HAVE YOU DONE ALL YOU CAN TO SECURE YOUR ATM NETWORK?An ATM operator’s guide to security
2Everyday mader easier™ with NCR Secure
Attacks on ATMs continue to be a major issue for our industry. We take these threats extremely seriously and we fully understand the impact that these criminal activities cause to our partners and your customers.
The attacks also serve as a reminder that ATM architectures across the industry can be vulnerable to criminals. With that in mind it is vital that ATM operators remain proactive and vigilant. To reduce the risk of attack the industry needs to adopt a holistic, multi-layered and dynamic logical and physical security strategy.
To help you with the development of your comprehensive security strategy, NCR has compiled a list of major recommendations for securing your ATM network.

Protect against the rising wave of logical (software, malware and electronic) attacks
Eliminate the ability to have unauthorized files loaded onto the ATM by preventing the ATM from being booted from removable media. Ensure only authorized files are loaded by deploying a policy and process for secure software upgrades.
Prevent unauthorized users from gaining access to administrative functions of the ATM by implementing password for BIOS editing. Back this up with an effective password management process that changes passwords on a regular basis and controls who has access to critical passwords. Define different accounts for user privileges.
Establish a firewall to protect from files being transferred onto the ATM from external sources. Protect the ATM if files get loaded by installing anti-virus mechanisms. NCR recommends active whitelisting applications which go beyond traditional anti-virus programs specifically the deployment of Solidcore Suite for APTRATM.
Clean up the drives and further reduce the risks by removing unused services and applications.

Become more proactive in how you can identify
patterns of activities that could be fraudulent
Deploy a responsive, real-time fraud system to ensure your fraud system identifies suspicious patterns of behavior to stop fraud. Monitor fraud across the enterprise to protect from attack.
Reduce your risks from the most common forms
of physical attacks on ATMs
It is important to consider the environment, and scale the physical security protecting the ATM accordingly. ATMs in unattended public locations are at highest risk. Utilize an alarm that will alert when the top box is opened. NCR also recommends the use of other deterrence methods such as:
• Surveillance monitoring, which will also detect and record suspicious activities around the ATM
• Appropriate signage• Adequate ambient lighting
Follow these best practices to increase ATM Security
