Brenham Children’s Chorus -1.1 2013-2014
Organized
The Brenham Children’s Chorus began as a dream in the hearts of many over a period of
multiple years. While some dreamed, one took action. After retiring from a successful
career as an attorney in Houston, Paul Pomeroy and his wife, Booty, moved to Brenham.
While spending summers in Ajijic, Mexico, Paul had the unique opportunity of hearing
the Houston Children’s Chorus on many occasions as they came to San Miguel each
summer on a concert tour. Anxious to see something similar to benefit the children in his
new found home of Brenham, Paul and friend of the arts, Allen Commander, paid a visit
to Pam Bennett Young in hopes of persuading her to become the Artistic Director of a
proposed children’s chorus. Having just begun a choir program as the Music Specialist at
Krause Elementary School, Pam was hesitant to accept such a position knowing that her
commitments left little time for additional activities, but Paul Pomeroy was determined.
He proceeded to gain tax-exempt status as a non-profit organization for Brenham
Children’s Chorus, began to acquire financial backing, and gathered a group of dedicated
child and music advocates to serve on the Board of Trustees for the Chorus. These
original Board members were Melvin Ziegenbein, Jr., Michael G. Shoup, Sr., Bob Smith,
Katie Cron, and Emma Wright. Another visit to Pam with this information in hand was
all it took to convince her that this was definitely something that would be
enthusiastically supported and that the groundwork was in place for strong business
ethics that would allow her to focus primarily on artistic issues. And the rest, they say, in
history!
The Chorus began with a concert in the Brenham High School Auditorium on April 12,
2003 in conjunction with the Houston Children’s Chorus. Children from all of the public
schools and several private schools were auditioned by music teachers and chosen to
participate in the Brenham Children’s Chorus Honor Choir. The children rehearsed once
a week for several months in preparation for the concert with Pam Bennett Young as their
rehearsal director, Martha Haydon as the accompanist, and Julie Steen and Mary Jane
Zorn as assistant directors. Steve Roddy, Artistic Director of the Houston Children’s
Chorus, and a group of his chorus members came for a choir clinic with the Brenham
Honor Choir on Friday night and all day on Saturday, culminating with a joint concert on
Saturday evening. The audience of over 1,000 was wowed by the 120 voice honor group,
and the Brenham Children’s Chorus was born. Office space was provided by Brenham
ISD in the Community Education Building and Jean P. Maly became the first
Administrative Manager for the Chorus. Rehearsals for the first Brenham Children’s
Chorus began at Brenham High School in June 2003 in preparation for a performance for
the Brenham ISD Convocation of Teachers in August.

Brenham Children’s Chorus -1.2 2013-2014
History
2003-2004 During the first year, the Chorus of 8-13 year olds rehearsed weekly in the
Brenham Junior High School Choir Room and performed for over 10,000 people in 5
Texas counties. Those performances included a Fall Concert at Blinn’s O’Donnell
Center, Handel’s “Children’s Messiah” at Christ United Methodist Church in College
Station, and Brenham High School with the Brazos Valley String Quartet, a sold out first
performance at Festival Hill with special guests Houston Children’s Chorus and Carlos
Alberto, an 11 year old tenor prodigy from Mexico, and a number of private concerts.
They also performed for the Texas Legislature in the Rotunda of the State Capitol in
Austin, made a concert tour of schools in Brenham ISD, Bellville ISD, Burton ISD, and
Hempstead ISD, and closed out the season with 5 musical theatre performances of
“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” with the musical theatre department at
Blinn College.
2004-2005 In its second year, the Chorus moved rehearsals to Brenham Middle School.
While growing numerically and artistically, choristers progressed to a new level of
musicianship by learning more difficult and challenging music. This achievement was
made possible in part due to the first week long day camp which was held in August at
the Blinn O’Donnell Center. Concerts included a Fall Concert in Blinn’s O’Donnell
Center entitled “You Can’t Stop the Beat” with guest, 13 year old violinist Lizzie Furuta,
who thrilled the audience with her technical prowess. In November, our three 8th grade
Chorus members participated in the televised 2004 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in
New York City with America Sings, and the Chorus participated in “A Charlie Brown
Christmas” at Blinn. Several concerts at Christmas, accompanied by the Brazos Valley
String Quartet and brass from Blinn College and Prairie View University, and additional
private functions, the Christmas Stroll Parade, and a trip to Festival Hill for “Amahl and
the Night Visitors” rounded out the holiday season. The Festival Hill Concert 2005 was
particularly meaningful to our community in that a Chorus of nearly 100 adult choir
members from many churches in the area was brought together to become the Brenham
Sacred Chorus for the event. The children performed 15 varied and challenging numbers
after which they were joined by the adult singers as they processed accompanied by
handbells through the aisles and onto the stage of the beautiful Festival Hill Concert Hall.
A 16 piece orchestra from the Brazos Valley Symphony and Blinn College accompanied
the concert, bringing the total of onstage performers close to 200. Additionally, the first
ever Bluebonnet Honor Choir Concert was held in late April at Brenham High School,
giving children grades 4-7, from Bellville, Burton, Navasota, and all of the Brenham
public and many private schools, the opportunity to get a taste of the choral experience.
BCC hosted the event, sang with the Honor Choir, and ended the event as the featured
Chorus. As if the year wasn’t busy enough already, the year ended with a performance
for America Sings in Houston at the George Ranch Historical Park in Richmond and a
June performance of the musical “Working” with the Blinn musical theatre department.

