Get out your hat. Put on your sunscreen. Fill up your water bottle. It’s June and it’s time to head for the desert.
As this month begins we leave Leviticus behind with its animal sacrifices and indoor worship and we head outside Bamdibar, into the wilderness. The more structured rituals of
spring’s Leviticus give way to summer’s wander-ing in the desert. Our cycle of Torah readings accurately reflects our feelings as we move into the long, languid days of June, July and August.
While there is a temptation to hurriedly plan trips and pack the days with adventures, summer wanderings can be best suited to reflect on the year with its joys and its doubts. What were my successes this past year? In what areas do I still need to grow?
The heat of desert wandering requires us to set aside a portion of each day for rest in the shade. Restoring our strength means finding a way to replenish that which has been depleted over the course of our journeys. Summer is an oasis, a time to slow down and savor, to quench and repair.
We do that in many different ways – we pray, we meditate, we devote time to nurture relation-ships, we read, we walk in the sun, we sit in the shade, we nurture our spirits, and we wander “aimfully”. This summer I will be wandering to a family reunion, the beach, and Manhattan, each of which nurtures me in its own way. I am look-ing forward to checking out an interesting shul for Shabbat in New York, to reading a stack of books for pleasure and growth, to cooking Israeli food with my friends, and to praying outside by the ocean.
Whatever way you wander and in whatever direction that wandering leads you, I wish you a long, languid summer full of replenishment, restoration and rest.

Shavuot commemorates the giving of the Torah, the content and meaning of Judaism for each of us and our world. It also marks the brighter and pleasant days of spring turning into summer, of a world turning fresh and green with life and beauty.
At Chizuk Amuno, Shavuot is a joyous festival of Torah study, creative expression, and happy celebration.

Tikkun Leil Shavuot – Shavuot Study Evening“Finding My Place in Torah”
Where do I fit in? Where’s my place in Torah? How do I under-stand the texts of our Jewish heritage in a personal way? Come sit around a table with 8-10 other students, meet three teachers who will introduce you to three books of the Bible. Study together, in-terpret together, learn together, question together. Discover your place in Torah! Our teachers include Rabbi Debi Wechsler, Rabbi Moshe Schwartz, Hazzan Manny Perlman, Dr. Paul Schneider, Dr. Moshe Shualy, and Rabbi Michael Meyerstein.
After an engaging hour of learning and discussion, enjoy Shavuot desserts with synagogue friends before Rabbi Shulman’s late night study session which will consider these questions: What’s my connection to Jewish tradition? How do I understand my Jewish identity? What perspectives and experiences guide my attitude toward being Jewish? What are the variety of Jewish options and opinions available to me? Judaism is an interpre-tive tradition, our heritage to understand for meaning and life purpose. “These and these are the words of the living God,” teach our rabbis.

SYNCOPATION III is
scheduled for June
19 at 4:00 p.m. in the
Chizuk Amuno Sanc-
tuary. This concert will
take place the first
weekend following
kaddish for my par-
ents in their memory.
My three cantorial
brothers and I, along
with John Warren and
some special guests, will sing the music of the Big Band Era. Some of
you may not know that our beloved father used to sing with Tommy
Dorsey and Harry James before enlisting in the Marines at 17.
Don’t miss your chance to hear John Warren, an accomplished actor,
singer, songwriter, guitarist, and sought after vocalist. He has done
off camera vocals for such television programs as “Silver Spoons,
“General Hospital,” “Who’s the Boss?” “Facts of Life,” and “Married with
Children.” He has also appeared on the Tonight Show with Al Greene.
Our musically esteemed Chizuk Amuno member Henry Kornblatt
has put together the Guy Lombardovinsky Band. Henry will again be
the band leader and play trumpet. Henry has backed up musicians
including Peter nero. He currently performs with combos “Salt
Peanuts,” “Workshop Jazz,” and, previously, with the Baltimore Jazz
Alliance Big Band.
Other distinguished members of the Guy Lombardovinsky and his
Royal Amunos include saxophonist and composer Russell Kirk. Russell
traveled with the USO to entertain our troops, performing across
several continents including Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. He
has played on Saturday Night Live and with many celebrated artists
and ensembles including the Temptations, the 4 Tops, Tommy Dorsey
Orchestra, to name a few.
Our trombonist is Mike Weber. He studied Jazz Theory and Improvisa-
tion with Jazz legend and patriarch of the Marsalis family. Jazz pianist
and educator Harry Appelman has performed on concert stages
throughout five continents. He is a member of the Afro Bob Alliance
who were the winners of a 2008 Grammy Music Award. He was a final-
ist in 1987 and 1988 in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano
Competition.
Guitarist Skip Grasso has performed in shows including “Caberet” and
“Grease” and has accompanied performers as diverse as Ethel Ennis
and trumpeter Randy Brecker. He has appeared on the Don Junker
Big Band recording “Junkyard Dog” as well as the Hank Levy Alumni
Band’s “An Odd-Time Was Had by All.”
tom Hensler will be our upright and electric bass player. He has been
the top area bassist and recording artist for over 40 years in almost
every style and genre imaginable.
Our drummer neal Feldman is a real “hit” performer. Neal goes by the
nickname Bam. His repertoire includes country, classic rock, blues, and
jazz and has performed with opera and ballet companies.
I am also pleased to announce the return of singer and lyricist nova
Peele. Nova has shared the stage with Roberta Flack, Al Greene, and
Regina Belle. She was the opening performer for the O’Jays.
We also welcome back Kassie Kremens from Wisconsin. Kassie has
performed extensively on stage in musical theater, in various musical
venues as well as a voice over artist and session vocalist.
This concert will be the first time that my brothers and I will be singing
without our father and guest appearance of our mother (of blessed
memories), and in their memory we will be doing their favorite songs.
We are grateful for the sponsorship of SYNCOPATION III by The
Leonard and Phyllis Attman Music Fund. Their generosity has
provided SYNCOPATION III to be free and open to the public.

