Oil RigsRecycled01

The Gulf of Mexico is widely known to be one of the most off-shore oil platform infested areas in the world. The thousands of oil platforms scattered throughout the gulf are operational so long as oil is available to be extracted, but what happens when the oil finally runs out?

The project proposed utilizes salvaged offshore platform components and materials that are collected as scrap when the oil platform is to be demolished or abandoned, once oil is no longer available to be drawn.

As a floating structure, the research centre is able to be towed to a location where an oil spill has once occurred. without disturbing the sensitive environments that surround it, providing researchers with a facility that allows them to fully study the area and the impact of the spill on the shores, animals and plants in chosen areas. The centre is able to fully sustain itself, providing occupants with clean water and a stable human comfort zone through the use of passive and vernacular design.

Page 8: Haneen Dalla-Ali Design works 2010-2013

8

The main structure of the floating facility, a nature conservation and research centre, consists of eight derrick towers tilted to the side and attached to one another at the ends. In addition, other salvaged components are used to complete the structure including the helipad structure used to support the water purification system, the oil tanks used as floaters, the living quarters’ stairs and the steel beams of the original oil rig to create the steel frames used for floors, ceilings and roofs.

The Aurelian Walls of Rome are the largest archeological remain in the city, a large structure that has once been built far out in the country side around it to protect it yet today stretches within it offering little to no function. The project proposes to transform a certain moment within the wall, south of the Villa Borghese park, where the wall has slightly fallen apart, into a jewellery maker’s dwelling. The proposed residence proposes the use of a minimalist Siena marble box to be inserted into the void of what used to be a watch tower within the wall. The dwelling consists of a work studio and living space upstairs and a modest store for the jewellery to be sold in downstairs.

The Grand Reflections hotel and spa is located in the downtown area of Galt, Cambridge city, Ontario. The four storey hotel sits on a water feature which doubles as an ice rink, creating what could potentially be a winter hot spot for the downtown Galt area. Aside from bringing the local inhabitants of the city of Cambridge together by serving as a corridor between Ainslie Street and Water Street, the hotel’s 50 rooms provide an activity filled stay for visitors of the city. The unique spa, unfolding amidst the water feature, restaurant and gym (located on the second floor) are three amenities that serve to accommodate both hotel guests and member of the public. The main feature of the hotel is the spa, located on the ground floor and second floor (which is accessible from the street at this level due to the site slope). The spa unfolds from East to West consisting of rooms, such as change rooms, aqua therapy, and saunas on either side of a wide corridor. The occupants then descend into the ground level midway through the spa into the pool room. The pool room (shown on the right) is connected to the outside through sliding glass doors that surround the space. When the weather is warm enough, these doors are slid open giving swimmers a unique experience as the pool becomes almost a part of the outdoor water feature that fills up the site. The reflections created by the pool ripples and waves forming on the ceiling are what give the hotel its name.

The main feature of the hotel is the water feature that doubles as an ice rink in the winter. During the summer, people are able to dip their feet in the water and cool off. During the winter, the frozen feature provides a unique moment of contrast between the exterior where people are able to skate around the site, and the interior where guests and members of the public warm up in the sauna’s that outlook the pool or the pool room around which the public skates.

Located in the quiet suburban side of Cambridge, Ontario, the artist’s residence is the perfect getaway for a visual artist. The ridge-side single occupant residence features a central entrance courtyard around which the layout of the entire dwelling unfolds. The glazed walls surrounding the courtyard provide a view of the art studio from almost all the spaces of the house, serving as a reminder for the artist of his/her mission to bring as many of their artistic visions to life as possible during their six week long stay.

The layout of the plan is oriented in accordance to the solar geometry of the location. The bedroom, for instance, features a horizontal strip window facing the East in order to draw light in during the morning. The kitchen/dining area as well as the living room area on the other hand have windows facing the West and South in order to stay warm and cosy all day long and provide the occupant with a sunset view every evening

Architectural Design process aside, this exercise provided the opportunity to focus on visual representation and graphic experimentation. The task was to focus on an already existing building/building element and expressing it graphically, carefully representing shadows and light. I was assigned the Rotman School of Management designed by the Toronto based KPMB office. The representation drawings were prepared using a mixture of hand sketches, computer generated graphics (Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator) and digital photography.

07Fort Wellington Visitor Reception Centre

“The centre provides regional economic stimuli, and an enhanced, more focused visitor experience, while putting community pride on display with multi-purpose rooms, exhibit spaces, and a War of 1812 era gunboat installation. Through the integrated design process, the re-envisioned visitor centre reinvents the existing building, adding elements of sustainability, while leaving important historical features intact.” -DIALOG

During my student interhsip at DIALOG, I was had the opportunity to create presentation graphics, 3D computer models, and rendered drawings to explain the design intents of the project. The work I produced is to be considered for future competition entries or simply as archive materials

Left - An exploded axonometric render of the building’s spaces to show the possible circulation routes and the sizes of the spaces relative to one another. The render is obtained from a 3D Rhinoceros 5.0 model and rendered using V-Ray.

Using construction drawings already produced by the firm prior to construction, I was able to create a 3D Rhinoceros model. From the 3D model, I was then able to create renders of plans, sectional perspectives

URBAN STRATEGIES

08During my student internship at URBAN STRATEGIES INC., I had the chance to contribute to the Ontario Place Revitalization Project. Tasks assigned included graphic preparation for a due diligence exercise. The graphics were to help express the planning approaches and ideas created by the urban designers and planners in an easy and exciting manner to the client. The graphics were to be expressive enough to represent abstract and conceptual ideas, yet simple and clear enough to communicate those to the client. My work term at URBAN STRATEGIES INC. helped me gain a better understanding of the urban planning and design perspective, which is much more objective and larger in scale than the architectural one.

At Moriyama & Teshima Architects, I had the opportunity to work on a few projects including the Humber College Building ‘G’ design. The project is a new addition consisting of event and administration spaces to the already existing heritage building, which was formerly a part of the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital. Tasks assigned included digital 3D modelling using Sketchup and then rendering using V-Ray for Sketchup. Building the 3D model of both the existing building and the proposed design allowed me to familiarize myself with the heritage building within the Humber College site and take part in proposing different ideas for space arrangements, facades, and materials for the new event spaces. .