Brenham Children’s Chorus -1.3 2013-2014
2005-2006 The third year brought the beginning of a new group to the Brenham
Children’s Chorus. Brenham Broadway Kids began this year with a group of 16 singers
auditioned from the Chorus who committed to a Tuesday rehearsal in addition to the
regular Monday Chorus rehearsals. The Brenham Broadway Kids performed special
numbers for the Chorus concerts, performed for many private functions including the
Daughters of the American Revolution, the School Board and the Administration of
Brenham ISD, and a special serenade for Jennifer Berry, Miss America 2006, at Blue
Bell Creameries. BBK also presented “Godspell, Jr”, our first junior Broadway musical,
at Blinn’s O’Donnell Center to two full houses of parents and patrons who were
astounded by the professionalism exhibited by such young performers. Brenham
Broadway Kids brought a new and exciting dimension to Brenham Children’s Chorus.
BCC soared to new artistic heights in the third year. The year started off with another
week of camp at Blinn, after which the Fall Concert, “Why We Sing”, was an exciting
debut. In November, many of our choristers participated in 8 performances of the musical
“Pinnocchio” at Blinn College. Christmas brought a guest appearance with the Brazos
Valley Choral in the Bryan Civic Auditorium, and a visit from the Chamber Singers of
BVC for our Christmas concert at Brenham High School. A first ever over night rehearsal
retreat at Cathedral Oaks in Weimar, Texas was a wonderful time for bonding and
polishing our performance, not to mention an opportunity for some of our choir members
to spend a first night away from home! Festival Hill 2006 brought a return visit from
young violinist Lizzie Furuta and collaboration with the Houston Boychoir under the
direction of Carole Nelson and Holly Holt. The year ended with a command performance
for a private party with hundreds of guests and a private tour of Unity Theatre which,
according to the Artistic Director, brings the inevitable conclusion that Brenham
Children’s Chorus kids are dedicated, refined, informed, and poised children.
2006-2007 To prepare for another year of music and song, the Chorus began its 4th
year with a week of music camp at Blinn College. In October, the auditorium at Blinn’s
O’Donnell center was filled to capacity as the Chorus performed “The Elephant’s Child
and Other Stories”. Audiences were amazed and thrilled as the choristers sang and
danced in “Disney’s High School Musical Medley” and “Get America Singing”. In
addition, audience and chorus members were privileged to hear Jennifer Wise and Pam
Bennett Young perform selections from the Broadway musical “Wicked”. In December,
the Chorus invited the community to “Be a Child at Christmas!” at their Christmas
concert as they performed with orchestra members and adult vocal ensemble. Christmas
was in the air and in the hearts of all who attended. Spring brought the 2nd annual retreat
at Cathedral Oaks where choristers prepared for their spring concert at Festival Hill.
Now seasoned performers, the Brenham Broadway Kids performed “Honk! Jr.” in March
for school audiences, local clubs, and the public. Once again, audiences were amazed at
the talent and poise of these young performers. By popular demand, the Chorus

performed with the Brenham Sacred Chorus at Festival Hill on April 22, 2007. Included
in this inspirational afternoon of music, David Folchinsky, the winner of the Battle for the
Baton conducted the choruses along with our guest orchestra members from the Brazos
Valley Symphony and Blinn College in “The Star Spangled Banner”. It was an
inspirational afternoon of music! From June 18-24, 31 performing members of the
Chorus traveled beyond the state of Texas to tour in Wisconsin. During this premier tour,
these young singers performed at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral in Fond du Lac, in the
Lawrence Memorial Chapel in Appleton and at Bay View Lutheran Church in Sturgeon
Bay. After participating in a day long clinic, the choristers performed with over 200
children from 3 area school districts in a concert at Southern Door Community
Auditorium. It was a week long celebration of music, meeting singers from other parts of
the country, and sharing the gifts and talents of Brenham with Wisconsin. After returning
home to Brenham, the choir delighted audiences as they sang the “Blue Bell Song” as
part of the 100th Anniversary Celebration of Blue Bell Creameries. As the Chorus
approaches its 5th year, a newly formed choir, “Singenspiel”, will be offered for 7 and 8
year olds. The Chorus celebrates 4 years of musical artistry and is approaching this 5th
year with excitement, enthusiasm, and singing!
2007 – 2008 The Brenham Children’s Chorus celebrated the fifth anniversary year by
proving that they have become an established, community supported, entertaining and
artistically well-rounded organization. The year began with the relocation of rehearsal
space to the Community Education building, bringing the administrative and artistic
branches of the Chorus under the same roof at last. Summer Chorus camp kicked off the
use of the new space with our newest addition, Singenspiel, joining the older choristers
for the last day of camp. Singenspiel, a new group for 2nd and 3rd graders, is a training
choir based primarily in process over performance; hence, the name Singen-spiel
(German translation: sing - play). With many years of children’s elementary music
teaching experience, Karen Chance brought new depth to BCC by becoming the very first
director of Singenspiel. Joyce Whitehead, a well-known elementary educator in Brenham
ISD with many years experience in choral singing, joined Karen as her assistant.
The fall concert brought a new concept to BCC with the addition of a licensed musical,
Disney’s “Cinderella Kids”, which included BCC, Brenham Broadway Kids and
Singenspiel. Two fully costumed theatrical productions, overrun with singing mice,
played to sold out houses at Blinn College followed by the core cast taking the show to a
delighted audience at Brenham State School. The Christmas concert included challenging
choral music, a Charlie Brown Christmas tree decorated by Singenspiel (who sang a
portion of the concert while playing chimes) and the entire Chorus singing and dancing
with Santa Claus. The third annual retreat at Weimar was filled with “Treble Makers”
and added much needed rehearsal time to prepare for the end of year concerts. And then
there was...SEUSSICAL, JR.!!! The Brenham Broadway Kids third licensed musical was
received with so much enthusiasm that a third school performance was added, bringing

