Napoleon Scenic Byway to SpaceAlthough a short drive, the Napolean byway takes visitors on an interesting tour of the now extinct town that is laced with scenic beauty. Napoleon’s first European settlement was in 1767 by Jean Claude Favre, and the area was later owned by his son, Simon Favre.
THE GULF COAST SCENIC BYWAYS
The NASA Scenic Byway to Space The NASA Scenic Byway to Space is the beginning point of the journey, which encompasses more than 30 miles of land inside the Buffer Zone surrounding John C. Stennis Space Center. INFINITY Science Center is one of Mississippi’s newest attractions.
Pearlington Scenic Byway to SpaceLocated on the Old Spanish Trail, the byway stretches from the town of Pearlington and intersects Mississippi 607. Along the way, visitors can view pine plantations and an abundance of deer. One unique feature along the byway is a mid-1900s highway rest area.
Santa Rosa Scenic Byway to SpaceThe jewel of the Santa Rosa Scenic Byway is McLeod Park, which was created under the President Nixon initiative to convert federal land to state parks. It’s a recreational haven and is full of camping sites, pavilions, boat launches, nature trails, and swimming areas.
Westonia Scenic Byway to SpaceWestonia was a sawmill town named for Horatio Weston. The drive on this scenic byway provides a spectacular view of thousands of acres of pine plantation with sporadic hardwood trees, including live oaks. This byway honors those families who gave up their homes to make way for space exploration.

INFINITY Science Center is all about the future: The promise of space, ocean and earth exploration and the next generation of scientists, engineers and
mathematicians who will help lead the way on those missions.
Located on Interstate 10 at the south entrance to NASA’s Stennis Space Center, INFINITY features large outdoor exhibits near the entrance to the exhibit hall.
Visitors can get close-up views of the F-1 rocket engine, a tsunami buoy, and a boat used to train U.S. Navy Seals in nearby waterways.
Inside the gleaming two-story center, visitors will learn about the history of exploration in the Great Nations Dare to Explore exhibit, and journey through Science on a Sphere in an immersive theater showing animated views of Earth, the sun and Mars.
&INFINITY beyond
LEARN MORE about INFINITY Science Center: www.visitinfinity.com
The nearby Hurricane Simulator kicks up winds of 78 miles per hour for a stormy experience and the Omega Flight Simulator provides a high-tech space travel thrill ride. The Space Gallery showcases the evolution of NASA’s spacecraft right up to today. And there’s a full-scale International Space Station module, complete with a video tour by an astronaut.
As exciting as all the exhibits are now, the best is yet to come. INFINITY’s expansion plans will kick into high gear when funds are released to fabricate new indoor and outdoor exhibits and interpretive centers at INFINITY and the surrounding area.
Interactive labs will be added to the Earth Gallery to teach visitors of all ages the importance of the Gulf Coast’s ecosystem. Other major enhancements will allow researchers (and visitors) to monitor a Living Shoreline project in Hancock County, and a new nature trail will highlight the fragile nature of the wetlands area.
A visit to INFINITY also includes a guided behind-the-scenes tour of nearby Stennis Space Center and then have lunch at the INFINITY Café, a casual and delicious dining experience that is absolutely out of this world.
Visit the INFINITY Gift Shop for everything you need to bring smiles to the faces of the explorers in your life — no matter the age!

Trip through history provides a slower pace
Hancock County Historic Courthouse

I f you want to really take in Old Town Bay St. Louis, park the car
and stroll or pedal your way through some of the most interesting history in South Mississippi.
Getting around Old Town is easy, enjoyable and entertaining. Walking is favored by the crowds who come every month for the Second Saturday Art Walks, when merchants host an after-hours party with live music.
The compact area is filled with historic landmarks and even some Hollywood glamour.
For a little perspective before you start your self-guided tour, consider that the original settlement that is now Bay St. Louis was established by French explorers in
1699 and the city was incorporated in 1818. That long history has given this community a unique character with plenty of stories to tell. And much of the story of Bay St. Louis is told through its buildings, including those found along Main Street.
Before starting your walking or biking tour, visit the Chamber of Commerce (111 Court St. in Old Town Bay St. Louis) or the Historic Train Depot (1928 Depot Way) to pick up a 10-page brochure with a map and information on 24 sites found along the self-guided tour. The Chamber is also headquarters to the Gulf
Coast Scenic Byways, a network of specially organized trails developed for you to enjoy a 13-mile stretch of beachfront and 30 miles of roadways in the Stennis Space Center Buffer Zone.
The Hancock County bank (100 South Beach Blvd. at Main) opened in 1899, with assets of about $18,000. The bank is now operating throughout the Gulf South. This original branch is the oldest two-story building in the city. Adjacent to the bank (102 South Beach Boulevard) is a tiny park with a life-sized bronze statue of French explorer Bienville commemorating the city’s founding more than 300 years ago.
A few steps down Main Street is the Masonic Temple (125 Main St.), a handsome Neo-classical Revival structure built in 1925 by a local businessman.
Nearby on the opposite side of the street is the Angelone House (136 Main St.), built as a family home in the 1890s in the Bungalow cottage style with gabled roof and an undercut gallery. It now is home to a retail shop.
Two striking buildings side by side are the Hancock County Courthouse and the Methodist Church. The courthouse (150 Main St.) was completed in 1911 and contains the original jail.
The Neo-Classical Revival building is the tallest in Old Town and is a designated state landmark. The Main Street United Methodist Church (160 Main St.) dates back to 1895 and is a picturesque example of Carpenter Gothic Architecture.
More noteworthy buildings, homes and shops await visitors on their stroll or bike ride down Main Street and along the side streets. Among the not-to-be-missed stops is the Historic Train Depot (1929 Depot Way), a two-story Mission style building from 1929.
Inside the Depot, you will find a visitor’s center, the Mardi Gras Museum and Alice Moseley Folk Art Museum.
Aside from its decades of service to passengers, the depot had a starring role in the 1965 movie “This Property is Condemned” starring Natalie Wood and Robert Redford. Nearby is the Queen Anne style building (398 Blaize Ave.) that was used in the movie as the boarding house. It’s now home to the award-winning Bay St. Louis Little Theater.

