Halterworth Primary School Year 5 Curriculum News - Summer 2014 Key Themes for Learning Key investigation: Exploration and Trade Around the World since the Tudors. In 1588 the Spanish Navy set off to invade England. This event – now known as ‘the Spanish Ar- mada’ is how we enter our study of the Tudor period. We will develop a clear understanding of life in those times, who ruled our country then and most importantly, how their exploration of the globe has shaped our mod- ern world. There is one particular ship involved in the Armada that will intrigue us— the Golden Hinde. Captained by Thomas Fleming, it carried the news of the arrival of the Armada to Drake and Howard at Plymouth. Of course, before Fleming, it was captained by Drake and we will be researching his explorations of the world in more detail. The Tudor period opened up the world to trade. Again we will flip back to modern times to com- pare modern day import/exporters. This new found knowledge will be tied together when we go on our trip to the Golden Hinde. LITERACY Firstly, we will study some older literature in the form of the great Tudor writer William Shake- speare’s play ‘Romeo and Juliet’. We will adapt it into a modern day version, create dramatic interpretations of key scenes and it will be the basis of our workshop when we visit the Globe Theatre in London. Then we will be read- ing our class book “The London Eye Mystery”. We will focus on character development and how different moods are created. GOLDEN HINDE This trip is fast approaching. Just a reminder that Miss Kerridge-Johns’ class are going on Thurs- day 1 May, and Mr Halton’s on Thursday 22 May. MUSIC In Music we will be looking at Tudor music and composing our own pieces for a Tudor dance. ART Making thumb pot clay models of Tudors— using portraits from artists of the day. NUMERACY We will be further developing our skills in: Mental calculation strategies Fractions, decimals and percentages Solving problems and puzzles Shape and space Money Properties of number and number se- quences Four rules PE We will be continuing to practise our Rock Chal- lenge dance in anticipation of the final on 18 June.
