Members are issued decals to enter Membership Beach. Decals must be attached and dis-
played on the driver’s side of the car or on the back window. Each family is entitled to two de-
cals (one for each adult in the household, and if necessary, a third for a caregiver). Decals will

decals will be available only at the Beach.
When you arrive at the Beach, the gate guards will check you in. If you have not yet picked up
your decal, the gate guard will allow you to do so. If there are no gate guards at the time you
arrive, please check in at the Guard Shack.
GUEST POLICY
Members receive a certain number of free car guest passes for the summer that you can gift to a
friend or family to use at any time in the summer. Otherwise, Members are welcome to bring
guests to the Beach throughout the summer for a fee for any person over 2 years old. Guests
will be charged to your household account and you will receive a bill at the end of each month.
Restrictions: 30 guests maximum per summer, and 5 guests per day to regulate the parking and
Beach traffic. If you plan on having more than 5 guests, you must schedule an outing (details
below). Guests may not partake in any daily activity requiring registration/sign ups.
OUTING PRIVILEGES & BIRTHDAY PARTIES
Members are invited to use the Beach facilities to have birthday parties, family gatherings, and
group functions under our pavilion (Julia’s Place) or carport. Members must speak to the
Membership Beach Director or Asst. Director in advance to schedule an outing or birth-
day party. There will be a site fee charged for location plus regular guest fees for non-members
(guests for outings do not count toward your total guest count). There is an additional charge to
“Rent a Lifeguard” to run activities for an hour. The ‘outing’ group must adhere to all the Mem-
bership Rules. Outings will only be allowed if they do not conflict with any Membership activi-
ty and are at the Director’s discretion. The number of outings at one time is restricted due to
space.

GENERAL INFORMATION
WEATHER
On rainy days, the Beach may open late or
close early.
In the event of thunder and/or lightning, the
water will close with one long whistle as a
safety precaution and will remain closed for
20 minutes after the last sign of thunder or
lightning. In such cases, Members may be
asked to move to their cars.
Membership Beach will close in the event of
lightning storms or severe weather warnings.
For updates on Beach closures, please call
the Guard Shack. The voicemail will
indicate whether or not the Beach will open.
SAFETY COMMUNICATION
Lifeguards use whistles to communicate with each other and patrons. Please read below and
make sure you and your children know what to do in such cases.
3 long whistles - Lost Child Search. Everyone must clear the water.
2 long whistles - Emergency alert to other lifeguards. Everyone must clear the water.
1 long whistle - Everyone must clear/can re-enter the water.
1 short whistle - Attention! Look to lifeguard for further instruction.
Occasionally the swimming area is cleared to make safety checks, for weather, or to conduct
rescue drills. Please have your children check in with you during these times.
In the event that 911 must be called, please inform a staff member and they will call from
the landline. If there is no staff member in sight, please do not hesitate to call.

BEACH GUIDELINES
Please familiarize yourself with the rules listed below. You, your family, and any guests you
may bring are responsible for following the Beach rules. Your cooperation will help us to
provide you with a safe, clean and enjoyable recreation area.
Let’s Go Swimming
Swimming should be enjoyed at Membership Beach in designated, buoyed areas, and only
when a Membership Beach Lifeguard is on duty.
Swimming under the dock is very dangerous and is not permitted.
Flotation devices are allowed only in shallow bins, unless in swim class.
Due to a Board of Health regulation, anyone with open wounds, bandages, diarrhea, or
communicable disease is restricted from swimming.
Please do not use the swimming area for washing children. The restrooms are equipped
with changing facilities.
Please make room for lessons so students can learn to swim with fewer distractions.
All bathers are asked to wear swimsuits. Children in diapers are required to wear plastic
pants over their diapers. Plastic pants are sold in the guard shack.
A Day at the Beach
Parental supervision of all children is required. No child under 16 years of age may be left
at the Beach unattended. Please watch your children attentively whenever they are in the
water and be conscious of their whereabouts at all times.
Please walk on the docks as they can be slippery. Toddlers must be supervised at all times
on the docks and around the water.
For safety reasons, please set up umbrellas and day tents away from the water’s edge.
There is no overnight storage for beach equipment. All personal property is left at the
Beach at your own risk.
Enjoy your music with headphones.
Smoking is allowed only in the designated “smoking area.”
The geese, turtles, snakes and other critters are wild animals. Please do not feed, touch, hurt
or try to catch them.
Food Time
We are a family beach. No alcoholic beverages are allowed.
To keep pesky animals off the sand, food is not allowed on the Beach.
To make sure all patrons can enjoy their meals, please do not reserve a table for future use.
Due to severe food allergies, Peanut-free Zones are designated by red tables.
Please help to keep the Beach clean by throwing
litter in the receptacles provided.
Gone Fishin’
Please fish in designated fishing area or in row
boats and canoes. Please do not fish from the
docks or ramps.
“Catch and Release” is the Hale way!
Children should not have knives in tackle boxes,
please.
Thanks for your consideration!

