The Lake County Haven empowers homeless women and their children
to achieve permanent, independent living.
Fall 2019
Haven News
Mental health is an important component of everyone’s
well-being. Depression, anxiety and other emotional conditions, if
left untreated, can affect nearly every aspect of your life. They
can even prevent you from fulfilling the daily responsibilities
necessary for independent living.
Many of the women who seek help at Lake County Haven suffer from
some form of mental illness: depression, anxiety, post-traumatic
stress, or eating disorders, to name a few. Last year 80% of LCH’s
residents reported at least one mental illness.
People suffering from mental health concerns generally remain
homeless for longer periods of time. They tend to lose contact with
family and friends, limiting their social support during this very
difficult time. Relationships are hard to maintain if you are too
afraid to reach out to others.
Depression and anxiety also create barriers to employment. It’s
impossible
to keep a job if you are too depressed to get out of bed in the
morning.
The importance of programs like Lake County Haven that provide
intensive, person-focused interventions is clear. Staff at the
Haven work alongside our residents to ensure that they are
receiving adequate treatment for any conditions that may be
limiting their ability to live independently. Not only do our
residents learn about finding a job, saving money, and managing
debt, but they also learn how to identify and manage their
emotions, resolve conflicts, and live a life free from abuse.
From Hopeless to Hopeful:Mental Illness and Homelessness
“My depression didn’t go away. My days spent at The Haven were
in pain. I had to learn how to work through the emotions of sadness
and anger. Most importantly, I had to find hope.”

doing things on her own. But she had a hard time finding a
permanent job. She was good at finding odd-jobs here and there and
did what she could to provide for herself and Rachel. In fact, she
often set out very early in the morning, leaving Rachel to get
herself to school. All the moving around, uncertainty, and stress
was building up inside Rachel. She became depressed. She stopped
going to school. When school tried to check in on her, they were no
longer at that address. Rachel and her mom were often at odds with
one another. They were lost—emotionally, geographically, and as a
family. Seeing how Rachel was being affected by their situation,
Karen realized they needed help and she reached out to the
Haven.
The Path Ahead
Once here, things began to turn
around. Karen got help finding a permanent job. Rachel had a
place to truly call “home”. She started going to school again and
had friends to talk to and hang out with after class. Both Karen
and Rachel received counseling to help them heal and begin
rebuilding their family. “The Haven believed in me when I didn’t
believe in myself…sometimes you have to let other people be
positive for you when you can’t do it yourself.”
Lake County Haven helps women and children find a path out of
homelessness. Each and every day, our residents work to rebuild
their lives. For many, it is a constant uphill struggle. Here
is...One Woman’s Journey.
RACHELA Bump in the Road
Rachel didn’t want to move—again. This was the fifth place she
had stayed in just as many weeks. At 14 years old, all she wanted
to do was hang out with her friends, go to the movies, maybe even
gather up the courage to talk to the cute boy in her math class.
Instead, her free time was spent following her mom from place to
place, hoping for a decent meal and a safe place to sleep for the
night.
Stopping for Directions
Rachel’s mom, Karen, was smart and resourceful. She prided
herself on

On Saturday, May 18, Lake County Haven hosted our 2019 Spring
Fundraiser, “Nashville Rocks the Haven,” at Austin’s Fuel Room in
Libertyville. This sold out event was definitely the highlight of
our year!
This year’s event featured the country-rock band, Levon! Guests
enjoyed listening to the band, bidding on live and silent auction
items, and dancing the night away!