the total number of performances to five. Jennifer Patrick, who joined the artistic staff as
Theatre Arts Director, and her husband, Kevin Patrick, our set designer and technical
director, were a welcome addition to our artistic family, teaching us so much about
theatrical productions. The colorful, high-energy, musically challenging production, with
fantastic wacky costumes by our costumer, Jonni Hart, was enthusiastically received by
the community. BBK had the opportunity to reprise selections from Seussical Jr. at two
private parties in May and June.
To emphasize the point that BCC is more than strong enough to stand on its own two
feet, the Spring Concert at Festival Hill in April was a chance for the kids to sing without
a guest chorus. With an instrumental ensemble, the Chorus sang a wide variety of
artistically challenging music on their own. Singenspiel joined the chorus on stage and
Chorus alumni were invited to sing on the last number. The Battle for the Baton winner
this year was Lete Phillips, who delighted the children by telling them that they were “the
winners”. Guest artists were: Jeff Freeman, trombone; Lizzie Furuta, violin; and the
Prairie View A & M University Chamber Brass. The audience was thrilled to hear how
far our young musicians have come in five years.
Brenham Children’s Chorus continues to be grateful to the Brenham Independent School
District for providing shuttle bus transportation and rehearsal space for the Chorus from
its inception. We know that our strong beginning was made possible by gifts of this kind.
2008 – 2009: The 6th season of the Chorus began with the formation of Karussell Kids, a
new interactive music group for children in kindergarten and the 1st grade. Meeting after
school on the 3 public elementary school campuses, children participated in rhythm
activities, singing, and movement. With the addition of this group of young singers, the
Chorus now provides choral music education and performance opportunities for children
in grades k – 8.
When regular rehearsals began in August, the Community Education Building was once
again filled with the sounds and songs of children in Singenspiel and the Chorus. For the
2nd year, the fall concert included the performance of a licensed Disney musical for
children. The Blinn College O’Donnell Center stage was filled with cats, dogs, and jazz
as the children entertained 2 sold out audiences in “Aristocats Kids”. Throughout
October, the melodious sounds of the Chorus streamed through Washington and Brazos
counties, charming all who heard our young choristers perform. The Chorus provided the
musical entertainment for the Burton Prayer Breakfast at St. John’s United Methodist
Church. In addition, the staff and residents of the Brenham State School were thrilled
with the private performance of “Disney’s Aristocat’s Kids”. The tour choir was honored
to be invited to sing “Carmina Burana” with the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra and
the A & M University Century Singers at Rudder Auditorium, College Station. Under the

direction of Maestro Marcelo Busiki, the children amazed the 1700 plus audience with
their maturity, poise, and musical artistry. October was a busy month!
The Christmas Concert, “Celebrate with Joy”, proved to be the perfect addition to holiday
celebrations and provided great joy to all who attended. The audience was charmed by
the addition of our youngest singers, Karussell Kids, in a demonstration class and as they
sang and decorated the Christmas tree. Complete with a visit from Santa, the Brazos
Belles, and our own choristers playing hand chimes, the children were costumed in
costumes from different countries as they sang songs from lands across the world. “Felix
Navidad”! The tour choir welcomed the New Year as they sang the “Star Spangled
Banner” at the A & M Hockey game in January, and they enjoyed participating in the
inner tube races on the ice. Brrr!
In April, Brenham Broadway Kids presented their annual spring musical, “Once Upon a
Mattress” (“The Princess and the Pea”). Due to popular demand and packed audiences,
elementary aged children were able to attend one of 3 free school performances at the
Blinn College O’Donnell Center during the day. In addition, there were 3 evening
performances for the public. The Chorus and BBK continue to be grateful to Blinn
College and their drama department for their support and assistance which makes for a
truly professional show.
For the 6th year, the annual spring concert was held at the International Festival-Institute
in Round Top. The Chorus was joined on stage by the Brenham Sacred Chorus,
Singenspiel, and Karussell Kids for several patriotic selections. The afternoon was
complete with the announcement of the winner of the Battle for the Baton, Reverend Sam
Duree, who conducted the choruses and audience in the singing of the “Star Spangled
Banner”. It was an inspirational afternoon of music! These groups came together for an
encore presentation of patriotic music as guest performers at the Washington on the
Brazos 4th of July celebration. Happy Birthday America!
Reaching beyond the borders of Brenham, our choristers were the featured guest
performers at the Concerts on Carter Creek Series concert on May 1 at the First
Presbyterian Church in Bryan. The audience truly enjoyed their introduction to the talent
and musical maturity of these young singers—a real Brenham treasure!
Continuing to share their gift of music, the tour choir made up of singers in grades 5 - 8
traveled to Nashville, Tennessee and Ft. Campbell Military Base in Kentucky in June.
The Chorus staff and children hosted a music camp for the children of military families
on the base and they performed on the base, at the First Presbyterian Church in
Clarksville, at the Grand Ole Opry Plaza, and on several Nashville Radio Stations. Blue
Bell Creameries helped spread the word about the Chorus and their ice cream throughout
Nashville, Clarksville, and the surrounding area. The word of the outstanding reputation
and talent of our young singers is reaching beyond the borders of Brenham and Texas.

