May 1st Chapter Meeting The February Chapter meeting will

be on Tuesday May 1st at the Farmers Branch Library, located on the northwest corner of Webb Chapel and Golfing Green Dr. The meeting will be held in the auditorium and begin at 6:30 p.m. with socializing and coffee. The program will begin promptly at 7 p.m. and finish by 9:00 p.m.

We are pleased to welcome Lloyd Wright to speak at our May meeting. The topic is Drones. As a professional pilot and a Drone operator, he has important information on the regulations, which seem to change frequently, and proper operations of this fast growing segment of aviation.

Even if you don’t plan on being a pilot of a remotely operated vehicle, knowing what to expect in the airspace around our airports is good information for all pilots.

I saw his presentation at Cedar Mills last fall, and it is was very informative. I think you will find it interesting as well.

From the President/EditorBy Michael Stephan

The Fly-In Season is now in full swing. Sun-N-Fun got it started last month and as the weather blossoms here in the area look for more to come. Best time of the year to fly.

We had a real good time at the visits to AeroCountry and Pete’s House, to see the progress on his RV-7 and see Marvin and Ken’s airplanes and vintage cars. Both are great hosts and a special thanks to Marvin’s wife Pat who always has food and beverages for us.

Since this publication is full of my writing, I am going to use this spot to get up on the soapbox, stray off topic (I promise no politics), or inject a bit of humor.

So this month I want to warn about being in a hurry. So many mistakes happen when you get in a hurry. If you are making decisions while hurried, stop and look at the consequences if things go wrong, because they are about to . Plan Ahead!

That is good advice from a life long, well known procrastinator, who lives life behind the curve. I thought about writing a book about it, but haven’t got around to it yet. I do have a few working titles:

“I Should Have Written this Book Years Ago. My life as a procrastinator.”

“I’ll Do It Tomorrow. A procrastinator’s guide to getting things done.

Don’t look for it on shelves any time soon.

Mel Asberry to be awarded the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award at May meeting.By Michael Stephan

An Addition to the Board of DirectorsAt our March meeting we elected our Board Members for

2018. Since then we have had another member eagerly volunteer to serve on the Board. So at the April meeting we had a special motion to add Ben Wright to the current Board. It passed unanimously by the members at the meeting.

Ben is currently building an RV-14 in the hangar next to his Dad’s RV-10 project at Grand Prairie.

We are excited to have Ben join us on the Board.

The Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award is the most prestigious award the FAA issues to pilots certified under Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) part 61. This award is named after the Wright Brothers, the first US pilots, to recognize individuals who have exhibited professionalism, skill, and aviation expertise for at least 50 years while piloting aircraft as "Master Pilots".

The May meeting will be extra special with one of our long time members receiving the prestigious Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award. The award requires 50 years of piloting expertise. That is a lot of years of being a pilot, and deserves a celebration.

Mel has not only been a safe pilot, but has helped others do the same. Very involved in the homebuilt aircraft arena, Mel has mentored builders as a tech counselor, worked with pilots as a Flight Advisor, and inspected and awarded Airworthiness Certificates for countless aircraft as a DAR.

If I have a technical question, I call Mel. He knows the answers. I’ve tagged along many inspections to look and learn a few things. If you are a Kitplanes subscriber, you can read his “Ask The DAR” column.

So it is exciting to see one of our most devoted members receive a major achievement award.

Congratulations Mel!

arriving was intense all day. Some of the parking areas such as General Aviation Parking, General Aviation Camping, and Vintage were reported to be near capacity. This was the best turn out for GA aircraft in the past several years. It appears this is still a fly-in.

The exhibitors were pretty much aviation related with a few "sunglass sellers". Van's had their RV-14A and RV-12iS there. Aircraft Spruce, Wicks and several smaller exhibitors were there for those wanting parts or tools. Avionics exhibitors were in abundance. I would like to have spent more time checking out ADS-B solutions and such, but with the weather two days were lost and time ran out.

