Orchid News Kentucky Orchid Society, Inc. March 2021 Louisville, KY Have you paid your dues? See Linda Solley-Kanipe. Newsletter Editor: Gloria Teague, [email protected]The President’s Corner Hello everyone. As I write this, KOS has just completed our first auction of 2021, which was a great success! Multiple members participated, all of whom seemed to have had a great time, and the society made a nice profit, most of which will go toward speakers fees. Many thanks to all those who helped organize this event, those who donated plants, and all those who joined in the fun and spent a few dollars on a new orchid. There were some great buys and some spirited bidding! I’m sure we will do this again in a few months, particularly if we are still in lockdown mode. Be sure not to miss it! We have had some interesting presentations recently through our society and our sister societies. I will continue to send you information about upcoming events as I receive it. Doug Martin’s presentation this month on growing hardy orchids in your garden should be a good follow up to Jeanne Rinehart’s outstanding presentation on native orchids last month. The Miami Valley Orchid Society is planning to place a bulk order for two new orchid publications. We can order through them and will get a better price as a group than we would otherwise. If you are interested, send an e-mail to Eric at [email protected]. Here is the information on the publications, from Eric Sauer (president of MVOS): The first book is on Paphiopedilum by Guido Braem- This is a new volume of all the Paph species- It is at the publisher now and will be ready soon- A copy of the cover is attached. This is an update of his previous works. He still also has copies of his Phragmipedium book and one on Darwin, so let me know if you are interested in those as well. Will have final cost soon. More information on his other books can be found here: Product List (braembooks.com) The Second book is co-authored by David Haelterman from Columbia. This is a work on native Colombian Orchids. He is able to get a significant discount off the bookstore price for us and the price will be $125 plus a small amount for shipping. David was here this past February as one of our featured speakers at the Mid America and will also be joining us again via Zoom in May! He sent me several images from the book and the Photography is quite nice- It is a listing of the orchid species from the National Park
