The San Andreas Fault is a 810 mile long fault line that streches through California and is divided into three segments, each characterizing different degrees of earthquake risk.

What is a Fault? What is the SAF (San Andreas Fault)?
The San Andreas fault’s area is split with the North American Plate and the Pacific Plate. The crack in between the plates is called a Fault.
The San Andreas Fault is a transform fault. A transform fault.
A transform fault is caused when two techtonic plates slide horizontally.
The Pacific Plate and the North American Plate are two of the of the many techtonic plates that are always moving. But parts of these plates can get stuck. When these parts get stuck it makes it hard for the Pacific and North Atlantic Plates to move. When this occurs the plates will make a crack in order to seperate. This creates an earthquake.
How is an Earthquake measured?
An Earthquake is measured through the Richter Scale.
The Richter Scale is “a measure of the amplitude of the seismic waves. The moment magnitude of an earthquake is a measure of the amount of energy released- an amount that can be estimated from seismograph readings.” - (Measuring Earthquakes)
The San Adreas Fault forms the tectonic boundary between the Pacific, and North American Plates.
The motion of the Pacific Plate creates compressional forces to the West of the Fault line, leading to the formation of the Transverse Ranges in Souther California, and to the Santa Cruz Mountains.
