I loved working with Changes! I usu-ally don’t wear a lot of make up, so I really felt and looked like a princess on my big day. It even rained on my wedding, and despite the added moisture I looked perfect the entire day and was sad to take my hair down and make up off. I would rec-ommend their services to anyone! —Denise
“Moving to Norfolk right before my wedding made me nervous about finding someone to do my hair. After five minutes in the chair with Franc I knew I had found my stylist and he even came to our hotel which made the day less stressful. Put Fun First
EDITOR'S NOTE
The most important part of your wedding day should simply be having one heck of a good time, so we decided to do the same when planning an issue packed with wonderful ways to make your event both lovely and lighthearted.
Your first stop when navigating this fun-filled magazine should be our Knot Notes section. Here you will discover top-notch tips on how to incorporate whimsy into your wedding by adding vintage touches (page 12), kicking things off with a signature cocktail (page 14), making your furry friends part of the ceremony (page 18) and including a photo booth at the reception to give your guests an opportunity to act like carefree kids, making funny faces and silly memories (page 20).
We enjoyed a little amusement of our own when putting together our feature fashion spread. The smiles on our faces most likely resulted from indulging in the irresistible confections left over from our photoshoot. There is something undeniably appealing about candy and cupcakes, so we paired these tasty treats and many more with dresses that are just as sweet—think frills, frou frou, darling and decadent. The fun begins on page 33.
No matter what type of wedding you plan, don’t forget to create a celebration both you and your guests can truly enjoy and happy memories that will last a lifetime.

} Old-Fashioned Romance
It could be the economy today or perhaps the notion of going back to a simpler time. Maybe things were just cuter back then. Whatever the reason, many brides and grooms are creating rustic and vintage themes for their weddings, and the trend doesn’t seem to be fading any time soon. Adding some basic embellishments here and there will go a long way in paying homage to days gone by.
1) Attire Authentic wedding gowns from the ’40s were—let’s say—a little unflattering,
but in the ’50s, more fun styles began to appear including the flared tea length dress a la Audrey Hepburn. You may find a vintage reproduction dress or have an actual vintage gown altered to better fit today’s style. You may even choose a more modern style and accessorize with a birdcage veil and vintage jewelry.
2) Flowers As money wasn’t in excess during previous decades, neither were grand,
expensive blooms. Opt for simple bouquets or nosegays of hydrangeas, lavender, peach roses, bachelor buttons and peonies fastened together with burlap or lace. If you’re feeling especially crafty, create a colorful bouquet from vintage brooches.
3) Centerpieces Simplicity and romance fit the script for adorning the reception tables.
Centerpieces may consist of anything from uncomplicated floral arrangements in variously sized vases or jars to antique containers and dishes filled with candles or vintage candies.
4) Food Uncomplicated dishes such as finger sandwiches, fruit cocktail, chicken salad
and a variety of canapés will be most adorable served on antique plates and labeled with miniature chalkboards. For sweets, think whoopie pies, petit fours, an ice cream sundae bar or a vintage candy display.
5) Guestbook Set out an old typewriter for guests to type their wedding wishes, or have them
fill out messages on vintage postcards. You may even create a display with a rustic windowpane for guests to sign with liquid chalk.
6) Décor Add some personalized touches by including homemade and antique
adornments to your wedding space. Dress the reception tables with vintage tablecloths, and find mismatched dishes and silverware for each place setting. Create burlap flags with the words “Just Married” or “Wedding” to hang at a prominent spot. Utilize anything from antique books and old birdcages to cloth-lined picnic baskets and retro frames, and let your creative spirit run wild!

