Handwriting Practice Tips
Before the Pencil: 1. Teach children the starting and stopping points for each letter. This can be done by having
children trace letters with their index finger. 2. Teach children to trace the letters b, d, and p with one stroke, instead of lifting the finger to
make the curves. 3. Have children trace letters in the air for extra practice. Also use sand and finger paints to let
children practice writing with the finger.
Introducing the Pencil: 1. Learning to grip a pencil is challenging to a preschooler at first. Use a larger pencil that is
easier to grip. Have them hold the pencil with the thumb and pointer finger fairly close to the writing tip. Those two fingers alone should be able to grip and move the pencil. Frequently, children use two or three fingers along with the thumb because their muscles are weak. However the middle finger should be curved under, with the pencil resting lightly on the first joint from the tip. It provides balance. The fourth finger and pinky are curved and lined up under the middle finger, out of the way.
2. Handwriting practice sheets should have wide lines that give preschoolers plenty of space to
write. There should also be a dotted line in the middle of each practice line as a guide for preschoolers.