2009-2010: Following a successful music camp at Cathedral Oaks in Weimar, Texas,
members of BCC were hard at work preparing for the fall musical, Disney’s “Jungle
Book Kids”. The stage at Blinn College O’Donnell Center was transformed into a
colorful jungle, complete with wolves, bears, jaguars, tigers, and plants and bushes that
could sing and dance. Members of Singenspiel became bees and delighted the audience
with their singing and dancing.
Sounds of the jungle faded into preparations for the Christmas concert. Due to the
success of the Brenham High School Football team and their going to state, the Christmas
concert had to be rescheduled for January 11, 2010. Appropriately named, the “Memories
of Christmas” concert was indeed reminiscent of the holiday season. In spite of last
minute changes and alterations, the choristers were flexible and entertained the 450 plus
audience with the sights and sounds of Christmases past. Complete with carols and
Christmas favorites, Singenspiel and the Chorus sang of sleigh bells, Santa’s visit, and a
western “Christmas Jamboree”. One of the highlights of the concert was the Karussell
Kids portrayal of the Nativity Story accompanied by the Chorus.
In April, the Brenham Broadway Kids presented their production of Disney’s “Mulan Jr.”
at the O’Donnell Center, Blinn College. The stage and the singers took the audiences to a
far away time and place as they became warriors, dress makers, hairdressers, and
ancestors. Once again, children from the elementary schools were invited to attend 3 free
performances of the production during the day. In addition, there were 2 public
performances and audiences were amazed with the professionalism and talent of the show
and the singers.
On April 25, the Chorus and Singenspiel came together to sing in the 7th annual spring
concert at the International Festival-Institute in Round Top. Accompanied by the
orchestra, audience members enjoyed a wide variety of musical selections from the
Chorus and from Singenspiel. The youngest singers, Karussell Kids, shared the joyous
sounds of their music and movement. One of the highlights of the afternoon was the
announcement of the winner of the Battle for the Baton, Jim Ellison. Raising a record
amount of over $10,000.00, the 3 candidates conducted the choruses, audience, and
orchestra in the singing of the “Star Spangled Banner”. The 7th season of the Chorus was
complete and another success as these young choristers share their music with the
community.
2010-2011: The season began with BCC camp at our home away from home, Cathedral
Oaks in Weimar, and a first ever talent show presented by the campers, intensive musical
training and preparations for three challenging performances to come. The first exciting
challenge was a performance of Carmen at Earl Rudder Auditorium on the Texas A&M
campus with the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra, Brazos Valley Chorale and the

Texas A&M Century Singers and professional soloists, including some from the Met.
The Maestro, Dr. Marcelo Bussiki, came to Brenham to work with the tour choir on the
difficult French children's choruses from the opera. It was truly an experience of a
lifetime for our young singers. December brought collaboration with BVSO, this time
with the brass ensemble, the choir from Christ United Methodist Church of College
Station and James Faith, organist. This concert, held at Christ United Methodist Church
of College Station, presented our children ringing chimes, singing alone and with the
adult choir, and accompanied by piano, organ and brass, along with selections performed
by each of the other groups involved. Again, it was a glorious experience for our families
to see and hear their children surrounded by professional musicians and adult voices. It
was just a week later that our first Christmas concert at the Blinn O'Donnell Center found
the Chorus in a full staged and technically brilliant production of North Pole Musical
(Act 1), which included tap dancing reindeer, rapping elves, "chillin'" snowmen and a
stage full of dancing toys, many in detailed costumes by Jennifer Patrick's Blinn theatre
students. Act 2 took us to Bethlehem as a fully costumed BCC, Singenspiel and Karussell
Kids sang beautiful choral music as they presented Once Upon a Manger Still in story
and song.
Springtime brought a different version of our BBK musical and Spring Concert. This
time the entire BCC was the chorus for the presentation of 101 Dalmatians Kids at Blinn
O'Donnell Center, and the audience was then wowed in Act 2 with Cinemania! - Movie
Blockbusters in Concert, with technical work by Kevin Patrick's theatre arts classes from
Blinn College. Our young musicians showed 5 full house audiences that they can sing
beautiful music, tell a story, act, dance and do all of that with impressive facial
expression. Our school audiences were delighted at having the opportunity to see the full
Chorus on stage. June brought a tour choir of 24 singers and 10 adults to Georgia where
the group attended choral and theatre workshops and a musical theatre performance at
Columbus State University, attended workshops at Springer Opera House and performed
Cinemania! for a delighted and supportive audience of several hundred peers, presented a
music workshop for about 60 children in a church in Alabama and invited those children
to join them on stage for the final song in Cinemania! at a performance that evening, and
for pure entertainment got to see an amazing hail storm at an Atlanta Braves game,
visited the best wildlife safari park ever, climbed Stone Mountain and tasted over 80
different soft drinks at the Coca-Cola Museum in Atlanta. Of course, there was much
more, but what a way to end a wonderful season of song!
2011 2012: The 9th season of the Chorus officially began with our traditional overnight
camp at Cathedral Oaks in Weimar, Texas. For 3 days, our new and returning singers
participated in choral rehearsals, choreography, voice, and theatre classes, and fun! When
school started, the halls of the Community Ed Building were filled with music and
singing as our choristers returned to rehearsals. Singenspiel for 2nd and 3rd graders,
Karussell Kids for children in kindergarten and 1st grade, Brenham Broadway Kids, and
Chorus for singers in grades 4 – 8 continue to meet at the Community Ed Building on

