The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre is pleased to host the Canadian Premiere of the feature documentary Kampai! Sake Sisters on March 5, 2020 to celebrate International Women’s Month. The screening is preceded by a talk on saké by international saké educator and promoter Mariko Tajiri. Mariko will host a guided tasting featuring sakés from top producers, include some from the film, following the screening. For centuries, women were forbidden to set foot into saké breweries, let alone be involved with its production. Today, women are the ones driving the most exciting changes within the ever-evolving saké industry in Japan. The feature documentary KAMPAI! – SAKE SISTERS, directed by Mirai Konishi invites audiences into the passionate lives of three game-changing women who are making their mark on the highly competitive, traditionally male-dominated world of saké. Miho Imada comes from a family

of Master Brewers and is considered, thanks to the award-winning saké she produced out of the artisanal Imada Saké Brewery, one of today’s most renowned Master Brewers. Many emerging women brewers consider Miho their big sister, who paved the way for them. Marie Chiba, the manager of a trendy saké bar in Tokyo, is a trail-blazing sommelier. She tirelessly searches for the best saké and her loyal customers, many of them women, especially appreciate her exceptional talent for pairing saké and food in completely fresh and unexpected ways. Rebekah Wilson-Lye, originally from New Zealand, fell in love with saké while teaching English in Japan. Her ability to pick up more flavour and nuances than most sommeliers quickly earned her accolades and expertise to champion the best creations and their brewers all over the world. The stories of these saké sisters offer a comprehensive and mouthwatering

    JCCC Events

portrait of how women are taking ownership of saké and are adapting ancient traditions to create a new era.

ExhibitionsUntil March 29, 2020Artsu Matsuri at JCCC Art Gallery

A celebration of art by Nikkei community artists happens in winter for the first time!

OngoingA Place of Pride: Building the First Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, Raymond Moriyama Architect. at Heritage Hall

In 1964, the Japanese Canadian community opened a new cultural centre, the daring design alluding to a concrete Japanese temple. The designer of the centre was a young, little known architect named Raymond Moriyama.

OngoingS-20 and Nisei Veterans Reunionat Heritage Lounge Display Case

Photographs, documents, and memorabilia are displayed in remembrance of the sacrifices of the Japanese Canadians veterans for the Canadian Army.

Last year, Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado of Japan toured the JCCC Gallery and was astonished at the high quality of art on exhibit. “You Canadians need to tell the world more about your art,” she said. “This work is excellent.” The seventy attendees at the Opening Night of the Artsu Matsuri exhibit currently in the JCCC Gallery would be in complete agreement with the Princess. Photography, paintings, ceramics, hangings, textiles, architectural models and art installations are evidence of the creative talent in the JCCC community. There have been many Artsu exhibits in the past and this one ranks

as one of the best. Amongst the different mediums and styles in the gallery are some eye-opening examples of note. Hashi, Hashi; a model of a Japanese bridge by Ken Sugamori is impressive on its own, but the fact that the bridge is constructed of chopsticks makes it even more astonishing. Seven Veils; a paper sculpture by Reza (RZLBD) Aliabadi, is a layered monochromatic artwork on the wall that flutters in the breeze. Is it a sculpture or a hanging? – maybe it's both. A detailed replica of a miniature Japanese teahouse by Sachiko Palmer brings something completely different

to the gallery – a lesson in the history of Japanese teahouse design in remarkable dollhouse form. The colour, light and texture of Artsu is an uplifting break from the mid-winter hum-drums. Come to the JCCC Gallery and be refreshed. Artsu Matsuri is on until March 29, 2020 at the JCCC Gallery. Artist Walkabout and Presentations will take place on Sunday March 29, 2020 at 2pm. This is always an informative and inspiring art event. All are welcome.

