Join our Forensics Club
(For students in grades 5-8)
Forensics is the art of public speaking. The public speaking program in interpretive reading provides students with the opportunity to read a published prose or poetry selection expressively before an audience at a tournament. This year’s interpretive reading tournament is tentatively scheduled for Monday, June 1st at Black River Middle School in Chatham. If you are in grades 5-8 and are interested in finding out more about our Forensics Club please read below!
Participation Prerequisites
In order to participate in this year’s tournament interested students must be willing to:
*Choose an appropriate reading selection four to seven minutes in length with the help of the Forensics coaches-Mrs. Bailey and Mrs. Baldassari.
*Meet with coaches for 15-30 minute coaching sessions once or twice a week during lunch as scheduled (until the tournament on June 1st.)
*Practice their selection daily at home
*Make a commitment to see the activity through to completion by signing and returning the attached contract witnessed by a parent.
*There will be a registration fee for students once we are aware of how many participants will be in the Forensics Club this year.
On the day of the tournament students must be picked up from school by a parent at 2:45pm and parents will drive their children to the tournament. A parent will attend the tournament that runs from 3:30pm – 8:00/9:00pm. Dinner for child must be provided by the parents.
Special attention will be given to the suitability of the selection; effective interpretation and communication of the author’s mood and meaning; use of vocal variety and pace to define characters and/or create atmosphere; appropriate use of facial expression; frequent eye contact with audience; clear pronunciation and enunciation; effective voice projection. This activity enables the students to
sharpen his/her reading ability and to become more at ease speaking before an audience.
Our mission is to invigorate and expand the academic and creative life of our students, by funding projects through private donors. Inspired projects from our faculty and staff
which supersede our school budget come to life through HTEF grants.