Mondays and Tuesdays. We continue to appreciate our relationship with St. Paul’s
Christian Day School where our Wednesday class of Karussell Kids meets.
After a busy semester of rehearsals, costumes, and staging, the community was thrilled
with the Christmas Concert at Blinn College, “Santa’s Holiday Playlist”. In addition to
this musical presentation of dancing and singing of elves, reindeer, snowflakes, and toy
soldiers, singers performed traditional and non-traditional music from countries all over
the world.
In the spring, Brenham Broadway Kids performed in their production of “Flat Stanley
Jr.” for elementary school children in Brenham and the surrounding area and for the
public. In collaboration with the Blinn College Drama Department, the production was
complete with creative costumes, lighting, and special effects.
To celebrate the beginning of the 10th Anniversary year, the annual spring concert was
held at the International Festival-Institute, Round Top in May 2012. In addition to the
Children’s Chorus ensembles, the concert included the Brenham Sacred Chorus, the high
school alumni ensemble, and community orchestra members. To conclude the 9th year of
the Chorus, the singers in grades 4-8 performed the National Anthem at the season
opening game of the Brazos Valley Bombers Baseball and at Sea World in San Antonio.
2012-2013 The BCC season started off with a fantastic camp at Cathedral Oaks in
Weimar that consisted of classes in voice, sight singing, choreography, theatre arts, music
movement and a special class called "Nuts and Bolts", a Chorus orientation class. Camp
was filled with rehearsing, swimming, a talent show, huge group games and short flicks,
and lots of time for the experienced choristers to mentor the first year choristers.
The year began with a couple of performances for local organizations. Delta Kappa
Gamma, teacher society, chose BCC as their project for the year and supported the group
with special treat bags at concert times. In addition to performing for a Delta Kappa
Gamma meeting, the Chorus also performed for the Mission Brenham Dessert Fundraiser
in October.
Christmas brought two performances of “A Christmas Card to You" at Blinn O'Donnell
Center. The Chorus delighted full houses as they played chimes, violin and piano, and
sang a wide variety of songs including Broadway, songs from movie musicals, classics,
art songs and novelty songs with exciting choreography and staging. Under the direction
of their teachers, Kevin and Jennifer Patrick, Blinn students worked on costumes,
lighting, sound, set and all technical aspects of the show in a winning collaboration with
the Chorus.

"Big Bad Musical," the tale of the Big Bad Wolf as told by his "victims", was presented
by the Brenham Broadway Kids in the Spring to six full houses. Again, the collaboration
with Blinn theatre students made the technical aspect of the show even more dynamic and
engaging. The cast of characters entranced the crowd with three different endings which
were decided by the audience at the end of each performance.
Spring Concert found the Chorus at a different venue this year, the First Baptist Church
of Brenham. Two performances of a delightful combination of choral works from BCC
classics to classic rock and roll showed the growing skills of one of the strongest groups
of performers to ever grace a BCC stage, led by no less than twelve eighth graders who
had been a part of Chorus for many years. Afternoon Tunes, a new group of singers,
joined the BCC and Singenspiel on stage for a song. Afternoon Tunes is a pilot program
for young singers to get a small ten week taste of what it means to sing and play music
games together. This added class gave an afterschool group of kids from Krause
Elementary School the chance to participate and we hope to add more groups in the
future.
Singenspiel and Karussell Kids continue to grow strong musicians. We are seeing the
results of the good work going on in these two groups when young people move up to
BCC and are seriously ready to make music.
BCC Tour 2013 saw a charter bus full of singers and chaperones travel once again to
Springer Opera House in Columbus, Georgia where they wowed the students of the
Springer summer youth theatre camp. On to Orlando, Florida where they participated in a
Disney Performing Arts workshop that involved working with experienced Disney artists
behind the scenes recording a Lion King Medley, learning to do voice over work,
learning choreography and coming back with a DVD of their voices recorded on a Disney
video. Finally, a twenty minute performance of fully choreographed music at Downtown
Disney to an audience that gave a rousing standing ovation and four days of non-stop
Disney parks brought the tour to a high that will stay with the participants for a long time.
Just as the 2012-13 began, it ended with an additional summer performance for the
community. The Disney Tour Choir performed at the Germania annual board of
directors’ conference to conclude another successful year of music.

