T he eight-day festival of Passover is celebrated in the early spring from the 15th

through the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nissan March 30-April 7 2018 Passover (Pesach) commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt Pesach is observed by avoiding leaven and highlighted by the Seder meals that include four cups of wine eating matzah and bitter herbs and retelling the story of the Exodus

I n Hebrew it is known as Pesach (which means ldquoto pass overrdquo) because G‑d passed over the Jewish homes when killing the

Egyptian firstborn on the very first Passover eve

The Story in a Nutshell

After many decades of slavery to the Egyptian pharaohs during which time the Israelites were subjected to backbreaking labor and unbearable horrors G‑d saw the

peoplersquos distress and sent Moses to Pharaoh with a message ldquoSend forth My people so that they may serve Merdquo But despite numerous warnings Pharaoh refused to heed G‑drsquos command G‑d then sent upon Egypt ten

devastating plagues afflicting them and destroying everything from their livestock to their crops

At the stroke of midnight of 15 Nissan in the year 2448 from creation (1313 BCE) G‑d visited the last of the ten plagues on the Egyptians killing all their firstborn While doing so G‑d spared the children of Israel ldquopassing overrdquo their homesmdashhence the name of the holiday Pharaohrsquos resistance was broken and he virtually chased his former slaves out of the land The Israelites left in such a hurry in fact that the bread they baked as provisions for the way did not have time to rise Six hundred thousand adult males plus many more women and children left Egypt on that day and began the trek to Mount Sinai and their birth as G‑drsquos chosen people

In ancient times the Passover observance included the sacrifice of the paschal lamb which was roasted and eaten at the Seder on the first night of the holiday This was the case until Temple in

Passover Observances

Passover is divided into two parts

The first two days and last two days (the latter commemorating the splitting of the Red Sea) are full-fledged holidays Holiday candles are lit at night and kiddush and sumptuous holiday meals are enjoyed on both nights and days We donrsquot go to work drive write or switch on or off electric devices We are permitted to cook and to carry outdoors (click here for the details)

The middle four days are called Chol Hamoed semi-festive ldquointermediate daysrdquo

when most forms of work are permitted

NO CHAMETZ

To commemorate the unleavened bread that the Israelites ate when they left Egypt we donrsquot eatmdashor even retain in our possessionmdashany chametz from midday of the day before Passover until the conclusion of the holiday Chametz means leavened grainmdashany food or drink that contains even a trace of wheat barley rye oats spelt or their derivatives and which wasnrsquot guarded from leavening or fermentation This includes bread cake cookies cereal pasta and most alcoholic beverages Moreover almost any processed food or drink can be assumed to be chametz unless certified otherwise

Ridding our homes of chametz is an intensive process It involves a full-out spring-cleaning search-and-destroy mission during the weeks before Passover and culminates with a ceremonial search for chametz on the night before Passover and then a burning of the chametz ceremony on the morning before the holiday Chametz that cannot be disposed of can be sold to a non-Jew (and bought back after the holiday)

MATZAH

Instead of chametz we eat matzahmdashflat unleavened bread It is a mitzvah to partake of matzah on the two Seder nights (see below for more on this) and during the rest of the holiday it is optional

THE SEDERS

The highlight of Passover is the Seder observed on each of the first two nights of the holiday The Seder is a fifteen-step family-oriented tradition and ritual-packed feast

The focal points of the Seder are

Eating matzah Eating bitter herbsmdashto commemorate the bitter slavery endured by the Israelites

Drinking four cups of wine or grape juicemdasha royal drink to celebrate our newfound freedom

The recitation of the Haggadah a liturgy that describes in detail the story of the Exodus from Egypt The Haggadah is the fulfillment of the biblical obligation to recount to our children the story of the Exodus on the night of Passover It begins with a child asking the traditional ldquoFour Questionsrdquo

A Passover Message Passover celebrating the greatest series of miracles ever experienced in history is a time to reach above nature to the miraculous But how are miracles achieved Letrsquos take our cue from the matzah Flat and unflavored it

embodies humility Through ridding ourselves of inflated egos we are able to tap into the miraculous well of divine energy we all have within our souls