Signature Sips
1 A cosmopolitan city soiree calls for a sophisticated spirit—the vodka martini. Served in a sleek and stylish glass, the martini is ideal for slow sipping, meaning one drink should last the entirety of a cocktail hour. Consider having two exclusive flavors based on season and preference.Spring: Lavender Lemon/ Strawberry Champagne Summer: Cucumber Mint/ Rosemary PearFall: Spiced Apple/ Cranberry OrangeWinter: Dirty Martini/ Whipped Chocolate

Your invitations are the
first indication of the tone,
formality and creativity of
your wedding style. Keeping
this concept in mind, when
guests arrive at a wedding
reception, they’ll typically
enjoy a cocktail while they
wait for the bride and groom
to arrive. Signature cocktails
act as the invitation to the
reception; they set the mood
for the rest of the evening and
invite guests to sit back, take
a sip and celebrate. Read on to
find out which signature swig
may be right for you.

2Country CocktailHaving your wedding on a farm, golf course
or country chic locale invokes thoughts of sweet tea and lemonade. Aficionados of the
Arnold Palmer will certainly enjoy the grownup version—the John Daly, made by adding a
shot of vodka to the Palmer or by substituting ordinary sweet tea with sweet tea vodka. It’s
only fitting to serve this down home drink in a Mason jar accompanied by a lemon wedge.

Vow to be VintageTaking inspiration from decades past is a fine trend, and nothing pairs with big band music and vintage décor better than a nostalgic cocktail from the year you’re re-creating. Go back in time at your retro reception with these throwback thirst quenchers. 1920s— Old Fashioned, Manhattan or anything with bitters
will create quite a roar.1930s— Prohibition is over; celebrate with Gin Rickeys
and Side Cars!1940s— Pink Lady, Mint Julep and Planter’s Punch fit
the hepcat script.1950s— As vodka gains popularity, so do Moscow Mules
and White Russians.

Beachy BeveragesAfter guests dust the sand from their shoes at your Virginia Beach Oceanfront ceremony, they’ll want something cool,
refreshing and tropical. Rum is an automatic go-to when prepar-ing coastal cocktails, so consider having your bartender con-
coct pineapple and mango rum drinks served in rocks glasses and garnished with flowers, umbrellas or monogrammed swizzle
sticks and fresh fruit. Other options include coconut margaritas with toasted coconut rims or key lime mojito daiquiris.
Morning MatrimonyPerhaps you’re so eager to tie the knot that you simply can’t wait until the afternoon. There are plenty of options for early day drinks to accompany your brunch bash. Set up two stations, a mimosa bar and a Bloody Mary bar. At the mimosa bar, allow guests to flavor their OJ and champagne with juices of grapefruit, pineapple, watermelon, strawberry, peach and mango. Instead of having them shake up their own Bloody Mary (this could get messy), serve them pre-mixed, and set up this bar with an assortment of garnishes: stuffed olives, pearl onions, pickled aspara-gus and okra, artichoke hearts, celery, bacon, blue crab claws, shrimp, smoked cheese and sausages on skewers and Scotch quail eggs.

ENSURE THAT NO MOMENTS ARE
MISPLACED ON YOUR MAJOR DAY

You already know that hiring an experienced photographer and videographer guarantees that you’ll be able to look back at your wedding day through photos and videos and fondly remember each special moment. However, while the professionals are focused on moments from the bride and groom’s perspective, they may miss out on some of the fun, candid shots of family and friends. Here are some ways to make sure that every moment—from every person—can be captured and shared.
• Wedding coordinators to help plan the event of your lifetime• Banquet spaces for up to 350 guests • Off-site catering options
• Near Saint Bede's Catholic Church, Williamsburg Baptist, First Baptist, Williamsburg Presbyterian,Williamsburg Methodist and the Wren Chapel at William and Mary
Reserve now. Mention this ad and receive acomplementary honeymoon night for the Bride and Groom.
Special limited time offer valid through December 31, 2012.
4You and your groom may also choose to share some past memories of your
relationship with your guests at the wedding. Compile pictures and videos of your first date, engagement photos or candid shots from vacations taken together, and create a slideshow or video that can be played at the reception or a website that guests can check out before the big day. Your guests will enjoy taking this trip down memory lane with you, and it can even be updated with wedding photos and whatever else the future may bring!
1Create a Facebook group, and invite all your guests to join. This group can be utilized
starting from the time of the engagement and can serve as a place for guests to post their own photos from engagement parties and bridal
showers as well as the wedding; you may be surprised at some of the sentimental and silly moments they capture!
2 For something more permanent, place disposable cameras at
each table. This way, guests can play photographer and snap the scene from their own perspective. Afterward, have the film processed, and you and your hubby can spend an evening looking and laughing at some of the moments you may have missed.
3As long as your guests are playing photographer, let them act as videographer, too. Flip cams offer
a unique way to capture moments from all angles, and they’re reasonably priced and easy to use. You may see your first dance from a different angle, wed-ding party speeches that your photographer may have missed and recorded greetings from family and friends. Have a professional video editor compile all the clips into one priceless presentation.

