June 2010

I wonder if it would be possible to include a letter of thanks in your next village news journal to acknowledge the generosity of the community in supporting our recent jazz night and auction in aid of Acorns Hospice, at the Community Centre when we managed to raise £2300. It was an overwhelming response and much appreciated by everyone involved in raising money for this well deserving cause.

Many thanks, Helen Raphael.

Dear Editor

Hagley Surgery Travel AdviceVaccinations - ensure you have appropriate vaccinations, in good time, before departure.

Malaria - take malaria prevention medication if travelling to a malaria risk area.

Diarrhoea - affects a high proportion of travellers, go prepared with sachets to replace lost salts and fluids (available at chemist).

Insurance - the European Health Insurance Card may not be enough, ensure that you are properly covered.

Jet Lag - is common when crossing time zones. During the flight drink water, avoid coffee, fizzy drinks and alcohol. Set your watch to the new time zone and take your medication according to the new time.

Sun - sunburn and sunstroke may cause headache, nausea, chills and vomiting. Stay in the shade, especially 11am–3pm. Guard against skin cancer by using a high strength sun block.

Medicines - take a First Aid Kit and adequate supplies of any regular medication. Carry your medication in your hand luggage. If carrying needles and syringes you will need a letter from your doctor.

Safe Sex - ALWAYS use a condom but remember that although excellent protection it is not 100% effective.

The nurses run a travel clinic, please book in to discuss your travel needs.

PLannIngIn April, the council looked at 11 planning applications:There were no objections to 10/0229—1, Bromsgrove road; 10/0176—18 Kidderminster

road; 10/0258—19, Stourbridge road; 10/0237—31, Bromsgrove road; 10/0214—25, Milestone drive; 10/0265—1, School Lane; 10/0329—46, Hall Lane and 10/0342—49, Sweetpool Lane.

On 10/0224 land at the rear of Station drive (conversion of existing redundant former workshop and storage to a two bedroom starter home) we objected on the grounds that this was not in keeping with the conservation area.

On the proposal for a new teaching block at Hagley High School, we objected on the grounds of it being a further substantial development that will put strain on the road infrastructure.

On 10/0334—7, Station road (erection of a single storey dwelling as primary residence in land to rear of 7 Station road) we objected on the grounds of being out of keeping with the conservation area and there is no precedent for such development.

Further comments will be made to Bromsgrove district council in respect of 09/1010, the proposed office development at Hagley Hall, in support of residents’ objections (see website for details).HagLey VILLage Fête

Droitwich Spa and Rural Council for Voluntary Service

New Support for Rural Voluntary Groups in HagleyWe are delighted to announce the launch of Worcestershire Rural Outreach Project,

providing a wide range of support for small rural voluntary and community groups. Support will be made available in your local area where possible, at times convenient to you, and can be tailored to your needs. Groups are already benefiting from help and advice with completing funding applications, searches for funding through Funderfinder, and the setting up of a new youth group. We offer regular newsletters, information fact sheets, tips on recruiting volunteers, help to find out about grants available and how to navigate your way through the funding application process. You may also need new fundraising and publicity ideas and perhaps would like the opportunity to meet other similar/local groups. We can visit and see how we can help your group to survive and your community to thrive.” If you are involved with, or thinking of setting up a group in Hagley, or the surrounding areas, which you think could benefit from this free support service, give us a call on 01527 837879 or email [email protected] to arrange for Jackie to visit your group and discuss your needs.

PubLIC AreAs/reCreAtION AreAWe have done a major survey this year of the various contractors employed by the council in order to save money, in particular the large amount of grass cutting around the Parish. This has now been brought under one contractor in the name of Countrywide, and has proved to be a great saving financially making the whole process much more efficient. We have also changed our electricity and stationery supplier, again saving us a considerable amount of money.

CLUB REPORTS

For June the programme features a new subject Botanical Art, a popular theme for artists. It is through Botanical Art centuries ago that we learnt about plant life from other parts of the world; many Botanists accompanied Captain Cook during his exploration and there were others from the interiors of China.

Mrs Bridget Rochford will be giving us a demonstration Friday evening 11th June at the usual venue St Saviour’s Church Hall, Hagley commencing 7:30p.m.

In July we have Lynda Kettle giving a talk on her life as a Designer, this will be 9th July.

A A Pritchard Honary President

ART CLUB

One of our members, James Isaac, gave an interesting talk on counterfeit banknotes. Apparently there are about 700,000 forgeries, out of a total of 2.5 billion notes in circulation. The most common are £20 notes and about one in 2,000 of these is forged. He indicated the many ways in which notes are designed and printed to make it very difficult for the forgers. There is a £2,000 reward for anyone who informs the police and a conviction is made.

