and prospective businesscontacts and staying up to speedon industry trends.

(article continued from Page 5)15 Career Mistakes to Avoid in 2015

Being a team of one.Remember that career success iscommunal. Are you switching careers?Tell your friends and family. Are youseeking continued educationopportunities? Speak with yourcolleagues about previous coursesthey’ve taken. Are you struggling withhow to handle a particular workplacechallenge? Consult with a mentor.Relying solely on who and what youknow could lead to unnecessarysetbacks (plus it’s lonely).

Not keeping up with the latest newsand trends.Staying out of the loop about yourcareer and industry will keep you out ofthe running for good job opportunitiesand raises. And you’ll appear uninformedduring interviews (which is appropriate, because you are uninformed).

Being passive about your worth.Attempting to negotiate a higher salaryupon receiving a job offer doesn’t makeyou disagreeable. And if you’re currentlyemployed and generating consistentlystellar work, it’s understandable thatyou’d request a pay bump.

Being the office pariah. It's a bad idea to skip every office happyhour and out-of-the-office lunch. Theseevents are where you'll earn the most

personal capital, and who knows whenyou might need a professional ally? Doexercise restraint, though – being theoffice gossiper isn't a good look, either.

Quitting your job search once employed.Never rest on steady-paycheck laurelsand then fail to network, keep yourrésumé updated, or stay tuned intoemployment trends and jobopportunities in your field. You don’twant to be caught unprepared for asudden change of fortune.

Complaining too much.Subpar salary, sour supervisor, [bad]schedule. All are valid reasons to bebummed about your place ofemployment. Just be mindful of howquickly healthy venting turns intoincessant complaining. Neither yourprofessional nor personal circle will wantto hear too much of your griping. Ifyou’re miserable at your job, makemoves to find a new one.

Working while sick. You’re not a professional martyr if youcome into the office sick, you’re justPatient Zero of the office plague. Take thenecessary time to recuperate at home;doing so will prevent you from spreadinggerms, and it could also keep you frommaking some cataclysmic, cold-medicineinduced, career-damagingmistake.

Failing to continue learning.Your degrees and/or on-the-job trainingwill only take you so far. Any job'srelevant skills are fluid, and it’s easier tobe constantly learning than to have toplay catch-up.

Being a clock-watcher.While you’re at work, be at work. Andput in a full day’s work at that. “If youarrive in the nick of time in the morningand pack up five minutes early in theafternoon ... you are sending themessage that you are just going throughthe motions,” says national etiquetteexpert Diane Gottsman, owner of TheProtocol School of Texas. “Making apositive impression, being seen as ateam player and showing your boss (andfellow colleagues) you are invested inthe company requires you to arrive earlyenough to make your first cup of coffeebefore the day begins and finish aproject that is time-sensitive, regardlessof what the clock says.”

Being one with your smartphone. We know this one is a toughie. Butconsider limiting the texting,Instagramming and personal calls whileyou're on the clock. Gottsman suggeststurning your phone off altogether.“Nothing will kill the deal for you at a jobinterview, in a meeting or with a client, like a cellphone making a vibrating noise

in your pocket, briefcase or purse,” shesays. “It sends the message that youeither lack executive leadership skills byforgetting to turn your cell off or thatyou are waiting for a call that is moreimportant than the meeting you arecurrently in.”

Expecting your manager to manageyour career.Don’t wait on a busy boss to buoy youup every rung of the corporate ladder.Toot your own horn from time to time.Provide your own evidence for why youshould have a raise. Do your ownresearch to enroll in courses to learn newskills. “Companies care about making aprofit, not about your career. So it's yourresponsibility to take charge,” Schawbelsays.

Ignoring your company's overallmission.Lend a hand during important officeinitiatives. Offer encouragement orfeedback when your colleagues areworking hard on a project. Makesuggestions on how to improve businessas a whole, not just in your department.Being a dependable colleague will makeyou a greater asset to your team andcould ensure your longevity in yourposition.

Plenty of core career advice is applicable throughout your working life, butother advice is more time-sensitive and only works at certain times in yourcareer. Here is the best career advice for every decade of your life.

TEENS

Go for variety. “To find a career later that you enjoy, be certain to try out asmany different careers as you can,” says Carole Stovall, president and CEOof SLSGlobal. Look for summer jobs, after school work, summer programsand internships.

Todd Cherches of BigBlueGumball agrees. “Don’t be afraid to try or to fail. That’s what these years are meant for. Don’t feel that any job is beneath you, because it’s not. At this stage of your life, everything is a learningexperience.”

20’s

Now is the time to find a job in the field where you’d like to pursue a career.“There are many things to consider, but the most important issues is toconsider a job that you actually like, whether it is in your major or not,”Stovall says.

It’s also a good idea to start establishing your individuality. “Stop comparingyourself to your friends, especially the ones you went to college with,” saysChristine Sirois, a freelance journalist in her 20’s. “Once you’re in the jobmarket, it’s not a level playing field and comparing yourself to your friends is

a recipe for feeling inadequate and unhappy. Instead, set goals and work atyour own pace to achieve them.”

30’s

At this point, you’re hitting your stride, but you should remain flexible in casesomething new and interesting comes up, Cherches says. “You want to beworking at what you are good at and what you like to do, and settingyourself up for success, while still allowing for opportunities to take risks andto grow.”

Being assertive can help set yourself up for that success, says Jill Ivey, seniorassociate at WIT Strategy. “Be clear about what you’re looking to get out ofyour position. If it’s not a good fit, look at other options. Don’t stay in a jobthat you hate, or that isn’t fulfill ing, or where there’s no room foradvancement because you’re afraid of change.”

