At the start of the fall semester in September, I had the privi-lege of speaking at our Convocation. On reflection, I thinkthat my remarks to our students, faculty and staff also areappropriate to present to you, our special friends. I am filledwith enthusiasm and optimism about the work that HartfordSeminary does. Please share my journey:

”The work that we do here at Hartford Seminary is thoughtful, and creative; it is grounded in tradition – in fact in several tra-ditions, and it is grounded in careful research, and in the on-going life of faith communities. In many ways we are experi-mental and even “cutting-edge;” we take risks, but we neverintend to offend, and we think very carefully about what we doboth pedagogically and as people of faith.

Our research and our scholarship, our interest and expertise indialogue, our individual and common commitments to peacefuland fruitful relationships between faith communities and with-in faith communities make this a special kind of school.

Together, sometimes intentionally and sometimes not, we rep-resent something of an alternative to accepted wisdom on howto do theological education. We do much of our theologicaleducation around the premise that learning, at least at somepoint, is best done not separately in faith traditions, but in away that ensures that we learn together across and sometimesbecause of our differences. And in learning together we notonly learn about the other, but we learn more about ourselvesand our own traditions than we would if we were learning sepa-rately. At our best, we don’t ignore our differences, we workwith and through them, and we are better for it.

This is also theological education that seeks not to leave theworld outside our door, but to keep the doors and windowsopen – to bring our congregations and our faith communitiesand our existential commitments with us so that they are part

of and often the center of, our reflective learning process, and so thatthey are the beneficiaries of what we do here.

Now I also said it is a privilege to welcome you here today. It isindeed a privilege for me, for others, to work here at HartfordSeminary, to serve the mission of Hartford Seminary, and to be partof this learning community. I would venture to say that it is a privi-lege for all of us to be here today. In a broken and suffering world weare privileged indeed to be able to use this time, and these resources,to think and to learn and to act together.

Use it well, my friends, take advantage of everything we have to offer, both formally and informally, and offer in return all that you have tobring to the rest of us as well. This is your time of preparation andrenewal, and challenge; this is a seedbed, and a research laboratory, and an on-going conversation. Welcome aboard!

May God bless you, and may God be with Hartford Seminary.”
