HES—RACE to Success!! Respect, Achievement, Confidence, and Excellence!!

Memories from Friends By Justine Widdison

2

Mr. Shipp- Some of my favorite events as a kid:

Fishing with my family

Riding bikes in the hills around our house

Catching frogs and tadpoles in the floodway

Swimming

Summer camp

Fun times I’ve had with other teachers

Taking our classes to Yellowstone Park with the other fourth grade classes

The time all teachers did a mystery scavenger hunt and finished by going to dinner together

Seeing the staff at Hanna Elementary work so well togeth-er and watching the kids grow When I was a sixth grade teacher and the elementary teachers challenged the middle school teachers to a vol-leyball game.

Mrs. J. Jones- I think one of the best things Mr. Shipp has brought to our school happens several times in a school year. Mr. Shipp is a great principal for celebrating the success-es of our students. It isn’t a one time thing, it is an on-going practice for him. Mrs. Scott- One of the best things about Mr. Shipp is that he dedicates everyday to making the students in our schools hap-py and celebrating everything they do. Mrs. Strauch- One of the greatest things I’ve observed about Mr. Shipp is he always seems to look for the silver lining in things. He also really looks to help everyone he interacts with. Whether it be his staff members or the students. Mr. Shipp is a very caring man. Mr. Shipp sees the good in everybody…he is a good friend which is his greatest gift to me … Ron Hoopes Mr. Scott - One of my things about Mr. Shipp is his sense of humor and kind manner. No matter your age from kid to adult alike. Mr. Shipp is driven by what’s best for kids from celebrat-ing every accomplishment to instilling a love for education.

Mrs. McKee- When I think of Mr. Shipp, I think of the true meaning of ‘kind’. He genuinely strives to model this character-istic with everyone that he meets throughout each day. I know he has imprinted all of us with his kind acts. Mr. Warren- My favorite thing about Mr. Shipp is his sense of humor. It makes coming to work fun knowing you can laugh and joke. I have appreciated his guidance, support in becom-ing a better teacher, and his positive outlook on life. Ms. Felton- Mr. Shipp truly cares about all of his students and his staff! He is always going above and beyond to provide edu-cational and fun experiences for us! He is a wonderful role model and friend. Mrs. Lee- Mr. Shipp always has a good attitude, every day is a “good day”, he will tell you, “ I have never had a bad day.” I believe his attitude wears off on the staff and students. “ Best Day Ever!” We will miss you Mr. Shipp. Mr. Madsen- One of the best things that I have noticed about Mr. Shipp is that he is very kind. He shows kindness to the students in the building as well as all of the adults, and he tries to make each day great for everyone. Ms. Sloan - Mr. Shipp is a combination of 2 very important characteristics of a leader - He is kind and he is intelligent. Mr. Shipp is able to lead by example, showing his staff, students, and community that he is not only thoughtful and well-read, but at the root of everything he does as a principal is his love of children. Mrs. George- The best thing about Mr. Shipp is his genuine care of everyone in the school, staff and students. The thing I will miss the most is his friendship and his great sense of hu-mor. Mrs. Sutter- Mr. Shipp is one of the most caring people I know. What I will miss the most is his friendship, his sense of humor and our morning meetings. Mrs. S. Jones - Mr. Shipp is one of the kindest people I know. Something that stands out for me is how he makes sure to welcome students and staff to school every day. Being a princi-pal comes with many challenges, but Mr. Shipp takes the time for all students and adults no matter how busy or difficult his day is.

Reading is important to Mr. Shipp like we are to him,so I asked him what was his favorite book. Here it is, Centennial by James Michener.

“Mr.Shipp what is your favorite book and why? Also, What is it about”?

‘’Hello Jared.

My favorite book is probably Centennial by James Michener. It is historical fiction about the western United States, and I really liked the characters in the book along with learning the history of the area.

The book tells the story of a fictional town in Colorado, though it could have just as easily been in Wyoming. It tells the story of the area all the way from the days of the dinosaurs through present day’’.

Teacher Interview by Tyler Nordquist

What was the best part as the principal of this school?

“The best part of being principal of this school is getting to work with great kids and wonderful teachers and other staff members. I am proud of each and every one of the kids here, and the staff here works together so well”.

What is the best memory you have had in this school?

“There are too many good memories to say that one is the best. One highlight was the opening ceremony and dedication for the first day in the new school. Everybody had worked so hard and it was great to see it all come together”.

What will you miss the most about this school?

“I will miss all of the great people. Students, staff, and parents. This is a very special place”.

Why did you become a principal?

“I had been a teacher and a technology director for many years. Be-coming a principal seemed like the place where my experiences could do the most good”.

What last bit of advice would you give us?

“When you dream, dream big!”

What are you going to do after this year?

“I don’t know for sure yet, but it’s fun to think about. I’m not ruling out doing something else in a school for a year or two, but I am looking forward to traveling, camping, and going to lots of music festivals”.

Who’s your favorite teacher?

“I could never name a favorite, but I hope all of the teachers think they are my favorite”.

Personal Notes from Shipp Family

I recruited help from our kids so here is a note from our daughter: My dad has inspired me to pursue the work I do today. My whole life I have watched him work so hard for students, teachers and his community. He cares deeply about making the world a better place. I love having philosophical conversations with him about what learning should look like for students. He believes that kids should be in-spired by the natural world and learn through do-ing. He wants students and teachers alike to be curious, ask big questions, and share wonderful ideas. My dad is a life-long learner and I hope he has spread that energy to your special communi-ty. From our conversations over the years, I know he really values working with all of you and at Hanna Elementary School and that you will al-ways hold a special place in his heart. Principal Notes—NORTHERN LIGHTS

HES—RACE to Success!! Respect, Achievement, Confidence, and Excellence!!

Celebrations!

With a few exceptions, this has been the best year of student attend-ance since I have been principal. I have signed more near-perfect and perfect attendance awards than ever before. Of course kids should stay home when they’re sick, but since we only have them for 159 of the 365 days, it’s important to have them at school when they are well. Thank you!

On our ski day a few weeks ago, one of the instructors remarked that 20 of our kids were easier to work with than a group of two she had worked with earlier. We have great kids!

At the combined music program in Saratoga a couple weeks ago, our kids stood out as the most cooperative. We have great kids!

Sinclair Refinery has donated money to support our kindergarten readiness workshops and recently purchased AED’s (Emergency Defibrillators) for each of our schools. We have great community support!

Every day I get to see amazing things. A student grasping a concept that they couldn’t the day before. A child helping another child up after fall-ing on the playground. A teacher asking a question which in turn gets a child thinking more deeply than they thought possible. Every day there is something to celebrate. We have great schools! -Mr. Shipp