REHEARSAL AND PERFORMANCE INFORMATION
Brenham Children’s Chorus -3.1- 2013-2014
Regular rehearsal days, times, and locations are announced as they become available.
Extra rehearsals may be called by the Artistic Director at her discretion. During the
school year, rehearsals are held once a week at the Community Education Building. At
times, especially right before a performance or when choreography must be learned and
practiced, it is necessary to schedule extra rehearsals.
The Brenham Independent School District schedule is used to determine when practices
will not be scheduled because of holidays. There will be no rehearsal on scheduled BISD
holidays or waiver days. The rehearsal schedule is determined by the Artistic Director.
All performance venues are approved by the Board of Trustees and the Artistic Director.
An effort is made to not only have concerts in the Brenham area, but to offer the Chorus
opportunities for travel and performing outside the local community.
This year, the Chorus Concerts and Brenham Broadway Kids Musical will take place at
the Blinn College W.W. O’Donnell Center for the Performing Arts:
* Christmas concerts: Friday, December 13, 2013 at 7:00 pm

IV.
RULES AND GUIDELINES
Brenham Children’s Chorus -4.1- 2013-2014
Rehearsals
During Chorus rehearsals, the choristers are involved in learning new music and performance
skills under the direction of the artistic staff. To maintain this learning atmosphere and encourage
student concentration, we ask that parents attend rehearsals only if they are involved with
committee work that pertains to the rehearsal. Parental involvement in the Chorus is encouraged
through participation on committees, chaperoning, or other Chorus activities. Due to the
limitations of the rehearsal space, we are unable to offer a waiting area for parents. Parents are
encouraged to contact the office staff at 979-277-3897 with questions or concerns regarding
attendance, excused absences, uniforms, tuition payments, or schedules.
Chorus Members and Parents
It is expected that the following guidelines will be adhered to:
1. Arrive in plenty of time to pick up new music and memos.
Mrs. Young’s Motto: If you’re early, you’re on time.
If you’re on time, you’re late.
If you’re late - you’re in big trouble, Mister!
2. Please pick up your child promptly at the conclusion of the rehearsal. If you are late, your
child will never be left alone; however, you will be delaying the departure of a BCC staff
member or chaperone that has other commitments. Repeated tardiness in drop-off or
pick-up will result in dismissal from the Chorus.
3. Please plan doctor’s appointments, dentist appointments, etc. on a non-rehearsal day and
do not pick your child up early from rehearsal. Children should remain for the entire
rehearsal. When children leave the rehearsal early, they miss important preparation time
and it is very distracting to the Chorus and staff.
4. Bring all music to all rehearsals in your music folder unless told otherwise.
IF YOU DO NOT BRING YOUR MUSIC TO REHEARSAL, A FINE OF $1.00 WILL
BE COLLECTED.
5. Use restroom facilities before rehearsal since no breaks are given during regular
rehearsals.
6. Carefully collect all newsletters or memos that are handed out and deliver them to
your parent immediately after rehearsal. It is your responsibility to stay informed.
7. Gum chewing is not allowed at rehearsal, performances, or on tours. Water bottles are
allowed and encouraged. Choristers are responsible for disposing of trash.
IV.
RULES AND GUIDELINES
Brenham Children’s Chorus -4.2- 2013-2014
8. At all times show respect for each other, parent volunteers, chaperones, and the facilities.
Pay attention to the Musical Directors and Chaperones at all times, and do not talk or in
any way distract other Chorus members.
9. Behavior at any BCC rehearsal or performance should reflect maturity, respect, and
courtesy. Leave your outside voices outside.
10. No personal isolation devices (portable music players, headphones, iPods, Gameboys,
cell phones, etc.) are allowed at any rehearsal, performance, or on any Chorus trip.
11. If, for any reason, a child cannot actively participate in a rehearsal, he/she should bring a
written note and observe quietly and attentively. This will not be counted as an absence.
12. Space does not permit parents or other visitors to attend any rehearsals, unless invited by
the staff to assist with organizational matters. Choristers are often inhibited and distracted
by such visitors.
13. A POSITIVE ATTITUDE FROM CHORUS MEMBERS AND PARENTS IS A MUST!
A POSITIVE ATTITUDE FROM THE CHORUS STAFF IS A GIVEN!
A Message from the Artistic Director:
Singers: 1. Be on time.
2. Come prepared.
3. Use restroom before rehearsal.
4. Take home all information.
5. No gums or sodas at rehearsal.
Yes, to water bottles.
6. Respect.
Parents:
Rehearsals are very important. Please save Tuesdays for Chorus rehearsal and
Mondays for Singenspiel rehearsal. This is when we are building self discipline,
musicianship, respect for others, and a strong work ethic. Training takes place at