As people seek to add personal touches to their weddings, imbuing their big day with aspects of their personalities and desires, there has been a growing trend of including pets in wedding ceremonies. Multiple benefits accompany this practice—pets can simultaneously make your wedding photographs memorable and adorable, the bridesmaids will no longer be the most ridiculously dressed guests at the wedding, and including your animals means that all of your loved ones are with you on your special day.
Pets can play a variety of roles in weddings. A ring bearer dog can carry the rings on his collar, whether accompanied down the aisle by a person or summoned by the couple. Flower dogs can escort petal-throwing humans as they make their way to the altar. And the couple can also hold their pets during the service, or another member of the wedding can sit with a well-behaved animal at the ceremony or reception.
When planning to invite a pet to your wedding, there a few considerations to take into account. Some venues do not welcome animals, so couples should get approval for furry friends before the big day. You should also assess your pet’s temperament. If your cat is nervous around crowds or cannot sit still, a wedding might not be the most comfortable place for her. If Fido barks at strangers or is likely to make a play for the steak, your wedding attendees might be the ones who suffer. Pets can also be messy, so if you are concerned about dog slobber on your wedding dress, perhaps your pet should sit this one out.
If your animals cannot be present at your wedding, there are still a number of ways you can remember them on your special day, including incorporating their likenesses into figures on the cake, mentioning them in the ceremony or vows or playing a slideshow including some photographs of them at the reception.

While the photo booth once served as merely a retro amusement park mainstay, it has started popping up at all kinds of contem-porary events, including weddings. And it’s the life of the party. As Dusten Keith, who re-cently launched RST Photo Booths, observes, “Nobody comes out of the photo booth with a frown!”
But it also provides the bride and groom with lasting keepsakes of their reception in the form of a photo album and, from some com-panies, a CD/DVD, as most booths print two copies of each photo—one for the guests and one for the bridal couple. The latter is tucked inside an archival album with space for guests to handwrite personal messages.
Expect to pay somewhere in the neighbor-hood of $675–$895 for a four-hour session, with or without an attendant and props, though all companies offer packages with longer sessions, and some as short as three. Keith emphasizes that the personality of the attendant is a make or break proposition, so stress your desire for a “people person” when you book the booth. And, while the photos will be cherished memories with or without props, for the guests’ sake, Keith asserts that lots of good props “make the booth.”
While booking a photo booth may sound like a simple proposition, there are actually quite a few considerations. To make it easy, we offer our Top 20 list of questions to ask before you book a Photo Booth for your most important day. Many of these questions can be easily answered by visiting vendor websites.
PHOTO BOOTHS OFFER GUESTS NO-COST ENTERTAINMENT AND TONS OF FUN
Note: This is not necessarily a comprehensive list, as there may be full-service wedding companies that offer photo booths as one of many services or new companies.

