Halls NewsWelcome to theMassey Halls of Residence
Talofa lava to all in the Massey University Halls family.
My name is Jason Auvaa and I am the Community Manager for the Halls ofResidence. I am only one of the many staff here at Massey who bids you a
warm welcome to the University, especially to those who have come fromfar and abroad. I hope that your stay within the Halls thus far has been anenjoyable one .
The last few weeks have been very busy with many of you who participatedin the Lets Get Going Programme. Hopefully this has made yourtransition to University life a little smoother.
So far we are into week 3 and already we have seen many of youparticipating in fun events such as Crazy Sports Day and the Relay for Life.A tremendous effort was put in by all the halls with record numbers turningup to the Relaya cause close to Masseys heart. There are more events
coming up such as the Touch Tournament and the Easter Egg Hunt.I encourage you all to get involved, its a fun way to get to know your fellowresidents.
By now the realities of your academic workload should have sunk in withupcoming assignments and tests. Dont forget about the PASS Programme(Peer Assisted Study Sessions) which is coordinated through the Centre forTeaching and Learning. It is specifically run for some first year papers. Eachsession is facilitated by a senior student who has done very well in thepaper. Look for the posters in your Hall for the timetable of PASS classes.
There are also WOW (Ways of Wellness) Workshops which are organisedby Student Counselling and Career Services. These seminars support your
development and academic success by introducing skills to make yourjourney through university easier, successful and memorable. Have a look atthe Workshop Timetable Brochure that was in your Halls Welcome Pack formore information.
If you have any questions, concerns or queries related to living in the halls, please talk to your RAs. They are very important people as they are yourfirst point of contact if you have any problems and questions. They have awealth of knowledge about the different services available on campus andcan refer you to the appropriate assistance you may need.
Remember that your priority is your studies. It is also an opportunity to
grow as a person where you will meet different people who have differentbackgrounds, values and interests. I encourage you to embrace thisdiversity.
At the time of writing this blurb many residents and Massey staff have beenaffected by the Christchurch earthquake and also recently the tragic tsunamiand earthquake in Japan. Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with you, your families and loved ones during this time.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENTCO-ORDINATORS
Introducing your CDCs. I hear you ask, what are CDCs?Well these guys put together the Community EventsProgramme for the Halls. They run things like the CrazySports Day, Touch Tourney, Kiwiana, the Halls Ball andloads more.
Vicky Blair is studying for a Post-Graduate Certificate inBusiness this year while working as a CDC. She playsEuropean Handball in her spare time as well as organisingevents for the Amnesty International Club at Massey. Thisis her second year as a CDC and she is really lookingforward to all the fun events, especially the Halls Ball andQuiz Night.
Jessica Fabian is a Masters student at Massey Universitymajoring in Veterinary Studies. She is on the MasseySoccer team as well as the Massey Maidens Rugby Team.Along with soccer and rugby, she also enjoys running and
biking. Previously an RA for Egmont Court during the 2010year, she is now underway in her first year as a CDC. She islooking forward to planning some great events and isexcited to see who claims the Gumboot Shield this year!
Anna Osborne is part way through her BSWork and hasbeen an RA twice before CraigLockhart and in Miro Hall.Annas role differs from that of Vicky and Jess as she spendsmore of her time doing administration work for the HallsCommunity Group. Anna makes the posters for the eventsand assists Vicky and Jess. Anna loves her life as a studentand is a member of the Massey University Fire Club.
In previous years, the gumboot competition wasrun as a Shield Challenge similar to (but slightlymore prestigious than) the Ranfurly Shield. Hallswould then challenge the Hall (that currently heldthe shield) to a competition with the winner taking
possession of the gumboot. Now the golden gumboot is retired and a newGumboot Shield has been commissioned and will berun as an inter-hall competition throughout theyear. All the points earned at main events run byHCG as well as placings in the first social leagueswill count towards the Gumboot competition.
Points are awarded for attendance and for placings. At the end of the year, the hall with the most pointswill be taken out for an extravagant meal in town. The hall will be given the opportunity of showing
off their Champion status amongst the other hallsaround Campus.
The Gumboot Shield is a new chapter in the Hallsof Residences history, creating friendly rivalry andadding more meaning and identity to each Hallindividually and within the whole community.

