Book Review

Entrelac: The Essential Guide to Interlace Knitting © 2010 by Rosemary Drysdale

The Entrelac technique produces an interlocking diamond pattern and adds texture and visual interest to knitted fabrics. This book introduces this fascinating effect with clear directions and tutorials, showcasing and highlighting the endless possibilities in lace, cables, colourwork and more. There are:

65 stitch-patterns with swatches that let you knit and explore entrelac from every angle,

more than 25 complete patterns for sweaters, wraps, accessories, home decor and adorable baby knits,

step by step instructions with photos that thoroughly explain all you need to know.

This book was purchased for the Guild library and can be found in section 1 - Techniques (red dot).

Beryl Gear, Queen of Knitted Toys,

turns 90 in August

Beryl was born in Wayville on 15th August 1927, educated at Henley Primary School, Grades 6&7 at a private school in Grange and then at Adelaide High School. She then took up an apprenticeship in Ladies Hairdressing at age 14 years and 6 months.

Her knitting is beautifully even, her sewing up is a feature and the faces on the toys are extremely personable. She learned her knitting skills from her father beginning at age 8. Beryl's "stash" is voluminous, mainly 8 ply acrylic with many different shades of each colour available to use.

She values her knitting so much that it is always with her wherever she goes. Her proudest achievement was creating the "Woodmouse Family"; Lord and Lady Woodmouse their children Primrose and Wilfred and 2 nursemaids.

Beryl enjoys the Guild for the comradeship, together with all the hints that members pass on to her. Her advice to new knitters is "stick to it". Unfortunately Beryl has broken each wrist and also had a hip replacement in the time she has been a member of the Guild, however, she keeps knitting and is a great advocate for keeping young by using your hands and head! Jean Spence

Charlotte Dowling will turn 10 in August

Charlotte was introduced to the Guild by her Nana, Lynda Lato, who brings her to meetings. It has been 18 months since Charlotte began knitting and she has no special preference about what to knit. Her stash is described as multi coloured. She is willing to try 'anything', and is especially pleased with her knitted hamster. What she likes best about the Guild is that the members make her feel welcome. Charlotte's advice to learners is "Be patient".

We wish you a Happy Birthday, Charlotte and many wonderful years of discovering the joys of knitting.

Handy Hint

I keep all my knitting needles, tied in pairs, in boxes. Four needles are mounted on cardboard and circular needles are separate from the others. I can always find my needles when I need them. Over the years I have found some lovely boxes. Joy Kirk

Trading Table 2 September

We're looking for 'goodies' to make this a great success. You can supply any craft items, including finished goods, leftover yarn, unwanted crafting supplies, tools, books, and patterns. The Guild will take a commission of 10% on sales. Please fill in a stocksheet and make sure that each item has a swing tag with your name, the price and a number that corresponds to the number on your stocksheet. The Guild will supply patterns and books for sale. Do some crafty decluttering and in someone else's discards find a hidden treasure.

From the President

I have been doing something for the first time – knitting socks under the tuition of Wendy Harvey, one of our wonderful Guild teachers. I believe that the best way to learn is to get stuck in, to try and sometimes succeed and sometimes fail, to rip out the mistakes you can't live with AND to live with the mistakes you can. Making mistakes means that you learn about structure, process, what you like and what you don't and where your tolerances are. Looking back on the mistakes you have left in reminds you later of the journey and how much you have learnt. I urge all members, beginners and experienced knitters alike, to take part in the workshop program to try something new. It's humbling to be in the shoes of a beginner, and very satisfying to learn a new skill.

With the AGM coming up in September, now is the time to think how you can contribute to the Guild. With Nicole's second term coming to an end, we need a new Vice President and you are encouraged to nominate for this and/or any position. Nomination forms are available from the secretary.

My sincere thanks go to all the members of the Executive Committee, those who are leaving and those who are staying. You have been a great team, and I appreciate the work you have done to manage the Guild. Margaret Burke

NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

To be held after the General Meeting on Saturday 2 September 2017.

The business of the meeting will include the election of President, Vice President, Secretary and committee members. Nomination forms will be available at August and September meetings.

The order of business for the meeting will be:

Welcome Apologies Minutes of previous AGM Business arising from the minutes Correspondence President's Annual Report Treasurer's Annual Report Appointment of Auditor Annual Subscriptions General business • Constitution Review • Ratification of appointments to Operational

Positions • Any other business Election of Committee Close of meeting

We will start the day with shared lunch at 12.30 and a trading table.

Tips and Techniques Workshop 7 October

Learn the little secrets to make knitting life easier and better. With more than 80 years of knitting experience, Maureen has gathered many tips, techniques, and tricks to help improve your knitting. The last part of the class will be open for all knitting questions, so come with your questions and take away lots of small fix-its to improve those details.

Report - Sewing Stitching & Hand Craft Show

The show was very successful. Margaret, Lorraine and myself set up on the Thursday, with over 400 items to sell from 16 members. The overall look, with the bunting, was very colourful and eye catching. The stand location was very good, alongside the Embroiderer's Guild and the Hand Spinners and Weavers Guild.

There was a good range for sale, beanies, scarves, great variety of toys to string bags. Lots of needles and magazines were sold, together with lots of wool.

The first day was extremely busy and everyone worked hard. Saturday was steady and Sunday is traditionally quieter. The pack-up went well but the torrential rain at that time, made it quite difficult to load our vehicles.

The management of the member's pieces for sale was certainly much easier now we are using stock sheets with matching swing tags. A double check on takings and returning unsold items.

The Knit and Crochet a Row and Go, help make a scarf for charity, was very popular and we had many interesting conversations in promoting the Guild. Pauline

Upcoming Craft & Quilt Fair

The next event is the Craft & Quilt Fair, Thursday 21 - Sunday 24 September 2017, 10am until 4pm.

This show is for exhibition only. It will be for current & previous Royal Show entries, with their ribbons if possible, winners or not. Also any exquisite knits or crochet that you have to showcase our skills.

I will be collecting items at the August K&N, September meeting (AGM) and September K&N or by arrangement before show set up Wednesday.

I am looking for volunteers for each day to help promote the Guild. Pauline Tuft, Event Co-ordinator

Commission work

I am still looking for members to let me know if they are interested in doing commission work. I have asked at the last couple of meetings if there are members willing to accept the various requests. Even if you are willing to sew up garments, please let me know. Pauline Tuft