BOATING GUIDELINES
All persons using the boats must wear life jackets for the entire time they are in the
boat. Life jackets must be the appropriate size and be fastened. If you need assistance
with sizing, please do not hesitate to ask a lifeguard.
Due to various intrusive algae that can be carried on boats, boating
is permitted only in boats owned and maintained by Hale.
Please remain 100 feet from buoy lines that are established as the
safety limits of the swimming area.
Boaters must not beach and exit boat outside of the Membership
Beach boating area, except in an emergency.
All boats must return immediately to the Beach at the first sign of
thunder, lightning or at the sound of three whistles. In these situa-
tions, you may dock outside of boating area, or on another shore.
Boat restrictions may apply in high wind.
The dragging of arms and legs overboard or swimming from the boat can result in injury.
Boaters must not stand in, jump out of, rock the boats, or attempt to ram other boats.
If a boat tips over, stay with the boat. Move to the Beach side of the boat and signal for
help.
Only Members on the sailing list may use the sailboats. Speak to boating instructors about
how to get on the list. Sailors must completely rig and de-rig the boat.
Please leave the boat tidy for the next user.
All boats must be returned to the Beach 30 minutes before the Beach closes.
On busy days, please be considerate of others by limiting your boating usage.
Adults over 18 may take a child of any age boating. The adult is responsible for the child.
Stand Up Paddleboards (SUPs):
SUPs must stay within sight of the Beach.
If you find you cannot make it back due to wind, place paddle on the board, lay down on
your stomach and use arms to make it back to shore.
Children under 8 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
USE OF BOATS BY CHILDREN
For a child to take out a boat on his/her own, the child must have parental permission, plus
pass the Deep End Test for some boats (see page 7).
Children under the age of 13 are not permitted to take out the sailboats without supervision.
The pond is big and some coves are hidden. Parents are advised to set clear boundaries.

WATER TRAMPOLINE GUIDELINES
The Water Trampoline is one of the most popular activities at the Beach for those Members
who have passed the Deep End Test (see below for DET details). Please note the following
guidelines:
All persons using the water trampoline must wear life jackets. Life jackets must be the
appropriate size and be fastened. If you need assistance with sizing, please do not hesi-
tate to ask a lifeguard.*
In rough surface water conditions, during storms, or when there is lightning, staff may tem-
porarily close the trampoline.*
Only 8 people are allowed in the water
trampoline roped off area at a time.
The water trampoline is not recommended for
children under 6 years of age.*
To prevent fatigue and ensure everyone enjoys
the fun, a limit of 20 minutes for every 2 hours is
imposed on all jumpers.
Each person may only sign up herself and one
other person on the sign-up sheet. First and last
names are required.
Always enter the water feet first.*
Do not attempt flips, somersaults or other acrobatic maneuvers from the water trampoline.*
The water trampoline should never be used under the influence of alcohol or drugs.*
Never swim or play under or around the water trampoline attachments.*
Inappropriate behavior will result in loss of water trampoline time.
During the week, sign-up sheets for 2 hour blocks go up on the bulletin at 9:50 a.m., 2:50
p.m., 4:50 p.m. On weekends, the sheets go up upon request.
The water trampoline roped off area will close one hour before the Beach closes.
When it is your turn:
Please put on a lifejacket, and go to the dock near the trampoline. A lifeguard will supervise
the switch over.
*Rules of Rave Sports, the manufacturer of Hale’s water trampoline.
DEEP END TEST
Children 12 and under must take the DET to go on the water trampoline, kayaks, stand up
paddleboards, and sailboats.
To pass the DET, children must:
Jump into deep water.
Swim 4 lengths of front crawl (with face in the water, demonstrating side breathing
and endurance) without stopping or touching the side except to correct alignment.
Tread water for 2 minutes.
Any Hale lifeguard may administer the test.
Those who pass will receive a wrist band that they must wear when participating in any
activity requiring DET and will be added to a list for future reference.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS
Closed toe shoes are recommended for this program. No sign-ups are required. All nature
programs meet near the guard shack.
Nature Nuts I
Pre-school children are naturally ‘nuts’ about nature. To
foster this interest, our nature specialist offers this pro-
gram exploring the Beach and beyond. Emphasis is
placed on using the five senses to ask questions and dis-
cover the natural wonders of the outdoors. It’s also a
great, safe way for kids ages 3-5 to learn their way
around Membership Beach.
Nature Nuts II
The older Nature Nuts program is for kids ages 6-10, and is intended to foster a respect and ap-
preciation for the environment using hands-on activities, observations and trail games. Most
days will involve a challenging hike or activity.
Nature Explorers
Children of all ages are welcome. We will hike far and wide to see exciting sites such as Bear
Cave, Coyote Rock, and Renegade Island. It is great fun and parents will love it too!
ARTS AND CRAFTS
1. Children will meet with instructors or volunteers at
the path next to the bulletin board and go up to the
arts and crafts area.
2. The arts and crafts area is off limits when no instruc-
tor is present.
3. Children under the age of four should be accompa-
nied by an adult.
FISHING
Members can fish from rowboats, canoes or the waters edge in the fishing area. No State Fish-
ing License is required. Use of live bait is not allowed. If at all possible, return all fish un-
harmed to the water as we encourage “Catch and Release.” Parent supervision is required at
all times in the fishing area as equipment is sharp and dangerous. We request that children
do not have knives in their tackle boxes and use scissors to cut line. Please be careful when car-
rying the fishing rods at the Beach as hooks catch easily.
ACTIVITY INFORMATION

