IMPROVING COMMUNICATION WITH OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY AND PARENTS To get our messages out there we now have a new website that we will be managing from our school. This will mean that our website will be more up-to-date than in previous years. It also has a new look. Thank you to Tina Martella for her persistence and thoroughness on leading this new communication platform. Please Google Harvey SHS and click on the website link. Connect is another tool that will be “rolled out” in the next couple of weeks. Some students and their families are already accessing Connect. There is some information in this newsletter that will outline what it can be used for and how you can access it to stay linked with the school about all matters to do with your children. 2019 NAPLAN – Years 7 and 9 This year there has been a lot of negative press about the issues of connectivity with the NAPALN testing. While we experienced difficulties on the first day, we have not had the issues experienced by other schools. I am very proud of our students – they have approached NAPLAN with a very open mind; with few issues being reported. There have only been a couple of cases where a student has not coped with the pressures. It is a credit to the teachers and the preparation they have done with the students. You too can be proud of your children. CONDOLENCES On behalf of the Harvey SHS community I extend our sincerest condolences to the Hernaman and Reynolds families over the recent passing of Lockie Hernaman. Lockie is a past student and Mel is one of our hardworking Education Assistants. SCHOOL DRESS CODE With the winter fast approaching it is time to check what non uniform items can be worn. Any clothing item that protrudes from the approved dress code items needs to be clean, well presented and of the appropriate colour. Only plain white, navy or bottle green tops can be worn under their school uniform. News in Teaching and Learning Literacy in Mathematics
An initiative at Harvey Senior High School this term is the introduction of explicitly teaching literacy in our Year 7 – 9 Mathematics Programs. There is no doubt that literacy impacts on students’ understanding of mathematics, particularly word questions.
Dr Paul Swan an experienced mathematics teacher and leader in mathematics instruction supports the integration of literacy in mathematics and has even written books to highlight the need for this instruction.
The challenge we face of teaching mathematical language is that it is different from reading a novel as the text is more dense and may include symbols and graphics. Meanings of words in everyday language can differ from how they are used in mathematics. Meanings of words in mathematics are more precise.
If your child is in these year groups, please support them with their homework and more importantly why literacy is so important to them in mathematics.
A fantastic day was had by all at the recent HSHS Athletics Carnival day on Wednesday 8 May. Congratulations to all those students who took part on the day you have all done your House proud. It was wonderful to see Mitchell House flying through the day to take the honour of Champion house – looks like they are going to be the House to look out for in the future with their fantastic participation rate. The HPE department would like to thank the parents who attended and even more so those that actually had a go in some of the Team Events. A special thank you must go out to Lindsay our school gardener for all of his preparation and helping with setting up on the day. Also many thanks to all staff who organised and ran their individual events throughout the day. HPE Staff

In the fast changing world creative and critical thinking are getting more and more important. The students at Harvey Senior High School are doing some great things in the arts where they have to apply their creative ideas and solutions, the only thing is that they only reach a small audience. Through creating social media pages based purely around the Arts at Harvey Senior High School, these young artists
will get the celebration and recognition they deserve after putting in hours of hard work. The aim is to encourage our young, up and coming creatives to push their ideas, potentials and skills. This is a platform to showcase what happens in the art room at Harvey Senior High School, so please follow the page and give a like to support our small community and the young people that will be holding up the community in years to come.

On Thursday 2 May a number of students from the lower school engagement program were taught about flag protocols. Belinda Maisey CUO (Cadet Under Officer), an Air Force Cadet from Perth, visited Harvey Senior High School to talk
to us about the protocols of the Australian Flag.
Some of the protocols we learnt were:
When raising the flag up it is folded in half and placed over the left shoulder whilst the flag is being raised. The reason the flag is draped over the left shoulder is because that is the side our
heart is on.
If there is someone in uniform present when raising the flag, the person raising the flag will yell the command “stand fast” and once the flag has reached the top of the pole the flag raiser will
yell the command “as you were”.
There is also a certain way to fold the flag. The flag is folded a number of
times and the union jack must be outward facing.
We must never disrespect our flag by allowing it to touch the ground.
When we are in mourning, we fly the flag at half-mast.
LSEP would like to thank Belinda for coming in and giving us the knowledge of
the flag protocols and helping us to fly the flag in our school.

Congratulations to the following students for being award a Merit Certificate for Term 1
Just like all students at HSHS, LSEP students are required to sit the external testings such as NAPLAN and OLNA. However, we all learn in a variety of different ways, and we are all at various stages in our knowledge and under-standings of key Literacy and Numeracy skills. Hence, Curriculum Differentiation is critical to our Teaching and Learning program. It is also critical as students range from Years' 7-10 and in ages from 11 - 15, and thus have individual needs.

At Harvey Senior High School, we show Respect for Self, Others, Learning and the Environment.
Recipients of Letters of Commendation for 10 or more Respectables Term 1, Week 9 & 10 and Term 2, Week 1 & 2.
G O O D S TA N D I N G P O L I C Y The Good Standing Policy is a commitment to developing lifelong social, moral and employment skills in line with the Harvey SHS Moral Purpose.
This policy helps students learn about the consequences of all behaviour and enable them to witness the rewards of their successes and empower their continued progress. It will also hold them accountable for behavioural choices.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Everyone will be issued with a “Harvey Licence” which has 12 good standing points. If the student maintains the full 12 points they have GOOD STANDING. They can exceed 12 points through positive behaviour, academic success and positive contributions to the school community.
Students with less than 12 points will not be able to participate in planned events or gain certain accolades.
Good standing will be restored each semester or can be improved whilst on the good standing passport.
Negative Action Points (-)
Suspension Any actions requiring a suspension will lose good standing on a
point’s per day basis.