The JCCC is pleased to announce Making Their Way in the World: Building Nikkei Communities will be the next permanent exhibition at the Moriyama Nikkei Heritage Centre. Set to open in the summer of 2020, the exhibition focuses on the Japanese diaspora, a global network of Nikkei communities numbering in the millions. To successfully create this exhibition, we are partnering with several Nikkei communities, museums, and cultural centres from North and South America and Japan. As well we are appealing to you – our JCCC community – to share and/or donate any stories, photographs, and objects related to your Nikkei connections within and beyond Canada. If you have any questions or contributions, please send them to [email protected] or call 416-441-2345. We look forward to hearing from you!

On December 30, a crew of volunteers gathered to inflate 400 balloons which were then corralled into a net to be raised to the ceiling in the Kobayashi Hall. They worked hard to achieve the "right look" for the celebration. By late afternoon almost everything was ready for the next night. As people arrived on New Year’s Eve, they entered the hall to sounds of music by DJ Ralph Yuen. With about 200 guests, the room was busy with activity and greetings. But everyone quickly settled in order to

enjoy the Prime Rib buffet dinner catered by Calvert’s. Immediately following dinner the attendees took to the dance floor. There were opportunities for spot and novelty dances for prizes throughout the night. This year’s attendees were treated to a very special performance. We saw 16 dancers who participated in a choreographed group and single ballroom dance performances. At midnight, the hundreds of balloons

The JCCC New Year’s Eve Dinner and Dance for 2019 was, once again, a great success. cascaded down on the revellers to greet the New Year. Champagne and sushi were served. It was a fantastic celebration! The whole event would not have been possible without the support and sponsorship of Kobo Jewellery Inc., Jo-Cy and Edward Lee, Kay Fujiwara, Midori Fujiwara, Perry and Fenella Chai and our tireless committee members, Sid and Marie Ikeda.

The JCCC’s Annual Shinnen Kai is the right way to start off a New Year! Kobayashi Hall was again the place to be for the annual Shin-nen Kai New Year’s Day Banquet. We saw almost 300 guests join the JCCC to celebrate the New Year with fine dining and entertainment. Chef Kunio Ishii of Toriichi Catering outdid himself again in preparing an incredible array of traditional o-sechi ryori (new year’s dishes) including nishime, zoni, sashimi, sushi and so much more. Rounding out the evening, we had musical

performances by singer, Mrs. Eiko Mernagh and saxophonist, Ms. Yuki Nishimura In addition to door prizes, there was a Share the Wealth draw that saw a few lucky winners share in $800 of prize money. What a wonderful way to start to the year off! The JCCC is grateful for the support and participation of volunteers and staff who worked together to make this event happen.

Finally, but with utmost gratitude, a very Special Thank You to Mr. Kunio Ishii, his family and staff for celebrating this holiday with us each year.

Kunio Suyama (December 24, 1927 – December 27, 2018) was born on the Eve of Christmas in 1927 so the holiday seasons had always been a special time for him. In this featured clip, listen to Kunio describe different celebrations during his youth: from mikan (small variety of tangerines) in his Christmas stockings to making mochi for New Year's celebrations. For Yoshiye Kosaka, preparations for New Year start as early as summertime when the strawberry season ended. In this featured clip, she describes her mother’s process for making saké for the New Year celebrations. Listen to her hilarious recollection of her neighbour being envious of her mother’s delicious saké!

    Celebrations in Japanese Canadian’s Families

Heritage’s exhibit, ”Something Old, Something New” opened with an intimate reception on December 8, 2019 with speeches, cake and tea - a very fitting reception for a show celebrating wedding photographs. This exhibit combined community submissions of photographs with photographs taken from our Archives to produce a tremendously joyful curation. With photographs taken from 1922 until 2019, the show spanned almost 100 years of happy moments in both Japan and Canada. It featured the happy moments of multiple generations as well as some shared family histories, like the dress worn by an older sister, married in 1938 in Vancouver, that was then carried to Tashme internment camp where her younger sister wore it when she married there in 1946. Or the photos of mother and daughter, both

shown dancing on their wedding days. With the addition of wedding dresses and kimono, betrothal contracts, and other artifacts from our collection, it has sparked conversations about how little wedding dress designs have changed or have come full circle in style and the changing dynamics of our Japanese Canadian community. Visitors were often overheard reminiscing about the people and pictures and laughing at shared memories and anecdotes as they made their way through the exhibit! Heritage Archives wishes to thank everyone who submitted wedding photos and stories that helped to make this exhibit a great success. And we look forward to your continued support as the exhibit team begins its work on planning out this year's exhibit.