Additional Prohibited Foods in Ashkenazi Communities - Kitniyot

While the forbidden foods on Pesach are relevant to all Jews regardless of cultural community the Ashkenazim further forbid many vegetables and foods which could be considered grains or used to make breads and cakes because they have the ability to ferment and become yeasty The additional prohibited foods are called kitniyot which are legumes including beans rice corn lentils dried beans and several vegetables NOTE According to the Orthodox Union other foods considered kitniyot include

bull Buckwheat Kasha and Millet

bull Peas and Green Beans

bull Snow Peas and Sugar-Snap Peas

bull Soybeans and Chickpeas

bull Sunflower Seeds and Poppy Seeds

It is forbidden to eat kityinot in Ashkenazi communities although they may remain in onersquos possession and can be used for other purposes An extensive list of kityinot has been compiled on Kashrutcom in consultation with several rabbinic and Kashrut authorities While the Ashkenazim have adopted these additional food prohibitions Sephardic communities did not implement the same rules Many Sephardim will eat rice and all vegetables are allowed When determining what is allowed and not allowed during Pesach it is best to follow the customs and traditions of the Jewish community or consult Rabbinic and Kashrut authorities

Ashkenazic Descendants of Jews from France Germany and Eastern Europe Sephardic Descendants of Jews from Spain Portugal North Africa and the Middle East Mizrachi Descendants of Jews from North Africa and the Middle East Other subgroups are Yemenite Ethiopian and Oriental

While most Jews celebrate Passover their customs and traditions vary somewhat Sephardic Jews may eat rice corn peanuts and beans during this holiday while Ashkenazic Jews avoid them Jews everywhere regardless of additional traditions and culture are forbidden from eating anything from the four species ndash wheat barley oat spelt and rye This includes all bread and any leavened food products rising agents such as baking powder and yeast and beer or other alcohol products made with yeast

A Synopsis of the Passover Torah Reading

On the FIRST DAY OF PASSOVER we read from the book of Exodus (1221-51) of the bringing of the Passover Offering in Egypt the Plague of the Firstborn at the stroke of midnight and how On this very day G-d took the Children of Israel out of Egypt The reading for the SECOND DAY OF PASSOVER Leviticus 2226-2344 includes a list of the moadim -- the appointed times on the Jewish calendar for festive celebration of our bond with G-d the mitzvah to Count the Omer (the 49-day countdown to the festival of Shavuot which begins on the 2nd night of Passover) and the obligation to journey to the Holy Temple to to see and be seen before the avoiding leaven and eating matzah on Passover telling ones children the story of the Exodus and donning tefillin (Exodus 131-16) 2) A portion from the Parshah

of Mishpatim which includes the laws of the festivals (Exodus 2224-2319) 3) A section describing Moses receiving of the Second Tablets and G-ds revelation to

him of His Thirteen Attributes of Mercy which likewise concludes with the laws of the festivals (Exodus 341-26) when one of the intermediate days of Passover is Shabbat this is the reading read on that day and it begins 12 verses earlier

with 3312) 4) The story amp laws of the Second Passover (Numbers 91-14) On the SEVENTH DAY OF PASSOVER we read how on this day the sea split for the Children of Israel and drowned the pursuing Egyptians and the Song at the Sea sung by the people upon their deliverance (Exodus 1317-1526 full summary with commentary here) On the EIGHTH DAY OF PASSOVER we read Deuteronomy 1519-1617 Like the reading for the second day it catalogs the annual cycle of festivals their special observances and the offerings brought on these occasions to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem The Eighth Days special connection with the Future Redemption is reflected in the Haftorah (reading from the Prophets) for this day (Isaiah 1032-126)


PASSOVER IN A NUTSHELL hellip

Pesach Obligation for Women

Although women are obligated to observe all negative commandments of the Torah they are exempt from those positive commandments that must be performed at a particular time

[see Kiddushin 29a] However eating matzah on the night of the fifteenth of Nissan which is a time-bound mitzvah is an exception to the rule The Gemara (Pesachim 43b) derives this from a juxtaposition of the negative commandment against eating leavened bread and the positive commandment to eat matzah in one verse (Deuteronomy 163) You shall not eat leavened bread with it [ie the pesach offering] for seven days you shall eat matzos because of it The juxtaposition implies that anyone who is obligated to refrain from eating leavened bread is also obligated to eat matzah Since women must observe all the negative commandments they are obligated to eat matzah (Rashi)

Guess where we ate after the first two holidays of Passover at a KOSHER FOR PESACH McDonalds This felt s-o-o wrong on so many levels hellip

This Kosher for Pesach ice cream parlour was our favourite stop during the week All the flavours you could ask for and more Just try to find a table

There was street entertainment every day on the square Everything from young boys choirs to eclectic street performers and flash mobs and vendors

