I find the hand ax, one of the oldest and longest-used tools, a metaphor for my approach to graphic design. Even as digital media is dominant, it is not the tool that is important but the result. I take an “Occam’s Razor” approach to design, meaning simple is almost always better. That is not to say that complexity has no place in good design but that complexity is the result of necessity rather than style. The bulk of my design experience is in print although I apply the same principles in all my creative endeavors. My wife and I founded Open Source Gallery in 2008 in a tiny storefront adjacent the brownstone we live in with our three young sons. I also conceptualized, designed and am owner of Der Kommissar, a well-loved Austrian bar and grill.

I began working for Kiyoshi Kanai Incorporated right after graduate school in 1996. I had, at that point, very little “design” experience as my studies had been focused in fine arts. I started as an assistant/apprentice working under and with Kiyoshi, another designer, and a produc-tion designer. we did many other projects but I really found my sense of style while designing American craft magazine. As my skills improved and responsibilities grew, the other designers and production people became unnecessary as it was more expediant to do it by myself. I just produced the magazine with Kiyoshi or on my own when Kiyoshi was absent. As associate art director, I did everything from photo editing to color corrections (also all post production work of the images chosen for the magazine). cover design, page layout, typesetting, house ads, and the press-ready mechanicals, lead up to the press okays, which i did in Strasburg, virginia every other month. There was not an aspect of the magazine’s design or production that I did not have a hand in. The following pages show a few of the layouts from the magazine.

I began working on ISSEy MIyAKE ads, sale cards, signage, stationary etc. while at Kiyoshi Kanai Inc. Kiyoshi, Issey and the late Eiko Ishioka studied together at Tokyo university. Of all the interesting characters, parties and events that these projects often entailed, the most fascinat-ing experience was the chance to work with the great Irving penn. At left is an example of the ad campaign that ran for years with Irving providing a picture and we providing the typesetting and print-ready mechanical for magazine production. what may seem a simple job was not. Mr. penn was about as exacting a man as you could imagine. Everything had to be perfect. bringing over these simple mechanicals to his studio was nerve-racking, yet exhilirating when he agreed that, yes, this is perfect. following are some designs for invitations, cards and stationary.

The following pages show some samples of artist’s catalogs I’ve put together. I take special pride in the catalog on this spread. Jacob just wandered into my gallery one day and asked if I could pay him a studio visit. when I got there I took one look at his brushtroke paintings and asked him why he wasn’t painting directly on the wall. I gave him a show to do just that (which is on the cover at left). This show helped him get picked up by a major chelsea gallery.

Der Kommissar offers a brooklyn twist on an Austrian institution, the würstelstand. Sausage stands in vienna are far more than glorified hotdog carts, they are the nexus of food culture. Rather than taking their food to go, patrons tend to hang around, have a beer, and interact so-cially. featuring a menu of artisanal Austrian-style sausages, eight draft beers, and an extensive selection of schnaps, Der Kommissar brings a little bit of vienna to 5th Ave.

The Open Source mission is to share conceptually-driven art with our community and beyond by using contemporary initiatives to engage our peers, both adults and children, and, in turn, find inspiration in the community. Open Source Gallery provides a space for artists and other creative thinkers to share ideas with the public in a structured environment, offering outlets such as creative workshops and lectures to engage the wider community. Open Source supports a cross-disciplinary and participatory approach to art and art-making as a way to promote artis-tic dialogue and critical commentary.