The airshow was good even with cancellation of the Thunderbirds. The Navy FA-18 Super Hornet and USAF Viper Team F-16 were substitutes and they put on a good show. The crowd that was there to see the show did not seem diminished even without the Thunderbirds.

The Heritage Flights are always popular. This year’s consisted of a P-40, a P-38 and an F-16.

For the first time at Sun n Fun the CAF Tora Tora Tora squadron performed in the airshow. This was scheduled for Saturday and Sunday only but I was lucky to catch the Saturday show as all of Sunday was cancelled. I had a great viewing spot and seat courtesy of the EAA!. They had a tent with chairs right on the flightline with free drinks and ice cream. All I had to do was show my EAA card.

The announcers made it clear these are not original aircraft. They are converted AT-6s originally built for the Tora Tora Tora movie and it is good to see they are being preserved. The aircraft represented were the Mitsubishi A6M "Zero", Aichi D3A "Val" dive bomber and Nakajima B5N "Kate" torpedo bomber. Throughout the performance the announcer with the aid of large Jumbotron screen talked about the historical role of each aircraft and the events of the entire attack.

The CAF B-17 made several passes with one main "stuck up" to represent the actual inopportune arrival of the flight of B-17s from mainland during the attack.

The warbird ramp was absolutely full, too numerous to list all. The larger military aircraft were a draw for the airshow crowd as usual. Present were a C-17, KC-135, a couple of C-130s and a bunch more. There were also some unique military aircraft I had not seen before.

One is the A-20 Havoc bomber shown here.

One day during the airshow I got a brief chance to ride through the Vintage area. There were many beautifully restored aircraft on the grounds. Again there were some unique ones.

Below is a DeHavilland Dove. It was built in 1956 has gone through several owners, modifications and restorations. Probably the most significant was conversion from somewhat less than

reliable Gypsy Queen 70 inverted 6 cyl engines with Lycoming IO-720s. It has since been restored with modern avionics.

On the cover is a Grumman amphibian that should get the award for most spectacular paint job. According to the crew with the plane it was all airbrushed. It has all the latest avionics and the turbo prop conversion.

As the LSA area was next to the Vintage area I did a quick pass through there. All I can say there was an aircraft for all tastes available. From ultra light to a sophisticated LSA plus a large selection of rotorcraft.

A really unique aircraft is the Bell P-63 King Cobra.

The main focus of the week I spend at Sun n Fun is working with the General Aviation Parking group. A fun part of this every year is having the Royal Air Force Air Cadets work with us marshaling airplanes. In the UK if they work at an airshow the Health and Safety rules dictate they may only assist in parking cars. When they get to Sun n Fun and can actually work with moving aircraft which makes them very happy. One day the young lady working with me was in the right place as the CAF B-17 came through the taxiway intersection. She was absolutely thrilled as she sent it on its way for one of its many rides.

As I said before the Sunday event was completely cancelled due to bad weather. One problem with this was that the pyrotechnics for the Tora Tora Tora show had already been placed when the decision was made to cancel. Apparently once mixed the chemicals cannot be transported so they must be set off. I was told this was $5000 dollars worth of pyro seen only by firemen and staff.

The fact that Sun n Fun 2018 was not what it could have been was by no means the fault of Sun n Fun management. There were campus and operational improvements to make the experience rewarding for pilots, exhibitors and spectators.

Our thoughts go out to the lost Thunderbird pilot's family. As we all know the weather is out of our control. After the

tornado of 2011 weather safety is high on the list of considerations. Even before the weather turned rainy on opening day all the volunteers were briefed on were to go in case of severe weather. The cancellation on Sunday was out of an abundance of caution. Although costly, the correct decision was made.

Here is to looking forward to next year.

Cleburne PancakesBy Michael Stephan

I attended my first pancake fly-in of the year. It happened to be the 5th Saturday Pancake Event at Cleburne Airport (CPT). As usual, it attacks a large number of local flyers. There was the several RV’s but even more other non-homebuilt airplanes. There was even a powered parachute there. Don’t know if it flew in or not.

Don Christiansen was there. Don’t know how he does it, but he seems to draw a crowd.