SHOPPING
Hancock Today18
Shopping is a unique experience
Shopping in Hancock County is as much an experience as a necessity, thanks to the variety of merchandise in the charming shops
and galleries. Fine antiques, handmade furniture, jewelry crafted by local artisans, casual and upscale clothing plus local artwork and accessories for the home are all here.
Owner Brennan Marlowe opened Green Canyon Outfitters in the French Settlement building on South Beach Boulevard in 2013 to offer customers the upscale apparel, sunglasses and other merchandise they had been selling online.
“We had the idea and it just took off,” he says. “We went from selling two products to more than 200,000 online.”
Marlowe says the store’s name comes from the Green Canyon in the Gulf where he caught a 350-plus pound marlin on a deep-sea fishing trip when he was a college student. The store draws people from all over the country visiting Hancock County, and Marlowe says he often refers customers to other local shops. “I want this store to drive sales to others in the community,” he says.
Among the one-of-a-kind shops in an area known for its unique stores and products is Built of Barnwood (125A Main St.). Owner Bob Somerhalder uses reclaimed wood and other materials to make home furnishings, artwork and accent pieces for the home.
If his last name sounds familiar, you may know his actor brother Ian, who played Boone Carlyle in the television series “Lost” and stars as Damon Salvatore in the TV drama “The Vampire Diaries.” The creative brothers consider Built of Barnwood a collaborative effort to make contemporary products using vintage wood.
While you’re shopping, check out the commercial areas in Diamondhead, just off Interstate 10; in Waveland along the Highway 90/603 corridor; and in the Kiln along
the Mississippi 603 corridor. Be sure to stop at Treasures of the Bay in Waveland (1804 Nicholson Ave., Waveland) to browse for a unique gift. Find specialty candles and soaps here.
In Diamondhead, Goody’s, at 4402 E. Aloha Drive, specializes in popular apparel, footwear and housewares.
You’ll be hard pressed to find another place as unique as Da Swamp Shack at Dempsey’s Restaurant (6208 Kiln-DeLisle Road) in the Kiln. It touts itself as a cultural gifts store, which means you’ll find a lot of Mississippi-made niceties, such as Dempsey’s Seafood and Steak Breading Mix, as well as burlap flags and other memorabilia. After indulging in the food and shopping there, you may want to take home one of the “I Gotta Little Cajun in My Soul” signs.

The party doesn’t stop when the sun
goes down
W hen the sun tips its hat to nightlife, entertainment kicks up at country and yacht clubs, cafes, casinos and other venues.
Musical entertainment is always on tap at Hollywood Casino in Bay St. Louis and Silver Slipper Casino on the beach near Waveland. Along with the music and the non-stop gaming, the casinos offer their guests delicious food in a fun atmosphere.
Diamondhead’s popular Country Club, conveniently located just off Interstate 10, welcomes guests for a memorable meal at lunch, dinner and Sunday Brunch. The club’s 19th Hole Bar & Grill adjacent to the pro shop offers karaoke on Thursday nights and live entertainment and dancing on Friday nights.
Blues fans have a special treat in store when they come for performances at the historic 100 Men Hall in Bay St. Louis. Part of the legendary Blues Trail, this rare venue continues to put the spotlight on local and regional musicians and singers. The shows make for an unforgettable evening.
The Mockingbird Café has made a tradition of presenting musical entertainment in Old Town Bay St. Louis. When the weather’s right, crowds gather in front of the courtyard stage to enjoy the outdoor show and refreshments from the café menu.
There is a lot of homegrown musical talent to enjoy in Hancock County. One standout is Waveland’s Michael Grimm, who captured the 2010 America’s Got Talent competition. He returns to perform for hometown fans on special occasions.

