Luke 15:11-24 (NKJV)
I. THE DOWNWARD STEPS OF WOUNDEDNESS
1. I have become self-willed.
Verse 12 – “Give me the portion of goods that falls to me.”
Psalm 32:9 (NKJV) 9 Do not be like the horse or like the mule, which have no understanding, which must be
harnessed with bit and bridle, else they will not come near you.
Psalm 32:11 (NLT) 11 So rejoice in the LORD and be glad, all you who obey him! Shout for joy, all you whose
hearts are pure!
2. I operate from a position of selfishness.
Verse 13: “the younger son gathered all together.”
Romans 8:5 (NLT)
Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who
are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.
3. I want to separate myself.
Verse 13 – “journeyed to a far country.”
John 15:4-8 (NLT)
Proverbs 18:1 (NLT) Unfriendly people care only about themselves; they lash out at common sense.
Roman 8:35 (NLT) 35 Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer
loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute,
or in danger, or threatened with death?
II Timothy 3:1-2 (NLT) You should know this, Timothy that in the last days there will be very difficult times. 2 For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred.

Matthew 15:8 (NLT) These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
4. I have become sense-ruled by my inferior nature.
Verse 13 – “He wasted his possessions with wasteful living.”
Romans 2:8 (NLT) But he will pour out his anger and wrath on those who live for themselves, who refuse to obey the truth and instead live lives of wickedness.
James 3:14-16 (NLT)
5. I am spiritually destitute.
Verse 14 – “Famine arose…he began to be in want.”
Matthew 13:58 (NLT) 58 And so he did only a few miracles there because of their unbelief.
Revelation 3:17 (NLT) You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t
realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.
Luke 12:20-21 (NLT) 20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’ 21 “Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.”
Proverbs 10:21 (NLT)
The words of the godly encourage many, but fools are destroyed by their lack of
common sense.
6. I begin to self-abase.
Verse 15 – “…he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country.”
1 Corinthians 15:33 (ESV) 33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”
Proverbs 16:28 (ESV)
A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends.
I John 4:1 (ESV)
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are
from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

7. I am experiencing starvation.
Verse 16 – “and no one gave him anything to eat.”
Luke 11:26 (NLT) 26 Then the spirit finds seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they all enter
the person and live there. And so that person is worse off than before.
II Timothy 3:13 (NLT) 13 But evil people and impostors will flourish. They will deceive others and will
themselves be deceived.
II Peter 2:20 (NLT) 20 And when people escape from the wickedness of the world by knowing our
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and then get tangled up and enslaved by sin again,
they are worse off than before.
II. THE UPWARD CLIMB TO RESTORATION
1. Realization
Verse 17 – “But when he came to himself.”
Proverbs 12:5 (NLT) 5 The thoughts of the righteous are right, but the counsels of the wicked are
deceitful.
II Corinthians 10:5 (NKJV) 5 Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the
knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of
Christ…
2. Resolution
Verse 18 – “I will arise and go to my father.”
Matthew 26:74 (NLT) 74 Peter swore, “A curse on me if I’m lying—I don’t know the man!” And
immediately the rooster crowed.
Acts 5:15 (NLT) 15 As a result of the apostles’ work, sick people were brought out into the streets
on beds and mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall across some of them as he
went by.

John 4:17-18 (NLT) 17 “I don’t have a husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said, “You’re right! You don’t have a husband— 18 for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now. You certainly spoke the truth!”
John 4:29 (NLT) 29 “Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?”
Acts 9:1 (NLT)
Meanwhile, Saul was uttering threats with every breath and was eager to kill
the Lord’s followers. So he went to the high priest.
Acts 21:13 (NLT) 13 But he said, “Why all this weeping? You are breaking my heart! I am ready
not only to be jailed at Jerusalem but even to die for the sake of the Lord Jesus.”
Acts 16:24 (NLT) 24 So the jailer put them into the inner dungeon and clamped their feet in the
stocks.
Acts 16:33 (NLT) 33 Even at that hour of the night, the jailer cared for them and washed their
wounds. Then he and everyone in his household were immediately baptized.
3. Repentance
Verse 19 – “I am no longer worthy to be called your son.”
II Chronicles 7:14 (NLT) 14 Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and
pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven
and will forgive their sins and restore their land.
II Kings 5:1 (NLT)
The king of Aram had great admiration for Naaman, the commander of his
army, because through him the LORD had given Aram great victories. But though
Naaman was a mighty warrior, he suffered from leprosy.
4. Return
Verse 20 – “…he arose and came to his father.”
I Peter 2:25 (NLT)
Once you were like sheep who wandered away. But now you have turned to
your Shepherd, the Guardian of your souls.

Isaiah 55:7 (NLT)
Let the wicked change their ways and banish the very thought of doing wrong.
Let them turn to the LORD that he may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our
God, for he will forgive generously.
5. Reconciliation
Verse 20 – “when he was still a way off, his father saw him and had compassion and ran
and fell on his neck and kissed him.”
II Corinthians 5:18 (NLT) 18 And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through
Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him.
Ephesians 2:16 (NLT) 16 Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his
death on the cross, and our hostility toward each other was put to death.
Colossians 1:20 (NLT) And through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with
everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.
Hebrews 2:17 (NLT) 17 Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his
brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest
before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the
people.
6. Re-Clothing
Verse 22 – “But the father said to his servants. Bring out the best robe and put it on him,
and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet.”
Isaiah 61:10 (NLT) 10 I am overwhelmed with joy in the LORD my God! For He has dressed me with the
clothing of salvation and draped me in a robe of righteousness. I am like a
bridegroom in his wedding suit or a bride with her jewels.
Romans 2:4 (NLT) 4 Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does
this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you
from your sin?

Philippians 4:19 (NLT) 19 And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his
glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 2:7 (NLT) 7 So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of
his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united
with Christ Jesus.
7. Rejoicing
Verse 23-24 – “ And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; 24 for
this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be
merry.”
Parental joy.
Proverbs 15:20 (NLT) 20 Sensible children bring joy to their father; foolish children despise their mother.
Proverbs 23:24 (NLT) 24 The father of godly children has cause for joy. What a pleasure to have children who are wise.
Romans 8:11 (NLT) 11 The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.
Ephesians 2:6 (NLT) 6 For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.
Colossians 3:1 (NLT) Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand.
