A HABITAT A habitat is a place where living things live: animals, plants, fungi, humans, microorganisms…
LIVING THINGS LIVE
27/01/15
A habitat provides
FOOD, WATER,
SPACE
and SHELTER
to all the living things.
DESERT
CLIMATE
In the desert it is very HOT during the day. (40°-50°)
And really COLD at night. (-5°)
The soil is very SANDY and sometimes there are sandstorms.
Deserts are very DRY because it rains very little.
Not many plants or animals live here.
Plants and animals have adapted to survive with little water.
Most of desert animals get their water from the food they eat.
WHAT ANIMALS LIVE IN THE DESERT?
Scorpions, spiders, camels, dromedaries, lizards, snakes...
Many animals sleep during the day, because it is too hot, and are active at night.
They come out at night to eat
Many plants have thick leaves in the desert to retain water.
There are a lot of kind of cacti.
THE TUNDRA
CLIMATE
It is very cold and windy. It is freezing. (-30°C in winter 5°C in summer)
It rains very little.
There is snow and iceon the ground most of the year.
It is hard for plants to grow in the tundra.
There are no trees. Only a few plants grow in the summer.
There are six months of daylight
and six months of darkness
Animals have thick white fur to protect them from the cold and to camouflage.
The Arctic Tundra
The Antarctic Tundra
Animals in the Arctic

Polar bear
Snowy owl

Animals in the Antarctic
The Blue whale (length up to 30 m)
Orca (or killer whale) (length up to 8 m)
Humpback whale (length up to 15 m)
The grassland
Glasslands are areas where the vegetation is
dominated by grasses and
some flowers that grow
among the
grasses.
Climate
Temperate grasslands have warm and humid summers (±15°C) and cool and dry winters (±5°C).
Grasslands animals

Rabbit
Mouse

THE SAVANNAH
CLIMATE
It is quite hot during the day
and warm at night.
It rains very little
and it only rains in the summer.
SUMMER
There are only two seasons in the savannah:
there is a wet summer and a dry winter.
It is difficult for animals
to find water in winter.
There are few trees and the plants are mainly grasses.

The Forest
CLIMATE
In a forest it is warm and cool in summer (±15°C)
And cold in winter (±5°C)
Forests are large areas rich in vegetation, especially tall trees and grass.
There are different types of evergreen and deciduous trees, bushes and grasses.
Forest Plants
Fir tree
Pine tree
Maple tree
Maple tree leaves on the ground
Bush and grasses
When autumn arrives the leaves turn redred, orangeorange and yellowyellow.
Once winter comes the trees lose their leaves.
In the forest there are different ANIMALS:Foxes, mice, owls, birds, rabbits, snails, bears…
Forest animals
There are a lot of mushrooms in the forest.
Mushrooms absorb nutrients from dead matter.
Fungi
RAINFORESTS or JUNGLES
CLIMATE They are very wet because it rains almost every day.
They are very warm (about 20-30°C)
They have very dense vegetation : very tall trees and many plants on the ground.
Many types of trees, flowers, vines, carnivorous plants, lianas, and very tall trees live here.

OCEANS AND SEAS
Oceans and seas are saltwater habitats.
They cover about 70% of the Earth´s surface.
Dolphin, whales, seals…
Many fish and some mammals live here.
There are invertebrate animals too
Jellyfish
Starfish
Anemones
Zooplankton
Many plants live in the ocean
Seagrasses
Seaweds
Phytoplankton
RIVERS
Rivers are streams of running water flowing towards an ocean, a lake or another river.
A lake is a body of water that is surrounded by land. There are millions of lakes in the word.
The most important rivers in Spain
There are thousands of rivers throughout the world.
The most important rivers are:Amazon River (The largest)
Nile River (The longest: 6,516 kilometers long)
Mississippi River (The largest in North America)
Many animals live in and around the rivers and lakes.
The river banks are habitats for mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects.
PONDS
A pond is a small area of fresh water.
It doesn’t have moving water.
In a pond some animals live in the water (fish, crayfish, tadpoles, etc.), some live above the water (ducks, insects, etc.), and others live in the area surrounding the pond (raccoons, earthworms, etc.).
Fish, frogs , turtles , birds , dragonflies and mosquitoes.
The most common animals in and near the pond are:
Many plants grow in and around a pond.