We’ve recently made donations of £100 to the last three speakers from the following organisations; Acorns Trust, Noah’s Ark Trust and the British Heart Foundation. We spent £500 on a Rotary Shelter Box for the people in Haiti, and we’ve donated £900 to Hagley Primary School to pay for their Life Education Caravan visit. The latter project was a Rotary initiative started about 10 years ago in North Worcestershire. It provides a mobile exhibition which is parked in a school playground for a day, and warns the children of the dangers of taking drugs, smoking and drinking alcohol.

We look forward to the following future speakers on Hagley Guides, The Future at Birmingham Airport and Hagley Primary School. Look out for our BBQ at Hagley Village Fête on 3rd July, and please come and buy our burgers and hot dogs to help us to raise money for local charities.

We are seeking new members, so if you are interested in finding out more about Rotary, call me on 07966116612 then join us one Monday evening at the Stone Manor Hotel.

CLUB REPORTS

Trefoil GUildThere was some talk in this “Hundredth Year of Guilding”, of challenges

to be met. As a group, we have to admit, we didn’t all sit up and take notice, no, to be honest, none of us took a lot of notice! We remarked, rather darkly, that just getting up was quite challenging. However, we did feel a bit mean,

sending our chair person to regional and county meetings without being able to produce evidence of at least some effort, so in April Marjorie arranged a visit to Kidderminster Town Hall. What a revelation. The history of the organ alone was so interesting and the organist proved so entertaining we could have spent a great deal longer with him, but we had much more of interest in the rest of the building too. Thank you Marjorie for planning it all.

We are attempting something different in June too. We are going to play croquet. Heather is organising the evening which is taking place on her lawn. The date is Thursday 10th June at 7:00p.m. A sharp learning curve for us all but it could catch on. Do they have an Olympic team? Now that’s something like a challenge.

Elizabeth Gingell

Walton District girl guidingOn Sunday 29th March our two rainbow units, four Brownie packs

and two Guide companies, together with their leaders and members of our Trefoil Guild, performed our centenary Gang Show ‘Girls in the Lead’. We are indebted to Hagley rc High School for the venue and to their business manager Karl Wilcox for his help in setting up on the day, allowing us to celebrate our centenary in style.

We sang and danced our way through the decades from 1910 until the present day. The programme came together brilliantly (with only one full rehearsal!) opening with a whole district musical number led by Young Leader, rosie Hemmings. each Unit contributed an item and we concluded with ‘Three cheers for Guiding’, taken from the Worcester cathedral diamond Jubilee service. a rousing rendition of the gang show classic ‘riding along on the crest of a Wave’ brought the show to an end. Jane Mottershead then led the district in the Guiding farewell ‘Go Well and Safely’.

Over 300 parents and friends supported our performance and the audience included our division commissioner Mary Wenham. We had tremendous fun and the event lived up to the title and really showed why this unique “girls only” organisation continues to thrive, especially in our local community. Thanks to Gill, Jane and Sue for organising the event.

We continue to commemorate our centenary birthday until October 2010 and the girls have lots of other activities to look forward to, but our gang show was truly something special! Well done girls!

CLUB REPORTS

EVENING W.I.Everyone found our April meeting fascinating—even if the subject of our talk threatened

to be rather daunting. Our speaker was Mrs Jean Hadley, a trustee of Hamlin Fistula UK which supports Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia. This hospital was set up specifically to treat Ethiopian girls who, like many girls in poor countries, do not have the luxury of good childbirth provision and often suffer dreadful complications as a result. It was wonderful to see the faces of the patients, after the wretchedness felt by the girls and young women who are often rejected by their family and friends due to incontinence through a fistula which in itself was a direct result of a birthing complication. After treatment at the hospital nearly all are cured, and can return to their home and take their place in society again.

In April we visited a Shia Mosque in Sparkbrook and the Greek Orthodox cathedral on the edge of the Jewellery Quarter, and walked in the bluebell woods in May. At the end of May some of us visited the SSSI nature conservancy site at Porton Down. We are in the process of arranging an evening visit to World’s End Garden in Hallow, a canal trip with cream tea in the Evesham area and a day out to Trentham Gardens in Staffordshire.

Our June meeting at 7:30p.m. on Wednesday 16th, will feature what promises to be an amusing talk by Jill Fraser—More Tea, Less Vicar. We would be delighted to welcome you—we meet at Hagley Free Church Hall. For more information our contact numbers are Hagley 882875 or 720219.

