What an amazing first month of STEAM we have had! It is so nice to see students in person. One of my favorite things about teaching STEAM is watching the students grow as critical thinkers throughout the school year. STEAM - Bins All students participated in STEAM bins this month. I like starting the year off with these bins, as they allow the students to explore the different materials in the STEAM room. I also use these bins to teach classroom routines and expectations. My favorite part of using STEAM bins is watching students be creative. STEAM - Kindergarten The last week of September brought us to STEAM bins again, but with a focus on engineering based on the book Rosie Revere, Engineer by Andrea Beaty. After listening to the story, students discussed what engineers do and used various materials to engineer their own projects. Our Kindergarten students also participated in an activity based on the book I’m NOT Just a Scribble by Diane Alber. STEAM - Grade 1 Along with exploring STEAM bins, the first grade students spent two weeks on activities based on the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. The first week they explored chromatography (the process of separating components of a mixture) through the eyes of a scientist. They learned that scientists do experiments by making predictions, performing the experiment, and collecting data. Using the paper experiment (coffee filters), students used washable markers and drew a circle around the center. The filters were then folded, and the students waited a few minutes for them to dry. Once dry, the filters (just the tip) were placed in water. The students observed the water move up the filter and witnessed the separating colors. Scissors as a Tool One of the biggest misconceptions about the STEAM acronym is the “T” for Technology. The students know that technology is the use of digital devices: laptop, phone, desktop, robot, etc. However, what the students don’t know, and what I teach them, is that technology is a tool that makes jobs easier. This month, the students learned that scissors are a type of tool that make our jobs easier. The students also listened to the story Henri’s Scissors by Jeanette Winter. STEAM Education is an approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking.
