HARD REPORTMore On The Picks...
Joe Satriani. "Satch Boogie", Relativity.... True, tisthe season to cast a backward glance at deserving artists theformat might have overlooked --but it's also a time to have a lit-tle fun and expand our musical parameters in general. It'sdefinitely easy to feel comfortable with more color on your air-waves these days. Hence, this nit for the man we feel will pickup where Yngwie Malmsteen left off in the metal to mainstreamcrossover division. And it's not that Joe's style is particularheavy --it's just that metal stations have been done well with anumber of instrumental projects lately, such as David Chastain,Paul Gilbert and Tony McAlpine, and of course Dokken's "Mr.Scary". For your purposes, "Satoh Boogie" is the best tune yet.Actually, the boogie-woogie structure here has more in commonwith Jeff Beck or Stevie Ray Vaughan, and you can bet the manwho taught Steve Vai how to play puts a whole new life into thatfamiliar progression. It's simply the next stop down the line inthe whole roots rock evolution. Test it once or twice and you'llsee....
Joe Cocker, "Two Wrongs", Capitol.... The come-back artist of the year? Well, he's at least a major contender. The first single's overall durability caught many of us by surprise--as did its appeal to both pop and rock listeners. And then there'sthat scorching tour. Now that Joe has capped the roll by cover-ing the cover with Ray Charles on the Grammy Special, it's timeto make your move on the record's best rocking new original.Located at cut 2, side 1, it's easy to find and easy to hear whyCapitol almost went with this one out of the box. It's got someof the tightest, rightest horn charts we've heard lately, repleteand complete with Joe in his blues mood. Rat on....
Willy DeVille/Mark Knopfler, "SouthernPolitician", A&M.... Now here's my candidate for the mostoverlooked album of the last quarter --and that's coming fromone who's never been nuts for Willy. But somehow Knopfler'sdeft playing and production touches make this damn near a DireStraits record, and one that will take over your player if givenhalf a chance. It's come up in conversation with guys like DouqClifton, Carter Alan, and Downstairs Dan over the past severalweeks --and now thanks to WBCN's play on "Southern Politician"we've got a reaction track to report --and thanks to JB and A&M,that special radio edit is on your desk right now. We're seeingserious New England support at the likes of WHCN, WIZN,WHEB and WAAF, where Rick MacKenzie confirms solid listenerinterest and active Top 5 at 5 response. Spend a little time withwhat Mr. Knopfler considers some of his best work outside ofDire Straits, and we guarantee the class will close you, too....
The Godfathers, "Birth, School, Work, Death",Epic.... And when you get to the point when you've hadenough of...well..."nice" songs --there's this squealing chunk ofthe Cult meets the Clash from the Godfathers. The hard drivingguitar line is that all too unusual hook in itself --it's a grabber --and you know the title ain't lost on most of those working stiffsin your target audience. This song was a big hit on the band'sclub tour earlier this year, and for universality and basic chantappeal this is as natural as it gets. Between the music, the mes-sage --and just enough mayhem --the Godfathers could well windup with a healthy hunk of holiday air time. Way past novelty, it'sa fkn way of life, mate....
Record Of The WeekThe Radiators. "Doctor Doctor", Epic.... Sure, you might want to add this simply because you did so well with the first--as did Mark "Hell, the Rads have pulled more calls than any new act" Williams at WWZU. But on the other hand, there's the logicof KFMU's Dave "Too many great hooks to overlook" Ross. Comparisons? We've got those too --"'Doctor Doctor' is the closest thingwe'll ever have to an Allman Brothers/Little Feat dream band." Then again, you might have seen their amazing, never the sameshow twice, (or even three times), in a club near you. Anyway you slice it, they're a band that have earned the coveted Twin Spin.As my momma used to say, "Hooks --not looks". #5 Most Added with 25 this week (including KGB, KRQR, WBCN, WLLZ, KDKB,KOME, WDIZ, WKLS, and WMMR. New at 70*....
NEW THIS WEEKEurythmics, "I Need A Man", RCA.... Just how rockan' rhythmic is the new single? KOME's Stephen Page feels that"With the exception that all the musicians have been switched, this sounds like a Rolling Stones song and is it hot!!".... Al Scott.KZEL, "Eurythmics kick butt. This is a great song for rock sta-tions".... Alison Stewart. WBRU, "An able bodied rock and rollrecord. Gutsy vocals from Annie and infallible songwriting fromDave bring this torchy tune to life".... Karen Small. WGIR, "Oneof the most rock and roll/aggressive songs this band hasdone".... Mike Boyle. WDHA, "It's hard to find words to describehow brilliant it is. Dave and Arnie have outdone themselves onthis project".... Tom Van Sant. WIZN, "It's a natural for us and it'sgonna be bery bery big".... Then there's KFMX's Loris Lanepondering points that our more lascivious reporters have al-ready answered, ''It goes straight into medium, and we'll see howit stacks up".... #1 Most Added with 80 OTB stations, good forthis week's strongest 37* debut....
Foreigner, "Inside Information", Atlantic.... Definite-ly a well timed week here, with four more album tracks hittingthe Hard Hundred --and the single moving 4-1* behind 31 upsand 44 powers to top that list. The top 5 phone count is also up,holding down #1 Requests, no sweat. "Heart Turns To Stone"takes the album lead, with 57 adds and a 47* debut, with "Can'tWait" in with 22 (d79), "The Beat Of My Heart" new on 17 (d94),also 17 adds for the title track, touching down at 97*. Comments:Anthony Alfonsi. WDVE, "The icing on the cake of a great yearin music. Sounds like a Greatest Hits collection".... Dru Dawson,KBAT "A monster. Tried and true Foreigner that is guaranteedto work".... John Cooper. WPYX, "Atlantic may still be releasingsingles from it at this time next year".... Beaver Brown. KDJK,"Hats off to Foreigner for one hell of an album. I guess Mickproducing Van Halen and Lou going solo really helped.".... Newat 5* Album Impact....
Michael Bolton, "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay", Columbia.... What can we tell you cover kvetchers--this isone record with all the positives classic familiarity brings, and no apparent negatives. Why, here's WIXV's Virgil Thompson to tes-tify, "After several tests and overwhelming feedback we added it. I usually hate remakes but the audience pretty much decided onthis one".... Then there's KRNA's Steve Kosbau, "The Bolton got some pretty exciting results for us when we tested it, especiallywith upper demos who usually hate covers".... KFMF's Marty Griffin calls it "Just too damn good to ignore. Play it and watch theaudience respond".... Say hello to Michael's best week yet: #4 Most Added with 25, increased air on WKQQ, WRFX, KMBY, andKWIC. Top 5 phones at KOME, KSJO, WKQQ, WDIZ and WPLR, and heavy play now on KOME, KSJO, WCCC, WKLS, WKQQ,WQFM, WRFX, and WRIK. Currently on 73, with this week's fourth longest Hard Hundred move 60A2*....Love and Rockets, "No New Tale To Tell", Big Time/RCA.... We've got 13 more adds to talk about here --includingKYYS, WKQQ, KATT, KFMG, WKDF, and WRDU. The Current Play column extends to 126 to date, of which 25 increase rotation.Consider that ranks with Floyd, Foreigner, Carrack and Harrison and we're talking performance plus from both the record --andRCA. Stephen Page explains the KOME increase, "After making room for it last week, we moved light to medium, based on reportsfrom various accounts that the album is just flying out of the stores. Seems to be #1 new retail around here".... Up 34-24* on theHard Hundred....