Katey Fletcher

In preparation for colourful summer gardens Dave Smith gave a demonstration of Hanging Baskets - not the wire-mesh, moss-lined sort but conical cane or woven ones - better for the plants, for rooting and water retention. He suggested the best compost and gave many helpful hints ‘from the trade’. Most importantly there were no rules for Hanging Baskets - bedding plants, bulbs, strawberries or salads—they should be fun!

Members enjoyed the Group meeting where Jen Green spoke about her Auntie May - a mill girl who became a nude model for LS Lowry. She also had the distinction of leading the first - and only - strike of nude models!

Looking ahead - on Monday 14th June, Dr Sally Baggott will talk on the workings of the Assay Office and on Monday 12th July, Philippa Smith Charlesworth will tell us about Fair Trade and Kenyans through Trade.

If this sounds interesting, or you are new to the district and would like to meet people, we would be happy to welcome you - do come and join us. We meet on the 2nd Monday of the month in the Community Centre at 2p.m.

Our Youth Section’s next production is the wonderful disney’s Beauty and the Beast to be performed Wednesday 6th to Saturday 9th October 2010 at the community centre. The stage version of this fairy tale was prompted from the considerable success of

disney’s animated film. The show broke Box Office records for single-day ticket sales. Beauty and the Beast was nominated for nine 1994 Tony awards, including Best Musical. in 2005, Beauty and the Beast celebrated its 11th year on Broadway, and is currently the 6th longest running musical in Broadway history.

October and november will be a busy time for the Theatre Group with the adult section reviving its wartime revue ‘The day the War Broke Out’ to be performed on the 5th and 6th november. This show will feature many songs and sketches that kept the country going during the dark times of the Second World War which was also the source of a number of our top comedy series including dads army, and ‘allo ‘allo. Many songs, monologues and speeches are included from the period including those from Gracie Fields, George Formby, the andrews sisters, Stanley Holloway and Winston churchill. This promises to be a fun nostalgic evening’s entertainment.

For advance ticket bookings for either of these shows please contact Susan dean on 01562 884906. if you have any interest in joining the Theatre Group to help stage live theatre which includes not only acting and directing but light, sound, wardrobe, stage management and front of house then please contact Susan dean.

CLUB REPORTS

The Hagley Probus club was formed in 1981 when the members who lived in Hagley village left the Stourbridge club to form their own association.

Since that time there hadn’t been any official fraternization between the two clubs until on Monday 26th april when nigel Perry, the president of Stourbridge and his members and their wives, attended the Hagley club’s regular monthly meeting at The Granary, Shenstone.

The President of Hagley, don Manley OBe chaired the event when the guest speaker was Lt col nigel Tai, a consultant trauma and vascular surgeon who was born in Pedmore and attended Oldswinford Hospital School. He explained that he joined the regular army some 4 years ago and had done four tours of duty in war zones, three in afghanistan. His power-point presentation of 45 minutes was entitled ‘caring for casualties in afghanistan’.

Over 100 people attended the event and £550 was collected in donations for Help the Heroes.

information regarding the Hagley club can be obtained from Tom Hall on 01562 884651

Bromsgrove and District Headstart

Bromsgrove and District Headstart are a team of volunteers mainly from the Hagley area, who are affiliated to the British Heart Foundation and deliver basic emergency life support training to groups and organisations in the district. We receive no funding apart from donations, and have a wide ranging group of members who utilise the latest resuscitation techniques.

We have had another successful year during which we trained over 300 people, so if you know of any group that would benefit from a training session please contact us. We only ask for a donation towards our expenses. As many of our members are at work during the day-time we often have need for more volunteers. If you think you may be interested then please phone Geoff Gough 01562 884257 or Judy Hancox 01562 883832 for an informal chat about what is involved. No experience is necessary.

CLUB REPORTS

Stourbridge Speakers ClubStourbridge Speakers Club members Dilwyn Scot and Melvin Evans represented the Midlands

region at the Association of Speakers Clubs’ national speaking finals in York back in April. Although neither came away with a trophy, it is a reflection of the strength of the club that they were selected as the Midlands representatives for the finals.

Competitions are fun but they are not the reason most people join speakers clubs. A few come along purely from a hobby perspective but the majority are there to increase speaking confidence or to polish their performance for business reasons. Many people are now required to make presentations in some form, and often, do it spectacularly badly. At our June 7th meeting, the club’s communications officer, David Wike, will be delivering a short educational session on making a presentation. If you have to make presentations at work or for pleasure, do join us for the evening. But be prepared to have your ideas on how to make a presentation challenged, especially if you are a PowerPoint addict. Or as Yale professor Edward Tufte puts it, “Power Corrupts. PowerPoint Corrupts Absolutely.”