Alisha Karabinus, lecturer in rhetoric and composition at Purdue University, says your 30s are the time to ask for things and make a clear case for whyyou should get what you want. “Are you valuable? Are you essential? Stopgrousing and make a case for a raise or a bonus. Be ready with a clear caseand quantifiable deliverables if applicable.”

40’s

This is the time you should establish yourself as an expert, says Peter Englerof Engler Career Group. “Develop a career and a resume that few can

10WAYSTO PERFECT YOURPERSONALBRAND

Personal branding isn’t anything mysterious. A lotof it has to do with making sure employers, recruiters, professional contacts and just abouteveryone knows what you’re good at and what youcare about. And you’ve got the perfect space toshow what those things are: the Internet. Fine-tuneyour professional image with the following steps.

Start by Googling your name. What’s in a name search? Krista Neher, CEO ofBoot Camp Digital , a social media trainingcompany, puts it like this: “Google results are nowgoing to be your first impression, so you shouldtreat them that way.” Ideally, a vanity search wouldyield several websites and pages that show you theway you want to be perceived. If not, try the nextfew tips.

Create a personal website.“Even if you don’t have much to say, a personal

website is really powerful because it allows you toset the stage for what you want people to thinkabout you, and you have 100 percent control of it,”Neher says. “And it will likely show up at the top ofsearch engine results.” She says sites like GoDaddymake it relatively easy and cheap to buy a domainand build a site.

Clean up your dirt – or at least push it to thesecond Google results page.Say your Google search yields an unflattering localnews article. “If you have strong and active socialnetworks and a personal website that other peoplego to, over time, those should outrank most newsstories,” Neher says. She points out that Googleoften lists 10 websites on its first page of searchresults, so push the cringe-worthy article to pageNo. 2 by creating and actively updating severalsites or social media accounts.

10WAYS TO PERFECT YOURPERSONALBRANDWrite book reviews on Amazon. One type of page that may elbow out unflatteringarticles is an Amazon page that shows customerreviews you’ve written, Neher says. “If I wantedpeople to think I’m passionate about social media, presumably, I’ve read some social media books,”she says. “So I would go on and leave reviews forall those.”

Tweet your #personalbrand.Twitter can also help show others what you’reabout. Plus, it’s an easy way to get your face infront of potential employers. “Engage withcompany leaders or recruiters on Twitter to learnmore about open opportunities and developrelationships,” tweeted Kimberley Kasper, chiefmarketing officer of Jobvite, in a U.S. NewsCareers Twitter chat. Just remember to keep yourcomments PG and PC. Tweets can be deleted, butscreenshots live forever.

Create a Google Plus page.“Google Plus (owned by Google!) is the perfecttool to use to tell Google what you want it toknow,” tweeted online job search expert SusanJoyce in the Twitter chat. Career coach PhyllisMufson agrees. In an article about building your

online presence, she suggests starting the quickprocess by simply transferring your LinkedIninformation to your Google Plus account.

Make a killer LinkedIn profile.More than 90 percent of recruiters find andcontact job candidates through LinkedIn, so makesure your profi le impresses them. Add aprofessional-looking photo, and fill out everysection you can, Neher says, pointing out that thesite now offers sections for volunteer experience, academic courses and more. Jenny Foss, founderof the career blog JobJenny.com, mentioned inthe Twitter chat that you should also add “acompelling headline that uses both key wordsand draws the reader in.”

Make new LinkedIn connections (with grace). When connecting with someone you don’t reallyknow – a contact with whom you briefly spoke afew months ago, an industry peer, say – don’tsend the default, “I’d like to connect with you”message, Neher says. “Let them know why youwant to connect with them,” she says. “People aremuch more likely to say ‘yes’ to that.” Another no-no? Asking for something, such as a job or sale, upon first messaging a new contact.

Actively post on LinkedIn.Show your interest in the industry by sharingarticles, writing status updates and takingadvantage of LinkedIn Publisher, which allows forlonger-form posts, Neher says. “I would muchrather hire someone who shows some kind ofpassion and interest in the industry thansomeone who doesn’t,” she adds. She suggestsparticipating in LinkedIn groups specific to yourfield, too.

Keep your brand consistent.Personal websites, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google Plusand Amazon are just the beginning. As you createmore online personas, be sure to keep themconsistent and up to date. Don’t be “Billy” onTwitter and “Will iam” everywhere else, forexample, and make sure your work history onLinkedIn aligns with what you listed on GooglePlus. These sites should create a strong brand, nota confusing one. “The more things you createabout yourself online, the more you’re controllingyour own message,” Neher says.

Despite your expertise, it’s important to keep learning at this stage, Cherchessays. Technology and the marketplace change so quickly that you’ll need tomake an effort to stay current. “Your strength lies in combining your years ofexperience with your ability and willingness to stay ahead of the curve. You

may also be thinking about what you want your ‘leadership legacy’ to be.”

Artist Ann Klefstad says to look beyond regular jobs. “What has worked forme is to take the skills I have and work like the devil to create opportunitiesto use them, freelancing or consulting.” She recommends increasing theamount of your involvement with things you have affinity for and activelywork to meet people involved with them.

60’s and beyond

At this age, you can market yourself as a sage, but stay humble enough tolearn from those younger than you, Cherches says. “You want to be amentor, and yet be willing to be mentored. With that combination ofattributes, you will have much to contribute and be much in demand.”