We’ve all seen enough episodes of Bridezillas to know how not to behave when planning a wedding. However, there may be some etiquette rules that brides today are unaware of. With some help from the Etiquette book by Peggy Post, great-granddaughter-in-law of famed author and etiquette extraordinaire Emily Post, we’ve compiled this quick guide of formalities and courtesies that will ensure a poised and polish bride—as well as some hints for bending the rules when necessary.
Choosing Bridesmaids/UshersEven though it’s all about you, take into consideration the financial sta-tuses of your bridesmaids. You may ease the costs for them by choosing dresses that aren’t too expensive and a bachelorette party that doesn’t require air fare.
Bending the rules: Etiquette says there should not be more bridesmaids than ushers, but nowadays, the two parties don’t have to match in number. There’s also no rule that brides must choose all gals and grooms must choose all guys.
ExpensesBe willing to budge when it comes to elaborate details, especially if you’re not the one paying for these extras. Begin planning your budget with fixed costs (minister’s fees, postage for invitations, marriage license, etc.) and subtract that total from your available funds to see what’s left before insisting on the stretch Hummer and swan ice sculptures.
Bending the rules: It used to be that the bride’s and groom’s families were responsible for specific costs. However as couples are getting more established in their careers before marriage, it’s common for the couple to pay for many of their own expenses. Depending on financial situations and other factors, it’s not uncommon for the groom’s family to pay for the entire wedding or vice versa. Today, anything goes with budget as long as it is agreed upon beforehand.
InvitationsIf you choose to invite no children to the wedding, you must keep it consistent. Just because Jenny is a perfect angel and Johnny is the devil’s advocate, they must both be invited or not invited at all.Check, double check, and get a friend to check the spelling of all names and information listed on the invitations.
Bending the rules: Shades of ivory and white and Roman or script fonts are what Post recommends for invitations, but it’s now common to see bold colors, retro font types and even letterpress to create fun and memorable invites.
CeremonyDon’t plan for an early ceremony if the reception won’t be until the evening since this will be an awkward and boring lull for your guests.
Bending the rules: As it’s common for couples to live together before marriage, brides don’t necessarily need to be “given away” at the altar. Nowadays, it’s personal preference.
ReceptionIf your reception falls during a meal time, guests will expect a meal. Cheese, crackers and a fruit display won’t cut it.You don’t have to wait until later in the night to play more upbeat songs; however there should be a fair mix of songs that all guests can enjoy. Grandma may not appreciate hours of you and your friends performing The Dougie, The Wobble and the Cupid Shuffle.
Bending the rules: Post recommends that the bride and groom depart the reception before guests who are waiting to see their departure grow tired and leave. It’s now common for the bride and groom to stay until the end of the reception and, sometimes, even attend an after-party.
Wedding GiftsIt’s never ok to include registry information with your wedding invitation, even if it’s to say, “No gifts, please.” This info should be passed along by bridesmaids who are planning a bridal shower.Always, always write a thank you note for a gift received—not a thank you email, text or Facebook message. All notes should be written within three months of the wedding.
Bending the rules: Peggy Post goes into great detail about displaying gifts in your home for friends and family to view, noting that the gifts should be arranged by color, texture, shape and value. If you don’t feel like turning your home into a wedding gift museum, it’s ok.

Wedding rings have been around since Roman times, when men gave their brides gold rings to wear in public and iron rings for daily use. Rather than being a symbol of love, the jewelry indicated a wife’s status as her hus-band’s possession. The history of engagement rings, however, begins a little more recently and appears to be a tad more romantic.
In 1477, Archduke Maximilian of Hamburg bestowed upon Mary of Burgundy an engage-ment ring made of small diamonds that formed an “M” for her name. His gift sparked a trend among wealthy Europeans, one that spread to the rest of us in the late 19th century with the founding of diamond mines in Africa.
As the popularity of engagement rings rose, styles expanded to fit all tastes. Victorian rings (1837–1900) were the first widespread example of engagement jewelry. Prominent traits among these rings were a band of yellow or rose gold and multiple diamonds.
If you’re into platinum and filigree, The Edwardian era (1901–1910) might appeal more to your tastes. Famous for its band archi-tecture, the era popularized intricate, delicate filigree and sapphires and rose cut diamonds.
Art Deco (1920–1935) engagement rings were truly unique. Influenced by Asian, Egyptian and Native American jewelry and patterns, these rings often featured geometrically cut stones. This geometric style further appeared in the shape and designs of the band.
Colorful gems have made a comeback in the past year and a half, in the wake of Kate Middleton’s stunning sapphire engagement ring. Also popular in 2012 are sculptured bands with carved designs or filigree,
yellow gold and square diamonds.