Good communication skills come naturally to a few people but most of us have to work hard at them, just as we would if we were learning to play golf or learning a foreign language. Stourbridge Speakers Club is an excellent place to develop your speaking and presentation skills in a friendly environment. Find out more from our website: www.stourbridgespeakers.org.uk or phone 01527 835161.

over the past few months students from Haybridge have joined up with around 700 schools across the uK making the news. The students took part in BBC News School report, a BBC project to engage 11–14 year olds in the news. The students have been working hard, training to be top journalists, carrying out interviews and producing reports. you can find more reports from School reporters on the BBC website www.bbc.co.uk/schoolreport.

This academic year our students decided to focus their fundraising activities on raising money for one charity, Schools for Africa and the current total stands as £3830 with a target of £7000. Kevin Bailey, the Head Teacher at Hagley Primary School has secured us a link with the middle School which is fed from their long standing partner school in the gambia. We look forward to developing with our new partner in the coming years.

Hagley Catholic High SchoolWe have been praised for our students’ performances in the county and

Archdiocese. Our orchestra and choir led the music in St Chad’s Cathedral, Birmingham to commemorate the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero in El Salvador 30 years ago.

A year 11 student received acclaim for a wonderful performance in Worcester Cathedral at the Young Musician of the Year event and will perform again at the counties Voices and Visions celebration later in the year. Our Irish band performed at Kidderminster Town Hall in Youth Makes Music with our local primary schools.

The year 7 boys Dance Project concluded with 21 boys performing ‘Youth Moves’ in Pershore in March, alongside three schools plus Wire Boys, Worcestershire’s boys dance company, demonstrating the talents of boys across the county and the changing preconceptions about boys and dance which is encouraged at Hagley.

In March we held our annual penny race to support a range of charities; over £3,500 was raised primarily by year 7 pupils and tutors through activities over the year including cake sales and raffles. The pupils arranged the coins in patterns on the gym floor. The winning design was in praise of God’s Creation.

In April our Bag for Life was launched. This was the end product of a year long project which enabled students to work with local businesses, a professional artist and a professional designer to produce a bag which highlights the value of shopping locally and benefitting from the quality of service available in the village of Hagley.

SCHOOL NEWS

Hagley Primary SchoolWe are pleased that the building work for the Children’s

Centre and school offices is now underway and making good progress. Children and teachers are enjoying watching various aspects of the work, and are incorporating this into their class topics. We do appreciate the patience of local residents as the work has inevitably caused a disruption on Park Road.

Thank you for your understanding while this work continues.Anne Norris

CLUB REPORTS

Artrix held a very successful Fifth Birthday Party at the Arts Centre on Saturday 24th April. All the entertainment was free and it started at lunchtime when students from the Performing Arts Department of N.E.W. College entertained shoppers in Bromsgrove High Street with a dance display.

Then, in the afternoon, local artistes such as Dan Greenaway, Nya King and Roy Carter, Glamba, Fairfield Folk, Legacy, Theatre Train, Step on Board, N.B.H.S. Jazz Band and All and Sundry played on both stages of the Venue to enthusiastic and appreciative crowds.

Later in the evening we held a reception for invited guests at which the new promotional film for Artrix was launched. This will be used to take the message of Artrix to a wide variety of Community Groups in Bromsgrove and its surrounding areas.

Our new brochure for the Summer season will become available in early June. If you would like to go on the mailing list and have one posted to you, then ring the Box Office on 01527 577330. Or you can look online at the programme and book tickets at www.artrix.co.uk.

Hagley Cricket ClubThere are only four weekends in June, so it is a relatively quiet month for Hagley Cricket

Club. However, raising 33 players every Saturday and 11 players on a Sunday is always a daunting task.

Hagley 1st XI travels to Burghill & Tillington and Coombs Wood in the month and also has home games against Feckenham and local rivals Belbroughton.

Hagley 2nd XI travels to Colwall and Belbroughton. They host Barnard’s Green and Coombs Wood in the month as well.

Hagley 3rd XI have three home games at their ground at Haybridge High School against Coombs Wood, Stourport, Alvechurch & Hopwood and travel to Coombs Wood on the final weekend of the month.

The Sunday games this month are against West Hagley, Pedmore Corinthians, Stourbridge Lions and the prestigious all day game against I Zingari, who are a team of old Etonians. All Sunday games are at home, so if you would like to see some local cricket there will always be a game every Saturday and Sunday at the ground located by Hagley Hall and St John’s Church, with the bar always available.

If any new members would like to join please contact Rus Andrews on 07811405891 or come to training on a Tuesday evening at the club. Any juniors aged between 9–16 who would like to join our youth set-up please contact Ian Watt on 07886483737, they train on Mondays or Fridays depending on age. For any further details see our website http://hagley.play-cricket.com.
