President’s Message Parade of Garage Sales

Just a reminder that our Parade of Garage Sales is Sunday June 4th this year – see more information in this Hawk Eye. Also, please do not put any signs of any kind (garage sale, business or realtor) in our flower pots. And if you do put out any kind of signs – on the boulevards or on the mailboxes – please remove it as soon as your event is done.

Community Clean-up

Once again, we will be holding our FREE Community Clean-up Day on Saturday June 10th at the Hawkwood School parking lot from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., sharp. Between these hours, you can bring oversized black bin material, organic material (i.e. spring yard waste), blue bin material, electronics, metal and gently used items that Goodwill could re-sell. You CANNOT bring large CRT TV’s or paints/chemicals/oil/hazardous waste (please take that to Spyhill Landfill or Fire Station #17 on 32 Ave. NW). Also, we would greatly appreciate it if you purchased an HCA membership for $30 prior to dropping off your materials – it would certainly help us!

Community Garden

The Hawkwood Community Garden is taking shape, with many volunteers pitching in to help build and fill the decorative garden beds as well as the composting bins and the shed. The rain garden will continue to be fenced off until the plants and sod take. I want to thank the brave souls that took on the challenge of this undertaking this spring and I think this will be a really solid addition to our community and foster a sense of pride for both young & old. We will be having some training later in June and a grand opening in July, so keep an eye out in the Hawk Eye and our website (www.HawkwoodCA.com) about details. Many thanks to the Garden Committee for putting in a huge effort in our first growing season!

Councillor ReportCrowchild Trail is an important

skeletal roadway in Calgary's Transportation network, with over 100,000 vehicles per day crossing the Bow River. It not only plays an important role in the movement of goods and services throughout Calgary, but also is a primary roadway for commuters in Ward 2. That is why I was pleased to support a plan to significantly upgrade Crowchild Trail.

The short term improvements to Crowchild Trail which were approved by City Council on April 24, 2017 focus on upgrading the Crowchild Trail bridge over the Bow River. The existing Crowchild Trail bridge requires a major lifecycle rehabilitation, therefore it makes economic sense to upgrade this bridge while it is being rehabilitated. Upgrades include building an additional lane in both directions. This will be accomplished by widening the bridge across the Bow River, widening the bridge across Memorial Drive and ramp reconfiguration. Once complete, Crowchild Trail will have 3 through lanes in each direction over the Bow River which will help reduce congestion on this major roadway. Longer-term plans for Crowchild Trail include building an interchange at 24th Avenue NW, 16th Avenue NW, 5th Avenue NW and Kensington Road NW. This will eliminate all traffic lights on Crowchild Trail and allow for free flow traffic between Stoney Trail and Glenmore Trail. More information on the upgrades to Crowchild Trail can be found online at Calgary.ca/crowchild.

The City of Calgary’s Youth Employment Centre (YEC) offers resources to help youth, aged 15-24, secure employment and take the first step in their career. YEC offers a variety of services FREE of charge including employment counseling, career planning, resume assistance and more. For more info see youthemploymentcentre.ca.

In Our CommunityTransportation UpdatesThere are changes to activities being spearheaded by

Councilor Magliocca in Hawkwood:• the pedestrian crossing at the bottom of the hill on

Hawkwood Blvd unfortunately does not meet city criteria for the requested install of a Rapid Flashing Beacon. This crossing has been upgraded with high-visibility yellow reflectors. However the crosswalk in front of St Maria Goretti does qualify for a Beacon similar to the one installed in front of Hawkwood Elementary.

• with the arrival of spring, a speed study has been requested for Hawkwood Road to assess resident concerns.

These activities highlight the importance of adhering to speed limits, and watching for crossing pedestrians. This is essential to keep our neighbors safe. With the arrival of spring, homeowners can also help by trimming tree branches that have overgrown sidewalks and interfere with pedestrians. Problem spots can be addressed with a call to 311.

The city is revising the Temporary Sign Bylaw to reduce the excessive commercial signage on public roads. A survey released by the city indicates broad public support for signs that raise awareness of beneficial community-related events. However residents feel the opposite for commercial signs, indicating these are distracting, unsafe and unattractive. Some residents purposefully avoid businesses that advertise this way. This is an effective way to discourage commercial signs, and to be protected from questionable operators. Many signs are illegal and exploit loopholes in the temporary sign bylaw. When a business shows no concern for bylaws or community appearance, this naturally raises concern about how they treat customers.

The new proposed Temporary Sign Bylaw will be released mid-May. If proposed revisions appear insufficient to address this issue, concerned residents should contact Councilor Magliocca (403-268-3280, [email protected]). This feedback will help insure an effective new bylaw is implemented.

The quarterly meeting of the Airport Community Consultative Committee (ACCC) was held in late April. The Hawkwood representative asked if Nav Canada could review options to spread out air traffic, which had been concentrated over east Hawkwood when GPS navigation was introduced in 2014. This can result in high-frequency, low-level flights, and excessive

disturbance to some residents beneath this flight path. This is likely to increase as the airport expands. Nav Canada is conducting a similar study in Toronto where similar impact occurred when GPS was introduced in 2012. The Calgary Airport Authority (YYC) is committed to being a good neighbor, and encourages feedback from residents feeling impacts, as this is a key tool in identifying which issues require attention. Feedback can be provided in several ways:• Dedicated e-mail - [email protected]• Website Aircraft Concern submission form - yyc.com/

aircraftconcerns• Near-real time light tracking system - PublicVue• YYC aircraft concerns hotline - 403.735.1408

Keep Out Grocery Store Compost With the Commercial Compost Program coming into

effect, a City Councillor asked how does the City plan to keep all of the compost from groceries stores out of the landfills?