Rainbow of Romance
A COLLABORATION OF VIBRANT COLORS AND THE MELDING OF TWO HEARTS CREATES A BRIGHTLY HUED WILLIAMSBURG WEDDING
Compiled by Katherine JohnsonPhotography by Daniel Min Photography, www.danielmin.com
Who: Chris Malpass, a photographer, and Meagan James, a model and Zumba instructor. When: March 31, 2012. Where: Williamsburg Community Chapel. Guest List: 85. Where They Met: Chris and Meagan met in class during their final semester at ODU. The Engagement: During a Myrtle Beach, N.C. vacation, Chris asked Meagan to come to the beach with him to shoot photos of the sunset. He asked for Meagan’s help while he tested the lighting, then approached her and got down on one knee. “I thought we were just posing for a photo so I started to kneel down as well as he grabbed my hand. He tried to keep me from kneeling down, and I finally realized what was happening,” Meagan says. Chris had set up the two cameras to capture everything; one was recording video and the other was set to take a photo every second. Wedding Wishes: “Colorful and vibrant” were the words Meagan used to describe their theme. “As long as it was bright and fun it was in!” What’s Next: The couple plans on growing Chris’ photography business, and Meagan will soon train to become a high school math teacher as she continues to model and teach Zumba. They also look forward to traveling together. “He’s my guide as I nervously venture with him to all of the strange and foreign places he knows so well,” Meagan says.
Left Dress and Shoes: To go with Meagan’s dress from Williamsburg Bridal & Formal, Chris bought her new white Adidas shoes, which came in handy for walking outside during photos.
Left Vintage Car: Chris and Meagan left the ceremony in a red 1962 Ford Fairland, which belongs to Chris’ brother.
Right Flowers: Meagan chose the assortment of blooms in her bouquet because they were so vibrant and colorful. “They were the one accessory that defi ned me as a bride,” she says.
Below Family Circle: Chris prepares for the ceremony with help from his father, brother, best man, Derek, and the offi ciating minister.
Below Finishing Touches: Chris’ mother and “Nana” assists Meagan with her veil.
Below Middle Rings: Chris selected a cathedral mount and emerald-cut stone from Jared the Galleria of Jewelry for Meagan’s ring.
Below Right Ceremony: “When I saw the faux stained glass accent behind the altar light up, I fell in love with the mood, and it fi t us perfectly,” Meagan says.
Below Right Cake: The three cake layers were almond, chocolate and tropical bliss, a mixture of mango, orange and other fruit fl avors. Edible fl owers adorned the cake, and they chose the topper because they felt it suited them and their passions perfectly.

Who: Adam Carroll, an attorney in Virginia Beach, and Kylene Wenzl, an occupational therapist in Chesapeake. When: May 7, 2011. Where: Belle Haven Presbyterian Church in Belle Haven and Aqua Restaurant in Cape Charles. Where They Met: Kylene and Adam lived in the same apartment complex. Kylene had long thought that Adam was cute and scored a date when a neighbor shared with Adam that Kylene was interested in one of his passions—golf. Their first date was to a golf course. The Engagement: Adam bought the ring before the couple’s trip to Belgium and the South of France and spent the week hiding it from Kylene, planning to propose on top of the Eiffel Tower. Their first evening in Paris, there was a surprisingly short line to climb the Eiffel Tower, and, spur of the moment, the couple decided to go up. “My heart sank; the ring was in the room,” Adam says. He ended up proposing over an indoor picnic the next evening as the Eiffel Tower’s light show sparkled outside the windows of their hotel room. Wedding Wishes: Ever since she was a child, Kylene wanted a “big, elegant wedding.” The couple chose “Paris” as a wedding theme since the City of Love was the site of the proposal. What’s Next: The couple recently bought a house in Chesapeake, and they are awaiting the birth of their daughter come fall. “Our fairy tale continues to grow,” Kylene says. “It just keeps getting better.”

