7.1 Introduction to Packer ShoesHalliburton manufactures the
three followingtypes of packer shoes:
Flapper valve type855 Series
Poppet valve type852 Series
Cup type
7.1.1 Description and Application
The flapper valve and poppet valve type packershoes are
installed on the bottom of the casing stringas it is run in the
wellbore. This process is used forapplications where casing will be
set on top of aproducing formation completed as an
openholecompletion. The flapper and poppet valve packershoes can be
used for the following applications:
Packing off the open hole below the casing tohelp protect
low-pressure formations againstcement contamination
Floating and guiding casing to bottom
Allowing fluids to be circulated through thecasing before the
tool is set in the open hole
Both the flapper valve and poppet valve type packershoes allow
the well to be circulated while casing isbeing run in the hole or
at any time before the packerelement is set. Both types allow the
casing to befloated in the hole if desired. The 855-series
flappervalve tool equipped with an orifice tube will allow
thecasing to fill as it is being run in the wellbore. The
852-series (poppet) tool does not provide this fea-ture. Both
tools can be ordered with premium threadsand special casing grades
as customer service items(CSIs).
Cup-type packer shoes perform the same functionsas the flapper
and poppet valve types, except thecup-type packer shoe is most
often used in workoveroperations where new casing or tubing is set
insidedeteriorated outer casing. The cup-type packer shoehas either
drillable or pumpout seats.
7.1.2 Industry and HalliburtonGoverning Specifications
All packer shoe equipment manufactured by Halli-burton is
designed according to the applicable indus-try specifications
detailed in the following sections.
Copies of all API specifications, recommended prac-tices, and
bulletins can be ordered from API. Call202.682.8375 or write
to:
American Petroleum InstitutePublications and Distribution
Section1220 L Street NWWashington D.C. 20003
The type of packer shoe used depends on the wellgeometry and the
customers application. Each toolis designed for a different
application and eachrequires different operation procedures to
properlyperform for the well application.

7.1.2.1 API 5CTPetroleum and NaturalGas IndustriesSteel Pipes
for Use asCasing or Tubing for WellsThe API 5CT International
Standard specifies thetechnical delivery conditions for steel pipes
(i.e.material strength, chemical makeup of casing, tub-ing,
plain-end casing liners, and pup-joints) andaccessories. This
International Standard applies tothe following connections in
accordance with ISO10422 or API Spec 5B:
Short round thread casing (STC), commonlyreferred to as short
thread coupling
Long round thread casing (LC), commonlyreferred to as LTC for
long thread coupling
Buttress thread casing (BC), commonly re-ferred to as BTC for
buttress thread coupling
Extreme-line casing (XC)
Non-upset tubing (NU)
External upset tubing (EU or EUE)
Integral joint tubing (IJ)
For such connections, this International Standardspecifies the
technical delivery conditions for cou-plings and thread
protection.
For pipes covered by this International Standard, the sizes,
masses, wall thicknesses, grades, andapplicable end finishes are
defined.
This International Standard may also be applied totubulars with
connections not covered by ISO/APIstandards, such as proprietary
threaded connec-tions.
7.1.2.2 API 5BSpecifications forThreading, Gauging, and
ThreadInspection of Casing, Tubing, and LinePipe
ThreadsSpecification API 5B covers dimensions and mark-ing
requirements for API Master thread gauges.Additional product
threads and thread gauges, aswell as instruments and methods for
the inspectionof threads for line pipe, round thread casing,
but-
tress casing, and extreme-line casing connectionsare
included.
The inspection procedures for measurements of taper, lead,
height, and angle of thread are applicable tothreads with 11 turns
per inch or less. All threaddimensions shown without tolerances are
related tothe basis for connection design and are not subject
tomeasurement to determine acceptance or rejectionof product.
7.1.2.3 NACE MR0175MaterialRequirementsSulfide
Cracking-Resistant Metallic Materials for OilfieldEquipmentThis
standard presents metallic material require-ments for resistance to
sulfide stress cracking (SSC)for petroleum production, drilling,
gathering andflowline equipment, and field processing facilities
tobe used in H2S-bearing hydrocarbon service. Thisstandard is
applicable to the materials and/or equip-ment specified (or by
equivalent standards or speci-fications of other agencies).
7.1.2.4 ASTM C109Standard TestMethod for Compressive Strength
ofHydraulic Cement MortarsThis standard covers the test method used
to deter-mine compressive strength of a cement mortar usinga 2-in.
cube specimen to determine compliance withHalliburton
specifications.
7.1.2.5 Halliburton SpecificationsThe following Halliburton
specification summariesrelate specifically to Halliburton
equipment. Theseproprietary specifications outline how

