Cancer

• • Cancer is a group of diseases caused by abnormal cell growth and reproduction.

• Different kinds of cancer kind affect specific organs

• ALL forms of cancer involve uncontrolled cell Growth

Cancer (Continued)

• Healthy organisms grow as a result of cell division in a controlled process.

• Cancer causes a large amount of uncontrolled cell division or abnormal cells

• Sometimes cells join together to form a large mass known as a Tumor

Causes of Cancer

• There are many causes to cancer. But most are caused by exposure to certain chemicals

• Ex- Tobacco use causes Lung Cancer

• A chemical that causes cancer is called a carcinogen

Asbestos

• A carcinogen that was once common in building construction

• Mineral broke down into particles easily inhaled.

• Cause lung cancer

• Mesothelioma

Radon

• Radon is a radioactive gas present in some rocks

• The gas seeps from the layers of the rock and soil into homes

• Gas gets in water causes stomach cancer

• L-Term exposure = Lung cancer

Birth Defects

Page 10: Harmful Chemicals. Terminology Cancer Carcinogen Asbestos Radon Birth defects Fetal Alcohol syndrome Cholesterol Nicotine Asthma Kidney Infection Heart.

Birth Defects

• A woman who smokes during pregnancy has a greater chance of giving birth to pre-mature baby

• Stillborn• Cleft palate & lip• Heart defects

• Women who drink alcohol during pregnancy:

• FAS- brain damage and physical abnormalities

• Visual and hearing problems

Heart Disease

• Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United states

• Heart disease occurs when the arteries that supply the blood are blocked

• Coronary artery is major vessel supplies blood to heart

• Chemicals Nicotine narrow arteries

• Cholesterol from food causes deposits to block arteries

• Deposits slow or stop blood flow

Kidney Disease and Infections

• Too many chemicals or wastes in the body such as: uric acid, calcium, ammonia can lead to formations of stone-like masses block flow of urine from Ureter (tube from kidney to bladder)

• Had a Kidney infection cancelled Tour

Asthma

Persons with Asthma have difficulty breathing

Bronchi = Air passages swell

Cleaning products aerosol deodorants pesticides can cause asthma