a nEw Siddur foR ShaBBat anD fEsTivalsSiddur Lev ShalemWe are excited to announce that following study, conversation with
congregants, and careful review of a new prayer book for use in
Conservative synagogues, the Ritual Committee and Board of Trustees
enthusiastically voted to adopt Siddur Lev Shalem, a companion to
Mahzor Lev Shalem which we use during the High Holy Days, as our
Shabbat and Festival prayerbook. We will introduce this new Siddur
during Summer Shul in July. In August, we will begin using the new Siddur in the sanctuary. We
will continue to use our current Siddur Sim Shalom for weekday minyan services.
Siddur Lev Shalem is a tool we may use to invigorate the prayer experience, empowering indi-
viduals by offering clear instructions, explanations of the context of each prayer and transliterations
for those who do not know Hebrew. Designed for use by individuals, as well as for congregations, in
both the home and the synagogue, Siddur Lev Shalem (meaning “full, content heart”) includes both
the traditional Shabbat and festival prayers and those written by modern poets and writers.
The siddur draws from more than 500 different sources – with writings from contemporary
authors – and includes ancient blessings that date back to the first millennium in the land
of Israel, as well as traditions from the full array of Jewish cultures – North African, Italian,
Sephardic, Middle Eastern, Ashkenazi – across the range of Jewish history from ancient times to
the contemporary.
This siddur has been expressly designed to meet people where they are, whether at
synagogue or at home, religiously or spiritually. There are many features to explore in this new
siddur including a beautiful, prayerful translation that faithfully renders the Hebrew.

Every Tuesday night Chizuk Amuno comes alive with the curiosity, learning, friendship, and strong opinions of our high school community. Netivon, Chizuk Amuno’s program for KSDS graduates, and Achshav, the joint Chizuk Amuno – Beth El program for religious school graduates, provide high school students with the opportunity to strengthen their Hebrew, learn about Israel, discuss contemporary Jewish issues, and of course enjoy great snacks and reconnecting with friends.
The year’s Netivon and Achshav program closed with a delicious Chinese dinner and some opportunities to reflect on the year’s learning. Many of the students shared how grateful they are for the opportunities Netivon and Achshav give to strengthen Hebrew language skills, discuss important Jewish issues, and be part of a teen Jewish community.
“Netivon is, in a word, awesome. It’s community. It’s learning. To put it simply, it’s Jewish.” (12th grade student)
“Thank you, Netivon for being my lifeline into Jewish life in this secular, crazy, stressful world. I cannot even begin to express my gratitude.” (11th grade student)
“I like Netivon because I get to catch up and socialize with my friends from Schechter.” (10th Grade student)
“I joined Achshav because I wanted to travel to Israel and to continue to see my Hebrew school friends. However, it became much more than that. I loved all of the classes like learning Hebrew and loved the opportunity to go to AIPAC. There isn’t another way I would spend my Tuesday nights.” (10th grade student)
“Achshav gives me an opportunity to expand my Jewish knowledge beyond Hebrew School. The learning and travel opportunities through Achshav make it even more worth it.” (10th grade student)
Our teen’s participation in Netivon and Achshav distinguishes them as members of an elite group that understands that Jewish
learning is a life time commitment. We would particularly like to recognize our graduating 12th graders, who have for the past four years taken the time out of their busy lives to come together on Tuesday nights and commit themselves to their Jewish learning. We wish them, and all of our Netivon and Achshav students, an amazing, restful, and fun summer. We are already looking forward to Netivon and Achshav 2016-2017!
