HARTER THROBSJANUARY, 1978
MEWS 01^ RALPH HARTER ^Bible Bhavan, 3/83> VishnupurT,
Kanpur' 208-002, India
(or) Box j, P.O. Nawabganj, Kanpur 208-002,IndiaEXCITING END TO
UNPREDICTABLE YEAR
A very fine young man of iucknow,Rajendra Ellas, has been
winningrelatives and others to the Lord andbringing them to us to
be baptized-five since our last newsletter. Ibaptized two of them,
and Harinamthree. Of the latter, one was a Hindu while another is
the husband of agirl raised In Kulpahar. It is possible that we
offer the easiestimmersions in our part of India.
Harinam organized a very successful meeting on Dec. 4th in which
hebrought together new converts wrththeir problems and old
converts.withtheir testomonies. Something goodshould come out of
it.
Much of the city of Kanpur wasblacked out for several days
andnights due to the collapse of 50 yr.old machinery and resulting
fire inone of Kanpur's two power houses.Although our electric
supply failedfrom time to time, we were betteroff than those in
other areas of thecity who lacked both lights andwater.
Other news of our dark city isthat smoldering labor unrest
eruptedon December 6th when employees of
one of our cloth mills ganged up onand murdered two members of
the management on the mill premises. A severe battle with the
police followedin which ten employees are reportedto have been
killed. Rumors say that"not less than fifty" were killed.Countless
others were injured.
One of India's best trains crashed150 miles from here Killing
116passengers and crew. One of my former hostel boys, now an expert
welder, was sent to the site to cut upthe engine. The crash was
within astone's throw of a house where iattended a funeral last
July.
Through the years some of you havefollowed the various tragedies
anddisasters of the Washington family.Their latest is that their
house wasraided by the police because theyhad given shelter to a
fellow whoturned out to be a wanted criminal.Out of fear, they left
their housefor the night. In the morning theyreturned to thefr
house only to findit burned out and the roof irallen in.Since then
they have been existingon the front porch. Me are supporting the
youngest . daughter In a
-
mission boarding school.Late in November, I took the three
wheeler on a 250 mile booksellingcircuit of Hamipur District.
Fivetowns were visited including Kulpa-har where I preached on
Sunday. Iam due to preach in Kulpahar againon New Years Day. This
year I intendto spend Christmas in Kanpur,
The 3~Wheeler gets 70 miles to agallon of gas. With gas costing
$2a gallon, that figures out to about3^ a mile.
Bookstore sales have been excellingso much so that we have been
hard-pressed to keep our shelves wellstocked. Shipments from Madras
werealso held up for a month due to thedislocation of rail services
following the devasting cyclone in AndhraPradesh.
The people of India responded generously to ease the distress of
thecyclone victims. Our committee contributed $35 to the cause.
Our Hindi magazine JEEVAM-DEEP isin serious trouble because it
has notbeen able to make it on its own without mi ss i on funds. A
number ofIndian brethren gave generously butthe commi ttee chosen
to manage thebusiness failed miserably. We areplanning to start a
new publicationbut it will not be possible to register it with the
Press Registrar ofIndia. This means that postage costswill be much
higher but there willalso be some advantages.
In the meantime, our printing department has been very busy.
Ourjcompositor and machine operator havenot been able to keep up
with the
demand. The Hindi edition of my book,
"What Kind of a Person Should I Be,"is selling well at the
Kanpur Railway station. A second edition of theEnglish edition Is
awaiting its turnin the printing department. The Hindi edition of
"ABC'S of the Christian Faith," is still not finished.
For a second year, I will be serving as secretary of the
UnitedChristians Committee of Kanpur. V/eare sponsoring a city-wide
feast ofChristmas music on Dec. 26th. I alsocontinue my Wednesday
evening visitsto the Methodist High School where Imeet with their
staff members todiscuss the book of Acts. Twice amonth I have a
two-hour visit withtwo Hindu thinkers who "believe" inChrist but
not in the Bible.
One more college boy has joinedour hostel and we are expecting
oneother by the end of the month. Thesetwo will pay for their food
andother personal expenses, and will bewith us for only five or six
months.
It has been a year now since ArupDas left our hostel and
rejoined hisfamily near Delhi. We hear that heis serving the Lord
faithfully andthat a church has been started inhis house.
North India's cold season is nowupon us. We do not have any snow
inKanpur but it can still get prettymiserable.
I was very sorry to hear of thepassing of my dear friend
ArchieBartley. He seemed well enough whenhe put me on the bus last
April atOcala, Fla.

