Background to HajjAdam and EveThe symbolism of Hajj goes way back to the

beginning to Adam, the first man.

The story begins with a small mountain in the plain of Arafat which is known as the Mount of Mercy.

It was here Adam and Eve were forgiven for their sins.

For Muslims to be on that mountain on one of the days of Hajj is important and a main part of the Hajj ritual.

What is Hajj?Hajj is the fifth basic duty of Islam.

Hajj literally means to have the intention of going on pilgrimage .Hajj is a visit to the Kabah in Makkah during the 12th Month of the Islamic calendar – Dhul Hijjah.Hajj is an act of worship to please Allah.

In Islamic terminology hajj is to go to Kabah at Makkah to perform the prescribed religious acts in specific days .

As said in the holy Quran” accomplish hajj and Umrah to please Allah “(2:196)

What do they wear?

The cloth of the pilgrim is known as ‘ihram'. White cloth is worn so all people are equal, whether rich or poor.

Restrictions to be followed while wearing

Ihram .1. Wearing sewn clothes 2. Wearing of shoes which cover the

raised bone .3. Covering of head of face 4. shaving, cutting and trimming of

hair.5. Cutting of nails.6. Using abusing language

7. Using hair oil or any kind of perfume.

From where pilgrims must be wearing ihram?

Pilgrims must wear their Ihram before Miqaat .

It is a boundary where intention is made and one cannot cross without wearing ihram.

From Miqaat the pilgrims start to say Talbiyah .

First day of hajj (8th of zilhajj)

Put on ihram again(if the pilgrim has performed hajj-e-tammatu), and declare one’s intention of performing Hajj. Perform tawaf of the Kabah and say's, if not performed earlier and leave for Mina early in the morning. Stay overnight in Mina. This day is known as the day of reflection

Second day of hajj (9th of zilhajj)

On this day they proceed to the plain of Arafat, there the pilgrims stand with devotion and listen to the sermon , praying and asking God for forgiveness.

This day is known as the day of forgiveness .staying at arafat is known is waquf-e- arafat which is the majr oblication of hajj .

As said by the holy prophet (s):haj is to halt at arafat .

In the evening Pilgrims move to Muzdalifah, They rest there at night & collect small pebbles for stoning in Mina.

• Then pilgrims proceed to Mina and throw small stones at the satan pillars. They Offer sacrifice this day is known as Yaum-ul-nahr and have the hair shaved or trimmed. Then pilgrims proceed to Makkah perform tawaf -e-ifadah/ziarat after this they offer two rakats at maqam-e-ibrahim .Then the pilgrims do saee .

Fourth day of hajj (11th and 12th of zilhajj)

• On this day the pilgrims throw seven pebbles on each pillar twice this can be followed to 12th or 13th of zilhajj as well this act is called as Rmi.(also called Rmi-Jimar)

Fifth day of hajj (13th of zilhajj)

Then the pilgrims Return the same day to Makkah and perform tawaf, then drink the water of Zamzam. This ends the Hajj.

Arafat: A plain in the desert where pilgrims spend the day asking for forgiveness.

Eid-ul-Adha: The festival at the end of the Hajj.

Hajj: The pilgrimage to Mecca and the fifth pillar of Islam.

Hajja: Woman who has completed the Hajj.

Hajji: Man who has completed the Hajj.

Ihram: Clothes worn by pilgrims. The two sheets worn by male pilgrims.

Kabah: The cubic building built by the prophet Abraham(pbuh) in the centre of the sacred mosque in Mecca.

Mecca: One of the holy cities of Islam in Saudi Arabia.

Mina: A campsite in the desert 9 miles from Mecca. Pilgrims throw stones at the three pillars here.

Pilgrimage: A journey to a holy place, for religious purposes

Safa, Marwa: Two mounts between which pilgrims run - situated inside the Sacred Mosque.

Tawaf: ritual circling of the Kabah in an anti clockwise direction.
