Volunteer = a person who offers their services
for others
What an important character trait to have; offer-
ing your services to others. Just think about
what is around your little bubble: the library,
cafeteria, helping new students, boy scouts, 4-H,
girl scouts, church activities, office helpers, etc.
A person with that kind of character will be the
ones that will lead our city, state, or country.
Lunchroom Volunteers
Library volunteers
Library helpers check the books in and out,
reshelf books, organize stacks of books, help
other students find books, run errands for
Mrs. Fisher and Mrs. Olson, help with the
book fairs, among other important matters.
The staff in the kitchen are so appreciative of their
student food service personnel. They help serve the
food, clean up, and learn how important cleanliness is
when making and serving food.
We appreciate your services.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone The Incredible Burt Wonderstone is a hilarious movie about the adventure of two magicians making a living through the world of magic. It’s a story of friendship that had me crying (because it was so funny)!!! If you are a fan of Steve Carell, magic, or are
looking for a laugh, I recommend this movie!! By: Macy Mack
I recently read The Fire Ascending by Chris D’Lacey. The Fire Ascending is the last book in the Dragon Chronicles series. This book was very inter-esting and exciting. With interesting turns and twists, the book is sure to keep you on your toes. If you have not read the other books in the Dragon Chronicles series, you should read them before starting The Fire Ascending. This excellent novel explains everything from previous books and answers any questions you might have about the other books. Over-all, The Fire Ascending was a great book, and I recommend it to every-one. This novel can be found in the Hagen Library. I hope you have fun reading it!
Pitch Perfect
By Presley Weiler
A lot of students have been raving over the new
movie Pitch Perfect.
Pitch Perfect was released in the year 2012 and was
written by Kay Cannon and directed by Jason Moore. The
movie is about a college a capella group consisting of all
girls who call themselves the Barden Bellas. In order to get
to Nationals, the Barden Bellas must compete against other
a capella groups, like the Treblemakers.
When released, Pitch Perfect raked in 65 million dol-
lars domestically and 40 million internationally. Pitch Per-
fect got an 81% positive rating.

Since I was little, I wanted to compete
in the Spelling Bee. Something about the Bee
fascinated me, and I knew that I wanted to try.
Finally, in seventh grade, that dream came true.
I quickly learned that practicing was
hard work. You had to
learn the spelling
guidelines of various
languages including
German, French,
Greek, and Asian. I
also discovered that if
you were willing to put
in the time and effort;
it would pay off in the
competitions.
Summer or Winter? By Presley Weiler
Would you rather have summer or winter?
Why would summer be better? Most people like summer because of the warm weather, and
a bonus, no school! You can swim outdoors at a beach or an outdoor pool. Summer has fresh air,
many colors, longer days, and the Summer Olympics this time of year. Another bonus is that peo-
ple seem happier in summer because of the natural vitamin D you get from the sun.
The downsides of summer for some people include the following comments. Heat waves
stink and cause us to sweat a lot! Thunderstorms in the summer can get dangerous, often leading
to tornadoes and lightning strikes. Putting on sun block every day is time consuming. The humid-
ity, mosquitoes, sunburns, and hot sand are all downsides to summer. Also, you will miss seeing
your friends and you lose some of the knowledge you learned the previous year.
Why would winter be better? A few people like winter because of the snow. Some people
make forts or snowmen out of snow. Many poems, short stories and even some paintings are deal-
ing with winter. Winter has cool breezes, SNOW, and the Winter Olympics. Some birds stay dur-
ing winter.
The downsides of winter: Snow storms can be dangerous and often trap some people in
their houses. During winter, you can get frostbite if you are not careful. Putting on layers of cloth-
ing can take awhile and can get on your nerves.

The Geography Bee’s school round was held earlier this
year by Mr. Obrigewitch and Miss Fields. Participants
practiced in homebase with Mr. Obrigewitch until it was
time for competition. Dawson Dutchak took 1st place
and qualified for the state competition, later placing 7th
in Bismarck. The Geography Bee proved to be a fun
experience for all those who participated this year.

8th Kace Crain (8th)
9th Cole Steffan (8th)
10th Hunter Schatz (8th)
These students then proceeded to the regional
competition which was held at the college. Hagen‘s team
was represented very well this year, and we are proud of
their hard work and success! By Christopher Dean
In 2012, I placed second in the Stark County Spell-
ing Bee, qualifying me for State, where I took tenth.
In 2013, I again placed second at County, this time
taking twelfth place out of over 100 competitors.
Throughout the competitions, I’ve met nu-
merous friends, made amazing memories, and
learned that there is always a reward for hard work.
I recommend trying for anyone who wants to par-
ticipate. I can guarantee that the Bee will give you
an experience of a lifetime. Skylar Dockter
Spelling Bee continued... 11 students participated in the Science Olympiad
competition this year, organized by Ms. Dennis.
Science Olympiad proved to be a great opportu-
nity for these students to compete in many science
related topics. Many events were offered, such as
Shock Value, Rocks and Minerals, Disease Detec-
tives, Reach for the Stars, Meteorology, and Food
Science. The 7th and 8th grade teams competed
very well in the regional competition on March 5th
earlier this year. The 8th grade team even qualified
for the state competition on April 20th in Fargo!
We are proud of these students’ hard work in this
year’s Science Olympiad competition.