Pull up to the table, the seafood is fresh
Hancock County is all about gulf-fresh seafood. While you always can get a good burger or steak, the shrimp, crabs, crawfish, oysters and fish here are among the best
you’ll find anywhere. Fresh seafood, much of it caught by Coast fishermen, shows
up prominently on local menus featuring specialties like oyster poboys, seafood gumbo, fried soft-shell crabs, boiled crawfish and blackened shrimp.
Fishermen harvest some of the best seafood in the world from the rich local waters of the Mississippi Sound, the Bay of St. Louis and the Pearl River. Award-winning chefs prepare dishes from traditional recipes and also put their own culinary signature on their menus.
A trio of restaurants on the beachfront in Bay St. Louis serves seafood and other specialties that keep all three packed with hungry diners.
Trapani’s Eatery (116 North Beach Blvd.) celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2014. The local favorite is known for its fresh seafood and New Orleans dishes like seafood gumbo and shrimp étouffée. From the fish logo on the menu to the upstairs bar named The Blue Marlin, you know they’re serious about seafood at Trapani’s.
Next door, 200 North Beach is a favorite for its crab-cakes starter, and Bayou Tortellini. Can’t make up your mind? Go for the generous seafood platters, fried or grilled, featuring a taste of it all: shrimp, soft-shell crab, trout and more. Save room for Miss Ann’s pecan pie.
Across Beach Boulevard is The Blind Tiger (119 North Beach Blvd.), a new beachy bar with grilled seafood served inside and outside on the deck. The crowds love the burgers and hand-cut fries, grilled oysters, fresh fish sandwiches and fish tacos.
You’ll find a great meal at Dempsey’s Seafood & Steak Restaurant and The Deli. Both are delicious family-style restaurants in the Kiln.
Other places to try include Lil Joe’s Seafood and More (128 Blaize Ave., Bay St. Louis), The West End Restaurant (635 Highway 90, Waveland), and Harbor House Steamer (3410 Yacht Club Circle, Diamondhead).
And those are just a few of the great places to discover and come back to again and again.

McLeod canoers
If you want to be closer to nature, there are two parks that will help you get there. Campers and anyone who enjoys the outdoors will want to
visit McLeod Park and Buccaneer State Park. Both parks have recently undergone improvements to make them even more attractive for day visits and overnight stays.
On the beachfront in Waveland, Buccaneer State Park is one of the most visited state parks in Mississippi. The park reopened in 2013 after extensive redevelopment. The park now has 206 premium campsites with full amenities plus another 70 campsites overlooking the Gulf of Mexico that offer water and electricity. Primitive camping is available at 25 sites in a wooded area near Grand Bayou.
The Buccaneer Bay Waterpark, located on 4.5 acres overlooking the Gulf, offers summertime fun in the Pirate’s Lagoon wave pool, two giant waterslides and the kiddie pool.
Three pavilions are available for family reunions, birthday parties and company outings.
Buccaneer also offers an activities center, a seasonal camp store and an 18-hole disc golf course, as well as the 1.8-mile Pirate’s Alley Nature Trail, day-use picnic area and large playground.
McLeod Park is a 324-acre RV park with frontage on the Jourdan River on the Santa Rosa Scenic Byway. There are 84 campsites with electrical hookups, two pavilions available for
rental, three boat launches, canoes for rent and a splash pad for children. McLeod also features a mile-and-a-half nature trail. The park hosts frequent gatherings for barbecue cook-offs and fishing tournaments. The new ranger station recently opened, giving the park new offices, a meeting room and a camp store with public restrooms.
Plans call for full sewer hook-ups at the campsites in the spring of 2015 and an additional 40 campsites for RVs in the next year.
McLeod is so popular with campers that its facilities get booked up early in the year for most holidays.

The fishing is world-class herePhotography courtesy of Capt. Sonny Schindler, Shore Thing Charters
The great fishing in Hancock County is one of the better-kept secrets in the Gulf of Mexico. Combine a weekend of world-class inshore fishing with two casinos, a water
park, golf courses, white sand beaches, shopping and some of the best seafood restaurants on the planet and you’re likely to be hooked.
Fish are plentiful in Hancock County’s bayous, rivers and bays. Charter boats are available for year-round deep sea fishing, or simply cast your line from a pier or the shore. Rivers and two large bays provide great brackish-water fishing.
Even though light-tackle fishing can be done right off the 13 miles of scenic beaches, most anglers opt to run to the barrier islands, says Capt. Sonny Schindler of Shore Thing Charters (www.shorethingcharters.com).

