WELCOME LETTER Dear Students,
Welcome to the World Federation of Music Therapy! We see students as a vital part of our organization as you are the next generation of professional music therapists and leaders in our field. In order to improve student involvement on the World Federation of Music Therapy, the WFMT Council 2008-2011 looked into students’ requests and meaningful collaborations.
First, I piloted a project called “Let’s Go International” with students of the American Music Therapy Association Students (AMTAS). As a direct outcome of this project, the WFMT Council created the first World Congress of Music Therapy Scholarship for Students covering registration fees and one meal for six students attending the forthcoming 2011 World Congress in Seoul, Korea. Second, we designed a WFMT for Students page on the WFMT website, including four initial projects (i.e. Window to the World, Info Cards, Connection Project, and a short-term discussion board). Third, we established two new membership categories: one for Student Organizational Members and one for Student Individual Members. And, we are delighted that AMTAS became our first Student Organizational Member followed by the European Association for Music Therapy Students (EAMTS).
Going one-step further, we would like to establish the first WFMT Assembly of Student Delegates (ASD). The WFMT Council sees the ASD as an innovative, vital, and integral new component of the World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT). Our intention is
1. to enhance students’ knowledge of the profession, 2. to provide a forum for international student activities 3. to facilitate the sharing of ideas, thoughts, and opinions, and 4. to assist in preparing responsible, politically aware, and skillful
leadership of WFMT. As a Student Delegate, I hope you take the opportunity to learn, share, and get involved to create the future of music therapy worldwide. I am looking forward meeting you in Seoul, Korea. Yours, Petra Kern President of WFMT
Serving on the WFMT Assembly of Student Delegates (ASD) is a wonderful way to further your involvement within the field of music therapy. The opportunity to serve your peers and profession comes with both honor and responsibility. As a Student Delegate, you will meet like-minded and motivated student leaders from around the world. You will also have the chance to observe and learn from the leadership of the WFMT Council, especially at the World Congress of Music Therapy, which occurs once every three years. There will be an Annual ASD Meeting each year, likely to be held online. The ASD will convene in person once every three years at the World Congress of Music Therapy. These meetings provide students with the opportunity to network and further their understanding of our global professional association. For the WFMT and the profession of music therapy to continue on a successful path, students must be prepared to assume leadership roles as professionals. As a WFMT ASD Delegate, you will be the primary link between the ASD and the students in your region. This means that your main task as a Student Delegate is to collect and share information. You will correspond with the students in your region to solicit information about their ideas and current projects. You will then communicate this information to the WFMT ASD . You will report back to the students in your region and share the information you receive at the ASD Meeting. You will be part of a dynamic team and will have ample opportunity to learn about WFMT and music therapy worldwide. Please review this WFMT ASD Delegate Handbook for further information regarding the responsibilities of the Student Delegates. If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] Best wishes, Rose Fienman Executive Assistant of WFMT