THEHARD REPORT IMPACT TRACKS
MSG, "Love Is Not A Game", Capitol.... Messrs.Schenker and McAuley also lay claim to more majors withKOME, WQFM, KRXQ, WEGR, WFYV, and WYNF leading thelist of 17 just adding. The follow up goes 33 stations deep, withKJJO, KEZO, KILO, KRQR, KFMG, KMOD, WRCN and WRUFamong those already in. The best melody/muscle combo outthere? KOME's Stephen Page reports, "Instant phones for ournight guys. The male population is eating this one up".... FromWRUF's Jason Tyler, "A killer tune, one of the toughest tracksout there right now".... Chartwise, new at 76*....
Great White, "Save Your Love", Capitol.... If we werehanding out a year end Maintenance Man award, Ray Tusken,Ritch Bloom and Capitol would have to qualify for their hangtime with this album. 23 weeks after first charting and it's stillbanging out those bullets! 11 adds, 7 ups (KLOS, KOME, WEGR)and heavy play at KDKB, KQWB, KRQU, KWHL, WIMZ, WNPQ,and WQFM bring in a 48-39* underline. As WQFM's DownstairsDan (who segged straight into this from "Rock Me") pegs it, "Thisis a perfect angst ridden rock and roll ballad".... Already a topfiver at KRQU, KILO, KISS, KJOT, KMJX, and KFMQ....
Kiss, "Reason To Live", Mercury.... Jim Pembertontells me this one's testing beautifully --and that definitelydescribes the overall airplay build. We're looking at 11 moreadds (WBAB, KMOD, KOME, KRQR, KZEW, WEGR, WRKI), withups from WKDF, KDKB, KJOT, KWIC, WZZQ, and KSQY, and15 heavy reports. Underlined 39-36*, with action now on 103....
White Lion, "Wait", Atlantic.... We said you wouldn'thave to wait long for calls --and sho' null, the top 5 tally now in-cludes KBPI, KGB -FM, KNAC, WQFM, KDJK, KEZE, KFMX,WAQX, and WDHA. This week brings in another 12 adds, includ-ing WKLS, WPYX, WPLR, KISW and WCMF, with WLLZ, WDHA,KWHL, KRNA, KFMX and WRIK increasing play. KFMX's LorisLane explains, "Ever since they hit town with Kiss, 'Wait' hasbeen a top request item, and the song continues to showgrowth".... Steve Kosbau. KRNA, "White Lion is pulling somegreat phone activity with our core, and moves up this week"....From WPYX's John Cooper, "We've become big White Lionbelievers. I anticipate big calls and big sales".... Finally, WDHA'sMike Boyle advises, "For those of you on the fence, don't 'Wait'anymore. After 8 days on the air, it is top 5 phones and selling"....Up 61-51*.
ALBUM PLAY PRIORITIESBruce Springsteen, "One Step Up", Columbia....The steamroller from Asbury Park, no make that Saddle River, continues unabated with 20 new stations adding momentum toBruce's latest. This week sees Bruce clocking in with the 9thmost added honors, including WOUR, KATT, KSHE, WAAF,WDIZ, WNEW and KEZE. With a grand total of 89 stations report-ing and all but 7 using this chunk of future bachelor beef in amedium or better rotation, you just gotta know that Bruce istaking it home one more time. There might not be anybody homewhen he gets there but the man still clocks in an impressive 46-33* run on the Hundred....
Sting, "The Lazarus Heart", A&M.... The big story thisweek is adds as AOR switches emphasis from "Little Wing". 14new reporters find this one on their playlist including KATT,KLOL, KILO, and WHMD. A solid move up the chart from 52-43*keeps this stylized project up and running with its third offering.Increases at WVVV and WZZO and top phone action reportedon KFMU and WZEW are just part of the story. Sting's hold ona legion of keenly appreciative listeners continues to give AORmaximum benefits. Watch for "Rock Steady" to slide into a sup-port role with early interest on WFNX, CFOX, KZAP, KZEL andWSHE.... And all this after what could have been the weakestpossible lead track....
Def Leppard, "Pour Some Sugar On Me",Mercury.... Get some rock and roll on those bones and do itwith this follow up fave from the Lep lads. The live shows arechalking up big returns at the box office and a host of new fansso the depth play on the album just makes sense, right? Newaction on KLOL, KFMQ, WKLS, KRZQ, KOZZ and WDVE getsthe boiler stoked and top phones on KRQU and both Denverrockers KAZY and KBPI shows the audience support for thislong lived format pleaser. A good week for the project with an80-67* Hard Hundred hike....
Tesla, "Gettin' Better", Geffen.... 'BLM's Robin Mathieuclued us in, "Tesla surprised us all by nabbing #1 phones afteronly one week on the air".... And so the phones begin again forthis young band. Six report top fivers this week, but Tesla re-quest history tells us there's more to come.... Up 58-49*, thanksto 6 new and 66 now on board....
Whitesnake, "Give Me Your Love", Geffen....Whitesnake's no stranger to the Most Requested, and "Love"begins to make inroads on that chart this week with 11 reportsof top 5 phones, as another 6 ccme on (KSHE, KRXQ, WWCK)and 10 increase. With 107 on, can complete domination be farbehind? A heavy contender for Breakthrough of the Year....28-27*....
Yes, "Shoot High, Aim Low", Atco.... On the tail of theirblow-out tour, the grand old men of cinema rock are putting 'emaway with the new album. This programmer pick from BigGenerator gets a thumbs up response from some impressivecalls this week. KRXQ, WLUP, KGON, and KBPI lead the packwhile increases on KISS, KXRX, WNEW, KQSP and KMBY helpto power up a 35-30* jump for this pyrotechnic masterpiece.Karen Small at WGIR captures the vibe perfectly, "'Shoot High'has always been one of my favorite tracks off 'Big Generator'.This is another gem of a cut."....
Rush, "Lock And Key", PolyGram.... The album thathas revalidated this band as a creative force continues togenerate great tracks for the format. " 'Lock And Key' shouldhave been the first followup for Rush so we are happy to add itthis week. Great stuff", so sez Al Scott at KZEL and he's not alonewith CFOX, KEZO, KPEZ, WHMD and WRIF joining the parade.Top phones at WRCN and KBAT with increases on KGON,WNOR, KGB and WONE and I think another steady growthprofile is in the making. Check the 32-29* bump on theHundred....
Aerosmith, "Rockin' Pneumonia and the BoogieWoogie Flu", Columbia.... You can't get hotter than thisband, with what could well be the Comeback album of the yearriding high at retail and on the charts, a top 5 show on the road, and a first class cover gracing the soundtrack of one of theseason's top movies.... "Pneumonia' finds new play this week at10 (KRQR, KAZY, KOZZ, WZEW). KFMG's Karl Baehr, "Steppedup the Aerosmith after just one week; it's a great remake".... TheBangles' single from the soundtrack, continues its growth, withadds at 4 and increases at 5 maintaining that all important up-ward movement on the chart 41-40....