World-class speckled trout and redfishing can be enjoyed year-round. Many fishermen jump across to the islands for the incredible wade fishing over the endless underwater grass beds. Massive trout and redfish can be fooled on the early-morning top-water bite.
A light tackle fisherman’s paradise can be enjoyed in the spring and fall. The trout seem to bite on every cast on live and artificial bait. Drag-punishing bull reds usually can be found lurking not too far from the marsh as well.
Summertime brings epic numbers of tripletail. The endless number of channel markers, crab-trap buoys and other floating structures keep these tasty treats around all summer long.
Many anglers come just to do battle with hard-fighting sharks that patrol the deeper channels. Some days, it is impossible to get more than two baits out in the feeding frenzy.
Fall and winter bring stellar redfishing in the marshes. On calm, clear days, the sight-fishing opportunities are second to none. The flounder fishing in the months of October and November can be the trip of a lifetime for flatfish lovers. Several rivers drain into the bay and sound. Huge dormant flounders can be caught when the cold fronts signal the flounder to head offshore.
If the wind and seas prevent open-water crossing to the marsh or islands in the winter, there is a Plan B. Numerous bridges and manmade reefs hold astonishing numbers of black drum, sheepshead and others all winter long.
Some of the wintertime black drum can easily weigh over 30 pounds!

LIVING HERE
The people are Hancock’s secret
It happens frequently. Dozens of times a year, in fact. A family traveling across the Mississippi stretch of Interstate 10 will dip down into Hancock County for a short detour
along the scenic coastal byways. They stop at one of the local restaurants and enjoy one of
the best meals they’ve had in years. Afterward, they shop for a few souvenirs, which takes a little longer than expected because they keep striking up great conversations with local artists and merchants.
The original destination suddenly seems unimportant. The family decides to stay for the night at a B&B. After another fabulous meal, they walk along the beach and watch the moon come up over the Gulf of Mexico.
By breakfast time, they’re calling real-estate agents. It’s one reason why locals say, “Come play for a day, you
may want to stay.” Hancock County wins hearts by offering a wide range of delightful surprises at every turn.
For instance, while it’s home to NASA’s Stennis Space
Center, a world-class scientific community, it also boasts some of the best bird watching on the Gulf. Nature lovers can enjoy kayaking along the pristine blueway trail in the day and then take in casino entertainment in the evening.
Sportsmen can get dizzy trying to choose between fishing, golfing and sailing opportunities, while fashionistas discover sophisticated boutiques and shops in relaxing settings.
Foodies won’t run out of restaurant choices, while fitness buffs will never tire of the biking/walking trails along the beach and across the Bay Bridge — both offering unbeatable vistas.
But if you ask most newcomers what they most enjoy about life in Hancock County, chances are their No. 1 answer will be “the people.”
Families who have lived in the area for generations are joined by newcomers from all over the world, many drawn by work at the space center. The community is richer for it. History and heritage are cherished, while new ideas and fresh approaches are welcomed heartily.
Nikki Moon owns Bay Town Inn on the Bay St. Louis waterfront.
WAVELAND Waveland, with its miles of beachfront and small-
town charm, has long been known as a favorite second-home spot for generations of New Orleans residents. “The Hospitality City” also is home to Buccaneer State Park, one of the most popular state parks in Mississippi, with a newly rebuilt wave pool, water slides and campgrounds that accommodate campers who like primitive or modern sites. The Silver Slipper, one of Hancock County’s pair of casino resorts, also is located in Waveland and is constructing a new hotel. The city hosts regional tourneys at its beach volleyball courts and is home to the Ground Zero Hurricane Museum.
“Waveland has been a great place to live and raise a family. It’s our home and we’re happy to be here.” Dr. Joseph R. Lee and Suzi Lee, Waveland residents
BAY ST. LOUIS Bay St. Louis is known for its coastal-cool
lifestyle, robust arts community, colorful history and quaint shopping. There’s also the Vegas-style excitement of Hollywood Casino, charming local museums and a talented community theater company.
“The Bay” is a place that New Orleans residents discovered decades ago as a family getaway destination and second-home haven. People come to enjoy the weather and outdoor activities, restaurants, antiques, art galleries, boutiques, festivals and the wide beaches. In fact, Bay St. Louis is one of Coastal Living’s top 10 beach communities and readers of Budget Travel Magazine voted Bay St. Louis one of the top three Coolest Small Towns in the U.S.
“Bay St. Louis is like a small town, but so cool. It has all those art shops and antique stores, yet it feels lke Mayberry on the Beach.” Tracy King, Rogers, Ark.
Each of our communitieshas rich stories to tell
When Holly Lemoine-Raymond was in high school, she loved visiting Bay St. Louis, where she now owns the popular Cypress Café in the historic City Hall building.
“It’s just a great place, so quaint and different,” she says. “The slogan is ‘A Place Apart,’ and that truly says it all.”
She says visitors to Hancock County have the same reaction. “They love the uniqueness and the closeness of the people in our community. It’s a cool place to visit and hang out. We have a lot to show off.”
Each community in South Mississippi’s westernmost county has its own story to share. But the common welcoming narrative has turned first-time visitors into regular patrons and even full-time residents.

