REFLECTION FOR TODAY SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

It was really tough having a skin disease! Not only did you have to suffer the nastiness of the complaint, you were condemned by society to live apart from your community and to take no part in communal worship. Jesus cut through all these strictures; he spoke to the sufferer, touched him, healed him, and sent him off to carry out what was necessary for reconnection with mainstream life.

Throughout history, people have been labelled as ‘unclean’, ‘undesirable’, or ‘inferior’, usually because they are in some way different. We’ve taken on words like ‘ghetto’ and ‘marginalise’ to cover such situations:. Perhaps we may tut-tut about the unfairness of it all but we rarely do anything about it, maybe for fear of being tarred with the same brush ourselves? And we laugh when cartoons ridicule another group, even make jokes ourselves, disregarding any further hurt we may cause to a people already smarting.

The way society had condemned the leper provoked Jesus to anger – and he immediately did something about it. Even if we don’t have opportunity (or courage?) to act as Jesus did, we can at least try not to inflame situations. St Paul wrote to the Corinthians: “Never do anything offensive to anyone”. If we find ourselves confronted by attempts at humour that disregard the sensibilities of other people, let us put a stop to that humour or at least walk away. They also are God’s children.

POPE FRANCIS, THE SYNOD, FAMILIES, RELATIONSHIP AND YOU Pope Francis’ voice resounds in the media and in our homes. His extraordinary impact invites us all to consider: what is the impact of our “voice”, our witness, in the environment in which we live and work? We can make that kind of reflection as individuals or collectively as a faith community. A synod in fact brings both those streams together. Invited individuals head to Rome not as soloists but as men and women who seek to echo the wisdom and insight that emerges from a collective period of prayer, listening, consultation, and deep reflection. The current ‘Synod on Families’ has entered a new phase. Pope Francis wants us to focus on practical pastoral approaches which uphold and strengthen the beauty of married life and also accompany and guide those whose relationships are not unfolding within the bond of marriage. To this end a further survey has been sent to all Catholic communities across the globe. The Bishops invite you to add your voice to this questionnaire. We are acutely aware of the many people who in their hearts consider themselves Catholic but are not regularly at Church. Please encourage these family members and friends to participate. Of particular concern to us are those who see themselves as beyond the Church: perhaps some divorced and remarried, or gay women and men. We urge you also to add your experiences through the questionnaire. No-one walks beyond the reach of the Good Shepherd. Some of the questions may resonate more with some people than with others. That’s fine. Indeed not every question need be answered. But through Facebook, websites, and printed booklets, your voice as well as those of targeted groups such as our priests, RE teachers, and marriage preparation teams etc will be heard. In this way we will deepen our knowledge of who we are as the People of God in Aotearoa and our submission will be a truly collective response to the Holy Spirit’s on-going work within each of us and the Church in this land. The Catholic Bishops of Aotearoa New Zealand.

To access the questionnaire online visit www.catholic.org.nz and follow the instructions from there. To respond using a Word Document visit www.catholic.org.nz to find an electronic copy which you can complete and return by email to Simone Olsen, Communications Adviser, [email protected] If you would like a printed copy of the questionnaire to be sent to you for you to fill in and return by post please ring Simone Olsen, Communications Adviser, 04 496 1725 or email her [email protected] For any queries regarding this consultation process please contact Simone Olsen, Communications Adviser on the email or phone number listed above.

ST MARY’S CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL

The dynamic and passionate new new entrant teacher had a plan that if her 11 new entrants all cried in the first ten minutes of the first day she was going to sit down on the mat and cry with them – moral support and all that! Fortunately it didn’t happen and we have a very happy class family who, with the occasional “mum hug” from their teacher, are already learning in Room 12. On Thursday afternoons we will welcome “Little Learners” into our class which sets them up beautifully for an easy transition into school. A new initiative in our Intermediate Department, The Inquiry Learning Centre, has our senior students working in a modern learning environment best suited to the individual needs of Year 7 and 8 students. This week they have had a Beach Day at Waimarama and visited the EIT Careers Expo so have a look at their blog http://stmhawke2015blogspot.co.nz and see the engaging learning experiences our senior students are given at St. Mary’s. Living Lent’ - By Fr. John Davine

“Lent” - where did this name come from? Living ‘down under’, we are a bit out of step with the places from which Christianity came to us. The word Lent is an old English term meaning ‘springtime’. Lent is the time of preparation for Easter, beginning with Ash Wednesday and finishing the Wednesday before Holy Thursday and the beginning of the Easter Triduum. Lent, then, is the period in which we look forward to the new life that we celebrate through the Resurrection of Jesus and our sharing in that new life through faith and baptism. The focus on baptism and penance during the Lenten season was restored by the Second Vatican Council in 1963 and was further emphasised by the promulgation of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) in 1972. During Lent, the Church prepares us for Easter, by recalling our baptism if we are baptised, or by preparing us for it if we are unbaptised. For the unbaptised, this is marked by the Rite of Election for catechumens, celebrated on the first Sunday of Lent and culminating in the joyful sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil. Ash Wednesday reminds is of the penitential aspect of Lent. Penitence is about turning away from sin and towards God. It is about using the power of the Spirit of Christ who dwells in us, getting rid of the obstacles that come between ourselves and God. There is more to penitence than getting rid of obstacles, however: it is focussed on becoming closer to Christ and being more involved in his relationship to his Father, more involved in his relationship to us and others.