rehearsal. While we are having fun, we are building character. Please respect our
start and finish times and make every effort for your child to be on time and stay
until the end of rehearsal. In addition, please consult the monthly take home
calendar for special rehearsals, concert information, and other Chorus activities.
Parents: 1. Don’t be a stage mom (or dad).
2. Arrive on time.
3. Make sure child is prepared: practices at home, has folder, gets adequate
rest the night before a rehearsal.
IV.
RULES AND GUIDELINES
Brenham Children’s Chorus -4.3- 2013-2014
4. Pick up on time.
5. Ask for memos after every rehearsal.
Attendance
The quest for artistic excellence requires a high level of commitment. Therefore, the Chorus
maintains high expectations for attendance.
While we encourage perfect attendance, choristers are allowed two (2) weekday absences from rehearsal per semester (August to December, and January to May.) These absences are excused, but still considered an absence. Awards are given at the end of the year for perfect attendance. A chorister is tardy 10 minutes after the rehearsal start time. Choristers should plan to
attend on time and remain for the entire rehearsal. Excessive tardiness and leaving rehearsal
excessively early will be counted as an absence.
At any time if the Artistic Director feels that the child does not adequately know the music,
choreography, or stage direction, the staff has the right to pull the Chorus member from
upcoming concerts.
While the BCC commitment is extensive, and the seriousness of that commitment is reflected in
our attendance policy, BCC encourages all choristers to participate in their school and religious
music programs. Furthermore, absences for graded school or worship performances are
considered excused absences, but are still recorded as absences. Any absences must be reported
in advance to the Chorus office in writing, sent by e-mail, or by phone at 979-277-3897. Please
do not contact the Artistic Director regarding absences. The Chorus office will notify her of
absences.
The Chorus calendar is set early in the year. Concerts, rehearsals, retreats, and trips are added to
the calendar as soon as they become known and approved. It is the responsibility of the parents
to be aware of these scheduled dates. Sports and other extracurricular events are not considered
excused absences.
The following pertains to all absences:
All absences are to have written, emailed, or called excuses turned in to the Chorus
office.
The BCC office must be informed of all absences prior to a rehearsal or performance. It
is not the responsibility of the BCC office to contact a family after an absence. The
Chorus member family must contact the office.
→ Families who believe that they have special circumstances that will result in three or
more absences should request a personal conference with the Administrative Manager
IV.
RULES AND GUIDELINES
Brenham Children’s Chorus -4.4- 2013-2014
Required Performances
All Chorus performances are required. BCC members are strongly encouraged, but not required
to attend BBK productions.
Resignation/Dismissal
Chorus members’ contracts are for the entire year. The Artistic Director feels very strongly that
choristers should be committed to finish what they start.
However, if a chorister is dismissed or must leave the Chorus for any reason, the Chorus office
must be notified and an exit interview form should be completed. All music, practice CDs,
folder, and all wardrobe attire must be returned to the Chorus office, clean and in good repair
within two weeks of departure from the Chorus.
There will be no reimbursement for any fees, costs or expenses as a result of a dismissal of a
performing member by the Chorus. The Board of Directors may in its sole discretion refund
some or part of the tuition paid in case of relocation.
Memos
The Brenham Children’s Chorus is a very active organization. It is essential that Chorus
members and parents carefully read the parent newsletters and memos that are given out
at rehearsals, mailed, or posted on the website. If you are absent from rehearsal, contact the
Chorus office immediately to find out if music, a parent newsletter or memo was distributed.
Chorus members are responsible for updating their own rehearsal/performance schedules.
We always pass out detailed information to the children prior to events. Please refer to these
memos for arrival and dismissal times, food, uniforms, etc. for each event. All of this
information is given to the children at the rehearsals prior to performances. If you need
clarification or more information, please contact other Chorus families or contact the BCC
office, 979-277-3897.
Music
An expanding file folder and music will be issued to each member of the Chorus. ALL music is
the property of BCC. Additional music is assigned from time to time during the year. It is the
responsibility of the Chorus member to take good care of the music and the folder! Music is
very costly and difficult to replace. All music must be turned in by the last rehearsal in
December and again at the last rehearsal in May. If music or folder are lost, irreparably