LATEST NEV/SOn the weekend of Dec. 9"11, Hari
nam and I traveled 300 miles in thethree-wheeler to sell
calendars, etc.at a mission school. When we gotback, we found that
one of the hostel boys, Sunil, had been rushed tothe hospital with
acute appendicitis. No operation was performed thistime, and he is
now quickly returning to normal back here in BibleBhavan. Another
of the boys, Shimon, added to the confusion by developing(probably
out of sympathy) a pain inhis side but he had no fever.

THE MAM WHO HAS EVERYTHINGOne day before my birthday, Harl-
nam came and asked, "What don't youhave?'* Although he went on
to add," that doesn't cost much money,"It would have been a
difficult question to answer in any case. I wasamused to realize
that 1 had joinedthe ranks of "men who have everything."
In the September 4th issue ofChristian Standard, Glen
V/heelerwrites that the average salary ofour preachers in the U.S.
is$13,756. This is more than my salaryand all of our mission
expenses puttogether. It is therefore all themore amusing that I
have everything.
Of course people are always suggesting that I replace my
S-Wheelerwith an automobile. That would bethe beginning of needs
and not theend of them.
I have been blessed with goodhealth, a good house, good
clothing, good food, good friends and goodhelpers. Best of all, I
have JesusChrist. It does not leave room formuch more to be
desired. The onlything I worry about is my income tax.In fact, I
have refused a raise insalary because it would raise my income tax
without really doing anything for me.
Harinam ended up giving me a trayfor the private snack bar I
have setup in my bedroom. That snak barcould also absorb a
Christmas giftor two but I must not start gainingweight again.
"There is great gain in godlinesswith contentment. I Tim.

MOSTLY GOOD WMS
Once again, as is true every yearin Kanpur before Easter,
preachingservices are being held every nightin every section of
this large city.During these weeks some of the yoiingmen get their
first chance to speak. It also provides a good time of fellowship
among the Christians as theysnack from house to house. The
enthusiasm will climax in a UnitedEaster Dawn Service when UOOO of
thecity's Christians will gather in anathletic field downtovm at k
ajoi.
And once again I will be out oftovjn at k Easter Sunday
morningbecause I will be visiting southIndia from March 11th.
Fulfilling a promise that I madethree years ago, I will first
visitthe work of Lois Eees in Andhra Fra-desh. It is not yet known
whether ornot Lois will have returned by thattime from the U.S. but
Emrys will bethere. The program for that week hasnot yet been fully
worked out but itwill no doubt include some stops in
and around Madras. Frraa H^ch 19th'Vjto 26th, I ifill preach and
teach atI a convention of independent brethren
V/( somewhere in the state of Kerela.
The Lord willing, I will be back inKanpur early in April.
During February I made a three dayvisit to New Delhi. The trip
wasbeneficial but I was not stole tosucceed in what I went there to
do.I was able to attend four exhibitions, all of which were
impressive. They were the World Book Fair, Indian Industrial Fair,
InternationalAxt Exhibition and Defense ServicesExhibition. I
returned to Kanpurwith a load of books for resale inour book
store.
On that trip I rode two new trainswhich I had not ridden before.
TheGcmti Express is a daily except Saturday train which makes the
trip toNew Delhi non-stop in ^ hours 10minutes. I was to have come
back ona slower train but due to some mixupI came back on the best
train of allthe Rajdhani Express which makes thetrip in hours. On
the Rajdhani, meals are served to the passengers
:;as on airplanes. The meal served tome included chicken and ice
cream. This train stops for only five minutes in Kanpur before
hurling on toCalcutta, .

