Are Memes What They Seem?

Page 2: HACC meme

I feel that memes are an important part of our generation and culture. I feel like I’ve grown up with them, especially throughout my later high school years (My teacher had a love affair of LOL cats). I can remember everything from people quoting them to backpacks, shirts, stickers, notebooks and other items being plastered with them. In our generation I think it’s just another way we can relate to one another. We can use memes to express ourself in original and funny ways that other people can relate to.

“Internet memes refer to these cultural units (catch phrases, images, fashions, expressions etc.) that spread rapidly via internet technologies, constructing, framing, and revealing cultural realities.” -Jenny Davis (http://thesocietypages.org/cyborgology/2011/12/06/internet-memes-the-mythology-of-augmented-society/)

I picked one of my favorite memes of all time. This meme even though this was not the first caption it had, has to be one of the funniest in my opinion. It was the first one I can remember really seeing. I’ve got a tattoo and the caption of the meme had said “Oh you hate tattoos? Tell me how this makes me a bad person.” I personally really enjoyed the subtle message that it was trying to get across. I felt it was powerful, but wasn’t harsh.

I love the sarcastic nature of this meme as I do have a sarcastic sense of humor. I think it’s a funny way to express your view on something without having to come across as foul.

What does it mean?

My meme I thought was pretty self explanatory. It was the victory baby proclaiming how cheap HACC is. I know for me the most exciting thing about HACC was how cheap the tuition was, but how good the programs actually were. This meme just helps to prove how exciting that fact actually is! Go HACC!
