Letter from the President, Stephanie D. Moore Can you believe that it is April 2015 already? What a great year (the new Petroleum Club is fabulous) this is turning out to be even with the downturn in oil prices. I am so pleased that our members have chosen to stick with HADOA, and we still have many great things planned for you for the rest of 2015. Many of you are discovering new ways to save your company money which has also been one of the primary goals for the HADOA Board of Directors. Keep doing this, it is important for all of our jobs! As President of HADOA this year, I have thought long and hard about what I wanted 2015 to be about and have focused on several goals for us to achieve together. In addi- tion to the great speakers that have already attended our luncheons, we have a fantas- tic line-up for the April seminar as well as the rest of the year! Finding charismatic speakers with critical topics for you is one of the most important functions the HADOA board will do. With this in mind, if there are topics you would like to further your knowledge about or speakers that you have seen that stand out in your memory, please contact any of our board members and let us know! This is your organization and edu- cation is what your membership fees pay for. Additional goals for 2015 include a focus on increasing our membership and attendance at HADOA events, continued improvements on the new HADOA website (please pardon our construction as our webmaster continues to hammer out those imperfections) and compiling information to add to the website on the history of HADOA. Looking at each of these items, if you have not renewed your membership for 2015 or continue to attend our events as a non-member, please consider joining. On the historical goal, late last year, long time member, friend and mentor Sarah Broyles gave me a stack of newslet- ters and correspondence from the late 1980’s and it was really neat to read through. If you have been a member of HADOA for more than 10 years, first, thank you so much for supporting such a great organization, second, if you have any pictures, articles and/ or memories you would like to share, please contact Sara Galloway as we would love to share it with all of the new members in the industry! In support of the annual NADOA Institute, this year we will be giving away two full schol- arships at our May luncheon. These scholarships will help with travel and lodging expenses as well as paying for registration. Stay tuned for additional details, coming soon. Again, I would like to thank all of you for your continued support of HADOA. I am looking forward to an even better rest of the year. Best Regards, Stephanie D. On Wednesday, February 18th, Austin Brister, Associate Attorney with
McGinnis Lochridge, spoke to HADOA membership. The title of his speech was
“Restrictions on Assignability: an Overview of the Ties that Commonly Bind
Oil and Gas Properties”. Austin spoke of the four provisions that often come into
play, and sometimes define, the acquisition and divestiture of oil and gas assets, in-
cluding preferential rights to purchase, consents to assign, area of mutual interest,
and maintenance of uniform interests. Austin covered that the central aspect of each
to consider were the contractual provisions when selling to a third party. For exam-
ple, with preferential rights to purchase, must first be offered to the preferential right
holder; the consent to assign must first get the holder’s approval, the Maintenance of
Uniform Interest is the interest is sold uniformly
across the entire defined area. Austin provided
how to deal with these different provisions from
the perspective of the Buyer, Seller, & right hold-
er. This was a very informative presentation that
was well received by HADOA’s membership. We
would like to say THANKS again to Austin for
joining us at our February luncheon!

March Luncheon - 116 Attended
On Wednesday, March 18th, Stephen Riner, Owner/Attorney with
the Law Office of Stephen N. Riner spoke to the HADOA membership.,
with the topic “Title Opinions: the Good, The Bad, & The Ugly”. Ste-
ve explained his process for preparing a title opinion and the importance
that should be placed on the value of the abstract. Steve further went into
detail on the hardships that field landman deal with when working with
various Texas county clerks’ records and the importance of direct/
indirect indices when building abstracts. Steve also reviewed those title
requirements that a division order analyst should note and the documen-
tation that would be needed to cure certain title defects. Steve was very
well received by the audience and gave out two $50 bills at the event as
prizes for those who could answer two Texas history questions. Mark
Gresham was the winner of both cash prizes! We would like to say
THANKS again to Steve for joining us at our March luncheon!