KILN For an area its size, the community of Kiln has a lot
of name recognition, thanks in large part to being the hometown of football legend Brett Favre, who played 16 seasons with the Green Bay Packers. “The Kiln” also is home to Lazy Magnolia Brewing Co., the first microbrewery in the state whose market is growing across the country. One of Hancock County’s top camping and picnic destinations, McLeod Water Park and Campground, is in the Kiln. And the Jourdan River, known for its beauty and recreational opportunities, is popular for boating, fishing, bird watching and its Blueways Trail.

Clermont Harbor is home to generations of families who enjoy life among the natural beauty of the coastline and the quiet inland areas. Clermont Harbor lies between the newly reopened Buccaneer State Park and the scenic Bayou Cadet (pronounced Caddy) area. The community is a favorite area for bird watching and catching glimpses of wildlife.
LAKESHORE/ANSLEY Another small community with big
recreational assets is the Lakeshore/Ansley area near Clermont Harbor. Fresh and saltwater fishing is outstanding, and boat launches are readily available at the Bayou Cadet marinas and small fishing camps nearby. Hunters are attracted to this area’s forests for the quail, turkeys and whitetail deer. Much of the land is part of the acoustical buffer zone surrounding Stennis Space Center’s propulsion testing operations.
PEARLINGTON Explorers traveling the Pearl River
and Gulf of Mexico waterways long ago discovered the area where the town of Pearlington is located in the county’s southwest corner. Pearlington’s natural charms include its thick pine forests and massive live oaks. Residents, many of whom work at nearby Stennis Space Center, enjoy their quiet riverside lifestyle alongside the Pearl River fishing camps.

The small-town atmosphere, cultural amenities, natural beauty and an easy, uncluttered lifestyle are a few of the reasons people choose to make Hancock County their
home. It’s long been a favorite gathering place for friends and family to enjoy great food and a good time as well as a calm weekend getaway. Natives, part-time residents and newcomers all have their own reasons for living here.
Every day, Maurice Singleton sees “a painting” when he looks at his hometown of Bay St. Louis.
“I have very fond memories of growing up here,” he says. “I remember the freedom I felt as a kid to ride my bike all over Bay St. Louis. Now, driving along the Coast, it’s always so peaceful and there is a picturesque scene, no matter where you’re coming from.”
Singleton says he’s always enjoyed living near the water and loves the natural beauty of the area. He also enjoys the personal interaction with friends when he runs into them, whether it’s in the grocery store checkout line or at local events. “Just to catch up is fun,” he says.
Singleton also appreciates what he calls the “very healthy family culture” of his hometown. He and wife, Vonretta, have three adult sons: Maurice III, Michael and Marquez. He lived in Los Angeles for a while but returned to Bay St. Louis 20 years ago.
“My wife just loves it here,” he says. “We don’t want to live anywhere else. We’re happy and comfortable here.”
LiLi Stahler grew up in New Orleans and spent summers as a child at her parents’ cottage in Waveland. The home was small but had lots of beds that were usually filled.
“As a teenager, I brought all my friends over. The more the merrier,” she says. Then, as a mother, “I brought my kids over here,” she adds. “My husband and I retired and moved to Waveland in 2000. We added on to the cottage and made it our permanent residence. It’s the only house I’ve ever known here.”
Stahler says the variety of activities and amenities she found in Hancock County surprised her.
“I was fascinated by what there is to offer in a county that is small compared to the population in New Orleans where I grew up. The library system is better and I was very impressed with that. That was a big surprise to me.”
Stahler starts her day with a walk through her neighborhood and along the beach and enjoys the pace of living and ease of getting around.
“I like the easy way of life,” she says. “And you can get anywhere usually in less than five minutes. That’s what I love the most. In fact, I’m 10 minutes away from live theater in Bay St. Louis and I love all the shops there. Bay St. Louis is a charming next door neighbor to Waveland.”
Good food is another plus to living in what Stahler calls the Bay-Waveland community.
“Eating is one of the reasons that I walk in the morning and go to aerobics class,” she says. “The food is so great.”
Jeane Odom, who has lived in Diamondhead for 27 years, says she likes what Diamondhead offers with the shopping centers and other needed services. “It’s great to have medical clinics close by so we don’t have to go to another city for routine services.” Odom says.

