By George Faithful, Chair International Development Committee Beginning in the October 2012 Countdown, the Interna-tional Development Committee asked the chapters to compete in an International Development contest in hopes of raising up to $10,000 during the 2012-2013 administra-tive year for scholarships to bring up to 10 International Delegates to the 100th International Educational Confer-ence , July 7-10, 2013, Chicago, Illinois. The deadline for that contest was December 31, 2012. Unfortunately, we did not get any response! But we feel certain the reason is we were too late getting it started for your fall institutes and conferences. So… We are going to run the contest again with the same rules except with a different deadline. Please help us with this! Calling all IAWP chapters to compete in the International Development contest. The Chapter that raises the most money for the International Development Fund, will be awarded one free night stay in Chicago. (It will be up to the room) This is a $140 value so the amount of money that needs to be raised must be over $400. Use your

Awards Redesign In the summer of 2010, the Award Redesign Team was established to review the awards structure and deter-mine if changes were needed. Shortly after that, a member online survey was conducted to gather input and sugges-tions about the awards pro-gram. During 2010, changes were approved to the mem-bership awards, and in 2011 changes were approved to the individual and group awards based on the survey results. The redesign of the chapter awards was the last step in the redesign process. The 2011-2012 Board of Di-rectors approved a strategic plan and reorganization of the IAWP committee structure. The redesign of the chapter awards is now similar to the new committee structure.

The chapter award categories are: Education, Communica-tion, Chapter Development, Recognition and Marketing. (Previously they were Educa-tion, Communication, Profes-sional Practices and Legisla-tion.) Many of the activities that are reported in the chap-ter awards remain unchanged, but where some of the activi-ties are reported has changed. For example: all legislative activity is reported under Communication (previously reported under Legislation); service projects are reported under Marketing (previously reported under Education); mainstream media is reported under Marketing (previously reported under Communica-tion); and awards are re-ported under Recognition (previously reported under Professional Practices.) The new chapter award, Chapter

Development, (previously re-ported under Professional Practices) includes holding an annual chapter business meet-ing, and that had previously been reported under the Edu-cation Award, which is where WPDP/CWS activities are re-ported If you have not done so previ-ously, it will be very important to review the chapter award criteria in the Handbook for Administration and Or-ganization before you begin preparing the award nomina-tions. REMEMBER: The new chap-ter award criteria is effective immediately for the 2012 con-test year. This means the chap-ter awards submitted by March 1, 2013, for activities that took place in 2012, fall under the new criteria.

The time has come to start preparing the 2012 award nominations, which must be sent to the IAWP Administrative Office, 1801 Louisville Road, Frank-fort, Kentucky, 40601, and postmarked by March 1, 2013.

If you have any questions regarding the awards’ criteria, please contact Recognition Committee Chair Tom Meyer

via email to [email protected] or by phone call to 605-626-2301.

Centennial Celebrating Requires Funds Celebrations require planning, and planning requires money. Each year the international educational conference is planned on a break-even budget. That budget does not provide for any additional funds to en-hance the year-long cen-tennial celebration. IAWP will be experienc-ing in 2013

Thus, the Centennial Council, co-chaired by Past International Presi-dent Linda Barnes (KY) and Mary Rogers (KY) have guided the council in not only planning but in ways to raise funds needed for those plans. This is your Centennial Celebration, IAWP members! Please

support it by participating in the fundraisers. Some of the fundraisers are fea-tured in this issue of Countdown, but watch for more in future issues. Help make the Centennial Celebration all it should be!

By Sharon Mike Education Chair At the International Educational Confer-ence in Spokane, I is-sued a challenge to have awarded 100 Certified Workforce Specialists (CWS) by our 100th International Educational Confer-ence and Centennial Celebration, July 7-10, 2013, Fairmont Hotel at Millennium Park, Chicago, Illinois. We currently have eight CWS recipients, and we have one applica-tion pending. You now have the Workforce Profes-sional Development Program (WPDP) online making it easier to go through that

portion of the certifi-cation process. Please help this dream be-come a reality. Help us build the profes-sionals IAWP repre-sents by using some of the following ideas: Make a challenge for your district or chap-ter; Challenge a co-worker; and Get folks excited about getting a profes-sional certification. I know there are IAWP members in California, Georgia, Maryland, Virginia, Montana, New York and Washington, who are already on their way to getting their WPDP completed in order to get certified. We even have one

Canadian member who is a WPDP par-ticipant! Our IAWP website has all the information you need. The steps to getting started include: 1.Just go to www.iawponline.org, 2.Look on the left side of the front page and click on Education, 3.You will find the de-tails on WPDP and CWS. It is not too late. Get started now! There will be a reward to the chapter with the most Certified Work-force Specialists when we meet together in Chicago for the 100th International Educa-tional Conference and Centennial Celebra-tion.

Editor’s Note: This is a reprint from the USDOL News Brief dated January 10, 2013. The International Associa-tion of Workforce Profes-sionals showed the holiday spirit by coordinating a giving tree for the N Street Village in Washing-ton, D.C. Employees from the department's Employ-

ment and Training Admini-stration joined with IAWP to provide new bath prod-uct gift sets, pajamas and slippers to residents and toiletries to homeless women. N Street Village is a community of empower-ment and recovery for homeless and low-income women providing compre-hensive services addressing both emergency and long-

term needs and helps women overcome employ-ment barriers. Rounding out the year with their community service efforts, IAWP, together with the local chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens and Belaborers Toastmasters Club, do-nated two boxes of dona-tions to Toys for Tots.

T'was the Season!

Delivering donations to N Street Village are (left to right) ETA employees Dolores Beran-Hall and Julie Balster; Ilana Cookler, development assistant at the N Street Village; ETA employees Daniel L. Hays and Angela McDaniel; and Heidi Gauthier, volunteer & in-kind gifts coordinator (at the N Street Village.)

projects, or membership campaign activities. Maybe one of the most successful activities within your IAWP chapter is a networking ses-sion that provides a great deal of camaraderie and stress relief as well as information exchange. Share those sto-ries with us via email to [email protected].

Countdown wants to hear from all chapter and districts about the events that make those areas of IAWP great. Countdown is pleased to feature the activities of the District of Columbia Chapter in this issue, and we hope other chapters will share stories with us too. They can be meeting summaries, award preparation sessions, service
