RAISING FUNDS FOR STARLIGHT By helping Starlight, you will be bringing smiles and laughter into the lives of seriously and terminally ill children who are afraid and in pain, both by granting them magical wishes and creating fun entertainment in every children’s hospital ward and hospice in UK. This year Starlight will help over 500,000 children in hospitals and hospices across the UK and it only because of the fundraising efforts of the general public, companies and trust funds that we can do this! Starlight is also very proud to tell you that your hard-earned donations will be spent wisely: 93p in every £1 you raise helps Starlight’s very poorly children.

Since our TV series ‘Starlight: for the Children’ aired on Channel 5 a DVD of which is available from Starlight. Starlight’s wish referrals have trebled. Page 2

WHAT WE DO Giving sick children their childhood back. Starlight grants once-in-a-lifetime wishes for children whose young lives are affected by a serious or terminal illness. A Starlight wish is a precious opportunity for these children to escape their illness and creates wonderful memories that the whole family can share together, whatever the future may hold. Starlight is also the only national charity working with every hospital and hospice throughout the UK, bringing entertainment, fun and distraction to over 500,000 sick children with a year-round programme of parties, pantomimes, Starlight Fun Centres and escapes. All Starlight’s activities are aimed at distracting children from the pain, fear and isolation they can often feel as a result of their illnesses. When Starlight began in 1986, we helped just 4 children; today, we help over 500,000 children every year all over the UK. Where possible, mums, dads, brothers and sisters are involved to strengthen family bonds at what is often a time of great stress and give everyone happy memories to share, no matter what the future may hold. Starlight receives neither Government nor Lottery support.

For more information on Starlight, please visit www.starlight.org.uk or request an information sheet from your materials order form on page 7.

PROMOTING YOUR EVENT Hints and Tips on Attracting Local Press Coverage Follow these simple instructions to get your event in your local newspapers and radio stations, and raise the profile of your event and of Starlight. Starlight can help you with phone numbers and email addresses for your local media. Two to three weeks before your event, send out a short outline of your fundraiser, explaining WHAT you’re doing, WHEN and WHERE it is happening and WHY it will be fun. If you are likely to get interesting photos, ask the press to send a photographer.

Here are a few tips: It needs to be clear and concise Use a short punchy headline Make it fun and interesting Include the date, time and venue Always stress the local angle Remember to provide your name and phone number at the bottom Follow up your press release with a phone call: without it your story could get lost.

“Funds are being raised for children’s charity Starlight Children’s Foundation, whose sole purpose is to brighten the lives of seriously and terminally ill children by granting their wishes and providing entertainment when they are in hospital. By doing this, Starlight takes their minds off the pain, fear and isolation caused by their illness and helps strengthen family bonds during difficult times. When it began in 1986, the charity helped just 4 children; this year it will help over 500,000 children in every children’s hospital ward and hospice throughout the UK. Starlight relies entirely on public generosity. To make a donation or refer a seriously ill child for a wish, simply log on to www.starlight.org.uk or call 020 7262 2881. We promise you that your hard-earned donations will be spent wisely: 93p in every £1 you donate goes towards helping Starlight’s very ill children”.

If you haven't got time to write your own release don't worry, simply fill in the press release template overleaf and either post or fax it to local journalists.

Sometimes journalists are too busy to attend events. Send follow-up details afterwards with an eye-catching photograph or call to let them know how it went.

You can always refer a journalist to the Media Enquiries section of Starlight’s website if further information is required. Good luck!

INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS Ideas to raise in class How do the children in your class feel when they are unwell or have sore tummy? Did it make them feel worried, sad or alone? Starlight’s children are often unwell for a long time and have to be very brave. They suffer from all sorts of different illnesses like cancer, cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy. Sometimes they have to spend a lot of time in hospital, away from school and friends. It is also a very worrying time for their mums and dads. Brothers and sisters can feel left out and upset. By granting sick children their greatest wish, Starlight gives them hope and happiness. That’s very good because doctors and nurses say that happy children respond better to treatment. Starlight helps make mums, dads and brothers and sisters happy too by including them in all the fun of the wish.

Along with the ‘fundraising at school’ idea’s page in your fundraising pack, Starlight also has wonderful, colourful newsletters that you might wish to show your pupils. You can also request a Starlight play, Christmas Song, DVD’s on wishes and Inspirational fundraisers, and PowerPoint presentations for both Primary and Secondary Schools, just call the fundraising team on 020 7262 2881 or email [email protected]. We hope you find the classroom activities on the following pages helpful, These pages are aimed at teaching young children more about the charity they are raising funds for, or could be used as themed activities for your “Starlight Wish Day” (see page 10 of your pack)

Setting a fundraising target for your pupils to work towards and making a Starometer with a moving star is an easy way to keep children involved and up-to-date with the school’s fundraising efforts! We find children are more motivated, more aware and more likely to think of Starlight. This not only encourages them to participate more in school activities but also to tell their parents about what they’re doing at school and how they’re supporting Starlight.

KATIE’S RAINBOW WISH Starlight’s children are often unwell for a long time and have to be very brave. They suffer from all sorts of different illnesses like cancer, cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy. Sometimes they have to spend a lot of time in hospital, away from school and friends. It is also a very worrying time for their mums and dads. Brothers and sis-ters can feel left out and upset. By granting sick children their greatest wish, Starlight gives them hope and happiness. That’s very good because doctors and nurses say that happy children respond better to treatment. Starlight helps make mums, dads and brothers and sisters happy too by including them in all the fun of the wish. Whatever children wish for, Starlight can make it happen. The wishes Starlight grant vary enormously. Some children wish to meet their favour-ite popstar, others to be a police officer for the day. One little girl, Katie, simply wished to see a rainbow. What would you have done to grant Katie’s wish? Where would you look for a rainbow? What conditions are needed for a rainbow? From research we know that when sunlight passes through falling drops of water, the light spreads out into a band of colours; that’s a rainbow. So, to see a rainbow, we need little drops of water and sunshine. Starlight took Katie to a very famous, big waterfall in the United States called Niagara Falls. As the water roars over the edge and hits the water and rocks below, it gets smashed into tiny drops of water that billow into the air. The sun was shining that day and Katie counted not one, not two, not three but 36 different rainbows!

RAINBOW ON THE WALL EXCERCISE

MATERIALS: Flashlight shallow bowl of water pocket mirror protractor PROCEDURE: 1. Use the protractor to set the mirror in the bowl at 30 degrees from the bottom of the bowl. Use clay or wax to hold the mirror in place. 2. Darken the room (or do the project at night). 3. Shine the flashlight toward the mirror. 4. Describe what you see. 5. Enrichment: On a very sunny day, spray the hose in an arc. Move around the spray until you see a rainbow in the spray. Based on what you have learned, explain why a rainbow forms in the spray.

PROBLEM: How can I make a spectrum (rainbow)? RESEARCH: Look up visible light, spectrum, or rainbows in a science textbook or ency-clopaedia. Write one page on what you learned. HYPOTHESIS: What do you think you need to do to make a rainbow?

DATA: Make a data table to record your observations. CONCLUSION: What did you learn by doing this activity? Did you answer the question you asked (your hypothesis)?