THE ARTS
Hancock Today32
Art is the heart of Hancock County. It’s celebrated, not just as a diversion, but also as a way of life. The galleries, art festivals, museums and practicing
artisans keep the cultural momentum going all year long. Local art is always on display in shops, restaurants,
businesses and even on the exterior walls of buildings. In fact, through a partnership with The Arts, Hancock County, the Hancock Chamber office at 111 Court St. in Bay St. Louis, serves as a year-round art gallery showcasing the work of local artists.
Second Saturday Art Walks draw hundreds of people to Old Town Bay St. Louis for strolling, shopping and enjoying the many galleries, shops and restaurants. Live entertainment and special merchant hotspots add to the flavorful atmosphere.
The Diamondhead Arts & Crafts Show, in its 29th year, is one of the Mississippi Coast’s largest festivals of its kind. Each September, shoppers find special Christmas gifts, jewelry for all styles and beautiful items for the home and garden.
Arts Alive! presents music, art, food and literature in one family-fun experience in Old Town Bay St. Louis. Dozens of artists — amateurs and professionals — demonstrate their works at various shops and galleries.
A songwriting competition, cooking contest and writing competition, combined with a literary event, make for a day of creative fun.
Three popular museums showcase Hancock County’s history.
The Mardi Gras Museum in the Visitor Center at the historic train depot in Bay St. Louis gives guests a close-up look at beautiful Carnival costumes and memorabilia featuring the work of Carter Church.
Also inside the depot is the Alice Moseley Folk Art & Antique Museum, honoring the nationally known artist who lived nearby in her Little Blue House. This quaint museum houses Miss Alice’s original paintings along with family antique furniture, pottery and art glass.
The Ground Zero Hurricane Museum inside the Waveland Civic Center includes a beautiful Dentzel carousel donated by the Port Townsend (Washington) Carousel Association.
But you don’t have to visit a gallery or museum to enjoy art in Hancock County. Festivals keep visitors and locals entertained year-round, and art seems to be at the heart of most of them.
COMING SOON: Big screen closer to home
ART IS A WAY
It won’t be long before The Beacon will lead Hancock County residents back to the movies.
The new owners of the former Waveland Cinema are working to open the theater in 2014 so that audiences can enjoy movies on the big screen close to home.
The Beacon will feature plush big seats to accommodate up to nearly 900 people.
Brothers John and Charles Watzke are veterans of the movie-theater business and are former Hancock County residents. They have restored movie theaters in Florida, Louisiana and Hattiesburg and are slowly adding improvements such as new seats to the Waveland cinema.
Their plans call for completely renovating the four
auditoriums with coastal Mississippi and New Orleans themes. One of the four will have tables instead of high-back movie theater seats and it will offer food service.
The brothers say they will spend about $600,000 or more on the renovations and equipment, including new digital projection equipment in each auditorium to bring the theater up to date with current technology.
The Watzkes usually renovate historic theaters but the Waveland project is more a sentimental one. “I remember standing in line to get in,” Watzke says.
You also will want to check out the local library where movies are now running year round.

One of the most ambitious development projects ever funded in Bay St. Louis comes to reality in the summer of 2014. And when the $22 million Bay
St. Louis Municipal Harbor opens, officials say it will be an economic game-changer unlike the city has ever seen.
The much-anticipated project will become the city’s waterfront gateway, drawing leisure boaters and fishermen to the historic downtown district like never before.
Bay St. Louis Mayor Les Fillingame calls the new harbor “the most accessible public beach, pier and harbor for those who go and come or stay a while. It’s a tremendous opportunity to grow traffic in downtown and make it more attractive.”
The new harbor is expected to attract boaters from South Alabama to the Lake Pontchartrain Basin who are looking for a unique destination where they can spend a day or a weekend and not need a car to drive to a place for a meal, entertainment and shopping.
The waterfront project includes the harbor, the fishing pier, the expanded sand beach and the parking area at the foot of the new vehicular ramp.
For boaters docking at the harbor, the downtown community will be just a short walk away. That easy access to the shops, restaurants, art galleries and other attractions makes the Bay St. Louis harbor so unique.
The major beachfront development also is expected to attract visitors to Old Town and beyond with its recreational amenities
along the shoreline. The redesigned recreational Rutherford Pier that forms the northern edge of the harbor is sure to become a favorite spot to fish. The 10-foot-wide pier features three covered pavilions with benches to relax, take in the breezes and the scenery. At the end of the 1,100-foot pier is the fishing pavilion, and just to the north of the pier is a large recreational beach with showers and restrooms. All the features including the comfort station are handicapped accessible.
The harbor consists of four piers (and room for a fifth pier) with 163 slips with electrical and water connections. The slips will accommodate vessels ranging from 25 feet to 60 feet.
The concrete breakwater to the south will protect the interior of the harbor basin and be wide enough for electric carts to shuttle boaters to their vessels and a pedestrian access ramp that is accessible from street level.
There also are two fueling docks dispensing diesel and gasoline and for those coming by car, a parking lot that can accommodate 130 vehicles.
One special feature at the harbor is the entertainment deck where festivals, concerts, fishing rodeos and other activities can be held. The seawall steps create a natural amphitheater for this special waterfront entertainment venue.