The Hincii paper JEEVAN-DEEP is nolonger oiirs but it is still
beingpublished every month. It is farfrom being what we would like
it tobe but for the time being we aregiving them a monthly
advertisementfrom the book store. Our plan tostart another
publication has receded to the background.
A new steel bookcase is about tobe delivered to the bookstore.
Forvariety of selection in Hindi, English and Urdu, our bookstore
may bethe second best Christian bookstorein all of north India.
The three-wheeler is also boastinga new waterproof canvas top,
thistime with side curtains to protectthe passengers from rain and
xfind.
The bookcase and new top were provided for from the Pate Estate
ofSmithville, Indiana. In the past, the same estate has also
furnishedus with two scooters and a watercooler. An annual grant
from an estate at Burlington,Indiana, is alsoa great help in giving
us a freshand healthy start for every newyear.
Kanpur boasted some gorgeous gardens during the winter months.
Ourcaretaker, Salim, did very well asusual with our little patch.
One ofhis Hollyhocks is 9 feet tall andreaching for 10.
My glasses slipped out of my pocket on Feb. 11th and I am having
tomanage with a locally made substitute until a replacement comes
fromAkron. For a week I had to wear myprescription sunglasses both
dayand night and in aH places.

about allof this activity by a Church ofChrist missionary, but the
presentdirector of the ashram was wellenough pleased that he wanted
me tostay an extra week at his espensoThe program of the ashram is
non-denominational
When I went to Sat Tal, I did notexpect that I would be used
thatmuch As it turned out, several ofthe invited speakers could not
comeand I was the most available substitute The main reason why I
wentto Sat Tal was to develop somethoughts and to set them down
onpaper Thus I have written thefirst draft of my next
booklet,"Lessons from the School of Faith"During the rainy season,
I hope toperfect it for print As it standsnow, it will contain
three partss"A Student Testimony," "fi?ovingGod*s ill^". And
"Putting theSpirit First"
Harinam also spent throe weeks inthe mountains working for the
BibleSociety After his university examshe tjill decide whether or
not hewants to make this his lifers work(My impression is that he
wants todo something else) The exams whichwere to be held, in April
xjere firstpostponed until July, then untilAugust This is not the
fault ofthe University but it was forced onthem by a violent
minority
On Pentecost Sunday, May litth, wehad two baptisms in
Vislmupuri, oneby Harinam A neighborhood lady wasbaptized on May
iBth
Unfortunately, the VishnupuriChurch itself has split due to
apersonality clash between Harinamand one of the elders although
theroot of the trouble goes much deeperAlthough the hate displayed
ismuch to be regretted, there areenough Christians in the area
tofill both congregations
Harinam has lived with us foreight shears and is now 21^

limit these ^to twelve, and we do not take on^new students until

in two cases the gscholarships were only changed hfrom one member

This month we must omit our usualfinancial report duo to
circumstances beyond our control The list ofcontributions for April
has beenlost in the mail# Before the losswas realized. Miss Douglas
had leftfor a well deseived vacation inCalifornia# In our next-
newsletterwe hope to bring you up.to date#
Whenever a report is lost in themail,' it is necessary to warn
ourcontributors that their addressescould possibly fail into the
handsof greedy persons who might sendletters begging for money.
Which reminds me to tell you of a
scoundrel' who, for the past twomonths, has been using ray name
tobeg money frcm people# He says thathis daughter has died- Mr.
Harterhas given him money for a x^opdenbox to bury her in but he
needscloth to cover the box# It is entertaining to think what I
might doto him if i caught up with him#
We seem to have lost oxir dogBeter as he has fastened his
iaffec-tions on one of our church familieswhere he enjoys the
con^any of kidsand females# For awhile he wouldstop in during the
heat of the dayin order to rest -under the fans butnow he has
stopped that too. Onceagain our house has become a cat*sparadise#
.
We have also ."lost" one of ourtwo scooters as we , have gif-ted
itto the iSwarupnagar Church#, As itwas, it was a bone of :
contentionbotween all the people who x^rantedto use it# It may or
may not stopthe quarreling but at least therehas been a change in
referees#
For several years, .1 have been
mulling over the idea of turningour press over to our long-time
employee Mongal Sjngh who x^ould thenrun it as a private enteiprise
instead of a mission enterprise o Thematter xjill be decided once
and forall by our local managing ccanmitteeafter considering all of
the prosand cons# A decision is expected inJuly#
Wo. have finished printing thesecond edition of my book,
'*I'lhatKind of a Person Should I Be," butwhen -we got ready to
print the cover, we found the blocks were missing# We have moved
txiice since theblocks -were last used six yearsago# The artistes
designs are alsomissing#
Work has also begun on the secondedition of its companion,
"SemeThings which are Definitely Bad,"xrhich, this time aroxmd,
xd.ll beprinted separately#
The Hindi edition of "ABC's ofthe Christian Faith" is finished
atlast and is being bound# Wo havealso reprinted a Hindi tract
entitled, "IfJater of Life#"
One of the desires of the Kanpurmission is to help Christian
yoxingpeople get a good start in life#During Jxmo we gave financial
helpto one girl that xd.ll allox^ her totalce an advanced co-urse
in tailor*-*ing# Help has also been promised totwo girls wanting to
be nurses, andto txjo boys wanting to be truckdrivers# Another boy
xfhom we trained as a tailor x^ill receive a sewing machine. Some
of these youngpeople become pillars in the churchand then some of
them don't#

