Even well-meaning people can be part of a community drug problem ifthey don’t properly dispose of unused prescription drugs or over-the-counter medications. Careless disposal can mean drug compounds

leach into a community’s water supply or into the wrong hands where theymay lead to abuse and addiction. With funding from the national Drug-FreeCommunities program, the Barry County Substance Abuse Task Force andlocal law enforcement agencies have placed permanent collection dropboxes in three law enforcement agency locations. Accessing the box at theBarry County Sheriff’s Department this week are (from left), Liz Lenz of theBarry County Substance Abuse Task Force, Jason Sixberry of the CountySheriff’s Department, Jerry Sarver, chief of the Hastings City Police, andJeff Pratt, detective with the Hastings City Police. Electronics & Medication Collection will be at the Barry CountyFairgrounds today (Saturday) from 9am until 1pm. They will takealmost any hazardous waste, but there is a list of items that theywill not accept. There is a charge for tires based on size and howdirty they are, otherwise disposal is free. Again this fall theMedicine Take Back Project will accept your prescription and othermedications for disposal. Please keep medications in original con-tainers with the name of the drug on the label, destroying any per-sonal information. Help keep our community safe by using thehazardous waste program.