John Cougar Mellencamp, "The Real Life",Mercury.... JCM takes top honors as the #1 Biggest Moverand lands the number 3 Most Added slot with 53 new doublinglast week's total on. How deep is this album? Can you say Hol-land Tunnel? Loch Ness? Lennox cleavage? KSJO's Patty Mar-tin has cast her vote, "JCM's album has just got to be one of thebest of '87, and 'Real Life' is the natural next track".... Nobodybeats the jump on the chart this week: 51-23*....

HARD REPORT HARD ACTS TO FOLLOW..The Royal Court Of China, "It's All Changed",A&M.... Ten big adds this week grace RCC as easing playlistpressure finds a way at WYNF, IKYYS, WLIR, 'KDF, WDIZ andWGIR. That takes the reservice to just over the 30 station mark. The week's fifth biggest mover with the 96-81* advance....
The Con n ells, "Over There", TVT.... This record is turn-ing into one of the underdog favorites of the final quarter, as weekby week, programmers are throwing their support behind thiswell -deserving band. 'BCN's Carter Alan compares them toTVT's first release earlier this year, "They're similar to the Saintsin that they've got a very fresh sounding rock and roll album, andthe song's got a nice catchy melody, like some of those 60's hits.It has a nice acoustic flavor but it rocks as well. At the musicmeeting, there was really no debate.... It's an add".... Also newat WBRU, KDJK, WDHA and WZYC, 18 total with heavy air at'LIR and WHTG....
Tom Caufield, "Precious Town". Paradox.... Theholidays have afforded Tom the running room he deserves, withadds this week at KZAM, WIZN and WMJY. We tally 30 now onincluding WNEW, KOME, WFYV, KMBY, KMOD, KLAQ andKZEL, where Al Scott tell us, "Really impressed with the Caufield. It has that live feel and a great horn section that defies com-monplace description"....
The Call, "Walk Walk", Elektra.... When "In the Woods"was first released, this tune revealed the band in a rare partymood, and now it seems that attitude is sticking. They're whoop-ing it up to the tune of 27 total, with five new this week. KFMUmakes room as Dave Ross tells us, "They've always been apopular band since 'The Walls...', and we think 'Walk' continuesthat tradition with those distinctive vocals and edgy guitar riffs. This is a band that keeps 'em listening and calling for more"....Now 91*....
Guns N' Roses, "Paradise City", Geffen.... This rock-er has been getting programmer fave comments since itsrelease. "It's the hottest hard rock record around" sez Kim.Alexander, WHCN, while "Dimples" McCafferty at WKNC tonesdown his enthusiasam a notch, "The Guns aren't quite God, butthey're damn close"... For some, seeing the band live has beenthe kicker, for others the hammeriock intensity and strong songstructure are enough all by themselves. HH 95-95....
The Broadcasters, "Down In The Trenches",Enigma.... The 'Casters make waves this week with 10 addstaking the track into the Top Hundred with a 96* debut. KZAP,KEZO, KSJO, WLIR and WKLC are among the latest to jump on,as comments like KSJO's Patty Martin's are coming in daily...."I've been into this Broadcasters' tune since I first heard the ad-vance cassette. 'Trenches' gives me a J. Geils meets the Geor-gia Sats feel. Anyway you look at it, it's a smash".... And KDXR'sMark Zieger, "We're getting quite a kick out of the Broadcasterswith their J.Geils/ Rolling Stones like sound. They're the bandwe all thought we sounded like in our garages"....
Sinead O'Connor, "Mandinka", Chrysalis.... Amajor contender in the Moussehead of the Year award, Sineadobviously has more than her gutsy vocal chords pulling for her,as one of the year's truly quirky but definitely hook -filled formatexclusives finds fans at 21 reporting stations, including WNEW,WBCN, CHEZ, KLBJ, WMAD, KBCO and WDHA.... KLBJ's DonGilmore, "Right under your nose is one of the brilliant debut al-bums of the 80's: 'The Lion and the Cobra'... Could be Benatar.Could be 'til Tuesday. SHOULD be coming out of yourspeakers"....
Peter Himmelman. "Waning Moon", Island.... Thefoundation of Peter's impressive ongoing build is continuingsupport from almost all of the early believers, a rare vote of con-fidence in an age of five and six week "tests". Seven adds pushedthe total over the 70 mark this week as 'BCN, KLOL, WZYC,WAOR and WIXV all came in, as Virgil Thompson remarked,"This classy tune adds sophistication to the sound of the radiostation".... KBAT's Dru Dawson, "Sounds great on CD and real-ly mixes down with the rest of our current product very well"....He's here to stay --as per the 53-46* gain this week....
Timothy B. Schmit, "Don't Give Up", MCA.... Whocan deny that Tim's first outing had a hangtime that made a jokeof gravity. This guy has a shelf life with those upper demos thatothers would kill for and his new release will continue to buildthat rep. Out of the boy action on KXRX, WLVQ, KVRE andWMRY and a lot of projections hep position Mr. Schmit for a runat the Hundred. Best get this one on before your CHR brethrenbeats you to the punch. D-92....
SINGLE FILE --CROSSOVER TRACKS
Grateful Dead, "Throwing Stones, Arista.... Thisone's been a concert classic to 'Heads for ages, and now thattop 40 has it, even your mother will be fit to be tie -tied with that"Ashes, ashes, all fall down" chorus.... History repeats itself asthe track lands another 24 adds, with increasing play at another14. KGON's Inessa York calls it, "A year end treat from one ofthe year's major moments on vinyl".... Now on 123, up 29-21*....
Hooters. "Karla With A K", Columbia.... KOZZ' HarryReynold's dubbed them "One of the hardest working bands inthe business" this week, and if you've had the pleasure of work-ing with, or catching 'em live, you'll undoubtedly agree. Singlestatus has given "Karla" a kick on the rock side, as 13 more addor readd this week, combining wiTh 3 increases to boost the cut13 spots on the chart....
Fleetwood Mac. "Everywhere". WB.... We're countingChristine McVie votes in the Female vocalist category as wespeak, and the way AOR is attacking this Mac track, it's obviousher talents are appreciated on this phase of the project. 13 newthis week, with 9 increases doing the job, powering the single42-34*. Now on 87, 25_ of them heavy to power....
Pink Floyd. "On The Turning Away". Columbia....Floyd walks away with the #1 spot on the Increase Index thisweek with a whopping 33 ups in rotation around the country. Ofcourse the tour continues to enlighten and entrance, as MTV in-tensifies and retail's prime rack space responds accordingly.Adds or readds at 13, as the total swells to 140 (84 in heavy orpower) --good for a 14-11* gain. As KOME's Stephen Page says,"Moses saw the burning bush, I have seen the Machine"....