Our local Tnanaging ocamiittee has/msfle the leap and decided to
gift\ the tadLntipg laasas (valued at about
/ $1000) to Mir. Mangal Singh who hasbeen our employee for at
least 1^
11 years. Mangal will now run it as aenterprise instead of a
X^mi^Toil'^ehterprise. This equipmentwas originally .gifted to
us bx^?nwe take it to Hamlrpur and GorciaDistricts. The last three
months areclw-vs busy for the bookstore and weexp'tct this to be

The VIshnupurl congregation Is doing fairly well attendance-wise
butIt Is very slow In taking form as abody. If you know v/hat I
mean. It Isone thing to attend services and ItIs something else
again to become amember of the body. There Is alsopressure from
some of the participants to make It a Pentecostal congregation: so
It Is really a verytougii rov/ to hoe.
On the other hand, the SwarupnayarChurch seems to be too
Spiritless.
My tv^/o year stint as secretary ofthe United Christians
Conmilttee of
Kanpur has now ended. During my ten=ure, 1, have glyen the
organizationIts first written constitution.Written or unv/rltten,
the committeehas for years been following therule that officers
cannot serve morethan two years In any post.
Lawrence Lazarus Is still suffering a little from his broken
collarbone, and Victor Walter Is stillplagued with asthma, but both
havemanaged to go to Surguza Districtdown In Madhya Pradesh for the
annual convention of the churches InBrother Getter's area of
activity.
Many 1979 calendars were mailed toour Stateside friends on
September12th. Hopefully they will reachtheir destinations before
Jan. 1st.
SunII DeSMva, who had an attackliving In our hostel. Is now back
Inthe hospital with a second attack. We are sorry to say that his
reputa-lon continues to be under a blackcloud although there are
some whostaunchly defend him.
One recent visitor to Kanpur saidthat there are always two
things henoticed when he visited KanpurItsfilth and Its population.
In othercities, he said, the streets arefull on special occasions
but InKanpur the streets are always full. The Christians of Kanpur
thereforehave a unique opportunity to reachthe maximum number of
people withthe maximum amount of movement.
Hundreds of new trees have beenplanted along some of the roads
Inour part of the city. Kanpur v/lllcertainly be a nicer place In
whichto live If some of them take root.Let us hope for the
best!

INDIAN COOKINGTwo recent requests have come for
Indian recipes. The first request Iignored, to my hurt. The
second wasanswered by sending a cookbook.
For one thing, I employ a cook for$^0 a month and I seldom set
footinside the kitchen. Secondly, mypresent cook, Hari, and his
fatherbefore him, wouldn't have known whatto do with a recipe If
they saw one.
Thirdly, Indian food cooked in theU.S. does not turn out very
well. One American hostess went to a greatdeal of trouble to cook
some Indianfood which I was supposed to praise,but I didn't. I
never heard fromthat church again. Being a missionary returned from
India is a dangerous occupation in many ways.
The Indian spices, which are noteasily available In the U.S.
makemost of the difference. Also, onecannot learn from a book how
to makethe differ(ent types of Indian bread.
What we^fike best of Hari's concoctions is goat meat ground up
andcooked with potatoes and other vegetables. This is best eaten
with thecommonest of Indian breads, the cha-pati. Tableware is not
used but itIs eaten with the hands.
At our house we have two meals aday, the first at 9 a.m. and
thesecond at 5 p.m. Those who want toeat at other times find their
foodin lunch pails (or what we here calltiffin carriers). We have
rice atthe first meal and chapatis at thesecond meal. Twice a
"'iteek we havemeat, once a week eggs, and the restof the time
vegetables. At 9 a.mT'-oHihave a piece of fruit-usually bana-''
nas during this time of year.