During O Week this year, HCG joined forces with
the Chaplaincy team to put on a Pancake and Games
Night on the Tuesday and Thursday of O-Week.
The Pancake and Games night was filled with
hundreds of pancakes with toppings one could only
dream about. This was followed by the main eventof the night -Speed Dating. Guys were
blindfolded as they met their potential mate(s).
Continuing into the evening was a wide range of
games were available
to be enjoyed as the
residents met other
people from around
campus. Those not
too stuffed from the
pancakes even gave
twister a go.
The International
Potluck Night saw
residents from all walks of the world come together
and share a dish from their home country. Some
dressed up in their traditional attire and some
International RAs even made a guest appearance
performing a traditional Nuiean dance. Later, the
chaplains hosted a quiz where residents presented a
question about their country or culture while others
had to guess the answer. It was a great way to learn,
but also enjoy the New Zealand chocolate bar prizes.
Concluding the evening, traditional kiwi desserts
were enjoyed, including pavlova and yes, you guessed
it, hokey pokey ice cream. Both nights were a huge
hit and a big thanks to those that cooked and shared
with everybody.

Crazy Sports Day was a hot one this year. All halls gathered on the McHardy Oval tocompete in various competitions for 50 Gumboot shield points. McHardy Hall had the homefield advantage and became the winners of Crazy Sports Day 2011. This win, however, wasnot an easy feat. With both McHardy Hall and City Court tied for 1st place, a Step to itcompetition was set in place where each team had to work together to walk with planksaround a cone and to the finish line. With McHardy Hall winning this match, City Court wasplaced in second while Totara hall took out third spot. Throughout the day, othernon-sporting events also took place which included a chant-off competition and somefree-style dancing. Atawhai Village took first place in the chant-off, followed by Walter Dyerthen Craiglockhart/Bindaloe. Other noted acrobatic performances were from MichaelPattemore from Tawa Hall and Jessica Fifield from Moginie Hall. The top dancers within thehalls were awarded to Sokula Vuatalevu from Craiglockhart for best female dancer andBarney Farrao from Ferguson Hall for the best male dancer. Also, best mascot was awarded toBrandon Roach from Totara. Check out all the pics and videos on Facebook!

Lastly please remember to practice safe sex I know thatyou are all trying to do the right thing but statistics haveshown that although people are aware they should usecondoms - a lot of the time they are choosing not to BADCHOICE.
Its not only unwanted pregnancy but also Chlamydia,Gonorrhoea, Herpes and HIV.
The main reason why people dont use a condom I WASDRUNK!!
Most people are good most of the time remember if youhave slept with one person with no condom you are alsosleeping with all that persons previous partners so if theyhave been with 4 people and those people had 2 partnerseach then you do the math and work out how many peopleyou have actually had unprotected sex with. Considering 1in 5 people have genital herpes you are playing a
dangerous game of Russian roulette!!!!To all the ladies out there, if you are not taking anycontraception you are at high risk for an unplannedpregnancy yes it does happen. Please come in and talkto a nurse or Dr about starting contraception there is thepill or depo injections if these dont suit then please cometalk to us as there are many options available.

STUDENT COUNSELLINGThose of you who attended the commencement ceremonywill have heard the after dinner speaker sing the praises offree counselling at university. Yes some things in lifeare still free even at university. For many students, not
just those who have recently moved to New Zealand, counselling is not necessarily something you may haveencountered before and many people still feel that they arestaunch and dont need to approach a counsellor perhaps through embarrassment or throughmisunderstanding, talking to a counsellor can be somewhatscary for people.
What is counselling?In the Student Counselling Service our stated objective isto assist students to minimise the impact of emotional orp s y c h o lo g ic a l d i f f i c u l t ie s o n a c a d e m ic
achievement.
A wide variety of issues will naturally crop up for all of usas we go through university and life that is normal. Mostof the time we will manage them with our own resourcesand, by so doing, develop additional skills and resilience! But sometimes reaching out to other people can beimportant as well.
Counselling also offers an opportunity to talk to someonewho will listen without criticism! Some people come tocounselling because they need a friendly ear, or a differentperspective on a situation or to develop some additional
strategies. It offers more than talking to a friend - the time isall yours to talk about what is important to you - and youwill not have to face the person the next day in class!
People use counselling for a variety of issues, and not justbecause there is something wrong with them. It offers asafe space to put into words the thoughts and feelings thatare inside you and in doing so, gain some understandingand control over them. Knowing when and how to reachout to other people and to accept help is a really importantskill in life!
Within a very few minutes, which will be discussed with
you, everything which happens in the session remainscompletely confidential so there is no fear of your family, your friends, the Halls staff, or anyone else even finding outthat you are making use of the Service.
How do I arrange it?
The Student Counselling Service is on Level 1 of theRegistry and shares a reception space with the MasseyMedical Centre. To make an appointment you should go tothe website (http://pncounselling.massey.ac.nz) and followthe links to the initial questionnaire.
We find it is really useful for both counsellor and client ifthis questionnaire is filled in comprehensively.Alternatively you can email [email protected] orcall extn 5533 (again the same as medical).
