There are definite Challenges for coal fired power producers/ plant owners to comply with thenew Environment guidelines, both with respect to particulate matter emission , as will as gaseousemissions.
The challenges has to be dealt separately for
- Existing plants- New Plants
Existing Plants
- Is there space for adding additional ESP fields. For instance , let us consider the presentemission levels in the range of 600mg/nm3 , to bring down the level to 100mg/nm3 we need toadd 2 fields in each of the gas passage.
- Is the present ESP performing to its designed condition. Because most of the ESP’s installed inIndian power plant during the last 10 – 15 years have been designed for emission of 50mg/nm3or even less.

Though the ESP’s installed in Indian power plants are significantly bigger than else were inthe world ( Indian 660 MW ESP : 54 to 60 fields ; outside India 660 MW : 32 fields ) , stillmany ESP’s are not performing to its design condition.
ESP in the existing plant are not performing due to one or more of the following reasons
- Hopper Level switches bypassed , Ash level build up . Certain cases up to 60% of the heightof CE. Even though the Ash is evacuated , the Electrodes get permanent deformation ,misaligned.
- Rapping system not properly maintained.- Seal Air system not properly maintained. This causes the dust to get accumulated in the
Insulator , leading to crack.- Old type of controllers.
Addressing the above points , combined with field addition ( series or parallel ) is the onlysolution for the existing plants.

New coal fired Power Plants :
• Most of the new Tender released for Utility plants go with an guaranteed outlet emissionof less than 17mg/nm3.
• Globally ( Europe & USA ) , For coal fired boilers , Fabric Filter is also considered as solutionfor achieving low emissions on sustained basis.
• Another advantage of Fabric Filter is that it is not sensitive to the type of fuel , inlet dustloading etc.
• Capital cost is comparatively low when compared to an ESP , but more operational costwith respect to power consumption of the ID fan , and replacement of bags every 3 years.
• Fabric available to operate in wide range of elevated temperature.

· Desulphurization efficiency above 99 % can beachieved
· Availability of over 98 % can be achieved· Simple and reliable process· No pre-dedusting of boiler ash needed· No limitations on SO2/SO3 concentrations;
desulphurization efficiency > 99% possible· Complete SO3, therefore no need for any
special material for corrosion protection· Multi pollution removal technology (heavy
metals, dioxins and furans, particles PM10)· Low space requirements· Lower investment costs than others· Dry FGD product· No reheating of cleaned flue gases necessary· No scale up limitations· Unlimited part load performance due to clean
gas recirculation

Hamon have a advanced integrated Multi-Pollutant control Technology called ReACT
Cooling Systems Air Quality Systems Process Heat Exchangers Chimneys HRSG & Waste Heat Boilers
Hamon Air Quality Systems
§ Fully dry process based on moving bed adsorption on activated coke§ No water evaporated into flue gas, (water usage at 1% of WFGD, DFGD)§ No sprays, no wet/dry interface, no moist material fouling, no slurry preparation§ No increase in water vapor plume, no acid plume
§ SO2 and acid gases§ >>95% SO2 control§ Near zero SO3 emission§ Carbon steel flue gas path including stack
§ NOx control design options§ Co-benefit NOx control at 20-40%§ Enhanced NOx control to 40-60% with NH3 dosed AC regeneration§ Higher NOx control to 80% available with two-stage adsorption
§ Hg control with waste volume minimization§ 95% control of both elemental and oxidized forms as co-benefit§ Hg waste volume minimized (<0.1 ton/MW/year)
§ Regenerative system for activated coke adsorbent§ Reduced reagent and disposal material volume§ Sulfur rich gases are feedstock to production of byproduct sulfuric acid
§ Operational through start-up and shutdown§ Flue gas is treated over 100% of the boiler operation
§ Well suited as retrofit technology§ Installation downstream reduces station outage requirements§ Dry operation allows use of existing stack/liners