EURYTHMICS"I NEED A MAN"
. . . When the Eurythmics album came in featuring Annie singing her heart out in "I NeedA Man" I did a back flip, got stuck on the ceiling and haven't been down for a week exceptfor the Christmas Party. This record will stick! JOHN ERDAHL, WGIR
Eurythmics are this week's master blaster. "I Need A Man" is an able bodied rock and rollrecord. Gutsy vocals from Annie and infallible song writing from Dave bring this torchy tuneto life! ALISON STEWART, WBRU
Soul is the word. "I Need A Man" is mean, man. Top phones-what a buzz!MARK WILLIAMS, WW'ZU
I Need A Man too, but if all I get is this new Eurythmics Lp, I'm a happy camper. Daveand Annie are at the top of their game right now! STACY MELTON, WKQQ

THERD REPORT
U2, "In God's Country", Island.... Year end polls arebasically a formality in terms of at least two categories here, and"God's Country" is really little more than insurance points at thisstage. Ditto the seemingly endless tour. Ups at 24 (falling justshort of the Increase Index) are nothing to sneeze at (Get well,Andy) and the 12 adds translate into the 19-12* advance. 'YNF'sCharlie Logan ain't takin' any chances with the proclamation,"They are the latest greatest rock and roll band in the world"....
Elton John, "Like A Candle In The Wind", MCA....You knew it would take that single vehicle to ignite this albumfavorite, and indeed the magic is still there. New at KSHE, WIMZand DC 101 where Curt Gary augments the add to power with"We lit the 'Candle' from time to time around here, but theresponse has been unavoidable. Sounds great, especiallyduring the day. Obviously a great song can always comeback".... 81-69*....
Paul Carrack, "Don't Shed A Tear", Chrysalis....This is the week that was meant to be.... As this track's momen-tum pushed Paul into the Tough Ten 10-9*.... It might be theoverwhelming reception top 40 is heaping on "Tear", but we thinkthe phone action (top 5 at 11, top 10 at many more) is havingequal or better effect on overall airplay. The track ranks #3 onthe Increase Index this week with 27, with unusually long, stronghang time a key factor in this projects success to date....
Dokken, "Burning Like A Flame", Elektra.... Dokkenmaintains its grip on the Most Requested, actually picking up afew more top phones to hold at the #4 mark this week, as in-creased rotation at 11 does the trick, revving "Flame" 23-19* onthe chart. From WGIR's Metalman Mike Jones, "No surprise thatDokken hit #1 phones and airplay on my show this week. Theycan't keep the records on the shelf in the stores, with OTB salesa regular occurrence".... Now on 121....
Heart. "There's The Girl", Capitol.... "The Girl" againleaps ahead on the chart with a 20-17 climb after a week of in-creases at 15 (plus new air at 5) demonstrates the power ofHeart's gentle persuasion. Rotation is the key here, as clearlyhalf of the 116 on grace the girls with power or heavy air.... Withsuch strong support, still relatively early in the game, look foreasy top 10 by year's end. See ya....
Kane Gang, "Motortown". Capitol.... The Steely Danimages are right on the money for this upper demo mindsweeper, and we are finding more satisfied customers everyweek as "Motortown" is fitting right in as that mid -day tempowoman tamer in many markets. Already on WPYX (power),WCCC, WLIR, KBER, WRKI, WWTR, KZAM and 8 more as 'PLR'sChristina reports, "After power play for many weeks, we've hadgreat success with 'Motortown'"....
TAKE TWO --Second tracks worthy of your attention .
Northern Pikes, "Big Blue Sky", Virgin.... Hey, wethought these guys had a great showing LAST week.... Now theymore than double their play, landmg a 99* debut. 31 are nowon including KRQR, WRCN, WDHA, WRUF, WLIR, CHOM,KMOD, WGIR and WTPA, as the tide turns and many of thosewho did so well with "Money" are back for more. WRUF's JasonTyler couldn't wait any longer, "The first one did so well for us,it's easy to go with 'Big Blue Sky".... With playlists relaxing, watch for the Pikes to fill in nicely with this followup into the com-ing year....
Jethro Tull, "Farm on the Freeway", Chrysalis....The phones still be burning for "Farm" (20 top 5 requests), andChristmas retail is primed to blow the top off of this project. Forsome, this was the biggest week to date. F'rinstance WWZU'sMark Williams, "The biggest turnaround this week is Jethro Tull.Top phones on 'Farm' and top 10 retail on possibly the mostclassic addition to any playlist".... "Jump Start", meanwhile isbuilding quite nicely with 11 adds and 4 increases this week....As 'KQQ's Stacy Yelton says, "The third time is a charm".... 65-57*....
R.E.M., "It's the End of the World....", IRS.... Thisband's in the running for so many accolades on the Music andPersonality Poll, a "Nominated in the Most Categories" categorymight have to be created to accomodate them this year.... Stats-wise, 14 increases and 14 adds come through for the 27-20*jump on the chart, while phones are finally starting to make theswitch from the single to "World". New at KCAL, WLUP, WIOT,WDVE, KLAQ and DC 101, where Curt Gary confesses, "Wewaited until the Russians came to town to add this one!"....
INXS, "Devil Inside", Atlantic.... With the single andMichael Hutchence in the forefront in videoland and top 40, thetime is right to get serious about the next cut in the wings. 48are on, 8 new this week with phones already crossing over to"Devil" at 'KQQ and WRCN. That action translates to 63*. FromWBLM's Robin Mathieu, "INXS has the #1 retail album in themarket plus top 5 phones".... WRXL's Paul Shugrue adds, "INXSis a band that we discovered and we are uppin gour rotationbefore the CHR's take it away from us".... And this from DC 101'sCurt Gary, "Michael Hutchence is a star. The more visual ex-posure he gets the more radio interest there is"....
Christmas WrapA Very Special Christmas, Various Artists, A&M.... Radio couldn't be more receptive to lovine's holiday project withplay ranging from open album play to individual favorites. However you're dealing with it, you know this is one that'll be back onthe scene year after year. Open album play is leading the way, with 47 choosing that route. Cutwise, U2's "Christmas" slightly leadsJohn Cougar's "I Saw Mommy..." with 23 on, as the two tracks debut on the Hundred at 85 and 86 respectively. WLVQ's WendySteele, "What a tremendous project. Our hats off to everyone involved, and we're supporting it by playing all the rock and rolltracks".... David Allen Ross. KMJX, "This is a super collection of Christmas music; old classics redone by some of today's hotteststars".... And KDXR's Mark Zeiger, 'Thank you Jimmy lovine for a great rock and roll Christmas card. A package of this kind is longoverdue"....
Bob Rivers Comedy Corp, 'Twisted Christmas", Critique.... Quickly becoming a holiday favorite, in house and onthe air, Rivers and company have all but retired Bob and Doug's "Twelve Days" and "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.... 26concentrate on open album airplay, but "0 Come All Ye Grateful Dead -Heads", "The Twelve Pains of Christmas", and "We Wish YouWeren't Living With Us" are being targeted individually and one listen will convince you they're destined for Hall of Fame Christmasplay, Dr. Demento style. Open album play is strong enough to merit chart action, as the Lp debuts at 89* this week on the Hundred....

BETANCOURT BOWS OUT AT POLYGRAM
Big news out of the PolyGram organization has John Betancourtexiting after much conjecture. A terse press release made thelong rumored change official but what we find humorous is thecontinuing but unsubstantiated buzz that has John going toRCA. On the home front, David Leach has been promoted toSenior VP of Promotion. As such he will be responsible forpromotion at CHR, AOR, AC, Dance, Urban and Video. Davidjoined the company in 1977 after a stint at WBCN/Boston. Anannouncement from Executive VP Bob Jamieson informed usof the change, "David has established himself as one of theindustry's most influential and successful young promotion ex-ecutives." Most recently, David was National Director, PopPromotion for the label, a position he held since 1985.