Cool weather, nice crowd, talking airplanes and eatin pancakes. A Winner.

Pete Miller Hangs His EngineBy Michael Stephan

If you follow Pete’s build site, you would know that his engine (that he built at Aerosport Power) is now hanging on the front of his RV-7.

With the help of a few friends and a couple of veteran builders, the engine jumped onto the mount in a few hours of work.

May 19th Young Eagels at RBDBy Michael Stephan

Jim Quinn has a Young Eagle group for us to fly on May 19th at Dallas Exec (RBD). These are CAP cadets, so they have an interest in learning to fly. We start flying at 9am, and I encourage everyone to come out lend a helping hand spend some time with some great kids.

But when we get a wanna-be pilot that doesn’t have a group, we will pair them up with a local Young Eagle Pilot. Norm Biron is great about getting this done. Recently he flew a young man named Leo. Judging by the smiles, it was a good flight.

When Charlie Wright reached one year from the start of his RV-10, he commemorated it with a picture of the progress.

Those tricky bottom bolts. A little praying doesn’t hurt.

Project VisitsBy Michael Stephan

I’ve been in a lot of cluttered hangars. I walk into one every time I work on my projects. But the hangar that Marvin and Ken keep is amazing. I tease Marvin that his hangar is more museum than hangar. He and Ken keep everything neat and tidy and by the look of shine on all the vehicles in there, they must have a lifetime supply of elbow grease.

In the Krebaum wing of the hangar Ken has his RV-8, which is well known on the race circuit, and in the corner his rare Skyote. The Skyote still flies, but Ken says it takes just the right temperature day to have a comfortable flight in the open cockpit biplane.

Marvin’s wing has more autos than airplanes. His RV-8 is nearest the doors, but tucked in behind it are his Ford Thunderbird and Chevy Impala. Hanging from the ceiling is his single seat Soneri, and parked underneath is the one-owner Ford Galaxie. The Vintage Camero belongs to Marvin’s son.

These events are best when Marvin’s wife Pat is involved. She does a terrific job taking care of her guests. When we need a social activity, Marvin and Pat are great hosts.

A few days later we travelled to Pete Miller’s house to see his progress on the RV-7. Several years into the build Pete now has an engine mounted. Now working on the cowl and firewall forward installations, Pete is making excellent progress. Once done, instrument panel will be all that is left. Pete is building a real nice RV.

Mark Merrell’s RV-8By Michael Stephan

Since Mark moved from Grand Prairie to Parker County Airport, I lost track of his progress. Little did I know that he is an inspection away from being able to fly. One of the last steps is Weight and Balance, which is now done. Mark did a nice job keeping the weight down. Of the many RVs I have weighed, his is on the lighter end of the spectrum. To calculate the CG, Mark has developed a spreadsheet that is one of the best I have seen. Better than some of the apps I have paid for.

The panel of his RV is IFR equipped yet still very simple. Mostly from the Advanced Flight System EFIS and the VPX electrical system management, which interfaces with the EFIS display. He can see and control all the electrical loads in the airplane from this interface as well as control them with external switches. Don’t be fooled by the clean panel. There is a lot of capability there.

Excellent job Mark, and we look forward to hearing about that first flight soon.

Wear and TearBy Michael Stephan

Some parts of an airplane take much more abuse than others. The landing gear is one that takes very high torsional loads, and should be inspected closely and not only at your yearly inspection. A local RV-12 at GP suffered a failure on the nose wheel bracket. It was a welded aluminum box structure that looked pretty tough. Although when it suffered a small crack in the welded area, it propagated until the whole structure failed. The wheel pant hid the damage until a distinct alignment issue hinted at the problem.

A second nose wheel bracket was installed and finally a redesign of the bracket was made available to RV-12 owners. As shown in the picture, version 2.0 uses thicker plate with a machined yoke. Gone is the welded box structure.

A reminder that not experiments work the first time. Redesigns are required as these airplanes accumulate

time. Keep a close eye on your high stress parts.
