ENGLISH TRANSLATION

The messenger of Allah, and he is the truthful, the believed, narrated to us : "Verily the creation of each one of you is brought together in his mother's belly for forty days in the form of seed, then he is a clot of blood for a like period, then a morsel of flesh for a like period, then there is sent to him the angel who blows the breath of life into him and who is commanded about four matters: to write down his means of livelihood, his life span, his actions, and whether happy or unhappy.

Page 4: hadith01-lesson04

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

By Allah, other than Whom there is no god, verily one of you behaves like the people of Paradise until there is but an arm's length between him and it, and that which has been written over takes him and so he behaves like the people of Hell-fire and thus he enters it; and one of you behaves like the people of Hell-fire until there is but an arm's length between him and it, and that which has been written over takes him and so he behaves like the people of Paradise and thus he enters it."

NARRATOR

Abu Abdul Rahman Abdullah ibn Mas`ood (D. 32 A.H.\652 C.E.)

He was the sixth person to embrace Islam. His mother was also a very early convert. He related 848 hadith He was best known for his knowledge of the Qur’an.

“Whoever loves to recite the Qur’an as fresh as it was revealed, let him copy the recitation of Ibn Umm ‘Abd. (Abdullah Ibn Mas`ood)”

THE CORRECT TEXT OF THIS HADITH

On the authority of Abdullah b. Mas’ud who said, “Verirlyeachone of you is brought together in his mother’s abdomen for forty days. Thereafter it is therein a clinging object during this period. Thereafter, it is therein a lump looking like it has been chewed in this period. The angel is then sent to him…”

Page 11: hadith01-lesson04

WHY IS THERE A CHANGE IN THIS VERSION?

The version related by al-Nawawi has idraj.

Idraj means insertion of a word or a phrase at the body of the text. The word inserted is nutfah.

According to the text after adding the word, each stage of the development of fetus takes forty days.

If we restore the text it should reads that all stages take place in the first four months.

Page 12: hadith01-lesson04

CORRECT READING OF THE TEXT

Surely, each one of you is brought toegher in his mother’s abdomen for forty days. It is then a clinging object during that same period. Then it is a lump looking like it has been chewed

during that same period.”

All those stages occur at the same name period.

Page 13: hadith01-lesson04

THE MESSENGER OF ALLAH, AND HE IS AS-SAADIQ (THE TRUTHFUL), AL-MASDOOQ (THE BELIEVED), NARRATED TO

US

As-Saadiq: The one who is truthful for everything. This was a known feature of the prophet (p.b.u.h) before receiving the revelation.

Al-Masdooq: the person to be believed in.

Those two characteristics were mentioned as an emphasis to the scientific fact mentioned in the haidith.

Page 14: hadith01-lesson04

SURELY, EACH OF YOU IS BROUGHT TOGETHER IN HIS MOTHER’S ABDOMEN FOR

FORTY DAYS. IT IS THEN THEREIN A CLINGING OBJECT DURING THIS PERIOD.

THEREAFTER IT IS THEREIN A LUMP LOOKING IT HAS BEEN CHEWED DURING

THIS PERIOD.

Page 15: hadith01-lesson04

STAGES OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

Allah mentioned the first three stages of the development of the fetus stated in the Hadith

ا أهي طفة مث من لقة ي ن راب مث من ن مك م لقنن ٱٱلبعث فا ن كنمت ىف ريب م

لناس ا

ٱٱ لمك نبني قة ل قة وري مل ل ضغة م مث من م

“O People, if you should be in doubt about the Resurrection, then [consider that] indeed, We created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging clot, and then from a lump of flesh, formed and unformed - that We may show you”

Page 16: hadith01-lesson04

BROUGHT TOGETHER

The Arabic expression implies being brought together and preserved

It describes the process when a male sperm and ovum are both capacitated in the fallopian tube.

Page 17: hadith01-lesson04

IN HIS MOTHER’S ABDOMEN (BATN)

The Arabic word batn refers to stomach or abdominal. In other narrations the word whom is used. Whom refers to the Arabic word rahim, which is derived from

the root rahima ‘had mercy’. Ar-Rahmaan ‘the All-Merciful’ is derived from the same root.

الرحم شجنة من الله من وصلها وصله الله ومن قطعها قطعه الله The womb (al-rahim) has taken its name from al-Rahm an (the All-Merciful). Allah has said, “Whoever keeps your ties I shall

keep his ties. Whoever cuts you off, I shall cut him off.” Recorded by Bukhari.

Does man think that he will be left neglected? Had he not been a sperm from semen emitted (nutfah)? Then he was a clinging clot, and [ Allah ] created [his form] and proportioned [him] And made of him two mates, the male and the female

Page 20: hadith01-lesson04

1. DROP OF FLUID (NUTFAH)

It is the male sperm.

•Sex is determined through the male sperm.

Not from the whole fluid (ejaculated) man is created.•Sperms constitute 0.5%

of the fluid

Page 21: hadith01-lesson04

2. MIXED SEXUAL FLUID (NUTFAH AMSHAJ)

Hadith: man is created from the both male and female nutfah.

• This is the medical explanation of zygote and performational stage.

Ibn al-Ahteer: the nutfah is growing and developing during that period unitl it becomes ready for the next period.

Page 22: hadith01-lesson04

3. CLINGING OBJECT (ALAQAH)

Clinging object

leech

• Implantation of the blastocyst

•Embedded by the 10 day.

From day 7

•The chronic villiappears

•Covers the whole blastocyst

Day 13 and 14

•The amniotic sac and yolk sac to the outer ball, the choriion.

Connecting stalk connects the embryo proerwith its true coverings

Page 23: hadith01-lesson04

4. LUMP LOOKING LIKE IT HAS BEEN CHEWED DURING THAT SIMILAR

PERIOD.

Much of the axial skeleton and musculature will develop. •Fairly equally distributed

indentations or bumps.

It is finished by the sixth week (42 days after conception).

•This is confirmed in many prophetic traditions.

AND HE BREATHES INTO HIM THE SPIRIT

The meaning of spirit, soul or (rooh)

The rooh is the “life” of the individual Allah says about the rooh,

ال قليال ن ٱٱلعمل ا وح من ٱمر رىب وما ٱوتيمت م وح قل ٱٱلر ﴾٥٨﴿ وسلونك عن ٱٱلر

“And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about the soul. Say, "The soul is of the affair of my Lord.

And mankind have not been given of knowledge except a little.”

Page 25: hadith01-lesson04

AR-ROOH ..?

It is a contingent, created, fashioned and controlled.

There is a difference of opinions about the essential nature of the spirit whether it is a physical entity or an accident.

What is proved by the Qur’an, Sunnah, and consensus is that ‘it is a body of a different essence than the physical body that we see.’

There is nothing specific that the breathing in the of the rooh constitutes the b i i f h lif H i h

Page 26: hadith01-lesson04

THIS HADITH STATES THAT THE FOLLOWING ARE RECORDED

Page 28: hadith01-lesson04

THE FORTUNATE OR THE MISERABLE.2

As for those who were [destined to be] wretched, they will be in the Fire. For them therein is [violent] exhaling and inhaling. [They will be] abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Lord should will. Indeed, your Lord is an effecter of what He intends. And as for those who were [destined to be] prosperous, they will be in Paradise, abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Lord should will - a bestowal uninterrupted.

Page 29: hadith01-lesson04

ENDS ARE BASED ON THEIR FINAL DEED

The prophet states that the most important deed is the final deed,

“A person does the deeds of the people of Hell, while he is from the people of paradise. And a person does the deeds of the people of paradise and he is from the people of hell. Verily the deeds are based on their final deed”