The Mayor said that he had conversations this week regarding formalized programs for the use of food waste from supermarkets by non-profit agencies. He added that discussions with the Calgary Food Bank and The Alex Community Health Centre could have insight on diversion to non-profits. The City’s requirement for composting is a good excuse to further explore this option.

The General Manager, Utilities and Environmental Protection, reported that the bylaw for commercial diversion comes into effect in November 2017. At that time, all commercial institutional businesses will need to source, separate, and divert their organics from the landfill. By about a year after that, those materials will be banned from the landfill entirely. The City will offer a comprehensive educational program to help businesses understand what their opportunities are and how they can go about diverting their organic waste.

The General Manager says that the industry players are ready to be good corporate citizens. There will be a period of education and awareness required when the bylaw comes into effect in November. He is optimistic that the commercial sector will follow the lead of multi-family and single-family residential sectors, in understanding the benefits of diverting organic waste.

Hawkwood/Citadel 214 Scouts NewsSummer is almost upon us, school is almost finished –

there are lots of happy times to look forward to!

Our activities have slowed down for the summer since our regular meetings are finished but, as usual, we will find some fun things to do using the new skills we learned this year. On Hospital night, the Beavers made a beautiful poster with words of encouragement for the patients at the Children’s Hospital. The Cubs had two very interesting and educational nights learning how to tie different kinds of knots. Thank you Scouter Matt and Rayne for building that fascinating contraption to practise knots on. Link Camp at Camp Horizon was fantastic as usual. This camp is especially exciting for those Beavers and Cubs who are transitioning (linking) into their new sections. The Scouts had a Scout Truck rally where they raced semi-trucks that they built and decorated themselves. The Scouts are still busy fundraising and preparing for CJ17 that takes place in July.

The Scouts, Vents, and Rovers participated in a highway cleanup project – thanks for your act of service and keeping our province clean!

Start saving those bottles and cans – our next bottle drive is on September 16.

Happy Fathers Day to all the dads out there, especially all the dads that volunteer so much time to the Scouting program.

Danielle Kiss, Cub Leader

Who Cleans UpAs there has been some information in the media,

a City Councillor asked staff to please clarify the City’s role in cleaning sidewalks. The General Manager of Transportation said that the City (meaning the Roads Department and Parks Department) does clean a limited number of sidewalks and pathways across the entire City, for example some regional pathways. He added that the vast majority of the City sidewalks are cleaned by nearby private homeowners or businesses.

We are Putting in a New Playground in Hawkwood! The city have given us permission to replace the small tot lot on Hawk Mount Circle this year. We are very excited to have another new playground for our community. We will not be changing or expanding this one. Just putting in some brand new equipment. We are looking to do the installation for this one the end of June or early July. We are of course looking for volunteers to install the playground on the day and would love input as we move this project forward especially from neighbour’s in the close itself. I have talked to many of you but pass the word around and send me your email address letting me know your support and I will add you to the mail list updating you of the dates for install and what you can do to help! Look forward to seeing you all!

In Our CommunityHawkwood Community GardenThank you to all of our volunteers who came and

help build the remainder of our garden boxes! Amazingly, we were able to fill all of the boxes with soil in only 1 day thanks to the great community turn out. A special thanks to Robert Thirsk High School who sent their Outdoor Living program students to help build beds and move dirt. We also want to make an honourable mention to Jerry Christensen who was such an extraordinary volunteer and Rebecca O’Niel who helped us with the design plan of the garden beds.

Thank you to all of our gardeners! Beds have now been assigned and things are beginning to grow. We remind all community members that the plants within belong to the renters and are not for public consumption. We are almost at capacity for our bed rentals. For inquiry please contact the Garden Team at [email protected] or check out our page at Hawkwoodca.com

Our next major build will probably happen next Spring when the team will organize the building of a pergola, picnic tables and a community perimeter bed which will be used to plant members perennial flowers. Stay tuned to get involved.

Happy Growing!

Hawkwood Community Outdoor SoccerThank-you for the continued support of our major

sponsor Crowfoot Vision Centre! 403-241-3000

I also want to thank the Calgary Blizzard Soccer Club for running our coaches clinics.

A big thank you to all of the volunteers who stepped up and allowed us to fill almost all of the coaching roles by the time the season kicked off on April 24th. The first week was a little dicey with the weather but we have been fine ever since.

This is the time of year that I really get to enjoy the fruits that this program produces for our community. It fills my heart with joy to see all of our neighbours and their kids hanging out and interacting with one another. It really is a great way to get to know the members of our community. If you don’t have kids in the soccer program, come on out anyway on a Monday or Wednesday night and meet some of your neighbors.

The wrap-up party is scheduled for June 24th. Planning is well under way for this event. I would like to thank Christie Leach for volunteering to coordinate the event this year. Looks like we already have bunch of great activities and food being prepared by the Calgary Stampede. Great Job Christie! Again, come on out on the 24th, even if your kids were not in the program this year. It should be a fun day and hopefully the weather cooperates.

As I stated in a previous article the age dynamics continue to change here in Hawkwood, our league grows smaller and smaller every season. As it is a community run program and strictly run with parent volunteers, I am very thankful for each and every one of you that steps up year after year to help out where necessary to keep our program from being moved elsewhere.

For those of you new to our Community or just new to Hawkwood Soccer, welcome! I hope you will all continue to support this program that our kids love so much.

See you on the fields!
