Halton Regional Police Service Communities on Phone Patrol (COPP) Excellence Integrity Justice Trust and Respect Teamwork Accountability Communities On Phone Patrol (COPP) is a joint effort of the Halton Regional Police Service and the citizens of Halton. As the extra eyes and ears of Community Policing, COPP volunteers observe and report suspicious and/or illegal activities such as vandalism, youth loitering, break and enters, and drug and alcohol offences happening in their respective communities to members of law enforcement. Role: Highly-trained COPP volunteers work in groups of two or more to patrol assigned areas where there have been high incidents of crime. Volunteers use their own vehicles and are provided with cell phones, if needed. COPP members do not get directly involved in the situations they encounter. Their job is to observe and notify police of any occurrence in need of immediate attention, log information on suspicious persons and/ or vehicles in their patrol areas, and file duty reports with the Service. They never leave their vehicles. Additional Duties: COPP volunteers are not restricted to patrolling. They also operate the community radar message board at key traffic zones throughout Halton and are often called upon by the HRPS to: • Assist in locating missing persons • Aid stranded motorists • Support police presence at fairs and festivals • Augment seat belt campaigns and other safety events • Take part in the Service’s annual Police Day and other Police Week activities