RULES AND GUIDELINES

damaged, or not returned, an additional fee will be charged to cover replacement costs. (Music
replacement fee is a minimum of $3.00/copy).
Performance
Performances require the very best in conduct, appearance, and musicianship.
1. Always eat a nutritious meal and get plenty of rest before a concert. Avoid milk products.
2. Each performance has a "call time" when choir members are to arrive. Since all of our
performances vary as to location and stage set-up, any child arriving later than 15
minutes after "call time" might not be permitted to perform.
3. All Chorus members must have proper wardrobe attire and appearance. Failure to comply
with uniform and appearance requirements will prevent a Chorus member from leaving
on the bus with the Chorus on trips in or out of town and/or participating in the event.
Only emergency repairs will be made to the uniform.
Appearance Requirements: Hair: Girls: For ALL performances, hair must be pulled back totally off the face.
Clips or a band matching the hair color may be worn. (no sparkles
or glitter, please)
Boys: Neat, combed hair, OFF THE FACE for all performances
Wardrobe Committee members will be at all performances to assist with Chorus
members' hair. Any choristers who do not abide by the above hair rules will receive a
“re-do” prior to performance or will be excluded from performing.
4. Jewelry – earrings (other than studs), necklaces and watches are not permitted during
performances. No polish on nails, perfumes or scents other than deodorant, extreme
makeup, or accessories.
5. Good personal hygiene is a must for all Chorus members. Deodorant, clean teeth, and
clean hair is always expected at any Chorus event.
6. Conduct yourself at all times in a calm, polite, professional manner. Give your undivided
attention to the Artistic Directors, Chaperone, or person in charge at all times.
7. Parents are not to attend private performances unless invited to attend. Some of our
performances for the community are closed events, yet several are open to the public.
There is a fee for tickets to most of our concerts. Tickets purchased for BCC annual
concerts are non-refundable. The sale of our concerts tickets helps cover the high cost of
producing those concerts. In addition to tickets that you buy for your own family, we
expect you to sell tickets to co-workers, neighbors, friends, church members, and anyone
IV.
RULES AND GUIDELINES
Brenham Children’s Chorus -4.6- 2013-2014
else who might enjoy our concerts. There’s nothing more motivating to the Chorus than a
full house. Every effort must be made to fill what would otherwise be empty seats.
8. When parents are invited to attend special concerts, they should not interfere with the
BCC staff, Artistic Staff, chaperones, or other performance personnel, including standing
and talking in the concert hall during the rehearsal before the doors are open to the
public. This is when concentration is of the utmost importance and any noise, talking, or
distractions interfere with the concentration of both the choristers and the Artistic
Directors. Any committee work that takes place at this time should be done very quietly.
Security
The Chorus staff is very concerned about the welfare of your child. We will make certain that
the choristers are adequately supervised, but please note that the children are in the direct care
and supervision of the staff when they sign in at the Community Ed building. With the help of
chaperones, parents are responsible for ensuring that the children arrive safely to their vehicle
after leaving the rehearsal. The staff and parent chaperones will do everything possible to make
drop off and pick up as smooth and safe as possible, but there is no substitute for parents
ensuring that children arrive in the rehearsal room safely and on time and return to their cars
afterwards. Directions from the chaperones must be followed at all times.
Supervision of Choristers
Whenever and wherever Brenham Children’s Chorus gathers to rehearse or perform on stage, the
choristers are under the supervision of the Artistic Staff. When the Chorus is in transit, touring,
waiting, eating, moving, in a holding area, or backstage before or after a rehearsal or concert, the
choristers are under the direct supervision of the adult chaperones. The children are expected to
respond appropriately and immediately to all directions from the Artistic Staff and adult
chaperones. The Chorus is committed to providing the appropriate number of chaperones at each
rehearsal and performance. Because the safety of your child and every child in the Chorus is one
of main concern, the Artistic Directors defer to the Chaperones with regard to dismissal of the
children or permission to leave the group for any reason. Parents are expected to defer to the
chaperones by following the safety rules, including the permission to leave the group procedure,
and sign-in/sign-out rules. Parents are expected to discuss and reinforce these concepts with their
child. Children in non-compliance will be dismissed from the Chorus. Before and after all
performances and bus trips, choristers will be signed in and out by a parent. Permission to leave
with someone other than a parent must be requested ahead of time by written note, email, or
phone call to the office, and be communicated to the chaperone in charge. Last minute
arrangements are discouraged.

WARDROBE/UNIFORM
Brenham Children’s Chorus -5.1- 2013-2014
Wardrobe
Just as the ensemble sound is important, so is the ensemble appearance. A well-groomed,
neat ensemble is essential for a truly professional and artistic experience.
Because of the generosity of our patrons, we are able to provide the wardrobe without
asking parents to purchase these items. Concert attire provided to you by BCC is the
property of the BCC. These outfits are costly to replace. You are expected to take
extreme care in the use of these outfits. They are not to be worn for any reason other than
for BCC performances and events. At the end of the Chorus year, uniforms should be
cleaned, pressed, on a hanger, and turned in to the Chorus office. The Chorus parent will
be held financially responsible for the loaned outfits. When turning in your child’s
uniform, please attach his/her name!
Sometimes the Chorus will wear items other than those included in the casual uniform
wardrobe. Occasionally they will be asked to wear choir t-shirts instead of polo shirts or
blue jeans instead of slacks for their performances. The uniform requirements will always
be made clear either by newsletter, memo, or during rehearsals prior to the performance.
See page 4.5(under Performance) for hair and general appearance requirements.

Parents’ Role in Fundraising
Brenham Children’s Chorus -8.1- 2013 - 2014
WHY DOES THE CHORUS NEED TO RAISE MONEY?
About 1/3 of the operating budget comes from parents' tuition payments and the remainder comes from fundraising efforts. Without an effective fundraising effort, the activities of the Chorus will be limited, and the Chorus will not be able to operate as effectively.
HOW DO WE RAISE MONEY?
We have several efforts, including:
Direct mailing to individuals (previous donors, music people, parents, and "friends" of the Chorus)
Proposals to foundations, civic organizations, music societies and corporations.
Grant requests to local, state, and federal organizations
Development of and support for a major fundraiser every year through the Board of Trustees
Sale of tickets to our own concerts
WHAT SPECIFICALLY CAN PARENTS DO?
In short, a lot! Specifically, parents can:
For the individual fundraising effort: Provide us with a list of people that you believe might make a donation to the
Chorus Write a personal note to those people on the fundraising material we send them
(this significantly improves our success rate). Make a (tax deductible) donation yourself (if you make a donation, check to see if
your employer will match it). Arrange for Chorus representatives to meet any individuals you know who are in
a position to make a major donation. Encourage your employer to purchase an ad for our concert programs. If you own your own business, consider purchasing an ad.
For our proposals to organizations that fund the arts:
If you have contacts in these organizations, help arrange a meeting between Chorus and the organization's representatives.
If you think the company you work for may be interested in supporting us, put us in touch with the appropriate company representative.
For our concerts:
In addition to the tickets you buy for your own family, sell tickets to people you know who would enjoy watching the Chorus perform. Filling what would otherwise be empty seats adds greatly to our revenue after expenses.
Remember that we are a 501(c)(3) organization. All donations are tax exempt.