THE RAMONES TAKE A STAND
When the Boston University Concert Committee asked for theRamones to hit campus for a show they figured, no problem, right? Well, the Student Activities Office surprised everyone byshooting down the proposal on the grounds of projectedaudience rowdiness and inappropriate behavior, extending todrug abuse. When the Civil Liberties Union took this to be an in-fringement of student rights an anti -censorship rally resultedwith over a thousand students taking part, the largest studentassembly in five years. Ramones, Marky and Joey showed upand things got really interesting with a trek across campusaimed at confrontation with the offending student officersresponsible for keeping them off the concert schedule. After alot of rhetoric and some serious backsliding by the intimidatedStudent Activities people, it looks like the Ramones will be wel-comed after all. Maybe next Spring.
THE RADIO RUMBLE
WLIR/Long Island is going to be transformed into WDRE, DARE92.7, with the first of the year. New studios are being built and asignal improvement is in the works also. Ronald J. Morey, CEOand President of Jarad Broadcasting, will be the station's GMand Denis McNamara is busy lining up staff. Denis told NOISE,"We are looking forward to serving not only the same audienceof loyal listeners but with the increased signal area coming as aresult of our power boost, we are also looking for growth. Thismeans WDRE will embrace New York City while remaining dedi-cated to preserving the 92.7 heritage." Meantime, the currentcrew at WLIR informs us of their intention to retain the stationcalls while they search for a new frequency in the area. LarryDunn has taken over for Denis as both PD and MD while he startsgetting things lined up for the station's new home. A spokesper-son for WLIR could not give us a workable time frame for the ac-quisition of their new frequency but Larry assures us that a newsignal will be announced in short order. Surprisingly, the staff isremaining pretty well settled, only three employees have jumpedto WDRE, during what has to be a tough time. For that Larry andthe management are to be complimented. With Larry and Denisgoing head to head you can count on a real new music war tohit the airwaves soon.

THEHARD REPORT INTERVIEW
guys at the label do this all the time, so we try to listen to theirinput and usually we agree with them. That's been a pretty easytransition.
JT.... How did the work with Robbie Robertson come to pass?
Beau.... Robbie is one of the first people I've ever met whosestar quality just naturally radiated from him. He called our recordcompany because he heard our stuff and thought we had somecharacter he could use on his album. We went into the studioand met Daniel Lanois and Robbie, they set up a mike right awayand thought it was great.
JT.... When the band got started you were pretty much free togrow without a whole lot of influences, to fashion your ownsound. Now that you're in the national spotlight everything youdo brings you into contact with other creative sources that mightdilute you're own image, how do you guard against that?
Beau.... Sam and I have always been watchers but we've alwaysmade our own decisions about the direction we want to take. We've never let other people have any say in what that directionis going to be. We've always made our choices that way andnow that we are on this big tour it's pretty much the same, wejust have more things to watch, that's all.
JT.... How was recording the second LP with Jerry Harrison dif-ferent from the first one with T -Bone Burnett?
Beau.... With the first album T -Bone was pretty much in control,we didn't have any idea of how to record. I don't know if anyband is ready to record their first album, but with T -Bone wewere pretty naive and he just said, "Do this, do that." For thesecond album we were looking around for producers and Jerrywas bold enough to come to us and say, "Let's just try some-thing." It was a time when we couldn't get some of the peoplewe wanted to work with, people like Bob Clearmountain justaren't within our reach. Well, working with Jerry we wanted toget something out of our system, I guess we wanted a bigger, tougher sound where we could be a lot stronger then our firstrecord. We wanted to get some of the energy of our live showson the record.
JT.... When you travel around the country do you spend anytime listening to radio and, if so, what do you hear?
Beau.... There are some stations that I really like, that reallycatch my attention. I'm a real fan of WXRT in Chicago, stationsthat just play the best music they can. I would like to see moreof that happen. It seems like a lot of these AOR stations arescared of oldies stations so they feel like they have to play ol-dies too instead of just playing the best music they can find. Lis-teners will always appreciate good music.
JT.... What about you guys, when you're not working what doyou like to listen to?
Beau.... Sammy and I are the songwriters in the band and we'vealways had a real wide taste in music. We don't really followstyles or artists so much as individual songs, a lot of people cancome up with a good song once in a while, coming up with a lotof good songs is tough for anyone. I like to listen to people likeBruce Springsteen, The Replacements, Prince, Screaming BlueMessiahs, Bryan Ferry, Hank Williams, even the Scorpions, there is just so much good music out there.
JT.... How do you grade the American Rock Revival as such. Isthis a genuine trend or an artificial marketing ploy?
Beau.... To a certain extent the bands being signed aren't real-ly ready for all this attention or sincere about what they're doing. We tried hard to avoid any pigeonholing like that. We're justtrying to make the best music we can without waving any ban-ners. The good, honest stuff will last a long time no matter whatthey call it.
JT.... What's next for the band? Have you guys planned the nextstage of your career any further than the U2 tour?
Beau.... We'll be singing with Robbie Robertson on SaturdayNight Live in January and, of course, we will continue to tour alot on our own in 88. We have a shot at some soundtrack workand perhaps an overseas tour as well. Live performances aresomething that we feel to be real special for us and we hopepeople will catch us when they get a chance.
The BoDeans are a band that many think represents the bestaspects of the American rock renaissance. These talentedyoung players are throwing a mighty big shadow against thebackdrop of a tireless rock and roll dream. With a voraciousappetite for touring and a wealth of songwriting talent be-tween Beau and Sammy Lianas, this tightly knit grouppromises great things for their growing host of fans. Fromfull blown rockers to fireside ballads, BoDeans music is realmusic, and the men that make it will go far.

71.41,EARD REPORT MUSIC NOW!An official Michigan historical marker has been placed at theoriginal studios and offices of Motown Records on West GrandBlvd. in Detroit. Last Tuesday was named Motown Day by thestate's governor, who took a tour of the museum. "When you're45 and grew up in Ferndale and went to Michigan State Univer-sity, you know the Detroit sound," Governor James Blanchardsaid. Blanchard, Smokey Robinson, and Esther Gordy Ed-wards, the sister of Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr., spoke atthe ceremony which also kicked off a drive to raise money fora full-fledged Motown Historical Museum. "Detroit was ourroots, most of our homes," Robinson said. "Even though mostof us don't live here anymore, it's still our home. I'd like to thinkthis music speaks for Detroit all over the world." Gordy wasn'tpresent at the event. His personal secretary said he was awayfrom Los Angeles on business. The Motown Historical Founda-tion has applied to the city for a $75,000 Neighborhood Oppor-tunity Grant to begin work on a new museum.
David Johansen says he's succeeding in making the transfor-mation to Buster Poindexter. "I walk down the street nowadaysand people say, 'There's Buster,'" he says. "I don't get peoplesaying 'There's David' much anymore. And I like it. This is real-ly what I want to do; it's enjoyable for me, not like a job." He sayshe decided to take a higher profile with his Poindexter per-sonality because of the changing times. "Every year you getolder, but the audience stays the same," he says. "The kids growup and move on; they don't want to go to rock shows anymore.I like to tell stories and jokes and stuff between songs. I wantedto do something where people understood what the hell I wastalking about." Johansen has already signed for an upcomingJonathan Demme film, and will play the part of the Ghost ofChristmas Past in "The Scrooge," planned for next year.