Hancock County is home to international businesses and has an industrial park
that is as good as any place in the country.
“There are very few counties where you can find a port, an industrial park, an international airport and a NASA federal installation with tremendous opportunity in aerospace/defense sector growth, including Naval operations — all wrapped up in a place that has a very high quality of life,” says Ashley Edwards, executive director of the Hancock County Port and Harbor Commission.
The Port and Harbor Commission is the economic development authority for the county and controls the infrastructure at the airport, airpark, and Port Bienville Industrial Park. The goal is to move forward with site readiness projects, like Stennis Space Center, and manage incentives for industrial expansions. The list of Hancock County employers includes a significant number of national and international companies such as Rolls-Royce North America, Lockheed Martin, Aerojet Rocketdyne and Science Applications International Corp., which operate at Stennis Space Center (SSC). Among SSC’s newest business additions is SpaceX, the space transit company whose goal is to take people to other planets. The California company cut the ribbon in 2014 on its new test facility and has the potential to grow its activities and staff.
The presence of SSC is important to Hancock County’s ability to recruit and retain industry, especially aerospace and defense-related businesses, says Edwards, who lives in Diamondhead.
Lazy Magnolia Brewing Co., located in Stennis Airport Airpark, completed a major expansion in 2014, adding 16,500 square feet, giving owners Mark and Leslie Henderson the capability to more than double the brewery’s production and add more jobs to the county.
SELEX Galileo Inc., also located there, has grown from 34,000 square feet to 88,000 square feet of hangar space to meet the demand for its aircraft upgrading and modification services. It installs the latest technology into commercial and military aircraft.
Other large employers are based inside Hancock County’s Port Bienville Industrial Park. They include Calgon Carbon of New Zealand, Saudi Arabia’s SABIC and French-based SNF Polychemie.

NEW TERMINAL BRINGS AIRPORT ‘40 YEARS INTO THE FUTURE’
The new terminal building and adjacent hangar at Stennis International Airport will offer amenities that will take the airport “40 years into the future,” says director Bill Cotter. The additions are scheduled to open in 2014.
The two-story terminal will house Million Air, the airport’s full-service, fixed-base operator, as well as the airport’s administration and third-party tenants.
Million Air will occupy the first floor of the 10,000-square-foot terminal. The first floor consists of two passenger lobbies, sleep rooms where pilots can rest between flights, a meeting room and a small movie theater.
The second floor has office space for the airport management as well as tenant rentals. A restaurant will be operated by Million Air to serve passengers, crews, airport staff and visitors. A large viewing area will allow plane watchers an area to see and be seen. A meeting center, with audio/visual capabilities will also be available.
The new hangar, which features a state-of-the-art fire/foam suppression system, has 22,000 square feet of aircraft storage with an additional seven large workshop rooms and 12 144-square-foot offices.
Stennis International Airport, owned and operated by the Hancock County Port and Harbor Commission, is a 1,680-acre general aviation airport with an 8,500-foot runway and an adjacent 100-acre airpark. The all-weather airport has an air traffic control tower and an automated weather observation system and is designated as a Foreign Trade Zone. It sees a mixture of general aviation and military traffic daily.
The airport is accessible by Mississippi 603 and Interstate 10.

The Hancock Library System is reaching into the community for help and it’s paying off for the young readers it serves.
This year, the library system was named the inaugural recipient of the Hancock County Excel by 5 Coalition’s Champion of the Young Child award. Excel by 5 is a fund of the Hancock Community Development Foundation.
“Without the partnership with the Hancock County Library System, we would not be where we are today in emphasizing the important roles communities play to ensure that our children in Hancock County are ‘Happy, Healthy and Ready’ to learn when they reach kindergarten,” says Cathy Wilson, Excel by 5 certification manager.
The Bay St. Louis-Hancock County Library, Pearlington Public Library and the Waveland Public Library each host a separate Excel by 5 resource center that contains items to help parents teach their children the importance of reading.
The library system also partnered with the Bay St. Louis Rotary Club to promote the Dolly Parton Imagination Library,
where children, born after Jan. 1, 2013, receive one book a month until their fifth birthday.
Each year, the library system hosts its annual Summer Reading Program for more than 400 children and teens. Local businesses and organizations help fund or present programs indicative of that year’s theme. Those programs can include movies, puppet shows or live performers. Toddlers age 18 months through 5 years attend the Rubber Ducky program, which includes coloring, arts and crafts, outdoor play, and/or story time.
Countywide public library services are funded by the Hancock County Board of Supervisors and the cities of Bay St. Louis and Waveland.