All-state band and all-state choir are both privileges to participate in. To be in both choir and band, first you must
send in an audition tape. For choir, there is a list of songs you can choose from, depending on what your vocal
range is. These songs are not pop songs you hear on the radio, but songs to showcase your full vocal range. For
band, they create the music for your section which you must play. There are four basic scales, then a full two-octave
E-flat major chromatic scale, and then the song. The judges have to listen to hundreds of 7th, 8th, and 9th grade
band and choir students. Can you imagine? For choir, there are two choirs in which you might be placed. One is an
all girl choir, the Treble Choir, and the other has both male and female voices, the Mixed Choir. For band, there is
one band to be placed in. Band has about 100 students admitted, while for choir they can accept as many as they
want. So if you love to sing, audition for all-state choir! If you are in band and you love to play, audition! I can tell
you from personal experience, there is nothing as exiting as being surrounded by people your age who love music as
much as you do! Don’t be afraid, and next year audition! You wont regret it.

Codie Myers What are some qualities you look for when making a
friend?
They have to be funny and chatty, not quiet.
If you became President, how would you make the
US better?
I would listen to the people and take their requests to
make the US better.
If you could invent a tool that would help the world,
what would you call it, how would it work, and what
would it look like?
I would make a teleportation device. It would transport
you to different places, and it would come in two versions:
a handheld one that fits in your pocket and the other one
would be the size of a standing up shower.
If you could do anything in the world, what would
you do?
I’d want to be the first person to go to Pluto, and I would
get there by using my teleportation device.
What superpowers would you want to have?
I would want teleportation; it’s my #1 because if you are
in trouble or having a bad day you can teleport somewhere
nice like the Caribbean.
Interviewed by Presley Weiler
The Daughters Ever wonder what it’s like to have a famous mom or dad? Well, Carina, Hudson and Lizzie know better than anybody.
These girls aren’t ones to let their parent’s popularity run their lives and create their future.
In this story Lizzie Summers, only daughter of supermodel Katia Summers, likes to stick to the sidelines. When she slips
up and admits on camera that being a famous supermodel’s daughter isn’t exactly glamorous and wonderful, and it goes viral on
YouTube, Lizzie is noticed by a photographer for “unique” modeling.
All of Lizzie’s life with her crooked nose, red frizzy hair, and bushy eyebrows had always felt like the beast compared to
her mother. By taking this modeling job, Lizzie would finally feel like she amounts to something.
Making matters more complicated, Todd Piedmont, Lizzie’s childhood best friend and crush, has recently moved back
from London. When Ava, the most popular girl, decided to claim him for her own, what will Lizzie do?
Through it all, Lizzie is able to lean on her friends’ shoulders. After all, they know what she’s going through by personal
experience.
The Daughters is a light-hearted, cheery book about finding out what it’s like being a famous child. I definitely recom-
mend this book for anyone who dreams of being famous. Also check out the other books of the series: The Daughters Break the
Rules, The Daughters Take the Stage, and The Daughters Join the Party.
A book review by Skylar Dockter.
My interview was with Cora Knipp from
the seventh grade.
Her goals for the JH years are to improve
academic scores to all A’s and to improve
the sports she is in. She will obtain these
goals by studying hard and practice when
she gets the chance. Cora’s wish for the
USA is to no longer have the homeless
problem. She believes that the world
needs to change. If Cora could change
one thing at Hagen it would be the build-
ing. Thank you, Cora.

Word Puzzles 1. These words can all have a letter added and then be rearranged to make a new
5-letter word. The letters added spell a 9-letter word. What are the new words? HERB BANG KEEN SUIT QUAD WHEY CELL TOIL WILD
2. Each of the following sets of letters can be made into a real word by adding three
letters to the beginning, and the same three letters in the same order to the end. For example, ANGLEM can have ENT added at the start and the end to become ENT
3. Using the letters AAEEIIMMPPTT complete this grid with valid words. The grid
reads the same across as down.

Social Medias Facebook. Twitter. MSN. Do these names sound familiar? As of 2012,
it was reported that 68% of all teenagers used social medias such as these.
Between the ages of 13-17, 90% of teens were reported to use social media
and 75% were reported to have a profile on a popular social media network.
Although these medias can be helpful, students are getting in trouble for us-
ing them in the wrong manner. Many students are posting inappropriate pic-
tures and messages, resulting in serious consequences. Students are even be-
ing turned down jobs because of social media networking. Many employers
are finding out about the students’ accounts.
Next time you’re going to post something on Facebook or Twitter, remem-
ber:
Always post appropriate material that your parents would be ok with see-
ing.
Don’t post any personal information that you wouldn’t want others seeing
Don’t use these medias for embarrassing others.
Don’t post inappropriate pictures that anyone can see.

What is on the Hagen wish list?
One of the things that is on the Hagen’s wish list
would be to have a better weight room.
It would be nice to have a bigger gym so all the stu-
dents would have a place to sit in the bleachers and
not on the floor during assemblies.
Another wish is to have more electives.
More bathrooms with hot running water would be a
benefit.
Wouldn’t it be nice if every classroom had computers
for their whole class? Just think of the educational
opportunities we could envision!
What is on your wish list?

Our assemblies
have been very
memorable, from
dance mobs to the
principle being
pied!! We would
like to thank every-
one who took the
time and effort to
make them great.
We appreciate it!
Sincerely,
Hagen Students
Remember the time when we sat
through our first assembly? It was a
bit intimidating, but we got used to
the closeness of it all. Do you re-
member the messages the speakers
wanted us to walk away with: know
who you are, empathy, encourage-
ment? Our skits, parades, ceremo-
nies, concerts, messages, & games
were all apart of becoming one.

The staff of the Hagen Hi-Lites would like to thank all those who contributed
to the making of the student newspaper, especially Miss Fields and her photography
club for the many pictures we used. We would like to thank Dr. Lewton for allow-
ing us to publish our paper. We hoped you liked this year’s publications.