Dave Pegg has been pulling double duties on tour this year, playing bass for Jethro Tull and Fairport Convention as they goon the road together. "Even if Fairport weren't the supportband," Pegg says. "I'd still be at the venue with Tull from four inthe afternoon on. All it means is I miss out on my hour and a halfof table tennis every night because I have to soundcheck withFairport. It is a bit funny, though. I come off from Fairport's setchange, take 15 minutes to tune up again and go on with Tull. Ifeel like I've achieved quite a bit musically by the end of thenight." Pegg has been with Fairport since 1969, and when thegroup reunited in 1985, he liked what he saw. "I was delightedto find out that, as a unit, we got along again," Pegg says. "Itwas quite nice." Fairport's latest album is "In Real Time," a livealbum recorded at Cropredy Oxfordshire. Pegg hopes he cancontinue to work with both groups. "Luckily, I have sympathyfrom both bands, and usually we have enough advance noticeof when there's going to be activity with either one," he says. "Ihope I never have to make a choice. So far, knock wood, I'vebeen lucky enough that the schedules haven't crossed."
The Jesus & Mary Chain have issued a statement following thearrest of singer Jim Reid in Toronto on assault charges. Theband says the reports of the incident have been exaggerated. Two people at the show complained that Reid struck them witha mike stand during the show. Reid was released on $2,000 bailand is scheduled to appear in court in February. "Contrary tothese reports, no blood was spilt when two members of theaudience, were struck by microphone stand towards the endof the set," the band's statement says. "The injured parties hadbeen part of a small, unruly group in the audience continuallygoading the band. Jim Reid requested several times that theseindividuals be removed but the club security did not comply.Afterwards the 'victims' were seen to be laughing and jokingabout their 'injuries' but insisted on bringing charges and, withsome reluctance, the police arrested Jim. The incident was to-tally out of character with the rest of the tour."
Myles Goodwyn, formerly with April Wine, is putting the finish-ing touches on a solo album, which will be out next year.
Sammy Lianas and Kurt Neumann are working on material forthe third BoDeans album, though they don't know who will beplaying on the LP. They are touring with bass player Bob Grif-fin, keyboardist Susan Julian and drummer Bon Conlin who be-came a"temporary" member of the band earlier this year. "We'regoing to see how it works out," Lianas says of the new mem-bers. "So far, it's been good."
Copies of Timbuk 3's single "All I Want For Christmas (Is WorldPeace)" have been delivered to British Prime Minister MargaretThatcher. The copies were sent to her on the "International DayOf Protest Against War Toys." Proceeds from the record aregoing to the Stop War Toys Project. The band is currentlyrecording a new album, expected to be released in lateFebruary.
The Pogues' next album, produced by Steve Lillywhite, will becalled "If I Should Fall From Grace With God."
Corey Hart is recording several songs for his next album inMontserrat in the Caribbean. Hart's expected to take longer torecord this LP than the three weeks he took to record "Fields OfFire."
Frank Zappa will preview material from his new Honker HomeVideo label during a half-hour segment of USA Network's "NightFlight" on December 18.

HARD REPORT RADIO COMMENTSRon Garrett, KRXQ, SacramentoTo Roger Waters: I read as much of the Rolling Stone Pink Floydinterview as I could before becoming terribly bored. I saw, orbetter yet, I experienced Pink Floyd's show in Oakland alongwith thousands of other music lovers. I walked away feeling ex-cited like a child who's just been to Disneyland. Thousands ofpeople saw and enjoyed your shows as well. Your legal battlesand personal feuds with Pink Floyd of are little interest to the fanswho have given you a very successful career. Live and let live;entertain and let entertain. We all win this way. And quite frank-ly, Mr. Waters, music lovers deserve this.
Doug Clifton, KBCO, BoulderThanks to Geina Horton and Jeff Laufer for stopping by withDave Peg from Jethro Tull.... Everyone at KBCO wishes all ofyou a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Have a safeholiday and we'll see you in '88.
Dave Fortney, WKLT, Kalkaska1987 was the year of the veteran cosmic rocker. What a greatyear for comebacks and classic rockers reminding us they arestill here. '88 should be a good year for new artists since all theold ones put an album out in '87.... Thanks to all who helped methrough my first full year as Program Director. It was very educa-tional and extremely exciting. I'm looking forward to 1988. Seeyou all then, have a beautiful holiday.
John Bello, Roadracer, 212-219-0077We here at Roadracer would like to wish all of you a happy andhealthy holiday season. Thanks to all for your support this pastyear. Let's hope that 1988 will be bigger and better. Have aMEGA new year.
Stacy Yelton, WKQQ, LexingtonI need a man, too! But, if all I get is this new Eurythmics Lp, I'ma happy camper. I saw Eurythmics years ago, like before anyoneof us knew what a great guitarist Dave Stewartthat night and I'm so glad that guitar is now being heard on vinyl.Dave and Annie are at the top of their game right now.... Okay, when did I first mention Love & Rockets? Before RCA evendecided to work the record AOR as I recall. Well, now I have onebadgered PD and Double Q has the hottest thing this side of col-lege radio on the air.... I don't know what to say aboutForeigner's new album except get out of my office, I'm listeningto it again.... The "third time's a charm award" -- it's a tie! JethroTull and Grateful Dead.... I hate to talk about records we haven'tadded yet but are you glad the ghost of rock past has broughtthe Radiators? "Doctor Doctor" is the closest thing we'll everhave to an Allman Brothers/Little Feat dream band.
Mike Stewart, WIMZ, KnoxvilleI look for Elton John's "Candle In The Wind" to be one of the big-gest hits in recent memory.
Paul Marszalek, WMAD, MadisonWith the rush of giant releases finally waning, it's time to have alittle fun. Like a breath of fresh air come adds for the NorthernPikes, Sinead O'Connor and the Reivers.... Don't miss the A.C.Reed album on Alligator. "I'm In The Wrong Business" nearlyblew me out of my car the other day.... Eurythmics' "Savage"looks to be huge.... Thanks to the Rainmakers, the Insiders andHusker Du for putting on great live shows and making myweekend more than worthwhile.
Kelly Cruise, WEGR, MemphisTim heard the new Grateful Dead's "Throwing Stones" onanother radio station out of town and thought it sounded great. The birth of an add.... I'm finally hearing what others have inMichael Bolton's "Dock Of The Bay". Bolton's soulful "Joe Cock-er touch" on this one really grows on you.
Donna Geisinger, Passport, 818-500-7677I've been absent from these pages because I went home to At-lanta and then have been busy playing catch-up. But I'm back!I would like to thank Beth Kepple at WKLS for the tour and a
great lunch.... I also had wonderful meetings with Greg Gillispieat B/A/D/E and Larry Hensley and Dee Ferrick at thePolygram/Atlanta branch.... I want to wish everyone very happyholidays and say that 1987 has been a great year for me and theproduct I've worked.... Tom Caufield and Eastern Bloc will con-tinue to be priorities in 1988 and we look forward to shippingyou a host of other new and exciting records.... My wish for thenew year is to see radio expand its support of new artists andnot to lose any more stations to a change in format. That doesn'tseem like too much to ask for. I'm writing my letter to Santatoday, maybe he'll deliver this year. Happy Holidays!
