Notes from Madeline… September 2020
WOW! Can you believe the summer is rapidly passing by. September 22nd is the last day of summer. Let’s keep
enjoying the warmer days outdoors as much as possible and try to meet up with friends and family.
I hope you had the opportunity to view the Art Slide Show on Facebook page “The Keyport Senior Center”. The slide show received 140 views and 3 viewers shared with many others. You will still be able to view it. I have a couple of
times. Each time you see something new.
You should have all received your food vouchers by now. There are still vouchers available you can call:
732-308-3770 (X6656) to see if you are eligible.
Many are borrowing the Grandpads and enjoying tremendously. You are allowed to borrow for one full week. I
have received lots of positive feedback. Please call Center to borrow one.
“NEW” Virtual Chair Yoga on Tuesday at 1:00PM will be available. Same link, and same ID and password. The first class will be September 8th. This is National Yoga Month, dedicated to educate the health benefits of Yoga and in-
spire a healthy lifestyle. Try it out!
Keyport Library now has available digital Asbury Park Press subscription. Anyone with a library card can
access it for free.
In addition, the Library will do an event with John Schneider on September 10th from 10:00AM to 2:00PM in front of the Library. He will read from his book, sing a few songs, have a raffle, sell/sign books. This will be fun outdoor event.
So if you are a fan of local history come and enjoy the day. See page 3 for details.
If you would like to try Virtual Grandfriends please call the Center and it will be arranged with Keyport Central School. Last year we started at the end of the school year therefore, it ended rather quickly. The kinks are ironed out, so
let us know and we will be happy to set you up.
Flu shots and pneumonia shots will be available October 6 & 7. See page 9 for details. Call the Center at 732-
264-4916 to set up an appointment. You need an appointment so we can keep everyone safe.
Working on a couple of changes at the Center I think you will be pleased upon your return. I do not have a date
as of today, “patience is a virtue”.

Writer’s Corner
Susan Pike Most of the calls or emails I got during the quarantine wanted to know what I was reading. People that know me thought I would be in my element finally having the time to go through my endless “to-be-read’ piles of books. But I couldn’t read! I couldn’t concentrate. I’d pick up a novel or biography, read a few pages and put it down. Poetry helped a little but I was still unsettled. Finally, around April I found the answer – cookbooks. In the beginning of the pandemic my husband and I decided to only shop every two weeks. This upset my whole routine. Usually I would check the supermarket circular and plan my menus from what was on sale. This no longer worked. Supply chain is-sues meant that items on my list weren’t available so I would buy what I could and figure out what to make from what I had. The next thing I knew I had pulled out some of my favorite cookbooks. You know the ones: they open automatically to the best macaroni and cheese recipe; they have gravy stains and the spine is held together by elastic bands. From there I just kept going. These books were fun to read. (Don’t tell me that I can find any recipe on the Internet. I know. I have several Pinterest boards of soups, cakes, etc. Finding a list of ingredients and directions is not as comforting as reading about “Ladies Lunch “at the Frances Virginia Tea Room in Atlanta, Georgia or Edna Lewis explaining how to make biscuits. Looking for something else to make with ground beef I found a recipe for Salisbury Steak. The food described seemed nothing like the meat in the TV dinners of my childhood. It is now a new favorite in my house. As the stay at home order dragged on, I moved on to my mother and mother-n-laws’ cookbooks. Their notes on substitutions or additions made me smile and remember summers of jelly roll cakes wrapped in dish towels sprinkled with confectioners’ sugar or the time I had David’s grandmother’s German potato salad for the first time. Also on this trip down memory lane are fundraiser cookbooks – those spiral bound compilations of recipes submitted by members of the church, Woman’s Club or historical society. These books are a look at the time they were printed. Lots of jello salads and condensed soup casseroles. Most of these recipes don’t fit with our low salt diet but one night I made “Eleanor’s One Dish Meal” and my husband surprised me by telling me about the time he had this at his friend Charlie’s house. Sure enough. Eleanor was Charlie’s mom. As restrictions have begun to lift here in New Jersey, I hope people have figured out ways to cope with being apart. I know that cookbooks aren’t the solution for those who are worried about putting food on the table. I understand. I work at a food pantry. I will let Laurie Colwin, one of my favorite food writers explain why cookbooks have helped me. “Cookbooks hit you where you live. You want comfort; you want security; you want food; you want not to be hungry; and not only do you want those basic things fixed, you want it done in a really nice, gentle way that makes you feel loved. That’s a big desire. And cookbooks say to the person reading them. ‘If you will read me, you will be able to do this for yourself and others. You will make everyone feel better’.” * *Colwin, Laurie. More Home Cooking. Harper Collins Publishers, 1993.
