1 Half-day Seminar – 2 June 2012 (Saturday) Advanced Technologies and Equipment for Construction of Transport Infrastructure Background The Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) is a learned society concerned specifically with the planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of land-based transport systems and infrastructure. It aims to provide a forum for the exchange of technical information and views on highways and transport policy; to provide specialist advice to government and other bodies; to make roads safer for the travelling public; and to encourage training and professional development to meet today's requirements. Every year CIHT Hong Kong Branch organises a half-day seminar to provide a platform for academics, professionals and other interested parties to exchange views on selected technical topics. Professionals and students from University, Consultant and Contractor, as well as those related to transport or highway industries, will be invited. Theme Hong Kong has one of the most successful transport systems in the world, with around 2,000km of highway and 240km of railway. To cope with the growth in population and economy, the Government have been planning and implementing new roads/highway as well as passenger railway. During implementation, there are challenges such as working in confined space or busy life traffic, tight construction programme, and satisfying the requirement of different stakeholders. To overcome challenges, contractors make use of different high technology or equipment so that the projects can be implemented at a quicker pace, at a safer and more environmentally friendly manner. The theme of this half-day seminar “Advanced Technologies and Equipment for Construction of Transport Infrastructure” aims to introduce how contractors overcome the construction constraints by making use of the latest technologies and construction plants. This seminar would be useful for both engineers and contractor to recognize the latest development of the construction technologies and construction plants and equipments. The speakers will give a brief account on the problems they are/will be facing and how they implement the construction works with the aids of various technologies and plants. It is meant to be an interesting and practical seminar in which project implementers will share their invaluable experience of construction of major transport infrastructure in Hong Kong and overseas.