Paul Brown, Virgin, 212-463-0980Market Research. Yeah, that's the ticket. There are a lot of thingsI can accept. I accept the nature of AOR rotations. I accept thedifficulties that we on the record side encounter in establishinga fledgling act. I accept the reluctance on the part of oh too manyprogrammers to go further out on a limb and add a second trackfrom Dianabol and the Steroids, and I even accept the bottomline mentality of owners and GM's who only want results and thesubsequent revenue but -- market research? Get a grip, guys.Let the public, in effect, decide what sort of records The Boss,Mojo Nixon, Michael Jackson and REM should compose, per-form, mix and master? You're right. Let's not stretch the public'simagination. Let's not allow records to come out that touchpeople on a visceral level, that make them want to dance andsing. Just a nice gushy flow of digestable pulp. Whatevergenerates those numbers, baby. Let's research, identify and ex-punge the creative gene that these gifted individuals possess. For those of you who favor this market research, go ahead andamass your statistics but don't send your findings to us at Vir-gin.... On a lighter note, get out your binoculars, there is a hugestar on the horizon and her name is Sinead O'Connor.... Andfrom the band that recently hit the mark (ironically) with "TheThings I Do For Money" comes the optimistic yet bittersweet fol-lowup "Big Blue Sky". The Northern Pikes lament about the lossof innocence. Never more timely, "Big Blue Sky".
Pamela Newman, Enigma, 213-640-6869So, let's talk about the spirit of rock and roll. What is it and wherecan it be found? It can still be found in crammed arenas acrossthe country and in lots of small clubs, particularly the ones whereyour feet stick to the floor. In New York City, it can sometimesbe found on street corners or on subway platforms. I've neverbeen to Gilley's but I've always imagined that would be a prettyrock 'n' roll sort of hang. Can the spirit of rock and roll be foundon the radio? Well, yea, sometimes, some stations, some cities.Sometimes it can be found for four hours in the morning andthen it disappears. The spirit of rock and roll has always beenthe spirit of adventure and change and excitement and alwaysheavy on emotion. It has always been about cutting loose, it hasexcitement and always heavy on emotion. It has always beenabout breaking down the boundaries and about sniffing outwhat's new and what's happening just around the corner. Andall those superstars you've been playing including (especiallyincluding) those that have been doing this for 20 years would bethe first to agree. Many of those musicians have built careers ofpushing back the limits. Anyone remember what the first U2album had sold at the end of its original run? I do, I sold it (andDon Dixon's "Romeo" has sold more than twice that, so far.) Butwhat about the people that tell you that you've abandoned thepassion and unpredictability of rock and roll for the "almightyadvertising buck"? Well, those people are really missing themark, aren't they? After all, none of us have been hired to losemoney! Any of these people ever hang out at a radio station aftera bad book? The real point being missed here is this: Who saidthat safe and predictable translates into big ratings. Is that whatthey teach at Harvard Business School? I don't think so. It takesconfidence to trust your gut and it takes brains to know how, when and where to use it. It's the oldest business adage in thebook; winning big often takes an element of risk. Many of thecountry's most financially successful radio stations are thecountry's most exciting stations. Think about it. It's time to lookto the future. In 1988, you can use your brains AND your heartand still win! Have a happy New Year.

TIARED REPORT
Dru Dawson, KBAT, OdessaI like the Eurythmics a lot. This one smokes.... The Michael Bol-ton is a great version of a real classic; the audience really likesit.... Another reactive record is the Aerosmith. These guys can'tmiss.... The Foreigner record is a monster; tried and true Foreig-ner that is guaranteed to work.... We had good luck with the firstSqueeze track, it was real catchy and the new one is a strongfollowup.... "Waning Moon" by Peter Himmelman sounds greaton CD and really mixes down with the rest of our current productvery well. Who said things are slowing down?
Jason Tyler, WRUF, GainesvilleBourgeois Tagg continues to haul in top five phones. This songhas shown great shelf life.... We went with "Heart Turned ToStone" as our next Foreigner track and it sounds great on theair.... The first Northern Pikes song did real well for us so herewe go with "Big Blue Sky".... The MSG is a killer tune, one of thetoughest tracks out there right now.... The Radiator's have beendoing good things so "Doctor Doctor is a natural for us.
RADIO COMMENTS
Al Scott, KZEL, EugeneThe Eurythmics kick butt. This is a great song for rock stations...."Lock And Key" should have been the first follow up for Rush, sowe are happy to add it this week, great stuff.... White Lion hasbig claws. This one is a PD fave so it goes right in.... Foreigneris typical but well targetted. This album will be around for sometime to come.... Tom Caufield is really impressive with his debutsong "Precious Town". It has that live feel and a great horn sec-tion that defies commonplace description.
Inessa York, KGON, PortlandFrankly, it took a couple of listens for the Rainmakers to getthrough to me, but the thing that really set it off was the StephenKing connection. I mean when the man uses your lyrics in hisbooks you know you're on your way to the top.... From theOregon perspective, the new Dead track is a year end treat fromone of the year's major moments on vinyl.... We are exposing
Foreigner to see what tracks work best. This album sounds pret-ty automatic with the audience.
Robin Mathieu, WBLM, LewistonFinally some new Christmas music. The U2 and the John CougarMellencamp seem to be the faves from A Very SpecialChristmas. Bob Rivers' Twisted Christmas is getting greatresponse, especially the "Chimney Song".... Thanks also toWarner Brothers for Yulesville, it will come in useful this time ofyear.... It's great to have a copy of Prince's "Lonely Christmas"for my own collection.... The Eurythmics get song of the week. What a vocal from Annie! The Stones comparison is inescapableand it should certainly help their chance at airplay.... INXS hasthe #1 retail album in the market and top five phones but Teslasurprised us all by nabbing #1 phones after only one week onthe air. Consider it for your night-time rock and roll animals.
Beaver Brown, KDJK, ModestoThe Connells' "Over There" is a song you should not pass up.It's too pleasing to the ear, so give it a listen.... All I can say iswow! Pink Floyd was amazing and getting to meet David Gil-mour made the night even more special.... Hats off to Foreigner,"Inside Information" is one hell of an album. I guess Mick produc-ing Van Halen and Lou getting to go solo really helped. Foreig-ner has returned to the sound of their first album. If I ever getdown on myself and think that life has dealt me a bad hand, Iknow what to think about that will bring me back to life.... RickAllen of Def Leppard is quite an inspiration. Hats off to you forcoming back the way you did.
John Loscalzo, WRCN, Long IslandWRCN is now Long Island's only all CD radio station. Listenershear the difference. If we don't get it on CD, we don't play it.

