Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Group Inhouse Magazine 2014 Winter no.189 Self-Innovation

Creation of over 25,000 Local Jobs
On November 22 2014, the Philippines’
major daily newspaper Manila Bulletin gave
a major coverage to the Korean culture
festival, Hi Korea An-neong ASEAN, which
was held at the Subic Shipyard inside the
Freeport Zone. The article highlighted the
long history of political, economic, and
cultural exchanges and cooperation.
Korea-ASEAN amity, the event was held
with the participation of over 25,000
Filipino workers and it could be a key
example to show the friendly cooperation
between the Philippines and Korea. The
newspaper also quoted the congratulatory
message by Ahn Jin-gyu, President
of Subic Shipyard. He emphasized, “The
solid partnership between Korea and the
Philippines comes from the shared interest
and value and all the ships produced at the
Subic Shipyard are the results and proofs
of the two countries’ cooperation and
originality.”
been paid great attention to as an exem-
plary case of international exchanges and
cooperation while it achieved accumulated
sales of USD 5 billion and orders for more
than 100 ships in just five years after its
completion in 2009. Such a success was

active localization strategy. The shipyard
has worked hard to foster talented local
people that out of 25,000 employees at the
Subic Shipyard only around 400 people are
from Korea nowadays. For this, the Subic
Shipyard lavishly supports benefits for local
employees including the Hanjin Village
(a large-sized housing complex) as well as
various convenience facilities and medical
services. Furthermore, the shipyard took the
initiative to improve the technical competit-
iveness of local human resources by estab-
lishing the Skill Development Center (SDC),
one of the world’s largest scale training
centers.

worthy achievements, it had a laborious
process. It took HHIC-Phil long years to
win the trust and form a friendly relation-
ship with the Philippine government by
carrying out various national projects
large- and mega-scale ships with a wide
use while Yongdo Shipyard for high value-
added, special ships. The strong partner-
ship between Korea the world’s biggest

the center of the game.
Continued Growth through Maximized

December 11, 2014 to celebrate the
ASEAN-Republic of Korea Commemorative
assess the status of the Subic Shipyard in
the Philippines. This documentary high-
lighted the characteristics, strengths and
developments of 10 ASEAN countries and
mentioned well- educated, abundant
English as the Philippines’ biggest strength
and emphasized that the Subic Shipyard
provides good jobs and attractive work-
places for local Philippines who are having
difficulty in getting proper jobs. Recently,
the shipyard created 7,000 jobs for local
people with a lot of work as seen in USD 5
billion of accumulated sales achieved in
just five years since its foundation. Also, it
pays relatively high salaries with more
stable employment. In fact, a female
welder named Jessica said in the docu-
mentary film that she was able to have a
better life after she started to work at the
Subic Shipyard. She expressed her satis-
faction by saying that she can save money
and send her children to school although
she had had nothing in the past. This
proves that the active recruiting of local
workers and continuous instruction of
techniques were the driving force for such
great records as receiving orders for over
100 ships and being selected as one of the
world’s top 10 shipyards. Actually, the
Subic Shipyard shows the rapid growth in
including harbors, airports, and bridges
after the company became the first
company to enter the Philippines in 1973.
However, this led to the Philippine govern-
ment’s full support for HHIC-Phil and as a
result, with the great record of winning the
bid for 12 container ships before the
construction of the shipyard, HHIC-Phil
was awarded a presidential award by the
president of the Philippines in July 2008 for
the first time in Asia.
The recent growth of the Subic Shipyard is
even more brilliant. It continues sustainable
growth and was ranked 10th on the list of
the world’s top 10 shipyards, according to
the U.K.’s Clarkson Research Studies. This
fact is made all the more astounding
because the shipyard had to overcome
adverse climate conditions, including
building infrastructure. To overcome such
problems, the Subic Shipyard developed
large-scale movable shelters which
same time, it maximized synergy with
Yongdo Shipyard by adopting the strategy
to supply various shipbuilding tools and
materials from Busan. HHIC-Phil will lead
the economy of Korea and the Philippines
by using a two-track strategy to utilize the
Subic Shipyard as a production base for
Subic Shipyard: A Bridgehead for Korea- Philippine Economic Cooperation
The 2014 ASEAN-Republic of Korea Commemorative Summit which was held on
December 11 and 12, 2014 at BEXCO in Busan forecasted that friendly
cooperation between Korea and the Philippines will be continued. The two
countries are already maximizing synergy in economic cooperation through the
HHIC-Phil’s Subic Shipyard. It was selected as one of the 10 best shipyards in
the world in five years after the completion of its construction, and helped make
the Philippines the fourth biggest shipbuilding country in the world. The
shipyard’s active localization strategy has been considered a role model for
successful international exchanges and cooperation.
productivity as local employees’ technical
skills improved. HHIC-Phil increased its
2015 sales goal by USD 0.2 billion to USD
1.15 billion. The shipyard is expected to
solidify its status as the biggest exporter
within the Subic Bay Freeport Zone,
operated and managed by the Subic Bay
Metropolitan Authority (SBMA). SBMA
complimented that the Subic Shipyard is a
most desirable example of a foreign
company attracted in the zone as the
shipyard creates jobs and contributes to
local communities, beyond simple invest-
ments with facilities and capital. The future
of the Subic Shipyard will soon influence
the future of the Korean shipbuilding
industry and even the future of the
Philippines.

HHIC-Phil also won the bid for 12 container
ships, establishing a new chapter in the future of
global shipbuilding.

Philippines become the 4th largest shipbuilding
country in the world.
The world’s largest dock (No. 6) is seven soccer
fields in length and has a capacity to handle
up to 450,000 tons a year. Recently, orders for
mega-scale ships are rapidly increasing.