Figure 7.2.A855-series packer shoe
Halliburton 855-series formation packer shoes withflapper valves
(Figure 7.2.A) help protect low-pres-sure formations from pressure
surges while casing isbeing run. They also help prevent
contamination ofthe cement caused by gas pressure below the
forma-tion packer. Figure 7.2.B shows a 855-series forma-tion
packer shoe.
Three operating configurations are possible withthis formation
packer shoe:
Run with the flapper valve closed to float thecasing in to the
hole
Run with an orifice tube to let the casing fillwhile running in
the hole (Section 7.3, Figure7.3.A)
Run as a collar by removing the plastic guidenose
A setting ball and a latchdown plug and baffle arepackaged with
each assembly. A latchdown plug isrequired because the
flapper-valve packer shoe doesnot contain a backpressure valve to
keep the cementin place. The maximum recommended
differentialpressure across the mechanical packer is 1,000 psi
attemperatures below 200F.
The standard 855-series packer shoe is manufac-tured with API
8rd casing threads. Premium threadsother than API 8rd and special
grade casing gradesmay be ordered as a CSI.
The standard 855-series packer may be converted toself-filling
with the addition of an orifice tube self-fillunit.
Operation and installation instructions (No.100078051-NX,
855.02899) for the 855-series packershoe are packaged with each
packer shoe assembly.Because most 855-series packer shoes are
drilled outafter completion of the cementing operation,
drilloutinstructions are also included in the operation
in-structions.
Dimensional data with maximum and minimumrecommended hole size,
latchdown baffle ID, andlatchdown plug part numbers are proved in
Table7.2.A and Figure 7.2.C.

7.4 852-Series Packer Shoes and CollarsThe 852-series packer
shoe (Figure 7.4.A) providesan economical method to pack off and
help protect alow-pressure formation from cement
contamination. These packer shoes can be used to float casing to
thebottom, but they do not provide for casing fill whilegoing into
the well. The inverted check valve at thebottom of the packer shoe
allows well fluids to circu-late any time before the packer is
set.
The 852-series packer collar (Figure 7.4.B) can beinstalled in
the casing string above the shoe joint tohelp protect a lower
formation from contaminationduring cementing. Several joints of
casing or linercan be installed below the packer collar. This
collarmay also be used for the following applications:
Set liners and perforated pipe
Set screen in saltwater disposal wells andwaterflooding
projects
Cement wells where full-hole cementing is re-quired
Operators can run a packer shoe/collar below an EScementer by
placing the cementer shutoff baffle oneor more joints above the
formation packer shoe andcollar. The shutoff baffle provides a seat
for theshutoff plug while still allowing the packer settingball to
pass through it to the tool. A wellbore sche-matic is shown in
Figure 7.4.C.
The 852-series packer shoe and collar are two sepa-rate product
lines and cannot be converted in the fieldfrom one tool to the
other. Standard tools are avail-able with API 8rd casing threads to
be compatiblewith the lightest weight H-40 grade casing.
Othercasing threads and grades are available upon request.
The 852-series packer shoes and collars are notrecommended for
use in highly deviated or horizon-tal wellbores. The 852-series
packer shoe is rated fora maximum differential pressure of 1,000
psi at200F when set in a competent hole within thepacker maximum
and minimum hole-size restric-tion. Operating instructions (No.
10077842-NX,852.02001) for 852-series packer shoes and

7.5 Cup-Type Casing Packer ShoesCup-type casing packer shoes
(Figure 7.5.A)are used in cased holes, but perform the samefunction
as packer shoes set in open hole. Thesetools are most often used in
workover opera-tions where new casing or tubing is set
insidedeteriorated or damaged casing above an exist-ing pay zone.
In these situations, cementing aninner string of pipe while keeping
cement off theexisting pay zone(s) may be required.
Cup-type casing packer shoes have higher differ-ential pressure
capabilities across the packerand can fit in tighter annulus
spaces. These toolsare not kept in Duncan stock, and are
availableby special order only.
Cup-type casing packer shoes have either drill-able seats or
pumpout seats (Figure 7.5.B).Pumpout seats may be drilled out if
necessary. Both types come with an operating ball and alatchdown
plug. The pumpout seats can savetime and drilling costs because no
drillout isnecessary after the cement job is complete.Wellbore
schematics for both types are illus-trated in Figures 7.5.C and
7.5.D.
Operating and installation instructions (No.855.00100A,