Left Just Married: Kylene and Adam felt that their nephew Ian was too old to be a ring bearer, so instead he carried two momentous signs: “Here Comes the Bride” and “Just Married.”
Left Cake: The four-tired cake had an Eiffel Tower design to fi t the Paris theme and incorporated the couple’s favorite fl avors—vanilla, chocolate, carrot and almond.
Left The Church: The fl orist created two letters from white carnations, K and A, to be hung on the church doors. Kylene noted that the congregation of historic Belle Haven Presbyterian Church “went out of their way to make my wedding day perfect,” even fi xing the old bell tower to fulfi ll her dream of bells ringing at the end of the wedding ceremony.
Left Bouquet: Kylene chose to carry white and purple anemone, white tulips, sweet pea, and ivory calla lilies down the aisle.
Above Clothespins: The table numbers were made to look like antique postcards and even incorporated a Paris stamp. Kylene’s mother made the decorative clothespins that clasped the postcards to lines of twine, and vintage luggage bookended the arrangement.
Right Golf: Adam, an avid golfer, wanted a few wedding photos with his clubs at the Bay Creek Resort and Club golf courses. Kylene was drawn to the beautiful scenery and stunning views of the Chesapeake Bay.
Right Caricatures: The art district in Paris is fi lled with caricaturists, so Kylene and Adam decided to incorporate this fun touch into their wedding. “Our guests loved it,” says Kylene, and the portraits were so popular that the couple had to pay the artist for an extra hour!
Right Centerpieces: Eiffel Tower statuettes decorated some of the black and white hatboxes fi lled with fl owers that garnished the tables. “All tables had votive candles with love sayings written in French,” says Kylene.

for a couple who has an indescribable love for the beach and for one another, having a reception at Wyndham Virginia Beach Oceanfront was the obvious choice. Jonathan White and Holly Darden celebrated their romance here last May overlooking the white, sandy beach and the dazzling, blue ocean. the venue was a perfect location for the beach theme they envisioned, and the couple was hooked when they saw the stunning ballroom. “We walked in the Wyndam and knew that was it,” mother of the bride Yvonne Darden says.

We love living by the sea and are constantly inspired by the ever-changing blue hues of the ocean, the roaring waves crashing onto the silky sand and the treasures of time-worn, candy-colored glass and myriad of seashells that wash ashore onto the beach.
Those must be similar inspirations for Kelly Lambroff of Beach Bucket Bakery in Virginia Beach.
Delectable cookies at her shop, ranging in circumference from bite-size (a great size for our favor) to dessert-size, come wrapped in cellophane and artfully and whimsically tied to brightly colored sand shovels. The sweets are available in an assortment of flavors, including Crunch Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip and Mint Dark Chocolate Chip. There are also sandwiches, too, like banana cookies with chocolate cream,
ginger cookies with lemon cream and key lime cookies with coconut cream. There is also a vegan chocolate chip.
With cookies and shovels at hand, we sat down at our computer and downloaded some starfish clip art and, in a document, added the words, “Wish Upon A Star(fish)” along
with the names of the blissful couple and date of the big day.
These were printed out on heavy stock paper and, using double-sided tape,
affixed to a large, whitewashed sand bucket. A smaller
version of the printout was tied onto the handle of each sand shovel.
A flourish of Caribbean-blue tissue paper lined the pail, and the cookie-affixed shovels were arranged inside. The results?
Just beachy.