Curated by Theressa Takasaki, the show, "Somthing Old, Something New", traced weddings from the late 19th century to the present day with photos, documents, artefacts and actual wedding dresses. Most striking was a lacy wedding dress worn by Toshie Takahashi at her 1955 wedding at Hart House in Toronto. According to her daughter, Joy Takahashi, the dress resided on the top tray in her mother's shipping trunk all these years. “I never thought of my mother as being trendy", says Joy. “But in 1955, the "Sabrina" dress style was popularized by Audrey Hepburn in the 1954 movie, Sabrina. I guess, my mother thought it would be quite fashionable to create a short length, wedding dress in this style. She would have been tickled to know that it was on exhibit.” Gazing at the smiling faces in the wedding exhibit provided a much-needed respite from the stress of holiday shopping and commitments. It also brought back memories of people long gone. They reappeared smiling, exuberant and young – like they had never left.

The JCCC held its 9th Annual Fuyu Matsuri – Winter Festival on Sunday, December 1, 2019. Despite the bad weather, we were glad to see hundreds of guests enjoying the food, performances, shopping, and entertainment hosted during the event. Food vendors had offered a variety of Japanese winter comfort foods, alongside our Saké tasting bar. Guests were able to enjoy activities and performances throughout the day, including Taiko, harmonica by Sid Ikeda, a Yosakoi dance, and the ever popular ramune speed drinking contest sponsored by Ozawa Canada. One of our highlights from last year made a return as we also hosted our second annual Holiday Cosplay Contest, where participants put on their most festive cosplays in celebration for the season. Families and children were also able to enjoy activities, including Craft, Gingerbread Cookie Decoration,

and Shodo. In addition, our Games Room caught the eye of the more active children, with fun games that were huge hits. Of course, it wouldn’t be Fuyu Matsuri if we didn’t have our favourite guest, Santa Claus himself, in attendance. In addition to a picture with Santa, children also enjoyed gifts from him. Besides all the fantastic items from our vendors, guests could also win big with our Reindeer Raffle and Silent Auction, with incredible prizes all donated by our generous sponsors. The Fuyu Matsuri – Winter Festival Committee would like to take this opportunity to extend our gratitude to all of our sponsors and participating vendors. We would also like to thank the following supporting organizers: AJC, JP Canada, Sakura Mai, Rook Education Centre, Shodo Canada, Nat’s Robotics Academy, and Ikenobo Ikebana Society of Japan.

    Volunteer Opportunitiesボランティア募集中

There are many volunteer opportunities available at the JCCC throughout the year. These positions include helping at festivals, heritage-related programs, the JCCC Library and many more. If you are interested in, please to subscribe to JCCC Volunteer mailing list on JCCC website: http://www.jccc.on.ca/en/volunteer/

     JCCCでは年中行事、図書館、ヘリテージ関係など年間を通して様々な分野でボランティアの皆様に活躍頂いております。 ご希望の方はJCCCウェブサイトにてメーリングリストへご登録ください。http://www.jccc.on.ca/jp/volunteer/

The JCCC has grown in the past seven years with more events and festivals than ever and volunteer numbers rapidly increasing. To more effectively manage and organize the challenges of organizing volunteers for all of our events, keeping and updating volunteer’s individual information, and improving the volunteer registration process, the JCCC will be implementing a new Volunteer Database that will better support our volunteers. The process of implementation will take some time to become fully operational, but once in place it will greatly benefit our volunteers and events. This system promises to improve the registration process for event participation. Record keeping of volunteers’ service is another benefit of the system and this will provide us with an effective way to identify nominees for volunteer service awards within our JCCC community and provincially. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we implement this new system. For future updates we will notify volunteers via email.