Knowing that a surgeon’s career is a demanding one, they wanted an environment where activities were close at hand and they could make the most of his time off. The family refers to the slower pace and higher quality of life they’ve found here as “Bay Time.”
Hancock Medical Center in Bay St. Louis is one of the newest members of the Ochsner Health System, and for Hancock County, which has owned the hospital since 1960, that membership provides a strong health-care network for residents.
“It’s the best of both worlds,” says Hancock Medical CEO Thomas K. Steiner, FACHE. “Our community hospital continues to provide convenient, easily accessible health care to the patients we are privileged to serve, and now we are able to do so as the first Mississippi member of Ochsner Health System, a world-class health-care organization, which is consistently rated one of the best in the nation.”
The hospital keeps on the cutting-edge of medical technology. In addition to its hospital in Bay St. Louis, Hancock Medical also has a medical campus in Diamondhead featuring an imaging center, physical therapy, physician offices, and Urgent Care Walk-In Clinic.
Having the convenience of a newly reconstructed hometown hospital with expanded access to services, combined with the expertise of the Ochsner Health System, is a huge win for Hancock County and surrounding communities.
The Ochsner Health System is southeast Louisiana’s largest nonprofit, academic, multi-
specialty, health-care delivery system, with 11 hospitals and more than 40 health centers. Ochsner employs more than 14,000 people, 900 physicians in some 90 medical specialties and subspecialties.
Memorial Hospital, only 15 minutes away in Gulfport, is ranked as the Best Hospital in Mississippi by U.S. News & World Report. U.S. News also listed Memorial among the top hospitals in the nation for diabetes and endocrinology care.
Memorial offers several of the region’s most comprehensive clinical programs, such as emergency medicine; women and children services; orthopedic services; medical rehabilitation; cardiovascular services; neurosciences and oncology.
In Diamondhead, Memorial Hospital expanded their services to meet the medical needs of this growing city. The new 15,000-square-foot facility features a Physicians Clinic and Diagnostic Center with services in neurology, orthopedics, urology, X-rays and CAT scans. They also offer outpatient rehab.
Memorial has also established Physician Clinics in Bay St. Louis for internal and family medicine and specialist appointments are also available at these clinics.

“After one visit, we were sold on the community. The people we met obviously loved where they lived — not just the people who were born here – but the transplants like us, too. Their sense of community was contagious.” Dr. Trey Rimmer Bay St. Louis resident

“We want to attract even more people to our
community.”
Dr. Rowe Crowder III and his wife, Melissa, grew up just blocks apart in Bay St. Louis. Now they’re building a home together in the same Cedar Point area.
Dr. Crowder attended St. Stanislaus High School until his senior year when the family moved to California. From there, he earned a medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, did his residency in internal medicine at Ochsner Medical Foundation in New Orleans and practiced at Ochsner Clinic.
The two have roots in Bay St. Louis and love living on the Coast. After working at Ochsner Clinic, Dr. Crowder opened his private practice in Bay St. Louis. He is an Ochsner Physician Partner.
Melissa is the administrator of Dr. Crowder’s internal medical practice, and the three family dogs also “work” there, usually behind the receptionist’s desk. “The patients love the dogs,” Melissa says. “They ask for them when they’re not here and bring them treats.”
Melissa received a bachelor of science degree in nursing from William Carey University and worked as an R.N. in Hancock Medical’s emergency room and surgery department before joining her husband at the practice.
The Crowders lead very busy lives, dividing their time between family, his private practice, duties at Hancock Medical Center and their heavy involvement with Bay-Waveland Yacht Club.
The couple was named Man and Woman of the Year by the Bay-Waveland Yacht Club last year, and Dr. Crowder is serving as the rear commodore and a second-year board member.
Dr. Crowder also is secretary of Hancock Medical’s Board of Trustees and is the first physician in many years to serve on the board.
“We have worked hard to affect some type of change there, and bringing in Ochsner has been a huge benefit,” he says. “Our goal is to stay on the cutting edge of technology and patient care.”

HANCOCK A RETIREMENT COMMUNITYHancock County and the Gulf Coast region are a
certificated Mississippi Retirement Community, dubbed as such because of its great tax advantages offered.
Affordable cost of living, low taxes, low crime rate, quality medical care, recreation, educational and cultural opportunities — as well as being a “welcoming” community — garned the designation.
Retirees living in Mississippi don’t have to pay any state income tax on qualified retirement income. They also gain an additional bonus exemption on property taxes upon reaching the age of 65.
Mississippi residents enjoy the lowest tax burden in the nation, according to a ranking by Bloomberg Financial News. It ranked Mississippi ahead of South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama and Alaska. Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine also rates it No. 1 in the Sun Belt for least expensive tax states for retirees.
With a low effective tax rate compared to other tourist destinations, the first $75,000 of a home’s value is also exempt for anyone older than 65.
And there’s no tax on qualified retirement income (including Social Security) in the state of Mississippi.