TEEN & GUPPY GANG PROGRAM
16
We hope you enjoy your stay at Membership Beach. Below is a list of additional explana-
tions to commonly broken rules, and commonly asked questions.
Food on the Beach: No food or drink besides water is allowed on the Beach. Small snacks and
boxed drinks are considered food and drink! Food and drink on the Beach encourages wild ani-
mals to come in search of food, and leave a mess. Tables and grills are available in the picnic
area.
Toddlers and Babies: Rubber pants are sold at the Guard Shack to cover water diapers and
bathing suits for little ones who are not yet potty trained. Because they don’t have an elastic
waist, water diapers can leak. Please help us by using these rubber pants on your children.
Every year, this is a major concern for Members. Additionally, please do not change diapers on
the Beach or in the picnic area. Members and staff are very concerned about health issues,
cleanliness and safety. We provide changing facilities in the bathrooms.
Bathrooms: Please supervise young children in the bathrooms. Too often there are “accidents”
in the bathroom while a parent is on the Beach. Please help us by educating your children on
how to be responsible in communal facilities.
Water Control: The pond water is tested every week by Lapuck Laboratories. A few times each
summer, the water is treated for algae growth.
Peanut Free Zone: When facing the water from the Picnic Area, the section to the right of the
path is a Peanut Free Zone. We’ve made this more obvious by painting the tops of the tables
red. Please help enforce this rule for the safety of our members with allergies.
Communication: Emails are sent to keep Members informed about what is going on at the
Beach. If you are not receiving emails, check with the Director to ensure that Hale has your
correct email address. All information about activities is also posted on the bulletin board.
Telephone: If you call the Beach when we are open and get voicemail, it means that somebody
is on the line. It would be best to try again.
Sailboats: We take great care of our sailboats. They are expensive to buy and maintain but are
a great addition to our Beach. Permission is required to use the sailboats. Members must be on
the sailing list to take out the boats. To be added to the list, you must demonstrate your skills to
a boating instructor or the Director. Members must completely rig and de-rig the boat. The life-
guards are not expected to do this and many do not know how to do this. Guests may not take
out the sailboats.
Questions/Problems: If you have a question or suggestion, please speak to the Membership
Beach Director or Asst. Director at the Beach or call them at the Beach. They do not work at
the Main Office in the summer. The Membership Beach Director, Asst. Director, or a Supervi-

LAST BUT NOT LEAST
H A L E R E S E R V AT I O N is a private, non-profit educational organization that manages over 1,137 acres of woodlands, including four ponds and over twenty miles of trails in Westwood and Dover, Massachusetts. Hale is most widely recognized for its summer day camp programs which annually serve over 4,400 children from 70 communities in the Greater Boston area. Hale Reservation also offers a family program, outdoor and environmental education experiences for children and adults, and open space for casual recreational use.The essence of Hale Reservation can be found in Robert Sever Hale’s original desire for the organization he founded in 1918. The current programs and land management practices are the legacy of his wish “to provide education which will develop intelligent, capable and responsible citizens” and to use the land “so long as it is charitable and benevolent in nature.” The goal of today’s programs is to develop intelligent leaders and environmentally educated citizens. We believe that the diversity of the natural environment must be reflected in the diversity of the people who experience Hale Reservation, and we strive to provide programs and opportunities for people of any race, background, religion, or economic status.