Mostly all of the museums and government run attractions are free all week in Jerusalem So families take advantage

ldquoI knew I had Irish relatives in Israel

Oh darn its closed for Pesachrdquo

On Thursday we caught a bus into Beit Shemesh to visit family amp friends

Bernie and I were invited to his third cousin Mimis house for a wonderful dinner Bernie had never met Mimi before but they have heard so much about each other growing up It was such a thrill to finally meet her and her beautiful family

Like Mimi explained whenever an Estrin travels we go through the phone book and look for other Estrins ask them who their father and zaidas are and chances are you will be related Thats just the way the Estrins roll Thanks Mimi for a wonderful evening great to meet your family (Finally)

We were so very honoured to be invited to Shlomo amp Ayala Finkelshteyns house also in Beit Shemesh They are formerly from Edmonton and have now been living in Bet Shemesh for 3 years They have seven daughters and now finally a son

We spent the afternoon with them and visited with their adorable little girls Ayala treated us to a a lovely seudah which we all enjoyed in their beautiful home

SUNDAY - APRIL 16th to April 22 2017

On Saturday night we hooked up with Bernies 1st cousin Tamara who lives in Israel with her family She lives just outside of Jerusalem and drove in especially to see us after Shabbat It was so great to see her and catch up

We just keep meeting Rabbi Yossi Biston by chance everywhere (three times now)This time we spotted him when we were having a hot chocolate with Tamara Thought we really should get a picture this time

SUNDAY is the Sixth day of Pesach and NOT a holiday so time for MORE adventures

This morning we caught the bus from the Central bus station to visit a friend of Barry amp Sandra Greenspans who lives on Kibbutz Gezer

The bus ride was spectacular and we saw another part of the landscape around Jerusalem that we had never seen before We travelled up and down a small two-lane highway passing little villages ruins a monastary and towns We even drove up an escarpment much like around Collingwood Ontario and got off up at the bottom where Emmanuel picked us up

Emmanuel and his lovely wife Yokki welcomed us into their home on Kibbutz Gezer where they have lived for thirty years

They gave us a guided tour by foot of the entire kibbutz One of the highlights was the dairy Each cow has a brace-let that has a chip where they can ID the cow measure its milk output how much cream etc This dairy is extremely advanced and completely computerized

We saw many beautiful gardens a huge sculpture park baseball field and massive swimming pool We also saw the childrens daycare after school care general store activities centre and met many of the kibbutznics

We were over-whelmed by the gardens where plants flowers and herbs of almost every kind grew wild and in the many many gardens They even had a massive cactus garden around the back of the old dining hall

After a short rest and lunch Emmanuel took us on an amazing driving tour to the city of Ramla Our friend Sandra Greenspan who is a very close friend of Emmanuel and Yokki told us that Ramla has the best markets to barter She unearthed some incredible ldquofindsrdquo

Ramla has a very special place called The Seven Arches an underground water reservoir with pillars holding it up and you can actually go boating under ground

It was closed the day we were there hellip so that means only one thing hellip we have to go back

We continued our drive and saw some Arab villages one in particular where Arab and Jews live side-by-side called Wahat Al-Salam at the top of a beautiful lookout

We also drove by the newly constructed not-yet-open massive hi-speed train line to Jerusalem that will open at the end of 2017

At the end of day after seeing the many incredible vistas of the foothills around Jerusalem Emmanuel drove us back to our hotel in Jerusalem after a really fun time We were so-o tired

Thanks for an Amazing Day Yokki amp Emmanuel

On Monday the last day of Passover Bernie went to the Jerusalem Great Synagogue again and who did he meet Cyril Frieds best friend when growing up in South Africa He just happens to be The Director of the famous synagogue choir

And so ended our ldquoPassover in Israelrdquo

The procedure for lighting candles on the eve of the holidays is

basically the same as the Shabbat candle lighting except for the

following details and blessings (which differ from one festival to

another)

bull It is permissible to kindle the holiday candles after sundown (except

when occurring on the Shabbat) however lighting the candles has to

be from a pre-existing flame

bull When lighting on a Friday light before sunset

bull When lighting on a Saturday evening the earliest one may light is an

hour after sunset

Sephardic Passover Custom

Sephardic Jews usually light seven candles on the eve of each Passover Seder and this is traditionally done by the lady of the household The reason for seven candles is rooted in Kabbalistic opinions According to the Kabbalah the Passover Seder night radiates an extremely powerful light - in a spiritual sense