has done. Good stuff from Lennox/Stewart. This stuff belongson album radio.... Yes''Shoot High, Aim Low" has always beenone of my favorite tracks off of "Big Generator". This is anothergem of a cut, on an album full of gems".... From John Erdahl:For years, I thought Annie Lennox was a brand (a very expen-sive one at that) of china. But lo and behold, hen the new Euryth-mics came in featuring Annie singing her heart out on the new"I Need A Man", I did a backflip, got stuck on the ceiling andhaven't been down for a week except for a Christmas party. Thisrecord will stick.
Stephen Page, KOME, San JoseWhat a weekend for rock and roll! I went out of my mind andhad a great time with the Radiators on Friday night and PinkFloyd on Saturday night. The Radiators were in town for threenights with two live broadcasts. I made copies of both live broad-casts and every night the songs were different. These guys havea repertois that never ends.... Now to the main point, Pink Floydin town, four sold out shows at the Oakland Coliseum.Everybody has said everything that there is to say about thistour. Let me just say that Moses saw the burning bush, but I haveseen the machine.
Victor Lentini, Passport, 818-500-7677Thank you Hard Report for a neato-keeno year! Passportreceived the support of a super staff especially Dawn, Bill,Venetia and Amy. The Hard Report aided the launch of a newlabel, Paradox, featuring Tom Caufield and Eastern Bloc.... I'dalso like to thank some radio -superheroes, KOME, WBCN,WXRT, WDHA, WNEW and KZEL, for going out on a record thatdoesn't already "Have a Story." As usual, KTAO, KTCL, WHFS,WOXY and WGTU have regularly supported us, not to mentionJonathan L. Formerly of KEYX. Also thanks to WEQX, KJET,KZAM, KKCY, and WHTG for all knowing what works best. That'snot everybody but just off the top of my head. I'm sorry if I missedyou.... A special thumbs down to WFNX, mainly to Bruce Mc-Donald. For no support, no return phone calls, and just plainblowing our confirmed meeting off and not even acknowledgingthe fact. Best of luck on your ratings.... Newfriends include DianeTemecha, Peter Standish, Kent Zimmerman, Sheila, everybodyin New England; Mr. Byron, David Margulies, Craig Kostich,Todd Bisson, Alan Wolmark, Robyn Kravitz, Harvey Leeds, PaulYeskel, Beth Rosengard, Brian Long, Chris Watts, JohnSouchak, The Academy and My Dog.... Next year, new musicfrom the Wild Seeds, The Rippingtons, Angry Samoans, TheDroogs, Leslie West, The Matsui Family, Tom Caufield andEastern Bloc. But not Bob Pfeifer!... Happy Holidays To All.
Ed Trunk, Megaforce, 201-254-6533This has been a big week for Megaforce. First of all theANTHRAX Ep "I'm The Man" is blowing out the doors at retail. The big surprise has been radio! The censored version of "I'mThe Man" is the #1 most added metal and #1 most requested! We're now working on a video for "I'm The Man" which shouldincrease sales even further. The ANTHRAX tour is selling outeverywhere. This band is amazingly hot!... The first single fromthe PROPHET album will be for "Sound Of A Breaking Heart".This song is a mass appeal rock ballad that will surely set theairwaves on fire. The album, "Cycle Of The Moon", is full of greatrock tracks too. Look for a special advance CD single of "SoundOf A Breaking Heart" during the first week of January....OVERKILL'S "Fu*k You" Ep and M.O.D.'s "U.S.A. for M.O.D." aredoing great business as independent releases onMegaforce/Caroline. If you need a copy of either call our office....The FREHLEY'S COMET Ep has just been completed. It will betitled "Live + 1" and will feature live versions of "Rip It Out","Breakout" (including a great Anton Fig drum solo), "SomethingMoved" and "Rocket Ride" (the first ever live version of this KISSclassic). Our first emphasis cut will be the new studio track titled"Words Are Not Enough". This cut has more radio potential thananything on the last FREHLEY'S COMET Lp. Look for a midJanuary release.... Finally coming in February will be a very ex-citing debut from KINGS X. This Houston trio has produced oneof the most unique and exciting albums we've ever heard. The
album is titled "Out Of The Silent Planet", and combines ele-ments of the 60's, 70's and 80's to create a totally original sound.
Clarissa R. Garcia, Enigma, 213-640-6869Gail Flug, Crash Management, 212-245-7090Last Saturday, OBSESSION took their explosive live show toMingles (South Amboy, NJ) and boy did they cook! We gotnews this week that Mingles had burned down to a crisp. Detailsare sketchy but rumor has it that the stage was still smolderingafter they left. Get out your fire extinguishers because the guysin OBSESSION have only begun to do their damage. They'll beplaying with BATTLEZONE in January: 1/8 -Allentown, PA; 1/9 -Randolph, NJ (at Obsessions - how appropriate); 1/11 -Philadel-phia, PA; 1/16-Bayshore, NY. These cities are gonna burn. Gailsays that if she were Paul Di'Anno, she'd be scared. But I heardthat Paul had learned to walk on fire while he was in that otherband. If it's true, he should have nothing to worry about. Con-sider yourself warned. A fire department near you will have itshands full soon. When we said OBSESSION was hot, weweren't kiddin' ya!
John Schoenberger, Relativity Records,213-212-0974Do the boogie! The "Satch Boogie"! That's Joe Satriani's"SATCH BOOGIE". Stephanie and Charlie at KLOS do! Harry atKOZZ and Andy at KPOI are boogien' too! Upon hearing it --KZEL, KISS, KZYR, KSPN, KJJO and others knew! Of courseKNAC has always been true. You should do the boogie too orI'll send the silver surfer to get you!... From all of us at Relativity:Thanks for a great year and HAPPY HOLIDAYS to everyone....P.S. Nick Cucci: We love you and wish you happiness and suc-cess.
Penny Barnes, Rhino, 213-450-6323Well, once again it's the time of year where all kinds of greatChristmas product is available on vinyl, CD & cassette and thelibrary here at Rhino is no exception to that rule. Just some ofthe excellent releases this year, include Phil Spector's "AChristmas Gift To You" on CD, & "Cool Yule, A Collection OfRockin' Stocking Stuffers". Also, This year the Scrooge Brothers"Commercial Christmasland" & Dr. Demento's "Christmas" Lp.If you'd like to work on getting any of this product for your sta-tion, please feel free to call me and we'll help you stuff your stock-ings.... Cindy Lee Berryhill is picking up stations across thenation this week, sounding like a cross between Suzanne Vega, and Bob Dylan. These socio-politically oriented tunes breath abreath of fresh air into this Holiday Season. Put her on your turn-table today.... Snake Rock is continuing its chart progress thisweek and we picked up several new stations includingWOUR/Utica, KBOY/Medford, & WHMH. The progress on thiscompilation has been phenomenal. "Snake Rock", "Can't StayHome Tonite". Bluesy rock to put the boogie in your butt!...Some of our favorite new music out right now: Love & Rockets(Good Stuff Maynard) and Foreigner (Lou Graham, Unabashed-ly one of the primo vocalists of our time). If you're not on either, what are you waiting for? Two great ways to head into 1988....Thanks also to all the participants who got the Trivia Q6ques-tion right. The answer was (drum roll please) Bob Dylan's "It Ain'tMe Babe". We'll continue with the trivia questions after we getback from the holidays, when there will be more of you aroundto answer them & win the goods.... Have a superb week. Seeya!
